1
Now
it
came
to
pass
in
the
third
year
of
Hoshea
son
of
Elah
king
of
Israel,
that
Hezekiah
the
son
of
Ahaz
king
of
Judah
began
to
reign.
2
Twenty
and
five
years
old
was
he
when
he
began
to
reign;
and
he
reigned
twenty
and
nine
years
in
Jerusalem.
His
mother’s
name
also
was
Abi,
the
daughter
of
Zachariah.
3
And
he
did
that
which
was
right
in
the
sight
of
the
LORD,
according
to
all
that
David
his
father
did.
4
He
removed
the
high
places,
and
brake
the
images,
and
cut
down
the
groves,
and
brake
in
pieces
the
brasen
serpent
that
Moses
had
made:
for
unto
those
days
the
children
of
Israel
did
burn
incense
to
it:
and
he
called
it
Nehushtan.
5
He
trusted
in
the
LORD
God
of
Israel;
so
that
after
him
was
none
like
him
among
all
the
kings
of
Judah,
nor
any
that
were
before
him.
6
For
he
clave
to
the
LORD,
and
departed
not
from
following
him,
but
kept
his
commandments,
which
the
LORD
commanded
Moses.
7
And
the
LORD
was
with
him;
and
he
prospered
whithersoever
he
went
forth:
and
he
rebelled
against
the
king
of
Assyria,
and
served
him
not.
8
He
smote
the
Philistines,
even
unto
Gaza,
and
the
borders
thereof,
from
the
tower
of
the
watchmen
to
the
fenced
city.
9
And
it
came
to
pass
in
the
fourth
year
of
king
Hezekiah,
which
was
the
seventh
year
of
Hoshea
son
of
Elah
king
of
Israel,
that
Shalmaneser
king
of
Assyria
came
up
against
Samaria,
and
besieged
it.
10
And
at
the
end
of
three
years
they
took
it:
even
in
the
sixth
year
of
Hezekiah,
that
is
the
ninth
year
of
Hoshea
king
of
Israel,
Samaria
was
taken.
11
And
the
king
of
Assyria
did
carry
away
Israel
unto
Assyria,
and
put
them
in
Halah
and
in
Habor
by
the
river
of
Gozan,
and
in
the
cities
of
the
Medes:
12
Because
they
obeyed
not
the
voice
of
the
LORD
their
God,
but
transgressed
his
covenant,
and
all
that
Moses
the
servant
of
the
LORD
commanded,
and
would
not
hear
them,
nor
do
them.
13
Now
in
the
fourteenth
year
of
king
Hezekiah
did
Sennacherib
king
of
Assyria
come
up
against
all
the
fenced
cities
of
Judah,
and
took
them.
14
And
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
sent
to
the
king
of
Assyria
to
Lachish,
saying,
I
have
offended;
return
from
me:
that
which
thou
puttest
on
me
will
I
bear.
And
the
king
of
Assyria
appointed
unto
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
three
hundred
talents
of
silver
and
thirty
talents
of
gold.
15
And
Hezekiah
gave
him
all
the
silver
that
was
found
in
the
house
of
the
LORD,
and
in
the
treasures
of
the
king’s
house.
16
At
that
time
did
Hezekiah
cut
off
the
gold
from
the
doors
of
the
temple
of
the
LORD,
and
from
the
pillars
which
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
had
overlaid,
and
gave
it
to
the
king
of
Assyria.
17
And
the
king
of
Assyria
sent
Tartan
and
Rabsaris
and
Rab-shakeh
from
Lachish
to
king
Hezekiah
with
a
great
host
against
Jerusalem.
And
they
went
up
and
came
to
Jerusalem.
And
when
they
were
come
up,
they
came
and
stood
by
the
conduit
of
the
upper
pool,
which
is
in
the
highway
of
the
fuller’s
field.
18
And
when
they
had
called
to
the
king,
there
came
out
to
them
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
which
was
over
the
household,
and
Shebna
the
scribe,
and
Joah
the
son
of
Asaph
the
recorder.
19
And
Rab-
shakeh
said
unto
them,
Speak
ye
now
to
Hezekiah,
Thus
saith
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
What
confidence
is
this
wherein
thou
trustest?
20
Thou
sayest,
(but
they
are
but
vain
words,)
I
have
counsel
and
strength
for
the
war.
Now
on
whom
dost
thou
trust,
that
thou
rebellest
against
me?
21
Now,
behold,
thou
trustest
upon
the
staff
of
this
bruised
reed,
even
upon
Egypt,
on
which
if
a
man
lean,
it
will
go
into
his
hand,
and
pierce
it:
so
is
Pharaoh
king
of
Egypt
unto
all
that
trust
on
him.
22
But
if
ye
say
unto
me,
We
trust
in
the
LORD
our
God:
is
not
that
he,
whose
high
places
and
whose
altars
Hezekiah
hath
taken
away,
and
hath
said
to
Judah
and
Jerusalem,
Ye
shall
worship
before
this
altar
in
Jerusalem?
23
Now
therefore,
I
pray
thee,
give
pledges
to
my
lord
the
king
of
Assyria,
and
I
will
deliver
thee
two
thousand
horses,
if
thou
be
able
on
thy
part
to
set
riders
upon
them.
24
How
then
wilt
thou
turn
away
the
face
of
one
captain
of
the
least
of
my
master’s
servants,
and
put
thy
trust
on
Egypt
for
chariots
and
for
horsemen?
25
Am
I
now
come
up
without
the
LORD
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
The
LORD
said
to
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
destroy
it.
26
Then
said
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebna,
and
Joah,
unto
Rab-shakeh,
Speak,
I
pray
thee,
to
thy
servants
in
the
Syrian
language;
for
we
understand
it:
and
talk
not
with
us
in
the
Jews’
language
in
the
ears
of
the
people
that
are
on
the
wall.
27
But
Rab-shakeh
said
unto
them,
Hath
my
master
sent
me
to
thy
master,
and
to
thee,
to
speak
these
words?
hath
he
not
sent
me
to
the
men
which
sit
on
the
wall,
that
they
may
eat
their
own
dung,
and
drink
their
own
piss
with
you.
28
Then
Rab-shakeh
stood
and
cried
with
a
loud
voice
in
the
Jews
language,
and
spake,
saying,
Hear
the
word
of
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria:
29
Thus
saith
the
king,
Let
not
Hezekiah
deceive
you:
for
he
shall
not
be
able
to
deliver
you
out
of
his
hand:
30
Neither
let
Hezekiah
make
you
trust
in
the
LORD,
saying,
The
LORD
will
surely
deliver
us,
and
this
city
shall
not
be
delivered
into
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria.
31
Hearken
not
to
Hezekiah:
for
thus
saith
the
king
of
Assyria,
Make
an
agreement
with
me
by
a
present,
and
come
out
to
me,
and
then
eat
ye
every
man
of
his
own
vine,
and
every
one
of
his
fig
tree,
and
drink
ye
every
one
the
waters
of
his
cistern:
32
Until
I
come
and
take
you
away
to
a
land
like
your
own
land,
a
land
of
corn
and
wine,
a
land
of
bread
and
vineyards,
a
land
of
oil
olive
and
of
honey,
that
ye
may
live,
and
not
die:
and
hearken
not
unto
Hezekiah,
when
he
persuadeth
you,
saying,
The
LORD
will
deliver
us.
33
Hath
any
of
the
gods
of
the
nations
delivered
at
all
his
land
out
of
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where
are
the
gods
of
Hamath,
and
of
Arpad?
where
are
the
gods
of
Sepharvaim,
Hena,
and
Ivah?
have
they
delivered
Samaria
out
of
mine
hand?
35
Who
are
they
among
all
the
gods
of
the
countries,
that
have
delivered
their
country
out
of
mine
hand,
that
the
LORD
should
deliver
Jerusalem
out
of
mine
hand?
36
But
the
people
held
their
peace,
and
answered
him
not
a
word:
for
the
king’s
commandment
was,
saying,
Answer
him
not.
37
Then
came
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
which
was
over
the
household,
and
Shebna
the
scribe,
and
Joah
the
son
of
Asaph
the
recorder,
to
Hezekiah
with
their
clothes
rent,
and
told
him
the
words
of
Rab-shakeh.
1 Corinthians 15:32
32
If
after
the
manner
of
men
I
have
fought
with
beasts
at
Ephesus,
what
advantageth
it
me,
if
the
dead
rise
not?
let
us
eat
and
drink;
for
to
morrow
we
die.

For

And

Thou

`Now,

thou
hast

reed,
on
Egypt;
which
a
man

--
so
is
Pharaoh
king

Egypt
to

those
trusting
on
him.
22
`And
when
ye
say
unto
me,
Unto
Jehovah
our
God
we
have
trusted,
is
it
not
He
whose
high
places
and
whose
altars
Hezekiah
hath
turned
aside,
and
saith
to
Judah
and
to
Jerusalem,
Before
this
altar
do
ye
bow
yourselves

Jerusalem?
23
`And,
now,
give
a
pledge
for
thee,
I
pray
thee,
to
my
lord
the
king
of
Asshur,
and
I
give

thousand
horses,

24
And
how

thou
turn
back

least
of
the
servants
of
my
lord,
that
thou
dost
trust
for
thee
on
Egypt
for
chariot,
and
for
horsemen?
25
Now,
without
Jehovah
have
I
come
up
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
Jehovah
said
unto
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
thou
hast
destroyed
it.`
26
And
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah
saith
--
and
Shebna,
and
Joah
--
to
the
chief
of
the
butlers,
`Speak,
we
pray
thee,
unto
thy
servants
in
Aramaean,
for
we
are

and
do
not
speak
with
us
in
Jewish,
in
the
ears
of
the
people
who
are

27
And
the
chief
of
the
butlers
saith
unto
them,
`For
thy
lord,
and
unto
thee,
hath
my
lord
sent
me
to

these
words?
is
it

28
And
the
chief

speaketh

saith,

Eliakim

and
Shebnah

Joah

19
And
Rabshakeh
said
unto
them,
Say

Thus
saith

the

What

20
Thou

Now

Now,
behold,
thou

whereon

so

unto
all
that

22
But
if
ye
say
unto
me,
We
trust
in
Jehovah
our
God;
is
not
that
he,
whose
high
places
and
whose
altars
Hezekiah
hath
taken
away,
and
hath
said
to
Judah
and
to
Jerusalem,
Ye

23
Now
therefore,
I
pray

give
pledges

the

Assyria,
and
I
will

two
thousand

24
How
then
canst
thou
turn
away

face
of
one
captain
of
the
least

my

servants,
and
put
thy

on
Egypt
for
chariots
and
for
horsemen?
25
Am
I
now
come
up
without
Jehovah
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
Jehovah
said
unto
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
destroy
it.
26
Then
said
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebnah,
and
Joah,
unto
Rabshakeh,
Speak,
I
pray
thee,
to
thy
servants
in
the
Syrian
language;
for
we
understand
it:
and
speak
not
with
us
in
the
Jews
language,
in
the
ears
of
the
people
that
are
on
the
wall.
27
But
Rabshakeh
said
unto
them,
Hath
my
master
sent
me
to
thy
master,
and
to
thee,
to
speak
these
words?
hath
he
not
sent
me
to
the
men
that
sit
on
the
wall,
to
eat
their
own
dung,
and
to
drink
their
own
water
with
you?
28
Then
Rabshakeh
stood,
and
cried
with
a
loud
voice
in
the
Jews
language,
and
spake,
saying,
Hear
ye
the
word
of
the
great

the

29
Thus
saith
the
king,
Let

31
Hearken
not
to
Hezekiah:
for
thus
saith
the
king
of
Assyria,
Make
your
peace
with
me,
and
come
out
to

and
eat
ye
every
one
of
his

and
every

of
his

32
Until

took
them.
14
And
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
sent
to
the
king
of
Assyria
to
Lachish,
saying,
I
have
offended;
return
from
me:
that
which
thou
puttest
on
me
will
I

And
the
king
of
Assyria
appointed
unto
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
three
hundred
talents
of
silver
and
thirty
talents
of
gold.
15
And
Hezekiah
gave
{cf15i

all
the
silver
that
was
found
in
the
house
of
the
LORD,
and
in
the
treasures
of
the
king-s
house.
16
At
that
time
did
Hezekiah
cut
off
{cf15i
the
gold
from}
the
doors
of
the
temple
of
the
LORD,
and
{cf15i

the

which
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
had

and
gave
it
to
the

of
Assyria.
17
And
the
king
of
Assyria
sent
Tartan
and
Rab-saris
and
Rabshakeh
from
Lachish
to
king
Hezekiah
with
a
great
army
unto
Jerusalem.
And
they
went
up
and
came
to
Jerusalem.
And
when
they
were
come
up,
they
came
and
stood
by
the
conduit
of
the
upper
pool,
which
is
in
the
highway
of
the
fuller-s
field.
18
And
when
they
had
called
to
the
king,
there
came
out
to
them
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
which
was
over
the
household,
and
Shebnah
the
scribe,
and
Joah
the
son
of
Asaph
the
recorder.
19
And
Rabshakeh
said
unto
them,
Say
ye
now
to
Hezekiah,
Thus
saith
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
What
confidence
is

wherein
thou

20
Thou
sayest,
but
they
are
but

{cf15i
There

Now
on
whom
dost

trust,
that
thou
hast
rebelled
against
me?
21
Now,
behold,
thou
trustest
upon
the
staff
of
this
bruised
reed,
even
upon
Egypt;
whereon
if
a
man
lean,
it
will
go
into
his
hand,
and
pierce

so
is
Pharaoh
king
of
Egypt
unto
all
that
trust
on
him.
22
But
if
ye
say
unto
me,
We
trust
in
the
LORD
our
God:
is
not
that
he,
whose
high
places
and
whose
altars
Hezekiah
hath
taken
away,
and
hath
said
to
Judah
and
to
Jerusalem,
Ye
shall
worship
before
this
altar
in
Jerusalem?
23
Now
therefore,
I
pray
thee,
give
pledges
to
my
master
the
king
of
Assyria,
and
I
will
give
thee
two
thousand
horses,
if
thou
be
able
on
thy

to
set
riders
upon
them.
24
How
then
canst
thou
turn
away
the
face
of
one
captain
of
the
least
of
my
master-s
servants,
and
put
thy
trust
on
Egypt
for
chariots
and
for
horsemen?
25
Am
I
now
come
up
without
the
LORD
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
The
LORD
said
unto
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
destroy
it.
26
Then
said
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebnah,
and
Joah,
unto
Rabshakeh,
Speak,
I
pray
thee,
to
thy
servants
in
the
Syrian
language;
for
we
understand
it:
and
speak
not
with
us
in
the
Jews-
language,
in
the
ears
of
the
people
that
are
on
the
wall.
27
But
Rabshakeh
said
unto
them,
Hath
my
master
sent
me
to
thy
master,
and
to
thee,
to
speak
these
words?
{cf15i
hath
he
not
sent
me}
to
the
men
which
sit
on
the
wall,
to
eat
their
own
dung,
and
to
drink
their
own
water
with
you?
28
Then
Rabshakeh
stood,
and
cried
with
a
loud
voice
in
the
Jews-
language,
and
spake,
saying,
Hear
ye
the
word
of
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria.
29
Thus
saith
the
king,
Let
not
Hezekiah
deceive
you;
for
he
shall
not
be
able
to
deliver
you
out
of
his

30

and
this

be
given
into
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria.
31
Hearken
not
to
Hezekiah:
for
thus
saith
the
king
of
Assyria,
Make
your
peace
with
me,
and
come
out
to
me;
and
eat
ye
every

and
every

32
Until

and
hearken
not
unto
Hezekiah,
when
he
persuadeth

saying,
The
LORD
will
deliver
us.
33
Hath
any
of
the
gods
of
the

ever
delivered
his

out
of
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where

where
are
the

And

in

according

all
that
David
his

did.
4
He
removed

departed
not

following
him,

kept
his

which
the

commanded
Moses.

And
the

to
the

that
Shalmaneser
king
of
Assyria
came

Samaria,
and
besieged
it.
10
And
at
the

of
three

they
took
it:
even
in
the
sixth
year
of
Hezekiah,
that
is
in
the
ninth
year
of
Hoshea
king
of
Israel,
Samaria
was
taken.
11
And
the

Assyria
did

and
put
them
in
Halah
and

Habor
by
the

transgressed
his

and
all
that
Moses

23
Now

24
How

25
Am

The

26
Then
said
Eliakim

He
rebelled
against
the
king
of
Assyria
and
refused
to
submit
to
him.
8
He
defeated
the
Philistines
as
far
as
Gaza
and
its
territory,
from
the
watchtower
to
the
city
fortress.
9
In
the
fourth
year
of
King
Hezekiah's
reign
(it
was
the
seventh
year
of
the
reign
of
Israel's
King
Hoshea,
son
of
Elah),
King
Shalmaneser
of
Assyria
marched
up
against
Samaria
and
besieged
it.
10
After
three
years
he
captured
it
(in
the
sixth
year
of
Hezekiah's
reign);
in
the
ninth
year
of
King
Hoshea's
reign
over
Israel
Samaria
was
captured.
11
The
king
of
Assyria
deported
the
people
of
Israel
to
Assyria.
He
settled
them
in
Halah,
along
the
Habor
(the
river
of
Gozan),
and
in
the
cities
of
the
Medes.
12
This
happened
because
they
did
not
obey
the
LORD
their
God
and
broke
his
agreement
with
them.
They
did
not
pay
attention
to
and
obey
all
that
Moses,
the
LORD's
servant,
had
commanded.
13
In
the
fourteenth
year
of
King
Hezekiah's
reign,
King
Sennacherib
of
Assyria
marched
up
against
all
the
fortified
cities
of
Judah
and
captured
them.
14
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
sent
this
message
to
the
king
of
Assyria,
who
was
at
Lachish,
"I
have
violated
our
treaty.
If
you
leave,
I
will
do
whatever
you
demand."
So
the
king
of
Assyria
demanded
that
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
pay
three
hundred
talents
of
silver
and
thirty
talents
of
gold.
15
Hezekiah
gave
him
all
the
silver
in
the
LORD's
temple
and
in
the
treasuries
of
the
royal
palace.
16
At
that
time
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
stripped
the
metal
overlays
from
the
doors
of
the
LORD's
temple
and
from
the
posts
which
he
had
plated
and
gave
them
to
the
king
of
Assyria.
17
The
king
of
Assyria
sent
his
commanding
general,
the
chief
eunuch,
and
the
chief
adviser
from
Lachish
to
King
Hezekiah
in
Jerusalem,
along
with
a
large
army.
They
went
up
and
arrived
at
Jerusalem.
They
went
and
stood
at
the
conduit
of
the
upper
pool
which
is
located
on
the
road
to
the
field
where
they
wash
and
dry
cloth.
18
They
summoned
the
king,
so
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
the
palace
supervisor,
accompanied
by
Shebna
the
scribe
and
Joah
son
of
Asaph,
the
secretary,
went
out
to
meet
them.
19
The
chief
adviser
said
to
them,
"Tell
Hezekiah:
'This
is
what
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
says:
"What
is
your
source
of
confidence?
20
Your
claim
to
have
a
strategy
and
military
strength
is
just
empty
talk.
In
whom
are
you
trusting
that
you
would
dare
to
rebel
against
me?
21
Now
look,
you
must
be
trusting
in
Egypt,
that
splintered
reed
staff.
If
a
man
leans
for
support
on
it,
it
punctures
his
hand
and
wounds
him.
That
is
what
Pharaoh
king
of
Egypt
does
to
all
who
trust
in
him.
22
Perhaps
you
will
tell
me,
'We
are
trusting
in
the
LORD
our
God.'
But
Hezekiah
is
the
one
who
eliminated
his
high
places
and
altars
and
then
told
the
people
of
Judah
and
Jerusalem,
'You
must
worship
at
this
altar
in
Jerusalem.'
23
Now
make
a
deal
with
my
master
the
king
of
Assyria,
and
I
will
give
you
two
thousand
horses,
provided
you
can
find
enough
riders
for
them.
24
Certainly
you
will
not
refuse
one
of
my
master's
minor
officials
and
trust
in
Egypt
for
chariots
and
horsemen.
25
Furthermore
it
was
by
the
command
of
the
LORD
that
I
marched
up
against
this
place
to
destroy
it.
The
LORD
told
me,
'March
up
against
this
land
and
destroy
it.'"'"
26
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
Shebna,
and
Joah
said
to
the
chief
adviser,
"Speak
to
your
servants
in
Aramaic,
for
we
understand
it.
Don't
speak
with
us
in
the
Judahite
dialect
in
the
hearing
of
the
people
who
are
on
the
wall."
27
But
the
chief
adviser
said
to
them,
"My
master
did
not
send
me
to
speak
these
words
only
to
your
master
and
to
you.
His
message
is
also
for
the
men
who
sit
on
the
wall,
for
they
will
eat
their
own
excrement
and
drink
their
own
urine
along
with
you."
28
The
chief
adviser
then
stood
there
and
called
out
loudly
in
the
Judahite
dialect,
"Listen
to
the
message
of
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria.
29
This
is
what
the
king
says:
'Don't
let
Hezekiah
mislead
you,
for
he
is
not
able
to
rescue
you
from
my
hand!
30
Don't
let
Hezekiah
talk
you
into
trusting
in
the
LORD
when
he
says,
"The
LORD
will
certainly
rescue
us;
this
city
will
not
be
handed
over
to
the
king
of
Assyria."
31
Don't
listen
to
Hezekiah!'
For
this
is
what
the
king
of
Assyria
says,
'Send
me
a
token
of
your
submission
and
surrender
to
me.
Then
each
of
you
may
eat
from
his
own
vine
and
fig
tree
and
drink
water
from
his
own
cistern,
32
until
I
come
and
take
you
to
a
land
just
like
your
own—
a
land
of
grain
and
new
wine,
a
land
of
bread
and
vineyards,
a
land
of
olive
trees
and
honey.
Then
you
will
live
and
not
die.
Don't
listen
to
Hezekiah,
for
he
is
misleading
you
when
he
says,
"The
LORD
will
rescue
us."
33
Have
any
of
the
gods
of
the
nations
actually
rescued
his
land
from
the
power
of
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where
are
the
gods
of
Hamath
and
Arpad?
Where
are
the
gods
of
Sepharvaim,
Hena,
and
Ivvah?
Indeed,
did
any
gods
rescue
Samaria
from
my
power?
35
Who
among
all
the
gods
of
the
lands
has
rescued
their
lands
from
my
power?
So
how
can
the
LORD
rescue
Jerusalem
from
my
power?'"
36
The
people
were
silent
and
did
not
respond,
for
the
king
had
ordered,
"Don't
respond
to
him."
37
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
the
palace
supervisor,
accompanied
by
Shebna
the
scribe
and
Joah
son
of
Asaph,
the
secretary,
went
to
Hezekiah
with
their
clothes
torn
and
reported
to
him
what
the
chief
adviser
had
said.
1 Corinthians 15:32
32
If
from
a
human
point
of
view
I
fought
with
wild
beasts
at
Ephesus,
what
did
it
benefit
me?
If
the
dead
are

let

Sennacherib
of
Assyria
went
to

the

Sennacherib
defeated
them
all.
14
Then
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
sent
a

the
king

Assyria
at
Lachish.
Hezekiah
said,
"I
have
done
wrong.
Leave
me

Then
the
king
of
Assyria
told
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
to

over
11
tons
of
silver

over
1
ton

Hezekiah

Eliakim
was

Joah
was

19
The
commander
said
to
them,
"Tell
Hezekiah
this
is
what
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria
says:
'What
are
you
trusting
in
to
help
you?
20
If
you
say,
"I
trust
in
power
and
great
battle
plans,"
then
that
is
useless.
Now
I
ask
you,
who
do
you
trust
so
much
that
you
are
willing
to
rebel
against
me?
21
Are
you
depending
on
Egypt
to
help
you?
Egypt
is
like
a
broken
walking
stick.
If
you
lean
on
it
for
support,
it
will
only
hurt
you
and
make
a
hole
in
your
hand.
Pharaoh,
the
king
of
Egypt,
cannot
be
trusted
by
anyone
who
depends
on
him
for
help.
22
Maybe
you
will
say,
"We
trust
the
Lord
our
God
to
help
us."
But
I
know
that
Hezekiah
destroyed
the
altars
and
high
places
where
people
worshiped
the
Lord.
Hezekiah
told
the
people
of
Judah
and
Jerusalem,
"You
must
worship
only
at
this
one
altar
here
in
Jerusalem."
23
'If
you
still
want
to
fight
my
master,
the
king
of
Assyria,
I
will
make
this
agreement
with
you.
I
promise
that
I
will
give
you
2000
horses
if
you
can
find
enough
men
to
ride
them
into
battle.
24
But
even
then
you
couldn't
beat
one
of
my
master's
lowest
ranking
officers.
So
why
do
you
still
depend
on
Egypt's
chariots
and
horse
soldiers?
25
'Now,
do
you
think
I
came
to
this
country
to
destroy
it
without
the
Lord's
help?
No,
the
Lord
said
to
me,
"Go
up
against
this
country
and
destroy
it!"'"
26
Then
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
Shebna,
and
Joah
said
to
the
commander,
"Please
speak
to
us
in
Aramaic.
We
understand
that
language.
Don't
speak
to
us
in
the
language
of
Judah
because
the
people
on
the
wall
will
understand
you."
27
But
the
commander
said
to
them,
"My
master
did
not
send
me
to
speak
only
to
you
and
your
master.
I
was
also
sent
to
speak
to
those
people
sitting
on
the
wall.
They,
too,
will
not
have
enough
food
or
water;
they,
too,
will
eat
their
own
waste
and
drink
their
own
urine
like
you!
"
28
Then
the
commander
shouted
loudly
in
Hebrew,
"Hear
this
message
from
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria!
29
The
king
says,
'Don't
let
Hezekiah
fool
you,
because
he
cannot
save
you
from
my
power.
30
Don't
let
Hezekiah
make
you
trust
in
the
Lord.'
Hezekiah
says,
'The
Lord
will
save
us.
The
king
of
Assyria
will
not
defeat
this
city.'
31
But
don't
listen
to
Hezekiah.
The
king
of
Assyria
says
this:
'Do
this
favor
for
me;
come
out
to
me
and
then
everyone
will
be
free
to
have
grapes
from
their
own
vines,
figs
from
their
own
trees,
and
water
from
their
own
well.
32
You
can
do
this
until
I
come
and
take
you
away
to
a
land
like
your
own.
In
that
new
land,
you
will
have
good
grain
and
new
wine,
bread,
vineyards,
olive
oil,
and
honey.
Then
you
can
live
and
not
die.
But
don't
listen
to
Hezekiah.
He
is
trying
to
change
your
mind.
He
is
saying,
"The
Lord
will
save
us."
33
Did
any
of
the
gods
of
the
other
nations
save
their
land
from
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where
are
the
gods
of
Hamath
and
Arpad?
Where
are
the
gods
of
Sepharvaim,
Hena,
and
Ivvah?
Did
they
save
Samaria
from
me?
35
Did
any
of
the
gods

the
other
countries
save
their
land
from
me?
No!
So
do
you
think
the
Lord
will
save
Jerusalem
from
me?'"
36
But
the
people
were
silent.
They
did
not
say
a
word
to
the
commander
because
King
Hezekiah
had
commanded
them,
"Don't
say
anything
to
him."
37
Then
the
palace
manager
(Eliakim
son

Hilkiah),
the
royal
secretary
(Shebna),
and
the
record
keeper
(Joah
son

went
to
Hezekiah.
Their
clothes
were
torn
to
show
they
were
upset.
They
told
Hezekiah
everything
the
Assyrian
commander
had
said.

of
Achaz
king
of
Juda
Gr.
reigned
began
to
reign.
2
Gr.
a
son
of
25
years
in
his
reigning
Five
and
twenty
years
old
was
he
when
he
began
to
reign,
and
he
reigned
twenty
and
nine
years
in
Jerusalem:
and
his
mother’s
name
was
Abu,
daughter
of
Zacharias.
3
And
he
did
that
which
was
right
in
the
sight
of
the
Lord,
according
to
all
that
his
father
David
did.
4
He
Or,
destroyed
removed
the
high
places,
and
broke
in
pieces
the
pillars,
and
utterly
destroyed
the
groves,
and
the
brazen
serpent
which
Moses
made:
because
until
those
days
the
children
of
Israel
burnt
incense
to
it:
and
he
called
it
Neesthan.
5
He
Gr.
hoped
trusted
in
the
Lord
God
of
Israel;
and
after
him
there
was
not
any
like
him
among
the
kings
of
Juda,
Gr.
and
nor
among
those
that
were
before
him.
6
And
he
clave
to
the
Lord,
he
departed
not
Gr.
from
behind
him
from
following
him;
and
he
kept
his
commandments,
as
many
as
he
commanded
Moses.
7
And
the
Lord
was
with
him;
and
he
was
wise
in
all
that
he
undertook:
and
he
revolted
from
the
king
of
the
Assyrians,
and
served
him
not.
8
He
smote
the
Philistines
even
to
Gaza,
and
to
the
border
of
it,
from
the
tower
of
the
watchmen
even
to
the
strong
city.
9
And
it
came
to
pass
in
the
fourth
year
of
King
Ezekias
(this
is
the
seventh
year
of
Osee
son
of
Ela
king
of
Israel,)
that
Salamanassar
king
of
the
Assyrians
came
up
against
Samaria,
and
besieged
it.
10
And
he
took
it
Gr.
from
at
the
end
of
three
years,
in
the
sixth
year
of
Ezekias,
(this
is
the
ninth
year
of
Osee
king
of
Israel,
when
Samaria
was
taken.)
11
And
the
king
of
the
Assyrians
carried
away
the
Gr.
Samaria
to
the
Assyrians
Samaritans
to
Assyria,
and
put
them
in
Alae
and
in
Abor,
by
the
river
Gozan,
and
in
the
mountains
of
the
Medes;
12
because
they
hearkened
not
to
the
voice
of
the
Lord
their
God,
and
transgressed
his
covenant,
even
in
all
things
that
Moses
the
servant
of
the
Lord
commanded,
and
hearkened
not
to
them,
nor
did
them.
13
And
in
the
fourteenth
year
of
king
Ezekias
came
up
Sennacherim
king
of
the
Assyrians
against
the
strong
cities
of
Juda,
and
took
them.
14
And
Ezekias
king
of
Juda
sent
messengers
to
the
king
of
the
Assyrians
to
Lachis,
saying,
I
have
offended;
depart
from
me:
whatsoever
thou
shalt
lay
upon
me,
I
will
bear.
And
the
king
of
Assyria
laid
upon
Ezekias
king
of
Juda
a
tribute
of
three
hundred
talents
of
silver,
and
thirty
talents
of
gold.
15
And
Ezekias
gave
all
the
silver
that
was
found
in
the
house
of
the
Lord,
and
in
the
treasures
of
the
king’s
house.
16
At
that
time
Ezekias
cut
off
the
gold
from
the
doors
of
the
temple,
and
from
the
pillars
which
Ezekias
king
of
Juda
had
overlaid
with
gold,
and
gave
Gr.
them
it
to
the
king
of
the
Assyrians.
17
And
the
king
of
the
Assyrians
sent
Tharthan
and
Raphis
and
Rapsakes
from
Lachis
to
king
Ezekias
with
a
Gr.
heavy
strong
force
against
Jerusalem.
And
they
went
up
and
came
to
Jerusalem,
and
stood
by
the
aqueduct
of
the
upper
pool,
which
is
by
the
way
of
the
fuller’s
field.
18
And
they
cried
to
Ezekias:
and
there
came
to
him
Heliakim
the
son
of
Chelcias
the
steward,
and
Somnas
the
scribe,
and
Joas
the
son
of
Saphat
the
recorder.
19
And
Rapsakes
said
to
them,
Say
now
to
Ezekias,
Thus
says
the
king,
the
great
king
of
the
Assyrians,
What
is
this
confidence
wherein
thou
trustest?
20
Thou
hast
said,
(but
they
are
Gr.
words
of
lips
mere
words,)
I
have
counsel
and
strength
for
war.
Now
then
Gr.
in
whom
trusting,
etc.
in
whom
dost
thou
trust,
that
thou
hast
revolted
from
me?
21
See
now,
art
thou
trusting
for
thyself
on
this
broken
staff
of
reed,
even
upon
Egypt?
whosoever
shall
stay
himself
upon
it,
it
shall
even
go
into
his
hand,
and
pierce
it:
so
is
Pharao
king
of
Egypt
to
all
that
trust
on
him.
22
And
whereas
thou
hast
said
to
me,
We
trust
on
the
Lord
God:
is
not
this
he,
Gr.
his
whose
high
places
and
altars
Ezekias
has
removed,
and
has
said
to
Juda
and
Jerusalem,
Ye
shall
worship
before
this
altar
in
Jerusalem?
23
And
now,
I
pray
you,
make
an
agreement
with
my
lord
the
king
of
the
Assyrians,
and
I
will
give
thee
two
thousand
horses,
if
thou
shalt
be
able
on
thy
part
to
Gr.
give
set
riders
upon
them.
24
How
then
wilt
thou
turn
away
the
face
of
one
Gr.
local
ruler
petty
governor,
from
among
the
least
of
my
lord’s
servants?
whereas
thou
trustest
for
thyself
on
Egypt
for
chariots
and
horsemen.
25
And
now
have
we
come
up
without
the
Lord
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
The
Lord
said
to
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
destroy
it.
26
And
Heliakim
the
son
of
Chelkias,
and
Somnas,
and
Joas,
said
to
Rapsakes,
Speak
now
to
thy
servants
in
the
Syrian
language,
for
we
understand
it;
and
speak
not
with
us
in
the
Jewish
language:
and
why
dost
thou
speak
in
the
ears
of
the
people
that
are
on
the
wall?
27
And
Rapsakes
said
to
them,
Has
my
master
sent
me
to
thy
master,
and
to
thee,
to
speak
these
words?
has
he
not
sent
me
to
the
men
who
sit
on
the
wall,
that
they
may
eat
their
own
dung,
and
drink
their
own
water
together
with
you.
28
And
Rapsakes
stood,
and
cried
with
a
loud
voice
in
the
Jewish
language,
and
spoke,
and
said,
Hear
the
words
of
the
great
king
of
the
Assyrians:
29
thus
says
the
king,
Let
not
Ezekias
encourage
you
with
words:
for
he
shall
not
be
able
to
deliver
you
out
of
his
hand.
30
And
let
not
Ezekias
cause
you
to
trust
on
the
Lord,
saying,
The
Lord
will
certainly
deliver
us;
this
city
shall
not
be
delivered
Gr.
in
into
the
hand
of
the
king
of
the
Assyrians:
hearken
not
to
Ezekias:
31
for
thus
says
the
king
of
the
Assyrians,
Lit.
make
a
blessing
with
me
Gain
my
favour,
and
come
forth
to
me,
and
every
man
shall
drink
of
the
wine
of
his
own
vine,
and
every
man
shall
eat
of
his
own
fig-tree,
and
shall
drink
water
out
of
his
own
cistern;
32
until
I
come
and
remove
you
to
a
land
like
your
own
land,
a
land
of
corn
and
wine,
and
bread
and
vineyards,
a
land
of
olive
oil,
and
honey,
and
ye
shall
live
and
not
die:
and
do
not
ye
hearken
to
Ezekias,
for
he
deceives
you,
saying,
The
Lord
shall
deliver
you.
33
Have
the
Gods
of
the
nations
at
all
delivered
each
their
own
land
out
of
the
hand
of
the
king
of
the
Assyrians?
34
Where
is
the
god
of
Haemath,
and
of
Arphad?
where
is
the
god
of
Seppharvaim,
Ana,
and
Aba?
for
have
they
delivered
Samaria
out
of
my
hand?
35
Who
is
there
among
all
the
gods
of
the
countries,
who
have
delivered
their
countries
out
of
my
hand,
that
the
Lord
Gr.
shall
deliver
should
deliver
Jerusalem
out
of
my
hand?
36
But
the
men
were
silent,
and
answered
him
not
a
word:
for
there
was
a
commandment
of
the
king,
saying,
Ye
shall
not
answer
him.
37
And
Heliakim
the
son
of
Chelcias,
the
steward,
and
Somnas
the
scribe,
and
Joas
the
son
of
Saphat
the
recorder
came
in
to
Ezekias,
having
rent
their
garments;
and
they
reported
to
him
the
words
of
Rapsakes.

In
the

Hoshea
the

of
Elah
king
of

Hezekiah
the
son
of
Ahaz,
king
of
Judah,
began
to
rule.
2
He
was
twenty-five

when
he

king.
And
he
ruled
for
twenty-nine

in
Jerusalem.
His

Abi
the

3
Hezekiah
did
what
was
right
in
the

of
the

just
as
his
father
David
had
done.
4
He
took
away
the
high
places.
He
broke
down
the
holy
pillars
used
in
worship
and
cut
down
the
Asherah.
And
he
broke
in
pieces
the
brass
snake
that
Moses
had
made.
For
until
those
days
the
people
of
Israel
burned
special
perfume
to
it.
It
was
called
Nehushtan.
5
Hezekiah
trusted
in
the
Lord,
the
God
of
Israel.
There
was
no
one
like
him
among
all
the
kings
of
Judah
before
him
or
after
him.
6
For
he
held
to
the
Lord
and
did
not
stop
following
Him.
He
kept
His
Laws
which
the
Lord
had
given
Moses.
7
And
the
Lord
was
with
him.
Hezekiah
did
well
in
every
place
he
went.
He
turned
against
the
king
of
Assyria
and
did
not
work
for
him.
8
He
destroyed
the
Philistines
as
far
as
Gaza
and
its
land,
from
the
smallest
town
to
the
strongest
city.
9
In
the
fourth
year
of
King
Hezekiah,
the
seventh
year
of
Elah's
son
Hoshea
king
of
Israel,
King
Shalmaneser
of
Assyria
came
to
fight
against
Samaria.
His
army
gathered
around
it.
10
At
the
end
of
three
years
they
took
the
city.
Samaria
was
taken
by
Assyria
in
the
sixth
year
of
Hezekiah
and
the
ninth
year
of
King
Hoshea
of
Israel.
11
Then
the
king
of
Assyria
carried
the
people
of
Israel
away
against
their
will
to
Assyria.
He
had
them
live
in
Halah
and
on
the
Habor,
the
river
of
Gozan,
and
in
the
cities
of
the
Medes.
12
Because
the
people
of
Israel
did
not
obey
the
voice
of
the
Lord
their
God.
They
sinned
against
His
agreement
and
even
all
that
the
Lord's
servant
Moses
told
them.
They
would
not
listen
or
obey.
13
In
the
fourteenth
year
of
King
Hezekiah,
King
Sennacherib
of
Assyria
came
and
fought
against
all
the
strong
cities
of
Judah
and
took
them.
14
Then
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
sent
word
to
the
king
of
Assyria
at
Lachish,
saying,
"I
have
done
wrong;
leave
me.
I
will
pay
whatever
you
ask."
So
the
king
of
Assyria
had
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
pay
him
silver
weighing
as
much
as
300
men,
and
gold
weighing
as
much
as
thirty
men.
15
Hezekiah
gave
him
all
the
silver
that
was
found
in
the
house
of
the
Lord,
and
in
the
store-rooms
of
the
king's
house.
16
Then
he
cut
the
gold
off
the
doors
of
the
Lord's
house.
He
cut
the
gold
from
the
sides
of
the
door
which
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
had
covered
with
gold.
And
he
gave
it
to
the
king
of
Assyria.
17
Then
the
king
of
Assyria
sent
Tartan,
Rab-saris
and
Rabshakeh
with
a
large
army
from
Lachish
to
King
Hezekiah
at
Jerusalem.
So
they
went
up
and
came
to
Jerusalem.
They
came
and
stood
by
the
ditch
of
the
upper
pool,
which
is
on
the
road
to
the
fuller's
field.
18
When
they
called
to
the
king,
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebnah,
and
Joah
the
son
of
Asaph
came
out
to
them.
Eliakim
was
the
head
of
the
house.
Shebnah
was
the
writer,
and
Joah
wrote
down
the
things
of
the
nation.
19
Rabshakeh
said
to
them,
"Say
to
Hezekiah,
'This
is
what
the
great
king
of
Assyria
says.
"What
is
this
strength
of
heart
that
you
have?
20
You
say
with
empty
words,
'I
have
wisdom
and
strength
for
war.'
On
whom
do
you
trust,
that
you
have
turned
against
me?
21
Look,
you
are
trusting
now
in
Egypt.
It
is
a
walking
stick
like
a
piece
of
broken
river-grass.
It
will
cut
into
a
man's
hand
if
he
rests
on
it.
So
is
Pharaoh
king
of
Egypt
to
all
who
trust
in
him.
22
You
might
tell
me,
'We
trust
in
the
Lord
our
God.'
But
is
it
not
He
Whose
high
places
and
altars
Hezekiah
has
taken
away?
And
has
he
not
said
to
Judah
and
Jerusalem,
'You
must
worship
in
front
of
this
altar
in
Jerusalem'?
23
Come
now,
make
an
agreement
with
my
ruler
the
king
of
Assyria.
And
I
will
give
you
2,000
horses,
if
you
are
able
to
put
horsemen
on
them.
24
How
can
you
fight
back
one
captain
among
the
least
of
my
ruler's
servants,
when
you
trust
Egypt
for
war-wagons
and
horsemen?
25
Have
I
come
up
without
the
Lord
against
this
place
to
destroy
it?
The
Lord
said
to
me,
'Go
up
against
this
land
and
destroy
it.'
"
'
"
26
Then
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebnah,
and
Joah,
said
to
Rabshakeh,
"Speak
to
your
servants
in
the
Aramaic
language,
for
we
understand
it.
Do
not
speak
with
us
in
the
language
of
Judah.
The
people
on
the
wall
might
hear
it."
27
But
Rabshakeh
said
to
them,
"Has
my
ruler
sent
me
to
speak
these
words
to
your
ruler
and
to
you,
and
not
to
the
men
sitting
on
the
wall?
They
are
sure
to
suffer
with
you,
eating
and
drinking
their
own
body
waste."
28
Then
Rabshakeh
stood
and
called
out
with
a
loud
voice
in
the
language
of
Judah,
saying,
"Hear
the
word
of
the
great
king
of
Assyria.
29
The
king
says,
'Do
not
let
Hezekiah
lie
to
you.
For
he
will
not
be
able
to
save
you
from
my
power.
30
Do
not
let
Hezekiah
make
you
trust
in
the
Lord,
saying,
"The
Lord
will
save
us
for
sure.
And
this
city
will
not
be
given
to
the
king
of
Assyria."
31
Do
not
listen
to
Hezekiah.
For
the
king
of
Assyria
says,
"Make
your
peace
with
me
and
come
out
to
me.
Then
every
one
of
you
will
eat
of
his
own
vine
and
fig
tree.
And
every
one
of
you
will
drink
the
water
of
his
own
well.
32
Then
I
will
come
and
take
you
away
to
a
land
like
your
own
land.
It
is
a
land
of
grain
and
new
wine.
It
is
a
land
of
bread
and
grape-fields
and
olive
trees
and
honey.
There
you
will
live
and
not
die."
But
do
not
listen
to
Hezekiah
when
he
lies
to
you,
saying,
"The
Lord
will
save
us."
33
Has
any
one
of
the
gods
of
the
nations
saved
his
land
from
the
power
of
the
king

and
his

They

The

said
to
them,
"Tell
Hezekiah
this:
"'The
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
says:
What
can
you
trust
in
now?
20
You
say
you
have
battle
plans
and
power
for
war,
but
your
words
mean
nothing.
Whom
are
you
trusting
for
help
so
that
you
turn
against
me?
21
Look,
you
are
depending
on
Egypt
to
help
you,
but
Egypt
is
like
a
splintered
walking
stick.
If
you
lean
on
it
for
help,
it
will
stab
your
hand
and
hurt
you.
The
king
of
Egypt
will
hurt
all
those
who
depend
on
him.
22
You
might
say,
"We
are
depending
on
the
Lord
our
God,"
but
Hezekiah
destroyed
the
Lord's
altars
and
the
places
of
worship.
Hezekiah
told
Judah
and
Jerusalem,
"You
must
worship
only
at
this
one
altar
in
Jerusalem."
23
"'Now
make
an
agreement
with
my
master,
the
king
of
Assyria:
I
will
give
you
two
thousand
horses
if
you
can
find
enough
men
to
ride
them.
24
You
cannot
defeat
one
of
my
master's
least
important
officers,
so
why
do
you
depend
on
Egypt
to
give
you
chariots
and
horsemen?
25
I
have
not
come
to
attack
and
destroy
this
place
without
an
order
from
the
Lord.
The
Lord
himself
told
me
to
come
to
this
country
and
destroy
it.'"
26
Then
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
Shebna,
and
Joah
said
to
the
field
commander,
"Please
speak
to
us
in
the
Aramaic
language.
We
understand
it.
Don't
speak
to
us
in
Hebrew,
because
the
people
on
the
city
wall
can
hear
you."
27
"No,"
the
commander
said,
"my
master
did
not
send
me
to
tell
these
things
only
to
you
and
your
king.
He
sent
me
to
speak
also
to
those
people
sitting
on
the
wall
who
will
have
to
eat
their
own
dung
and
drink
their
own
urine
like
you."
28
Then
the
commander
stood
and
shouted
loudly
in
the
Hebrew
language,
"Listen
to
what
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
says!
29
The
king
says
you
should
not
let
Hezekiah
fool
you,
because
he
can't
save
you
from
my
power.
30
Don't
let
Hezekiah
talk
you
into
trusting
the
Lord
by
saying,
'The
Lord
will
surely
save
us.
This
city
won't
be
handed
over
to
the
king
of
Assyria.'
31
"Don't
listen
to
Hezekiah.
The
king
of
Assyria
says,
'Make
peace
with
me,
and
come
out
of
the
city
to
me.
Then
everyone
will
be
free
to
eat
the
fruit
from
his
own
grapevine
and
fig
tree
and
to
drink
water
from
his
own
well.
32
After
that
I
will
come
and
take
you
to
a
land
like
your
own
--
a
land
with
grain
and
new
wine,
bread
and
vineyards,
olives,
and
honey.
Choose
to
live
and
not
to
die!'
"Don't
listen
to
Hezekiah.
He
is
fooling
you
when
he
says,
'The
Lord
will
save
us.'
33
Has
a
god
of
any
other
nation
saved
his
people
from
the
power

the

Assyria?
34
Where

has
saved
his
people
from
me.
Neither
can
the
Lord
save
Jerusalem
from
my
power."
36
The
people
were
silent.
They
didn't
answer
the
commander
at
all,
because
King
Hezekiah
had
ordered,
"Don't
answer
him."
37
Then
Eliakim,
Shebna,
and
Joah
tore
their
clothes
to
show
how
upset
they
were.

So

What

hope

which
you
have
trusted?
20
Do
you
say
that
a
mere
word
of
the
lips
is
counsel
and
strength
for
battle;
now,
on
whom
have
you
trusted
that
you
have
rebelled

21
Now,
behold,
you
have
trusted
for
yourself
on
the

this
broken
reed,
on
Egypt,
which
if
a
man
lean

Hezekiah

removed,
and
has
said
to
Judah
and
to
Jerusalem,
Before
this
altar
you
shall
bow
yourselves
in
Jerusalem?
23
And,
now,
I
ask
you,
exchange
pledges
for
yourself
to
my
lord
the
king
of
Assyria,
and
I
will
give
to
you
two
thousand
horses
if
you
are
able
to
give
for
yourself
riders
on
them.
24
And
how
will
you
turn
back
the
face
of
one
prefect
of
the
least
of
the
servants
of
my
lord,
that
you
trust
for
yourself
upon
Egypt
for
chariots
and
for
horsemen?
25
Now,
have
I
come
up
against
this
place
to
destroy
it
without
Jehovah?
Jehovah
said
to
me,
Go
up
against
this
land,
and
you
shall
destroy
it.
26
And
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
and
Shebna,
and
Joah
said
to
the
chief
of
the
cupbearers,
Please
speak
Aramaic
to
your
servants,
for
we
understand;
and
do
not
speak
with
us
in
Jewish,
in
the
ears
of
the
people
on
the
wall.
27
And
the
chief
of
the
cupbearers
said
to
them,
Has
my
master
sent
me
to
speak
these
words
to
your
master,
and
to
you,
and
not
to
the
men
that
sit
on
the
wall,
to
eat
their
own
dung,
and
to
drink
the
water
of
their
feet
with
you?
28
And
the
chief
of
the
cupbearers
stood
and
called
with
a
great
voice
in
Jewish,
and
spoke
and
said,
Hear
the
word
of
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria;
29
So
says
the
king,
Do
not
let
Hezekiah
delude
you,
for
he
is
not
able
to
deliver
you
out
of
his
hand;
30
and
do
not
let
Hezekiah
make
you
trust
to
Jehovah,
saying,
Jehovah
delivering
shall
deliver
us;
and,
This
city
shall
not
be
given
into
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria.
31
Do
not
listen
to
Hezekiah,
for
so
says
the
king
of
Assyria,
Make
with
me
a
peace
treaty
and
come
out
to
me;
and
you
each
shall
eat
of
his
vine,
and
each
of
his
fig
tree,
and
you
each
shall
drink
of
the
waters
of
his
own
well,
32
until
I
come;
and
I
will
take
you
to
a
land
like
your
own
land,
a
land
of
grain
and
new
wine,
a
land
of
bread
and
vineyards,
a
land
of
olive
oil,
and
honey;
and
live,
and
do
not
die;
and
do
not
listen
to
Hezekiah,
when
he
persuades
you,
saying,
Jehovah
shall
deliver
us.
33
Have
the
gods
of
the
nations
at
all
delivered
each
his
land
out
of
the
hand
of
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where
are
the
gods
of
Hamath
and
Arpad?
Where
are
the
gods
of
Sepharvaim,
Hena,
and
Ivah,
that
they
have
delivered
Samaria
out
of
my
hand?
35
Who
among
all
the
gods
of
the
lands
have
delivered
their
land
out
of
my
hand,
that
Jehovah
should
deliver
Jerusalem
out
of
my
hand?
36
But
the
people
kept
silent
and
did
not
answer
him
a
word,
for
the
command
of
the
king
was,
saying,
Do
not
answer
him.
37
And
Eliakim
the
son
of
Hilkiah,
who
was
over
the
house,
and
Shebna
the
scribe,
and
Joah
the
son
of
Asaph
the
recorder,
came
in
to
Hezekiah,
having
torn
their
garments;
and
they
told
him
the
words
of
the
chief
of
the
cupbearers.
1 Corinthians 15:32
32
If
according
to
man
I
fought
with
beasts
in
Ephesus,
what
is
the
profit
to
me
if
the
dead
are
not
raised?
("Let
us
eat
and
drink,
for
tomorrow
we
die.")

1
In
the
third
year
of
Israel's
King
Hoshea
son
of
Elah,
Hezekiah
son
of
Ahaz
became
king
of
Judah.
2
He
was
25
years
old
when
he
became
king;
he
reigned
29
years
in
Jerusalem.
His
mother's
name
was
Abi
daughter
of
Zechariah.
3
He
did
what
was
right
in
the
LORD's
sight
just
as
his
ancestor
David
had
done.
4
He
removed
the
high
places
and
shattered
the
sacred
pillars
and
cut
down
the
Asherah
poles
.
He
broke
into
pieces
the
bronze
snake
that
Moses
made,
for
the
Israelites
burned
incense
to
it
up
to
that
time.
He
called
it
Nehushtan.
5
Hezekiah
trusted
in
the
LORD
God
of
Israel;
not
one
of
the
kings
of
Judah
was
like
him,
either
before
him
or
after
him.
6
He
held
fast
to
the
LORD
and
did
not
turn
from
following
Him
but
kept
the
commandments
the
LORD
had
commanded
Moses.
7
The
LORD
was
with
him,
and
wherever
he
went,
he
prospered.
He
rebelled
against
the
king
of
Assyria
and
did
not
serve
him.
8
He
defeated
the
Philistines
as
far
as
Gaza
and
its
borders,
from
watchtower
to
fortified
city.
9
In
the
fourth
year
of
King
Hezekiah,
which
was
the
seventh
year
of
Israel's
King
Hoshea
son
of
Elah,
Shalmaneser
king
of
Assyria
marched
against
Samaria
and
besieged
it.
10
The
Assyrians
captured
it
at
the
end
of
three
years.
In
the
sixth
year
of
Hezekiah,
which
was
the
ninth
year
of
Israel's
King
Hoshea,
Samaria
was
captured.
11
The
king
of
Assyria
deported
the
Israelites
to
Assyria
and
put
them
in
Halah
and
by
the
Habor,
Gozan's
river,
and
in
the
cities
of
the
Medes,
12
because
they
did
not
listen
to
the
voice
of
the
LORD
their
God
but
violated
His
covenant--
all
He
had
commanded
Moses
the
servant
of
the
LORD.
They
did
not
listen,
and
they
did
not
obey.
13
In
the
fourteenth
year
of
King
Hezekiah,
Sennacherib
king
of
Assyria
attacked
all
the
fortified
cities
of
Judah
and
captured
them.
14
So
Hezekiah
king
of
Judah
sent
word
to
the
king
of
Assyria
at
Lachish,
saying,
"I
have
done
wrong.
Withdraw
from
me.
Whatever
you
demand
from
me,
I
will
pay."
The
king
of
Assyria
demanded
from
King
Hezekiah
of
Judah
11
tons
of
silver
and
one
ton
of
gold.
15
So
Hezekiah
gave
him
all
the
silver
found
in
the
LORD's
temple
and
in
the
treasuries
of
the
king's
palace.
16
At
that
time
Hezekiah
stripped
the
gold
from
the
doors
of
the
LORD's
sanctuary
and
from
the
doorposts
he
had
overlaid
and
gave
it
to
the
king
of
Assyria.
17
Then
the
king
of
Assyria
sent
the
Tartan,
the
Rab-saris,
and
the
Rabshakeh,
along
with
a
massive
army,
from
Lachish
to
King
Hezekiah
at
Jerusalem.
They
advanced
and
came
to
Jerusalem,
and
they
took
their
position
by
the
aqueduct
of
the
upper
pool,
which
is
by
the
highway
to
the
Fuller's
Field.
18
Then
they
called
for
the
king,
but
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
who
was
in
charge
of
the
palace,
Shebnah
the
court
secretary,
and
Joah
son
of
Asaph,
the
court
historian,
came
out
to
them.
19
Then
the
Rabshakeh
said
to
them,
"Tell
Hezekiah
this
is
what
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria,
says:
'What
are
you
relying
on?
20
You
think
mere
words
are
strategy
and
strength
for
war.
What
are
you
now
relying
on
so
that
you
have
rebelled
against
me?
21
Look,
you
now
trust
in
Egypt,
the
stalk
of
this
splintered
reed,
which
if
a
man
leans
on
it
will
go
into
his
palm
and
pierce
it.
This
is
how
Pharaoh
king
of
Egypt
is
to
all
who
trust
in
him.
22
Suppose
you
say
to
me:
We
trust
in
the
LORD
our
God.
Isn't
He
the
One
whose
high
places
and
altars
Hezekiah
has
removed,
saying
to
Judah
and
to
Jerusalem:
You
must
worship
at
this
altar
in
Jerusalem?'
23
"So
now
make
a
bargain
with
my
master
the
king
of
Assyria.
I'll
give
you
2,000
horses
if
you're
able
to
supply
riders
for
them!
24
How
then
can
you
drive
back
a
single
officer
among
the
least
of
my
master's
servants
and
trust
in
Egypt
for
chariots
and
for
horsemen?
25
Have
I
attacked
this
place
to
destroy
it
without
the
LORD's
approval
?
The
LORD
said
to
me,
'Attack
this
land
and
destroy
it.'"
26
Then
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
Shebnah,
and
Joah
said
to
the
Rabshakeh,
"Please
speak
to
your
servants
in
Aramaic,
since
we
understand
it
.
Don't
speak
with
us
in
Hebrew
within
earshot
of
the
people
on
the
wall."
27
But
the
Rabshakeh
said
to
them,
"Has
my
master
sent
me
only
to
your
master
and
to
you
to
speak
these
words?
Hasn't
he
also
sent
me
to
the
men
who
sit
on
the
wall,
destined
with
you
to
eat
their
own
excrement
and
drink
their
own
urine?"
28
The
Rabshakeh
stood
and
called
out
loudly
in
Hebrew.
Then
he
spoke:
"Hear
the
word
of
the
great
king,
the
king
of
Assyria.
29
This
is
what
the
king
says:
'Don't
let
Hezekiah
deceive
you;
he
can't
deliver
you
from
my
hand.
30
Don't
let
Hezekiah
persuade
you
to
trust
in
the
LORD
by
saying:
Certainly
the
LORD
will
deliver
us!
This
city
will
not
be
handed
over
to
the
king
of
Assyria.'
31
"Don't
listen
to
Hezekiah,
for
this
is
what
the
king
of
Assyria
says:
'Make
peace
with
me
and
surrender
to
me.
Then
every
one
of
you
may
eat
from
his
own
vine
and
his
own
fig
tree,
and
every
one
may
drink
water
from
his
own
cistern
32
until
I
come
and
take
you
away
to
a
land
like
your
own
land--
a
land
of
grain
and
new
wine,
a
land
of
bread
and
vineyards,
a
land
of
olive
trees
and
honey--
so
that
you
may
live
and
not
die.
But
don't
listen
to
Hezekiah
when
he
misleads
you,
saying:
The
LORD
will
deliver
us.
33
Has
any
of
the
gods
of
the
nations
ever
delivered
his
land
from
the
power
of
the
king
of
Assyria?
34
Where
are
the
gods
of
Hamath
and
Arpad?
Where
are
the
gods
of
Sepharvaim,
Hena,
and
Ivvah?
Have
they
delivered
Samaria
from
my
hand?
35
Who
among
all
the
gods
of
the
lands
has
delivered
his
land
from
my
power?
So
how
is
the
LORD
to
deliver
Jerusalem?'"
36
But
the
people
kept
silent;
they
answered
him
not
a
word,
for
the
king's
command
was,
"Don't
answer
him."
37
Then
Eliakim
son
of
Hilkiah,
who
was
in
charge
of
the
palace,
Shebna
the
court
secretary,
and
Joah
son
of
Asaph,
the
court
historian,
came
to
Hezekiah
with
their
clothes
torn
and
reported
to
him
the
words
of
the
Rabshakeh.
1 Corinthians 15:32
32
If
I
fought
wild
animals
in
Ephesus
with
only
human
hope,
what
good
does
that
do
me?
If
the
dead
are
not
raised,
Let
us
eat
and
drink,
for
tomorrow
we
die.
