1 Samuel 26:1 (MKJV) Modern King James Version

1 And the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, Is not David hiding himself in the hill of Hachilah, on the edge of the desert?
2 And Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him.
3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the edge of the desert, by the highway. And David was staying in the wilderness. And he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
4 And David sent out spies and knew that Saul had come indeed.
5 And David arose and came to the place where Saul had pitched. And David saw the place where Saul lay. And Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army, and Saul were lying within the barricade. And the people pitched all around him.
6 And David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to the camp to Saul? And Abishai said, I will go down with you.
7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night. And behold, Saul lay sleeping in the tent, and his spear stuck in the ground at his head. But Abner and the people lay around him.
8 And Abishai said to David, God has shut up your enemy into your hand this day. And please let me strike him with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not repeat it to him.
9 And David said to Abishai, Do not destroy him. For who can stretch forth his hand against Jehovah's anointed and be guiltless?
10 And David said, As Jehovah lives, except Jehovah strike him, or his day shall come, and he dies, or he goes down to battle and is consumed,
11 far be it from me by Jehovah, from putting forth my hand against Jehovah's anointed. And now, please take the spear at his head and the cruse of water, and we will go.
12 And David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's head. And they went away, and no one saw, and no one knew; and no one was awake; for all of them were sleeping, because a deep sleep from Jehovah had fallen on them.
13 And David went over to the other side and stood on the top of a hill afar off, a great space between them.
14 And David cried to the people and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Do you not answer, Abner? And Abner answered and said, Who are you that cries to the king?
15 And David said to Abner, Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? But why have you not watched over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king.
16 This thing that you have done is not good. As Jehovah lives, because you have not watched over your master, Jehovah's anointed, you also are worthy to die. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his head.
17 And Saul knew David's voice and said, Is this your voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.
18 And he said, Why does my lord pursue after his servant this way? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?
19 And now, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If Jehovah has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering. But if it is the sons of men, they are cursed before Jehovah. For they have driven me out today from joining myself with the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.
20 And now, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of Jehovah. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.
21 And Saul said, I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will never do you harm any more, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have greatly erred.
22 And David answered and said, Behold the king's spear! And let one of the young men come over and get it.
23 May Jehovah give to each his righteousness and his faithfulness. For Jehovah delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against Jehovah's anointed.
24 And behold, as your life was precious in my eyes this day, so let my life be precious in the eyes of Jehovah, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.
25 And Saul said to David, Blessed are you, my son David. You shall both do great things and also shall still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

2 Then Saul H7586 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went down H3381 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the wilderness H4057 of Ziph H2128 , having three H7969 thousand H505 MMP chosen H977 men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 with H854 him , to seek H1245 David H1732 MMS in the wilderness H4057 of Ziph H2128 .
3 And Saul H7586 pitched H2583 in the hill H1389 of Hachilah H2444 , which H834 RPRO is before H5921 PREP Jeshimon H3452 , by H5921 PREP the way H1870 D-NMS . But David H1732 abode H3427 VQPMS in the wilderness H4057 , and he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ Saul H7586 came H935 after H310 PREP-3MS him into the wilderness H4057 .
4 David H1732 MMS therefore sent out H7971 W-VQY3MS spies H7270 , and understood H3045 W-VQY3MS that H3588 CONJ Saul H7586 was come in very deed H3559 .
5 And David H1732 MMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO Saul H7586 had pitched H2583 : and David H1732 MMS beheld H7200 W-VIY3MS the place H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO Saul H7586 lay H7901 , and Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 , the captain H8269 of his host H6635 : and Saul H7586 lay H7901 in the trench H4570 , and the people H5971 pitched H2583 round about H5439 him .
6 Then answered H6030 W-VQY3MS David H1732 MMS and said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Ahimelech H288 the Hittite H2850 , and to H413 PREP Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 , brother H251 CMS to Joab H3097 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO will go down H3381 with H854 PREP-1MS me to H413 PREP Saul H7586 to H413 PREP the camp H4264 ? And Abishai H52 said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS will go down H3381 with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
7 So David H1732 and Abishai H52 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the people H5971 by night H3915 GMS : and , behold H2009 IJEC , Saul H7586 lay H7901 sleeping H3463 within the trench H4570 , and his spear H2595 stuck H4600 in the ground H776 BD-GFS at his bolster H4763 : but Abner H74 and the people H5971 lay H7901 round about H5439 him .
8 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Abishai H52 to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , God H430 EDP hath delivered H5462 thine enemy H341 into thine hand H3027 B-CFS-2MS this day H3117 D-AMS : now H6258 W-ADV therefore let me smite H5221 him , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , with the spear H2595 even to the earth H776 at once H259 OFS , and I will not H3808 W-NPAR smite him the second time H8138 .
9 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Abishai H52 , Destroy H7843 him not H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ who H4310 IPRO can stretch forth H7971 VQQ3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS against the LORD H3068 EDS \'s anointed H4899 , and be guiltless H5352 ?
10 David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS furthermore H518 PART , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , the LORD H3068 EDS shall smite H5062 him ; or H176 CONJ his day H3117 CMS-3MS shall come H935 VQY3MS to die H4191 ; or H176 CONJ he shall descend H3381 into battle H4421 , and perish H5595 .
11 The LORD H3068 NAME-4MS forbid H2486 IJEC-3FS that I should stretch forth mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS against the LORD H3068 EDS \'s anointed H4899 : but , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , take H3947 VQI2MS thou now H6258 W-ADV the spear H2595 that H834 RPRO is at his bolster H4763 , and the cruse H6835 of water H4325 D-CMS , and let us go H1980 .
12 So David H1732 MMS took H3947 W-VQY3MS the spear H2595 and the cruse H6835 of water H4325 D-CMS from Saul H7586 \'s bolster H4763 ; and they got them away H1980 W-VQY3MP , and no H369 W-NPAR man saw H7200 VQPMS it , nor H369 W-NPAR knew H3045 VQPMS it , neither H369 W-NPAR awaked H6974 : for H3588 CONJ they were all H3605 asleep H3463 ; because H3588 CONJ a deep sleep H8639 from the LORD H3068 EDS was fallen H5307 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
13 Then David H1732 MMS went over H5674 W-VQY3MS to the other side H5676 , and stood H5975 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of a hill H2022 afar off H7350 ; a great H7227 AMS space H4725 D-NMS being between H996 them :
14 And David H1732 cried H7121 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the people H5971 , and to H413 PREP Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Answerest H6030 thou not H3808 D-NPAR , Abner H74 ? Then Abner H74 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO art thou H859 PPRO-2MS that criest H7121 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 ?
15 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Abner H74 , Art not H3808 ADV thou H859 PPRO-2MS a valiant man H376 NMS ? and who H4310 W-IPRO is like to thee H3644 in Israel H3478 ? wherefore H4100 WL-IGAT then hast thou not H3808 NADV kept H8104 thy lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS ? for H3588 CONJ there came H935 one H259 of the people H5971 in to destroy H7843 the king H4428 D-NMS thy lord H113 .
16 This H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS is not H3808 NADV good H2896 AMS that H834 RPRO thou hast done H6213 VQQ2MS . As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , ye H859 PPRO-2MS are worthy H1121 CMP to die H4194 NMS , because H834 RPRO ye have not H3808 ADV kept H8104 your master H113 , the LORD H3068 EDS \'s anointed H4899 . And now H6258 W-ADV see H7200 VQI2MS where H335 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s spear H2595 NFS is , and the cruse H6835 of water H4325 D-CMS that H834 RPRO was at his bolster H4763 .
17 And Saul H7586 knew H5234 David H1732 MMS \'s voice H6963 CMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is this H2088 DPRO thy voice H6963 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS David H1732 ? And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is my voice H6963 NMS-1MS , my lord H113 , O king H4428 .
18 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO doth my lord H113 thus H2088 PMS pursue H7291 after H310 PREP his servant H5650 ? for H3588 CONJ what H4100 L-IPRO have I done H6213 VQQ1MS ? or what H4100 L-IPRO evil H7451 AFS is in mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS ?
19 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS hear H8085 the words H1697 CMP of his servant H5650 . If H518 PART the LORD H3068 EDS have stirred thee up H5496 against me , let him accept H7306 an offering H4503 NFS : but if H518 PART they be the children H1121 of men H120 D-NMS , cursed H779 be they H1992 PPRO-3MP before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS ; for H3588 CONJ they have driven me out H1644 this day H3117 D-AMS from abiding H5596 in the inheritance H5159 of the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Go H1980 VQI2MS , serve H5647 other H312 gods H430 EDP .
20 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , let not H408 NPAR my blood H1818 fall H5307 VQY3MS to the earth H776 NFS-3FS before H5048 M-PREP the face H6440 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 is come out H3318 VQQ3MS to seek H1245 a flea H6550 , as when H834 K-RPRO one H259 MMS doth hunt H7291 a partridge H7124 in the mountains H2022 .
21 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Saul H7586 , I have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS : return H7725 VQFC , my son H1121 David H1732 : for H3588 CONJ I will no H3808 ADV more H5750 ADV do thee harm H7489 , because H834 RPRO my soul H5315 CFS-1MS was precious H3365 in thine eyes H5869 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS : behold H2009 IJEC , I have played the fool H5528 , and have erred H7686 exceedingly H7235 VHFA .
22 And David H1732 MMS answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC the king H4428 D-NMS \'s spear H2595 ! and let one H259 MMS of the young men H5288 come over H5674 W-VQY3MS and fetch H3947 it .
23 The LORD H3068 NAME-4MS render H7725 VHY3MS to every man H376 LD-NMS his righteousness H6666 and his faithfulness H530 : for H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 thee into my hand H3027 today H3117 D-AMS , but I would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR stretch forth H7971 mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS against the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS \'s anointed H4899 .
24 And , behold H2009 IJEC , as H834 K-RPRO thy life H5315 was much set H1431 by this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS in mine eyes H5869 , so H3651 ADV let my life H5315 CFS-1MS be much set H1431 by in the eyes H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and let him deliver H5337 me out of all H3605 M-CMS tribulation H6869 NFS .
25 Then Saul H7586 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be thou H859 PPRO-2MS , my son H1121 NMS-1MS David H1732 : thou shalt both H1571 CONJ do great H6213 things , and also H1571 W-CONJ shalt still prevail H3201 . So David H1732 MMS went H1980 W-VQY3MS on his way H1870 , and Saul H7586 returned H7725 VQQ3MS to his place H4725 .
