2 Kings 1 (ESV) English Standard Version

1 After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.
2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, "Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness."
3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?
4 Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'"So Elijah went.
5 The messengers returned to the king, and he said to them, "Why have you returned?"
6 And they said to him, "There came a man to meet us, and said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, Thus says the LORD, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'"
7 He said to them, "What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?"
8 They answered him, "He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist." And he said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."
9 Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "O man of God, the king says, 'Come down.'"
10 But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty." Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
11 Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, "O man of God, this is the king's order, 'Come down quickly!'"
12 But Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty." Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
13 Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, "O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight.
14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight."
15 Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So he arose and went down with him to the king
16 and said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron- is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?- therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'"
17 So he died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.
18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

2 And Ahaziah H274 fell down H5307 W-VQY3MS through H1157 PREP a lattice H7639 in his upper chamber H5944 that H834 RPRO was in Samaria H8111 , and was sick H2470 : and he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Go H1980 VQI2MP , inquire H1875 of Baal H1176 - zebub the god H430 CDP of Ekron H6138 whether H518 PART I shall recover H2421 of this disease H2483 .
3 But the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H1696 VPQ3MS to H413 PREP Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 , Arise H6965 VQI2MS , go up H5927 to meet H7125 L-VQFC the messengers H4397 of the king H4428 NMS of Samaria H8111 , and say H1696 unto H413 PREP them , Is it not because H1097 there is not H369 NPAR a God H430 EDP in Israel H3478 , that ye H859 PPRO-2MS go H1980 to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of Baal H1176 - zebub the god H430 NAME-4MP of Ekron H6138 ?
4 Now therefore H3651 thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Thou shalt not H3808 ADV come down H3381 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS that bed H4296 on which H834 RPRO thou art gone up H5927 , but H3588 CONJ shalt surely die H4191 VQFA . And Elijah H452 departed H1980 W-VQY3MS .
5 And when the messengers H4397 turned back H7725 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Why H4100 IPRO are ye now H2088 PMS turned back H7725 ?
6 And they said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , There came H5927 a man H376 NMS up H5927 to meet H7125 us , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP us , Go H1980 VQI2MP , turn again H7725 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS that H834 RPRO sent H7971 VQQ3MS you , and say H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Is it not because H1097 there is not H369 NPAR a God H430 EDP in Israel H3478 , that thou H859 PPRO-2MS sendest H7971 to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of Baal H1176 - zebub the god H430 NAME-4MP of Ekron H6138 ? therefore H3651 L-ADV thou shalt not H3808 ADV come down H3381 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS that bed H4296 on which H834 RPRO thou art gone up H5927 , but H3588 CONJ shalt surely die H4191 VQFA .
7 And he said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , What H4100 IPRO manner H4941 CMS of man H376 D-NMS was he which H834 RPRO came up H5927 to meet H7125 you , and told H1696 W-VPY3MS you these H428 words H1697 AMP ?
8 And they answered H559 W-VQY3MP him , He was a hairy man H376 NMS , and girt H247 with a girdle H232 of leather H5785 NMS about his loins H4975 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , It H1931 PPRO-3MS is Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 .
9 Then the king sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him a captain H8269 of fifty H2572 MMP with his fifty H2572 . And he went up H5927 W-VHY3MS to H413 PREP-3MS him : and , behold H2009 IJEC , he sat H3427 VQPMS on H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of a hill H2022 . And he spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thou man H376 NMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP , the king H4428 D-NMS hath said H1696 VPQ3MS , Come down H3381 .
10 And Elijah H452 answered H6030 and said H1696 W-VPY3MS to H413 PREP the captain H8269 of fifty H2572 , If H518 W-PART I H589 PPRO-1MS be a man H376 NMS of God H430 EDP , then let fire H784 CMS come down H3381 from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and consume H398 thee and thy fifty H2572 . And there came down H3381 fire H784 CMS from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and consumed H398 W-VQY3FS him and his fifty H2572 .
11 Again H7725 also he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him another H312 AMS captain H8269 of fifty H2572 MMP with his fifty H2572 . And he answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , O man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , thus H3541 hath the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 VQQ3MS , Come down H3381 quickly H4120 .
12 And Elijah H452 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , If H518 PART I H589 PPRO-1MS be a man H376 NMS of God H430 NAME-4MP , let fire H784 CMS come down H3381 from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and consume H398 thee and thy fifty H2572 . And the fire H784 CMS of God H430 EDP came down H3381 from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and consumed H398 W-VQY3FS him and his fifty H2572 .
13 And he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS again H7725 a captain H8269 of the third H7992 fifty H2572 MMP with his fifty H2572 . And the third H7992 D-ONUM captain H8269 of fifty H2572 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS and fell H3766 on H5921 PREP his knees H1290 before H5048 L-PREP Elijah H452 , and besought H2603 him , and said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , O man H376 NMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let my life H5315 W-GFS , and the life H5315 W-GFS of these H428 PMP fifty H2572 MMP thy servants H5650 , be precious H3365 in thy sight H5869 .
14 Behold H2009 IJEC , there came fire down H3381 from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and burnt up H398 W-VQY3FS the two H8147 ONUM captains H8269 CMP of the former H7223 fifties H2572 with their fifties H2572 : therefore let my life H5315 CFS-1MS now H6258 W-ADV be precious H3365 in thy sight H5869 .
15 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Elijah H452 , Go down H3381 with H854 him : be not afraid H3372 of M-CMP-3MS him . And he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went down H3381 W-VQY3MS with H854 him unto H413 PREP the king H4428 .
16 And he said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Forasmuch as ADV thou hast sent H7971 messengers H4397 to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of Baal H1176 - zebub the god H430 NAME-4MP of Ekron H6138 , is it not because H1097 there is no H369 NPAR God H430 EDP in Israel H3478 to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of his word H1697 ? therefore H3651 L-ADV thou shalt not H3808 ADV come down H3381 off H4480 M-PREP-3FS that bed H4296 on which H834 RPRO thou art gone up H5927 , but H3588 CONJ shalt surely die H4191 VQFA .
17 So he died H4191 W-VQY3MS according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS which H834 RPRO Elijah H452 had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS . And Jehoram H3088 reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 PREP-3MS in the second H8147 MFD year H8141 B-CFS of Jehoram H3088 the son H1121 NMS of Jehoshaphat H3092 King H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 : because H3588 CONJ he had H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 ADV son H1121 NMS .
18 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Ahaziah H274 which H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478 LMS ?
