Judges 8:1 (YLT) Young's Literal Translation

1 And the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What is this thing thou hast done to us -- not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?` and they strive with him severely;
2 and he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?
3 Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?` Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.
4 And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who are with him -- wearied, and pursuing,
5 and he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who are at my feet, for they are wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.`
6 And the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?`
7 And Gideon saith, `Therefore -- in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand -- I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.`
8 And he goeth up thence to Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.
9 And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.`
10 And Zebah and Zalmunna are in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling are a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.
11 And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;
12 and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.
13 And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,
14 and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders -- seventy and seven men.
15 And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who are wearied bread?`
16 And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,
17 and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.
18 And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How -- the men whom ye slew in Tabor?` and they say, `As thou -- so they, one -- as the form of the king's sons.`
19 And he saith, `My brethren -- sons of my mother -- they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive -- I had not slain you.`
20 And he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;` and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he is yet a youth.
21 And Zebah saith -- also Zalmunna -- `Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man -- his might;` and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which are on the necks of their camels.
22 And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.`
23 And Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.`
24 And Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they are Ishmaelites.`
25 And they say, `We certainly give;` and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;
26 and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which are on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which are on the necks of their camels,
27 and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.
28 And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,
30 and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;
31 and his concubine, who is in Shechem, hath born to him -- even she -- a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.
32 And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.
33 And it cometh to pass, when Gideon is dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;
34 and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,
35 neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- according to all the good which he did with Israel.

And they did chide H7378 with H854 PREP-3MS him sharply H2394 .
2 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , What H4100 IPRO have I done H6213 VQQ1MS now H6258 ADV in comparison of you ? Is not H3808 D-NPAR the gleaning of the grapes H5955 of Ephraim H669 better H2896 AMS than the vintage H1210 of Abi H44 - ezer ?
3 God H430 EDP hath delivered H5414 VQQ3MS into your hands H3027 B-CFS-2MP the princes H8269 CMP of Midian H4080 , Oreb H6159 and Zeeb H2062 : and what H4100 W-IPRO was I able H3201 to do H6213 VQFC in comparison of you ? Then H227 ADV their anger H7307 was abated H7503 toward H5921 him , when he had said H1696 that H2088 D-PMS .
4 And Gideon H1439 came H935 W-VQY3MS to Jordan H3383 , and passed over H5674 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS , and the three H7969 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP men H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , faint H5889 , yet pursuing H7291 them .
5 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the men H376 of Succoth H5523 , Give H5414 , I pray you H4994 IJEC , loaves H3603 of bread H3899 NMS unto the people H5971 that H834 RPRO follow H7272 me ; for H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP be faint H5889 , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS am pursuing H7291 after H310 PREP Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 , kings H4428 CMP of Midian H4080 .
6 And the princes H8269 CMP of Succoth H5523 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Are the hands H3709 of Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 now H6258 ADV in thine hand H3027 B-CFS-2MS , that H3588 CONJ we should give H5414 bread H3899 NMS unto thine army H6635 ?
7 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Therefore H3651 L-ADV when the LORD H3068 EDS hath delivered H5414 Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 into mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS , then I will tear H1758 your flesh H1320 with H854 PREP the thorns H6975 of the wilderness H4057 D-NMS and with H854 W-PART briers H1303 .
8 And he went up H5927 W-VHY3MS thence H8033 M-ADV to Penuel H6439 , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them likewise H2063 : and the men H376 CMP of Penuel H6439 answered H6030 him as H834 K-RPRO the men H376 CMP of Succoth H5523 had answered H6030 VQQ3MP him .
9 And he spoke H559 W-VQY3MS also H1571 CONJ unto the men H376 of Penuel H6439 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , When I come again H7725 in peace H7965 , I will break down H5422 this H2088 D-PMS tower H4026 D-NMS .
10 Now Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 were in Karkor H7174 , and their hosts H4264 with H5973 PREP-3MP them , about fifteen H2568 thousand H505 W-BMS men , all H3605 NMS that were left H3498 of all H3605 NMS the hosts H4264 of the children H1121 CMP of the east H6924 NMS : for there fell H5307 a hundred H3967 MFS and twenty H6242 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS that drew H8025 sword H2719 GFS .
11 And Gideon H1439 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS by the way H1870 NMS of them that dwelt H7931 in tents H168 on the east H6924 M-NMS of Nobah H5025 and Jogbehah H3011 , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the host H4264 : for the host H4264 was H1961 VQQ3MS secure H983 .
12 And when Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 fled H5127 , he pursued H7291 W-VQY3MS after H310 them , and took H3920 the two H8147 ONUM kings H4428 CMP of Midian H4080 , Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 , and discomfited H2729 all H3605 W-CMS the host H4264 .
13 And Gideon H1439 the son H1121 of Joash H3101 returned H7725 from H4480 PREP battle H4421 before H4608 the sun H2775 was up ,
14 And caught H3920 a young man H5288 of the men H376 NMS of Succoth H5523 , and inquired H7592 of him : and he described H3789 unto H413 PREP-3MS him the princes H8269 CMP of Succoth H5523 , and the elders H2205 thereof , even threescore and seventeen H7657 ONUM men H376 NMS .
15 And he came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the men H376 CMP of Succoth H5523 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 , with whom H834 RPRO ye did upbraid H2778 me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Are the hands H3709 of Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 now H6258 ADV in thine hand H3027 B-CFS-2MS , that H3588 CONJ we should give H5414 bread H3899 NMS unto thy men H376 that are weary H3287 ?
16 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS the elders H2205 of the city H5892 D-GFS , and thorns H6975 of the wilderness H4057 D-NMS and briers H1303 , and with them he taught H3045 the men H376 CMP of Succoth H5523 .
17 And he beat down H5422 the tower H4026 of Penuel H6439 , and slew H2026 the men H376 CMP of the city H5892 D-GFS .
18 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS he unto H413 PREP Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 , What manner H375 IGAT of men H376 D-NMP were they whom H834 RPRO ye slew H2026 at Tabor H8396 ? And they answered H559 W-VQY3MS , As thou H3644 PREP-2MS art , so were they ; each one H259 MMS resembled H8389 the children H1121 of a king H4428 .
19 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , They H1992 PPRO-3MP were my brethren H251 NMP-1MS , even the sons H1121 of my mother H517 CFS-1MS : as the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , if H3863 CONJ ye had saved them alive H2421 , I would not H3808 NADV slay H2026 VQQ1MS you .
20 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Jether H3500 his firstborn H1060 , Up H6965 VQI2MS , and slay H2026 them . But the youth H5288 drew H8025 VQQ3MS not H3808 W-NPAR his sword H2719 : for H3588 CONJ he feared H3372 VQQ3MS , because H3588 CONJ he was yet H5750 a youth H5288 .
21 Then Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Rise H6965 VQI2MS thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and fall H6293 upon us : for H3588 CONJ as the man H376 is , so is his strength H1369 . And Gideon H1439 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and slew H2026 Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 , and took away H3947 W-VQY3MS the ornaments H7720 that H834 RPRO were on their camels H1581 \' necks H6677 .
22 Then the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Gideon H1439 , Rule H4910 thou over us , both H1571 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and H1571 CONJ thy son H1121 , and thy son H1121 \'s son H1121 also H1571 CONJ : for H3588 CONJ thou hast delivered H3467 us from the hand H3027 M-GFS of Midian H4080 .
23 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , I H589 PPRO-1MS will not H3808 ADV rule H4910 over you , neither H3808 ADV shall my son H1121 NMS-1MS rule H4910 over you : the LORD H3068 EDS shall rule H4910 over you .
24 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , I would desire H7592 a request H7596 of H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you , that ye would give H5414 me every man H376 NMS the earrings H5141 CMS of his prey H7998 . ( CONJ For CONJ they had golden H2091 NMS earrings H5141 , because H3588 CONJ they H1992 were Ishmaelites H3459 . )
25 And they answered H559 W-VQY3MP , We will willingly give H5414 them . And they spread H6566 a garment H8071 D-NFS , and did cast H7993 therein H8033 ADV-3FS every man H376 NMS the earrings H5141 CMS of his prey H7998 .
26 And the weight H4948 of the golden H2091 earrings H5141 that H834 RPRO he requested H7592 was H1961 W-VQY3MS a thousand H505 W-BMS and seven H7651 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP shekels of gold H2091 NMS ; beside H905 ornaments H7720 , and collars H5188 , and purple H713 raiment H899 W-CMP that was on the kings H4428 CMP of Midian H4080 , and beside H905 the chains H6060 that H834 RPRO were about their camels H1581 \' necks H6677 .
27 And Gideon H1439 made H6213 W-VQY3MS an ephod H646 thereof , and put H3322 it in his city H5892 , even in Ophrah H6084 : and all H3605 Israel H3478 went thither a whoring H2181 after H310 PREP-3MS it : which thing became H1961 W-VQY3MS a snare H4170 unto Gideon H1439 , and to his house H1004 .
28 Thus was Midian H4080 subdued H3665 before H6440 L-CMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , so that they lifted up H5375 their heads H7218 no H3808 W-NPAR more H3254 . And the country H776 D-GFS was in quietness H8252 forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS in the days H3117 B-CMP of Gideon H1439 .
29 And Jerubbaal H3378 the son H1121 of Joash H3101 went H1980 W-VQY3MS and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS in his own house H1004 .
30 And Gideon H1439 had H1961 VQQ3MP threescore and ten H7657 ONUM sons H1121 NMP of his body H3409 begotten H3318 VQCMP : for H3588 CONJ he had H1961 VQQ3MP many H7227 AFP wives H802 GFP .
31 And his concubine H6370 that H834 RPRO was in Shechem H7927 , she H1931 PPRO-3FS also H1571 CONJ bore H3205 VQQ3FS him a son H1121 NMS , whose name H8034 CMS-3MS he called H7760 W-VQY3MS Abimelech H40 .
32 And Gideon H1439 the son H1121 of Joash H3101 died H4191 W-VQY3MS in a good H2896 NFS old age H7872 , and was buried H6912 in the sepulcher H6913 of Joash H3101 his father H1 CMS-3MS , in Ophrah H6084 of the Abi H33 - ezrites .
33 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as soon as H834 Gideon H1439 was dead H4191 , that the children H1121 of Israel H3478 turned again H7725 , and went a whoring H2181 after H310 PREP Baalim H1168 , and made H7760 W-VQY3MP Baal H1170 - berith their god H430 L-NMP .
34 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 remembered H2142 not H3808 W-NPAR the LORD H3068 EDS their God H430 , who had delivered H5337 them out of the hands H3027 M-GFS of all H3605 NMS their enemies H341 on every side H5439 :
35 Neither H3808 W-NPAR showed H6213 VQQ3MP they kindness H2617 NMS to H5973 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Jerubbaal H3378 , namely , Gideon H1439 , according to all H3605 the goodness H2896 which H834 RPRO he had showed H6213 VQQ3MS unto H5973 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
