Exodus 1:1 (YLT) Young's Literal Translation

1 And these are the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5 And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.
6 And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;
7 and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.
8 And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,
9 and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel is more numerous and mighty than we;
10 give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.`
11 And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;
12 and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;
13 and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,
14 and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every kind of service in the field; all their service in which they have served is with rigour.
15 And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one is Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),
16 and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it is a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it is a daughter -- then she hath lived.`
17 And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;
18 and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?`
19 And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women, for they are lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!`
20 And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;
21 and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;
22 and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.`

6 And Joseph H3130 died H4191 W-VQY3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS that H1931 generation H1755 .
7 And the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 were fruitful H6509 , and increased abundantly H8317 , and multiplied H7235 W-VQY3MP , and waxed exceeding mighty H6105 ; and the land H776 D-GFS was filled H4390 W-VNY3FS with H854 them .
8 Now there arose up H6965 W-VQY3MS a new H2319 king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP Egypt H4714 , which H834 RPRO knew H3045 VQQ3MS not H3808 ADV Joseph H3130 .
9 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his people H5971 , Behold H2009 IJEC , the people H5971 NMS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 are more H7227 AMS and mightier H6099 than H4480 M-PREP-3MS we :
10 Come H3051 VQI2MS-3FS on , let us deal wisely H2449 with them ; lest H6435 CONJ they multiply H7235 VQQ3MS , and it come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that , when H3588 CONJ there falleth out H7122 any war H4421 NFS , they H1931 PPRO-3MS join H3254 also H1571 CONJ unto H5921 PREP our enemies H8130 , and fight H3898 against us , and so get them up H5927 out of H4480 PREP the land H776 D-GFS .
11 Therefore they did set H7760 W-VQY3MP over H5921 PREP-3MS them taskmasters H8269 CMP to H4616 L-CONJ afflict H6031 them with their burdens H5450 . And they built H1129 W-VQY3MS for Pharaoh H6547 treasure H4543 cities H5892 , Pithom H6619 and Rameses H7486 .
12 But the more H834 they afflicted H6031 them , the more H3651 ADV they multiplied H7235 VQQ3MS and grew H3651 ADV . And they were grieved H6973 because H6440 M-CMP of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
13 And the Egyptians H4714 made the children H1121 of Israel H3478 to serve H5647 with rigor H6531 :
14 And they made their lives H2416 bitter H4843 with hard H7186 bondage H5656 , in mortar H2563 , and in brick H3843 , and in all manner H3605 NMS of service H5656 in the field H7704 B-NMS : all H3605 NMS their service H5656 , wherein H834 RPRO they made them serve H5647 VQQ3MP , was with rigor H6531 .
15 And the king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS to the Hebrew H5680 midwives H3205 , of which H834 RPRO the name H8034 CMS of the one H259 D-ONUM was Shiphrah H8236 , and the name H8034 W-CMS of the other H8145 D-ONUM Puah H6326 :
16 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , When ye do the office of a midwife H3205 to the Hebrew women H5680 , and see H7200 them upon H5921 PREP the stools H70 ; if H518 PART it H1931 PPRO-3FS be a son H1121 NMS , then ye shall kill H4191 him : but if H518 PART it H1931 PPRO-3FS be a daughter H1323 CFS , then she shall live H2425 .
17 But the midwives H3205 feared H3372 God H430 D-EDP , and did H6213 VQQ3MP not H3808 W-NPAR as H834 K-RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 commanded H1696 VPQ3MS them , but saved H2421 the men children H3206 alive .
18 And the king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS called for H7121 W-VQY3MS the midwives H3205 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Why H4069 IPRO have ye done H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS , and have saved H2421 the men children H3206 alive ?
19 And the midwives H3205 said H559 unto H413 PREP Pharaoh H6547 EMS , Because H3588 CONJ the Hebrew women H5680 are not H3808 NADV as the Egyptian H4713 women H802 ; for H3588 CONJ they H2007 PPRO-3FP are lively H2422 , and are delivered H3205 ere H2962 B-ADV the midwives H3205 come in H935 VQY2MS unto H413 PREP them .
20 Therefore God H430 EDP dealt well H3190 with the midwives H3205 : and the people H5971 multiplied H7235 , and waxed very mighty H6105 .
21 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , because H3588 CONJ the midwives H3205 feared H3372 God H430 D-EDP , that he made H6213 W-VQY3MS them houses H1004 .
22 And Pharaoh H6547 EMS charged H6680 W-VPY3MS all H3605 NMS his people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Every H3605 NMS son H1121 that is born H3209 ye shall cast H7993 into the river H2975 , and every H3605 NMS daughter H1323 ye shall save alive H2421 .
