Esther 1 (NKJV) New King James Version

1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia),
2 in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel,
3 that in the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his officials and servants -- the powers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces being before him --
4 when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all.
5 And when these days were completed, the king made a feast lasting seven days for all the people who were present in Shushan the citadel, from great to small, in the court of the garden of the king's palace.
6 There were white and blue linen curtains fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on silver rods and marble pillars; and the couches were of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of alabaster, turquoise, and white and black marble.
7 And they served drinks in golden vessels, each vessel being different from the other, with royal wine in abundance, according to the generosity of the king.
8 In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man's pleasure.
9 Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus,
11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold.
12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him.
13 Then the king said to the wise men who understood the times (for this was the king's manner toward all who knew law and justice,
14 those closest to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who had access to the king's presence, and who ranked highest in the kingdom):
15 "What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her by the eunuchs?"
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: "Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.
17 "For the queen's behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come.'
18 "This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king's officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus there will be excessive contempt and wrath.
19 "If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.
20 "When the king's decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small."
21 And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan.
22 Then he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people.

3 In the third H7969 MFS year H8141 B-CFS of his reign H4427 , he made H6213 VQQ3MS a feast H4960 NMS unto all H3605 L-CMS his princes H8269 CMP-3MS and his servants H5650 W-CMS-3MS ; the power H2428 of Persia H6539 and Media H4074 W-EMS , the nobles H6579 and princes H8269 CMP-3MS of the provinces H4082 , being before H6440 him :
4 When he showed H7200 the riches H6239 of his glorious H3519 kingdom H4438 CFP-3MS and the honor H3366 NMS of his excellent H8597 majesty H1420 many H7227 AMP days H3117 NMS , even a hundred H3967 W-BFS and fourscore H8084 days H3117 NMS .
5 And when these H428 D-DPRO-3MP days H3117 D-NMP were expired H4390 , the king H4428 D-NMS made H6213 VQQ3MS a feast H4960 NMS unto all H3605 L-CMS the people H5971 that were present H4672 in Shushan H7800 the palace H1002 , both unto great H1419 and small H6996 , seven H7651 RMS days H3117 NMP , in the court H2691 of the garden H1594 of the king H4428 \'s palace H1055 ;
6 Where were white H2353 , green H3768 , and blue H8504 , hangings , fastened H270 with cords H2256 B-CMP of fine linen H948 and purple H713 to H5921 PREP silver H3701 rings H1550 and pillars H5982 of marble H8336 : the beds H4296 were of gold H2091 NMS and silver H3701 , upon H5921 PREP a pavement H7531 of red H923 , and blue H8336 , and white H1858 , and black marble H5508 .
7 And they gave them drink H8248 in vessels H3627 of gold H2091 NMS , (the vessels H3627 being diverse H8138 one from another H3627 , ) and royal H4438 CFP wine H3196 W-CMS in abundance H7227 AMS , according to the state H3027 of the king H4428 .
8 And the drinking H8360 was according to the law H1881 ; none H369 NPAR did compel H597 : for H3588 CONJ so H3651 ADV the king H4428 D-NMS had appointed H3245 to H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the officers H7227 AMS of his house H1004 NMS-3MS , that they should do H6213 L-VQFC according to every man H376 NMS \'s pleasure H7522 .
9 Also H1571 CONJ Vashti H2060 the queen H4436 made H6213 VQQ3MS a feast H4960 for the women H802 GFP in the royal H4438 house H1004 CMS which H834 RPRO belonged to king H4428 Ahasuerus H325 .
10 On the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , when the heart H3820 NMS of the king H4428 D-NMS was merry H2895 with wine H3196 , he commanded H559 VQQ3MS Mehuman H4104 , Biztha H968 , Harbona H2726 , Bigtha H903 , and Abagtha H5 , Zethar H2242 , and Carcas H3752 , the seven H7651 RMS chamberlains H5631 that served H8334 in the presence H6440 CMP of Ahasuerus H325 the king H4428 D-NMS ,
11 To bring H935 L-VHFC Vashti H2060 the queen H4436 before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 D-NMS with the crown H3804 royal H4438 CFP , to show H7200 the people H5971 and the princes H8269 her beauty H3308 : for H3588 CONJ she H1931 was fair H2896 to look on H4758 NMS .
12 But the queen H4436 Vashti H2060 refused H3985 to come H935 L-VQFC at the king H4428 D-NMS \'s commandment H1697 by RPRO his chamberlains H5631 : therefore was the king H4428 D-NMS very H3966 ADV wroth H7107 , and his anger H2534 burned H1197 in him .
13 Then the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to the wise men H2450 , which knew H3045 VQPMS the times H6256 , ( CONJ for CONJ so H3651 ADV was the king H4428 D-NMS \'s manner H1697 CMS toward H6440 L-CMP all H3605 NMS that knew H3045 VQPMS law H1881 and judgment H1779 :
14 And the next H7138 unto H413 PREP-3MS him was Carshena H3771 , Shethar H8369 , Admatha H133 , Tarshish H8659 LFS , Meres H4825 , Marsena H4826 , and Memucan H4462 , the seven H7651 RMS princes H8269 CMP of Persia H6539 and Media H4074 W-EMS , which saw H7200 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s face H6440 CMP , and which sat H3427 the first H7223 in the kingdom H4438 ; )
15 What H4100 IGAT shall we do H6213 unto the queen H4436 Vashti H2060 according to law H1881 , because H5921 PREP she hath not H3808 ADV performed H6213 VQQ3MS the commandment H3982 of the king H4428 D-NMS Ahasuerus H325 by H3027 B-CFS the chamberlains H5631 ?
16 And Memucan H4462 answered H559 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 D-NMS and the princes H8269 , Vashti H2060 the queen H4436 hath not H3808 NADV done wrong H5753 to H5921 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS only H905 L-CMS-3MS , but H3588 CONJ also to H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the princes H8269 , and to H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are in all H3605 NMS the provinces H4082 of the king H4428 D-NMS Ahasuerus H325 .
17 For H3588 CONJ this deed H1697 NMS of the queen H4436 shall come abroad H3318 VQY3MS unto H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS women H802 D-NFP , so that they shall despise H959 their husbands H1167 in their eyes H5869 , when it shall be reported H559 , The king H4428 D-NMS Ahasuerus H325 commanded H559 VQQ3MS Vashti H2060 the queen H4436 to be brought in H935 L-VHFC before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him , but she came H935 not H3808 W-NPAR .
18 Likewise shall the ladies H8282 of Persia H6539 and Media H4074 W-EMS say H559 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 unto all H3605 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s princes H8269 CMP , which H834 RPRO have heard of VQQ3MP the deed H1697 CMS of the queen H4436 . Thus shall there arise too much H1767 contempt H963 and wrath H7110 .
19 If H518 PART it please H2895 the king H4428 D-NMS , let there go H3318 VQY3MS a royal H4438 CFP commandment H1697 NMS from L-CMP him , and let it be written H3789 among the laws H1881 of the Persians H6539 and the Medes H4074 W-EMS , that it be not H3808 W-NPAR altered H5674 , That H834 RPRO Vashti H2060 come H935 VQY3FS no H3808 W-NPAR more before H6440 L-CMP king H4428 D-NMS Ahasuerus H325 ; and let the king H4428 D-NMS give H5414 VHFA her royal estate H4438 CFP unto another H7468 that is better H2896 than H4480 PREP-3FS she .
20 And when the king H4428 D-NMS \'s decree H6599 which H834 RPRO he shall make H6213 VQY3MS shall be published H8085 throughout all H3605 B-CMS his empire H4438 CFP-3MS , ( CONJ for CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3FS is great H7227 AFS , ) all H3605 W-CMS the wives H802 D-NFP shall give H5414 to their husbands H1167 honor H3366 NMS , both to great H1419 and small H6996 .
21 And the saying H1697 D-NMS pleased H3190 the king H4428 D-NMS and the princes H8269 ; and the king H4428 D-NMS did H6213 W-VQY3MS according to the word H1697 K-NMS of Memucan H4462 :
22 For he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS letters H5612 into H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the king H4428 D-NMS \'s provinces H4082 , into H413 PREP every province H4082 according to the writing H3791 thereof , and to H413 PREP every people H5971 NMS after their language H3956 , that every H3605 NMS man H376 NMS should H1961 bear rule H8323 in his own house H1004 B-CMS-3MS , and that it should be published H1696 according to the language H3956 of every people H5971 .
