1. When you go to war against your enemies and you see horses and chariots and an army that is bigger than yours, don't be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, will be with you.
1. When H3588 thou goest out H3318 to battle H4421 against H5921 thine enemies H341 , and seest H7200 horses H5483 , and chariots H7393 , and a people H5971 more H7227 than H4480 thou , be not afraid H3372 H3808 of H4480 them: for H3588 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 is with H5973 thee , which brought thee up H5927 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 .
2. The priest must come and speak to the army before you go into battle.
2. And it shall be H1961 , when ye are come nigh H7126 unto H413 the battle H4421 , that the priest H3548 shall approach H5066 and speak H1696 unto H413 the people H5971 ,
3. He will say, "Listen, Israel! Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Don't lose your courage or be afraid. Don't panic or be frightened,
3. And shall say H559 unto H413 them, Hear H8085 , O Israel H3478 , ye H859 approach H7131 this day H3117 unto battle H4421 against H5921 your enemies H341 : let not H408 your hearts H3824 faint H7401 , fear H3372 not H408 , and do not H408 tremble H2648 , neither H408 be ye terrified H6206 because of H4480 H6440 them;
4. because the Lord your God goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies and to save you."
4. For H3588 the LORD H3068 your God H430 is he that goeth H1980 with H5973 you , to fight H3898 for you against H5973 your enemies H341 , to save H3467 you.
5. The officers should say to the army, "Has anyone built a new house but not given it to God? He may go home, because he might die in battle and someone else would get to give his house to God.
5. And the officers H7860 shall speak H1696 unto H413 the people H5971 , saying H559 , What H4310 man H376 is there that H834 hath built H1129 a new H2319 house H1004 , and hath not H3808 dedicated H2596 it? let him go H1980 and return H7725 to his house H1004 , lest H6435 he die H4191 in the battle H4421 , and another H312 man H376 dedicate H2596 it.
6. Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? He may go home, because he might die in battle and someone else would enjoy his vineyard.
6. And what H4310 man H376 is he that H834 hath planted H5193 a vineyard H3754 , and hath not H3808 yet eaten H2490 of it? let him also go H1980 and return H7725 unto his house H1004 , lest H6435 he die H4191 in the battle H4421 , and another H312 man H376 eat H2490 of it.
7. Is any man engaged to a woman and not yet married to her? He may go home, because he might die in battle and someone else would marry her."
7. And what H4310 man H376 is there that H834 hath betrothed H781 a wife H802 , and hath not H3808 taken H3947 her? let him go H1980 and return H7725 unto his house H1004 , lest H6435 he die H4191 in the battle H4421 , and another H312 man H376 take H3947 her.
8. Then the officers should also say, "Is anyone here afraid? Has anyone lost his courage? He may go home so that he will not cause others to lose their courage, too."
8. And the officers H7860 shall speak H1696 further H3254 unto H413 the people H5971 , and they shall say H559 , What H4310 man H376 is there that is fearful H3373 and fainthearted H7390 H3824 ? let him go H1980 and return H7725 unto his house H1004 , lest H3808 H853 his brethren H251 's heart H3824 faint H4549 as well as his heart H3824 .
9. When the officers finish speaking to the army, they should appoint commanders to lead it.
9. And it shall be H1961 , when the officers H7860 have made an end H3615 of speaking H1696 unto H413 the people H5971 , that they shall make H6485 captains H8269 of the armies H6635 to lead H7218 the people H5971 .
10. When you march up to attack a city, first make them an offer of peace.
10. When H3588 thou comest nigh H7126 unto H413 a city H5892 to fight H3898 against H5921 it , then proclaim H7121 peace H7965 unto H413 it.
11. If they accept your offer and open their gates to you, all the people of that city will become your slaves and work for you.
11. And it shall be H1961 , if H518 it make thee answer H6030 of peace H7965 , and open H6605 unto thee , then it shall be H1961 , that all H3605 the people H5971 that is found H4672 therein shall be H1961 tributaries H4522 unto thee , and they shall serve H5647 thee.
12. But if they do not make peace with you and fight you in battle, you should surround that city.
12. And if H518 it will make no peace H7999 H3808 with H5973 thee , but will make H6213 war H4421 against H5973 thee , then thou shalt besiege H6696 H5921 it:
13. The Lord your God will give it to you. Then kill all the men with your swords,
13. And when the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath delivered H5414 it into thine hands H3027 , thou shalt smite H5221 H853 every H3605 male H2138 thereof with the edge H6310 of the sword H2719 :
14. and you may take everything else in the city for yourselves. Take the women, children, and animals, and you may use these things the Lord your God gives you from your enemies.
14. But H7535 the women H802 , and the little ones H2945 , and the cattle H929 , and all H3605 that H834 is H1961 in the city H5892 , even all H3605 the spoil H7998 thereof , shalt thou take H962 unto thyself ; and thou shalt eat H398 H853 the spoil H7998 of thine enemies H341 , which H834 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath given H5414 thee.
15. Do this to all the cities that are far away, that do not belong to the nations nearby.
15. Thus H3651 shalt thou do H6213 unto all H3605 the cities H5892 which are very H3966 far off H7350 from H4480 thee, which H834 are not H3808 of the cities H4480 H5892 of these H428 nations H1471 .
16. But leave nothing alive in the cities of the land the Lord your God is giving you.
16. But H7535 of the cities H4480 H5892 of these H428 people H5971 , which H834 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 doth give H5414 thee for an inheritance H5159 , thou shalt save alive H2421 nothing H3808 H3605 that breatheth H5397 :
17. Completely destroy these people: the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded.
17. But H3588 thou shalt utterly destroy H2763 H2763 them; namely , the Hittites H2850 , and the Amorites H567 , the Canaanites H3669 , and the Perizzites H6522 , the Hivites H2340 , and the Jebusites H2983 ; as H834 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath commanded H6680 thee:
18. Otherwise, they will teach you what they do for their gods, and if you do these hateful things, you will sin against the Lord your God.
18. That H4616 H834 they teach H3925 you not H3808 to do H6213 after all H3605 their abominations H8441 , which H834 they have done H6213 unto their gods H430 ; so should ye sin H2398 against the LORD H3068 your God H430 .
19. If you surround and attack a city for a long time, trying to capture it, do not destroy its trees with an ax. You can eat the fruit from the trees, but do not cut them down. These trees are not the enemy, so don't make war against them.
19. When H3588 thou shalt besiege H6696 H413 a city H5892 a long H7227 time H3117 , in making war H3898 against H5921 it to take H8610 it , thou shalt not H3808 destroy H7843 H853 the trees H6086 thereof by forcing H5080 an axe H1631 against H5921 them: for H3588 thou mayest eat H398 of H4480 them , and thou shalt not H3808 cut them down H3772 H853 ( for H3588 the tree H6086 of the field H7704 is man H120 's life ) to employ H935 H4480 H6440 them in the siege H4692 :
20. But you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build devices to attack the city walls, until the city is captured.
20. Only H7535 the trees H6086 which H834 thou knowest H3045 that H3588 they H1931 be not H3808 trees H6086 for meat H3978 , thou shalt destroy H7843 and cut them down H3772 ; and thou shalt build H1129 bulwarks H4692 against H5921 the city H5892 that H834 H1931 maketh H6213 war H4421 with H5973 thee, until H5704 it be subdued H3381 .
