1 യാക്കോബ് തന്റെ വഴിക്കു പോയി; ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാര്‍ അവന്റെ എതിരെ വന്നു.

2 യാക്കോബ് അവരെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ഇതു ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സേന എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു മഹനയീം എന്നു പേര്‍ ഇട്ടു.

3 അനന്തരം യാക്കോബ് എദോംനാടായ സേയീര്‍ദേശത്തു തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ തനിക്കു മുമ്പായി ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു.

4 അവരോടു കല്പിച്ചതു എന്തെന്നാല്‍എന്റെ യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിനോടു ഇങ്ങനെ പറവിന്‍ നിന്റെ അടിയാന്‍ യാക്കോബ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നുഞാന്‍ ലാബാന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ പരദേശിയായി പാര്‍ത്തു ഇന്നുവരെ അവിടെ താമസിച്ചു.

5 എനിക്കു കാളയും കഴുതയും ആടും ദാസീദാസന്മാരും ഉണ്ടു; നിനക്കു എന്നൊടു കൃപ തോന്നേണ്ടതിന്നാകുന്നു യജമാനനെ അറിയിപ്പാന്‍ ആളയക്കുന്നതു.

6 ദൂതന്മാര്‍ യാക്കോബിന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ മടങ്ങി വന്നുഞങ്ങള്‍ നിന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ പോയി വന്നു; അവന്‍ നാനൂറു ആളുമായി നിന്നെ എതിരേല്പാന്‍ വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

7 അപ്പോള്‍ യാക്കോബ് ഏറ്റവും ഭ്രമിച്ചു ഭയവശനായി, തന്നോടു കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ജനത്തെയും ആടുകളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും ഒട്ടകങ്ങളെയും രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി വിഭാഗിച്ചു.

8 ഏശാവ് ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ നേരെ വന്നു അതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചാല്‍ മറ്റേ കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു ഔടിപ്പോകാമല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

9 പിന്നെ യാക്കോബ് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചതുഎന്റെ പിതാവായ അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ ദൈവവും എന്റെ പിതാവായ യിസ്ഹാക്കിന്റെ ദൈവവുമായുള്ളോവേ, നിന്റെ ദേശത്തേക്കും നിന്റെ ചാര്‍ച്ചക്കാരുടെ അടുക്കലേക്കും മടങ്ങിപ്പോക; ഞാന്‍ നിനക്കു നന്മ ചെയ്യുമെന്നു എന്നൊടു അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത യഹോവേ,

10 അടിയനോടു കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സകലദയെക്കും സകലവിശ്വസ്തതെക്കും ഞാന്‍ അപാത്രമത്രേ; ഒരു വടിയോടുകൂടെ മാത്രമല്ലോ ഞാന്‍ ഈ യോര്‍ദ്ദാന്‍ കടന്നതു; ഇപ്പോഴോ ഞാന്‍ രണ്ടു കൂട്ടമായി തീര്‍ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

11 എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്റെ കയ്യില്‍നിന്നു എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കേണമേ; പക്ഷേ അവന്‍ വന്നു എന്നെയും മക്കളോടുകൂടെ തള്ളയെയും നശിപ്പിക്കും എന്നു ഞാന്‍ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു.

12 നീയോഞാന്‍ നിന്നോടു നന്മ ചെയ്യും; നിന്റെ സന്തതിയെ പെരുപ്പംകൊണ്ടു എണ്ണിക്കൂടാത്ത കടല്‍കരയിലെ മണല്‍പോലെ ആക്കുമെന്നു അരുളിച്ചെയ്തുവല്ലോ.

13 അന്നു രാത്രി അവന്‍ അവിടെ പാര്‍ത്തു; തന്റെ പക്കല്‍ ഉള്ളതില്‍ തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവിന്നു സമ്മാനമായിട്ടു

14 ഇരുനൂറു കോലാടിനെയും ഇരുപതു കോലാട്ടുകൊറ്റനെയും ഇരുനൂറു ചെമ്മരിയാടിനെയും ഇരുപതു ചെമ്മരിയാട്ടുകൊറ്റനെയും

15 കറവുള്ള മുപ്പതു ഒട്ടകത്തെയും അവയുടെ കുട്ടികളെയും നാല്പതു പശുവിനെയും പത്തു കാളയെയും ഇരുപതു പെണ്‍കഴുതയെയും പത്തു കഴുതകൂട്ടിയെയും വേര്‍തിരിച്ചു.

16 തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരുടെ പക്കല്‍ ഔരോ കൂട്ടത്തെപ്രത്യേകം പ്രത്യേകമായി ഏല്പിച്ചു, തന്റെ ദാസന്മാരോടുനിങ്ങള്‍ എനിക്കു മുമ്പായി കടന്നുപോയി അതതു കൂട്ടത്തിന്നു മദ്ധ്യേ ഇടയിടുവിന്‍ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

17 ഒന്നാമതു പോകുന്നവനോടു അവന്‍ എന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഏശാവ് നിന്നെ കണ്ടുനീ ആരുടെ ആള്‍? എവിടെ പോകുന്നു? നിന്റെ മുമ്പില്‍ പോകുന്ന ഇവ ആരുടെ വക എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചാല്‍

18 നിന്റെ അടിയാന്‍ യാക്കോബിന്റെ വക ആകുന്നു; ഇതു യജമാനനായ ഏശാവിന്നു അയച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സമ്മാനം; അതാ, അവനും പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നു നീ പറയേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.

19 രണ്ടാമത്തവനോടും മൂന്നാമത്തവനോടും കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്ന എല്ലാവരോടുംനിങ്ങള്‍ ഏശാവിനെ കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ഇപ്രകാരം അവനോടുപറവിന്‍ ;

20 അതാ, നിന്റെ അടിയാന്‍ യാക്കോബ് പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു എന്നും പറവിന്‍ എന്നു അവന്‍ കല്പിച്ചു. എനിക്കു മുമ്പായിപോകുന്ന സമ്മാനംകൊണ്ടു അവനെ ശാന്തമാക്കീട്ടു പിന്നെ ഞാന്‍ അവന്റെ മുഖം കണ്ടുകൊള്ളാം; പക്ഷേ അവന്നു എന്നോടു ദയ തോന്നുമായിരിക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

21 അങ്ങനെ സമ്മാനം അവന്റെ മുമ്പായി പോയി; അവനോ അന്നു രാത്രി കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടെ പാര്‍ത്തു.

22 രാത്രിയില്‍ അവന്‍ എഴുന്നേറ്റു. തന്റെ രണ്ടു ഭാര്യമാരെയും രണ്ടു ദാസിമാരെയും പതിനൊന്നു പുത്രന്മാരയും കൂട്ടി യാബ്ബോക്‍ കടവു കടന്നു.

23 അങ്ങനെ അവന്‍ അവരെ കൂട്ടി ആറ്റിന്നക്കരെ കടത്തി; തനിക്കുള്ളതൊക്കെയും അക്കരെ കടത്തിയശേഷം യാക്കോബ് തനിയേ ശേഷിച്ചു;

24 അപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു പുരുഷന്‍ ഉഷസ്സാകുവോളം അവനോടു മല്ലു പിടിച്ചു.

25 അവനെ ജയിക്കയില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ അവന്‍ അവന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം തൊട്ടു; ആകയാല്‍ അവനോടു മല്ലുപിടിക്കയില്‍ യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടം ഉളുക്കിപ്പോയി.

26 എന്നെ വിടുക; ഉഷസ്സു ഉദിക്കുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞതിന്നുനീ എന്നെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചല്ലാതെ ഞാന്‍ നിന്നെ വിടുകയില്ല എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

27 നിന്റെ പേര്‍ എന്തു എന്നു അവന്‍ അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നുയാക്കോബ് എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

28 നീ ദൈവത്തോടും മനുഷ്യരോടും മല്ലുപിടിച്ചു ജയിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു നിന്റെ പേര്‍ ഇനി യാക്കോബ് എന്നല്ല യിസ്രായേല്‍ എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

29 യാക്കോബ് അവനോടുനിന്റെ പേര്‍ എനിക്കു പറഞ്ഞുതരേണം എന്നു അപേക്ഷിച്ചുനീ എന്റെ പേര്‍ ചോദിക്കുന്നതു എന്തു എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു, അവിടെവെച്ചു അവനെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

30 ഞാന്‍ ദൈവത്തെ മുഖാമുഖമായി കണ്ടിട്ടും എനിക്കു ജീവഹാനി വിന്നില്ല എന്നു യാക്കോബ് പറഞ്ഞു, ആ സ്ഥലത്തിന്നു പെനീയേല്‍ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

31 അവന്‍ പെനീയേല്‍ കടന്നു പോകുമ്പോള്‍ സൂര്യന്‍ ഉദിച്ചു; എന്നാല്‍ തുടയുടെ ഉളുകൂനിമിത്തം അവന്‍ മുടന്തിനടന്നു.

32 അവന്‍ യാക്കോബിന്റെ തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തൊടുകകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്‍മക്കള്‍ ഇന്നുവരെയും തുടയുടെ തടത്തിലെ ഞരമ്പു തിന്നാറില്ല.

2 And when ^H834 Jacob ^H3290 saw ^H7200 them , he said, ^H559 This ^H2088 is God's ^H430 host: ^H4264 and he called ^H7121 the name ^H8034 of that ^H1931 place ^H4725 Mahanaim. ^H4266

27 And he said ^H559 unto ^H413 him, What ^H4100 is thy name ^H8034 ? And he said, ^H559 Jacob. ^H3290

28 And he said, ^H559 Thy name ^H8034 shall be called ^H559 no ^H3808 more ^H5750 Jacob, ^H3290 but ^H3588 ^H518 Israel: ^H3478 for ^H3588 as a prince hast thou power ^H8280 with ^H5973 God ^H430 and with ^H5973 men, ^H376 and hast prevailed. ^H3201

29 And Jacob ^H3290 asked ^H7592 him , and said, ^H559 Tell ^H5046 me , I pray thee, ^H4994 thy name. ^H8034 And he said, ^H559 Wherefore ^H4100 is it ^H2088 that thou dost ask ^H7592 after my name ^H8034 ? And he blessed ^H1288 him there. ^H8033

31 And as ^H834 he passed over ^H5674 ^H853 Penuel ^H6439 the sun ^H8121 rose ^H2224 upon him , and he ^H1931 halted ^H6760 upon ^H5921 his thigh. ^H3409
