Mark 15:40 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Very early in the morning, the leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, the teachers of the law, and the whole high council decided what to do with Jesus. They tied him, led him away, and handed him over to governor Pilate.
2 Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Yes, that is right."
3 The leading priests accused Jesus of many things.
4 So Pilate asked Jesus another question. He said, "You can see that these people are accusing you of many things. Why don't you answer?"
5 But Jesus still did not answer, and this really surprised Pilate.
6 Every year at the Passover time the governor would free one prisoner— whichever one the people wanted.
7 There was a man in prison at that time named Barabbas. He and the rebels with him had been put in prison for committing murder during a riot.
8 The people came to Pilate and asked him to free a prisoner as he always did.
9 Pilate asked them, "Do you want me to free the king of the Jews?"
10 Pilate knew that the leading priests had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous of him.
11 But the leading priests persuaded the people to ask Pilate to free Barabbas, not Jesus.
12 Pilate asked the people again, "So what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?"
13 The people shouted, "Kill him on a cross!"
14 Pilate asked, "Why? What wrong has he done?" But the people shouted louder and louder, "Kill him on a cross!"
15 Pilate wanted to please the people, so he set Barabbas free for them. And he told the soldiers to beat Jesus with whips. Then he handed him over to the soldiers to be killed on a cross.
16 Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's palace (called the Praetorium). They called all the other soldiers together.
17 They put a purple robe on Jesus, made a crown from thorny branches, and put it on his head.
18 Then they began shouting, "Welcome, king of the Jews!"
19 They kept on beating his head with a stick and spitting on him. Then they bowed down on their knees and pretended to honor him as a king.
20 After they finished making fun of him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him out of the palace to be killed on a cross.
21 There was a man from Cyrene named Simon walking into the city from the fields. He was the father of Alexander and Rufus. The soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
22 They led Jesus to the place called Golgotha. (Golgotha means "The Place of the Skull.")
23 There they gave him some wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused to drink it.
24 The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross. Then they divided his clothes among themselves, throwing dice to see who would get what.
25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they nailed Jesus to the cross.
26 There was a sign with the charge against him written on it. It said, "the king of the jews."
27 They also nailed two criminals to crosses beside Jesus—one on the right and the other on the left.

29 People walked by and said bad things to Jesus. They shook their heads and said, "You said you could destroy the Temple and build it again in three days.
30 So save yourself! Come down from that cross!"
31 The leading priests and the teachers of the law were also there. They made fun of Jesus the same as the other people did. They said to each other, "He saved others, but he can't save himself!
32 If he is really the Christ, the king of Israel, he should come down from the cross now. When we see this, then we will believe in him." The criminals on the crosses beside Jesus also said bad things to him.
33 At noon the whole country became dark. This darkness continued until three o'clock.
34 At three o'clock Jesus cried out loudly, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani." This means "My God, my God, why have you left me alone?"
35 Some of the people standing there heard this. They said, "Listen! He is calling Elijah."
36 One man there ran and got a sponge. He filled the sponge with sour wine and tied it to a stick. Then he used the stick to give the sponge to Jesus to get a drink from it. The man said, "We should wait now and see if Elijah will come to take him down from the cross."
37 Then Jesus cried out loudly and died.
38 When Jesus died, the curtain in the Temple was torn into two pieces. The tear started at the top and tore all the way to the bottom.
39 The army officer who was standing there in front of the cross saw what happened when Jesus died. The officer said, "This man really was the Son of God!"
40 Some women were standing away from the cross, watching. Among these women were Mary Magdalene, Salome, and Mary the mother of James and Joses. (James was her youngest son.)
41 These were the women who had followed Jesus in Galilee and cared for him. Many other women who had come with Jesus to Jerusalem were also there.
42 This day was called Preparation day. (That means the day before the Sabbath day.) It was becoming dark.
43 A man named Joseph from Arimathea was brave enough to go to Pilate and ask for Jesus' body. Joseph was an important member of the high council. He was one of the people who wanted God's kingdom to come.
44 Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead. So he called for the army officer in charge and asked him if Jesus was already dead.
45 When Pilate heard it from the officer, he told Joseph he could have the body.
46 Joseph bought some linen cloth. He took the body from the cross, wrapped it in the linen, and put the body in a tomb that was dug in a wall of rock. Then he closed the tomb by rolling a large stone to cover the entrance.
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw the place where Jesus was put.

3 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM accused G2723 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-GSM of many things G4183 A-APN : but G1161 he G3588 T-NPM answered G611 nothing G3762 .
4 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM asked G1905 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM again G3825 ADV , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Answerest G611 V-PNI-2S thou G3756 PRT-N nothing G3762 A-ASN ? behold G2396 how many things G4214 Q-APN they witness against G2649 V-PAI-3P thee G4675 P-2GS .
5 But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM yet G3765 ADV answered G611 V-ADI-3S nothing G3762 A-ASN ; so that G3588 T-ASM Pilate G4091 N-ASM marveled G2296 V-PAN .
6 Now G1161 CONJ at G2596 PREP that feast G1859 N-ASF he released G630 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM one G1520 A-ASM prisoner G1198 N-ASM , whomsoever G3746 R-ASM-P they desired G154 V-IMI-3P .
7 And G1161 CONJ there was G2258 V-IXI-3S one named G3004 V-PPP-NSM Barabbas G912 N-NSM , which lay bound G1210 V-RPP-NSM with G3326 PREP them that had made insurrection with him G4955 N-GPM , who G3748 R-NPM had committed G4160 V-LAI-3P murder G5408 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF insurrection G4714 N-DSF .
8 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM multitude G3793 N-NSM crying aloud G310 V-AAP-NSM began G756 V-ADI-3S to desire G154 V-PMN him to do as G2531 ADV he had ever G104 ADV done G4160 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM .
9 But G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S them G846 P-DPM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Will G2309 V-PAI-2P ye that I release G630 V-AAS-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP the G3588 T-ASM King G935 N-ASM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM ?
10 For G1063 CONJ he knew G1097 V-IAI-3S that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM had delivered G3860 V-LAI-3P him G846 P-ASM for G1223 PREP envy G5355 N-ASM .
11 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM moved G383 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM people G3793 N-ASM , that G2443 CONJ he should rather G3123 ADV release G630 V-AAS-3S Barabbas G912 N-ASM unto them G846 P-DPM .
12 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S again G3825 ADV unto them G846 P-DPM , What G5101 I-ASN will G2309 V-PAI-2P ye then G3767 CONJ that I shall do G4160 V-AAS-1S unto him whom G3739 R-ASM ye call G3004 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-NSM King G935 N-ASM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM ?
13 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM cried out G2896 V-AAI-3P again G3825 ADV , Crucify G4717 V-AAM-2S him G846 P-ASM .
14 Then G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Why G1063 CONJ , what G5101 I-ASN evil G2556 A-ASN hath he G3588 T-NPM done G4160 V-AAI-3S ? And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NSM cried out G2896 V-AAI-3P the more exceedingly G4056 ADV , Crucify G4717 V-AAM-2S him G846 P-ASM .
15 And G1161 CONJ so Pilate G4091 N-NSM , willing G1014 V-PNP-NSM to content G4160 V-AAN the G3588 T-DSM people G3793 N-DSM , released G630 V-AAI-3S Barabbas G912 N-ASM unto them G846 P-DPM , and G2532 CONJ delivered G3860 V-AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-ASM , when he had scourged G5417 V-AAP-NSM him , to G2443 CONJ be crucified G4717 V-APS-3S .
16 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM soldiers G4757 N-NPM led him away G520 V-2AAI-3P into G2080 ADV the G3588 T-GSF hall G833 N-GSF , called G3603 Praetorium G4232 N-NSN ; and G2532 CONJ they call together G4779 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF whole G3650 A-ASF band G4686 N-ASF .
17 And G2532 CONJ they clothed him with V-PAI-3P purple G4209 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ plaited G4120 V-AAP-NPM a crown G4735 N-ASM of thorns G174 A-ASM , and put it about G4060 V-PAI-3S his G846 P-ASM head ,
18 And G2532 CONJ began G756 V-ADI-3P to salute G782 V-PNN him G846 P-ASM , Hail G5463 V-PAM-2S , King G935 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM !
19 And G2532 CONJ they smote G5180 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-GSM on the G3588 T-ASF head G2776 N-ASF with a reed G2563 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ did spit upon G1716 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ bowing G5087 V-PAP-NPM their knees G1119 N-APN worshiped G4352 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-DSM .
20 And G2532 CONJ when G3753 ADV they had mocked G1702 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM , they took off G1562 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF purple G4209 N-ASF from him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ put his own clothes on V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ led him out G1806 V-PAI-3P to G2443 CONJ crucify G4717 V-AAS-3P him G846 P-ASM .
21 And G2532 CONJ they compel G29 V-PAI-3P one G5100 X-ASM Simon G4613 N-ASM a Cyrenian G2956 N-ASM , who passed by G3855 V-PAP-ASM , coming G2064 V-PNP-ASM out of G575 PREP the country G68 N-GSM , the G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM of Alexander G223 N-GSM and G2532 CONJ Rufus G4504 N-GSM , to G2443 CONJ bear G142 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASM cross G4716 N-ASM .
22 And G2532 CONJ they bring G5342 V-PAI-3P him G846 P-ASM unto G1909 PREP the place G5117 N-ASM Golgotha G1115 N-ASF , which is G3603 , being interpreted G3177 V-PPP-NSN , The place G5117 N-NSM of a skull G2898 N-GSN .
23 And G2532 CONJ they gave G1325 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-DSM to drink G4095 V-2AAN wine G3631 N-ASM mingled with myrrh G4669 V-RPP-ASM : but G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM received G2983 V-2AAI-3S it not G3756 PRT-N .
24 And G2532 CONJ when they had crucified G4717 V-AAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM , they parted G1266 V-PMI-3P his G3588 T-APN garments G2440 N-APN , casting G906 V-PAP-NPM lots G2819 N-ASM upon G1909 PREP them G846 P-APN , what every man G5101 I-NSM should take G142 V-AAS-3S .
25 And G1161 CONJ it was G2258 V-IXI-3S the third G5154 A-NSF hour G5610 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ they crucified G4717 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM .
26 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF superscription G1923 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSF his G3588 T-GSF accusation G156 N-GSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S written over G1924 V-RPP-NSF , THE G3588 T-NSM KING G935 N-NSM OF G3588 T-GPM THE G3588 T-GPM JEWS G2453 A-GPM .
27 And G2532 CONJ with G4862 PREP him G846 P-DSM they crucify G4717 V-PAI-3P two G1417 A-NUI thieves G3027 N-APM ; the one G1520 A-ASM on G1537 PREP his right hand G1188 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ the other G1520 A-ASM on G1537 PREP his G846 P-GSM left G2176 A-GPM .
28 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF was fulfilled G4137 V-API-3S , which saith G3004 V-PAP-NSF , And G2532 CONJ he was numbered G3049 V-API-3S with G3326 PREP the transgressors G459 A-GPM .

32 Let Christ G5547 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM King G935 N-NSM of Israel G2474 N-PRI descend G2597 V-2AAM-3S now G3568 ADV from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSM cross G4716 N-GSM , that G2443 CONJ we may see G1492 V-2AAS-1P and G2532 CONJ believe G4100 V-AAS-1P . 34 And G2532 CONJ at the G3588 T-DSF ninth G1766 A-DSF hour G5610 N-DSF Jesus G2424 N-NSM cried G994 V-AAI-3S with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Eloi G1682 ARAM , Eloi G1682 ARAM , lama G2982 ARAM sabachthani G4518 ARAM ? which is G3603 , being interpreted G3177 V-PPP-NSN , My G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM , my G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM , why G5101 I-ASN hast thou forsaken G1459 V-2AAI-2S me G3165 P-1AS ?
35 And G2532 CONJ some G3588 T-GPM of them that stood by G3936 V-RAP-GPM , when they heard G191 V-AAP-NPM it , said G3004 V-IAI-3P , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , he calleth G5455 V-PAI-3S Elijah G2243 N-ASM .
36 And G1161 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM ran G5143 V-2AAP-NSM and G2532 CONJ filled a sponge full G1072 V-AAP-NSM of vinegar G3690 N-GSN , and G5037 PRT put it on G4060 V-2AAP-NSM a reed G2563 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ gave him to drink G4222 V-IAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Let alone G863 V-2AAM-2P ; let us see G1492 V-2AAS-1P whether G1487 COND Elijah G2243 N-NSM will come G2064 V-PNI-3S to take him down G2507 V-2AAN .
37 And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM cried G863 V-2AAP-NSM with a loud G3173 A-ASF voice G5456 N-ASF , and gave up the ghost G1606 V-AAI-3S .
38 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN veil G2665 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM temple G3485 N-GSM was rent G4977 V-API-3S in G1519 PREP twain G1417 A-NUI from G575 PREP the top G509 ADV to G2193 CONJ the bottom G2736 ADV .
39 And G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-NSM centurion G2760 N-NSM , which stood G3936 V-RAP-NSM over against G1727 A-GSF him G846 P-GSM , saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ he so G3779 ADV cried out G2896 V-AAP-NSM , and gave up the ghost G1606 V-AAI-3S , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Truly G230 ADV this G3588 T-NSM man G444 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S the Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
40 There G1161 CONJ were G2258 V-IXI-3P also G2532 CONJ women G1135 N-NPF looking on G2334 V-PAP-NPF afar off G575 PREP : among G1722 PREP whom G3739 R-DPF was G2258 V-IXI-3S Mary G3137 N-NSF Magdalene G3094 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ Mary G3137 N-NSF the G3588 T-NSF mother G3384 N-NSF of James G2385 N-GSM the G3588 T-GSM less G3398 A-GSM and G2532 CONJ of Joses G2500 , and G2532 CONJ Salome G4539 N-NSF ;
41 ( R-NPF Who G3739 R-NPF also G2532 CONJ , when G3753 ADV he was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1722 PREP Galilee G1056 N-DSF , followed G190 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ ministered G1247 V-IAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM ; ) and G2532 CONJ many G4183 A-NPF other G3588 T-NPF women G243 A-NPF which came up with G4872 V-2AAP-NPF him G846 P-DSM unto G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF .
42 And G2532 CONJ now G2235 ADV when the even G3798 A-GSF was come G1096 V-2ADP-GSF , because G1893 CONJ it was G2258 V-IXI-3S the preparation G3904 N-NSF , that is G3603 , the day before the sabbath G4315 N-NSN ,
43 Joseph G2501 N-PRI of G575 PREP Arimathaea G707 N-GSF , an honorable G2158 A-NSM counselor G1010 N-NSM , which G3739 R-NSM also G2532 CONJ waited for V-IXI-3S the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM , came G2064 V-2AAI-3S , and went in G1525 V-2AAI-3S boldly G5111 V-AAP-NSM unto G4314 PREP Pilate G4091 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ craved G154 V-AMI-3S the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN of Jesus G2424 N-GSM .
44 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM marveled G2296 V-AAI-3S if G1487 COND he were already dead G2348 V-RAI-3S : and G2532 CONJ calling G4341 V-ADP-NSM unto him G3588 T-ASM the G3588 T-ASM centurion G2760 N-ASM , he asked G1905 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM whether G1487 COND he had been any while dead G599 V-2AAI-3S .
45 And G2532 CONJ when he knew G1097 V-2AAP-NSM it of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSM centurion G2760 N-GSM , he gave G1433 V-ADI-3S the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN to Joseph G2501 N-PRI .
46 And G2532 CONJ he bought G59 V-AAP-NSM fine linen G4616 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ took him down G2507 V-2AAP-NSM , and wrapped him in G1750 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-DSF linen G4616 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ laid G2698 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM in G1722 PREP a sepulcher G3419 N-DSN which G3739 R-NSN was G2258 V-IXI-3S hewn G2998 V-RPP-NSN out of G1537 PREP a rock G4073 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ rolled G4351 V-AAI-3S a stone G3037 N-ASM unto G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF door G2374 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN sepulcher G3419 N-GSN .
47 And G1161 CONJ Mary G3137 N-NSF Magdalene G3094 N-NSF and G2532 CONJ Mary G3137 N-NSF the mother of Joses G2500 beheld G2334 V-IAI-3P where G4226 he was laid G5087 V-PPI-3S .
