1. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
1. And the LORD H3068 spoke H1696 unto H413 Moses H4872 and to H413 Aaron H175 , saying H559 unto H413 them,
2. "Tell the Israelites this: 'These are the land animals you may eat:
2. Speak H1696 unto H413 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , saying H559 , These H2063 are the beasts H2416 which H834 ye shall eat H398 among all H4480 H3605 the beasts H929 that H834 are on H5921 the earth H776 .
3. You may eat any animal that has split hoofs completely divided and that chews the cud.
3. Whatsoever H3605 parteth H6536 the hoof H6541 , and is cloven H8156 H8157 H6541 -footed, and cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , among the beasts H929 , that shall ye eat H398 .
4. "'Some animals only chew the cud or only have split hoofs, and you must not eat them. The camel chews the cud but does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you.
4. Nevertheless H389 H853 these H2088 shall ye not H3808 eat H398 of them that chew H4480 H5927 the cud H1625 , or of them that divide H4480 H6536 the hoof H6541 : as H853 the camel H1581 , because H3588 he H1931 cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H369 the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 is unclean H2931 unto you.
5. The rock badger chews the cud but does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you.
5. And the coney H8227 , because H3588 he H1931 cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H3808 the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 is unclean H2931 unto you.
6. The rabbit chews the cud but does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you.
6. And the hare H768 , because H3588 he H1931 cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H3808 the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 is unclean H2931 unto you.
7. Now the pig has a split hoof that is completely divided, but it does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
7. And the swine H2386 , though H3588 he H1931 divide H6536 the hoof H6541 , and be cloven H8156 H8157 H6541 -footed , yet he H1931 cheweth H1641 not H3808 the cud H1625 ; he H1931 is unclean H2931 to you.
8. You must not eat the meat from these animals or even touch their dead bodies; they are unclean for you.
8. Of their flesh H4480 H1320 shall ye not H3808 eat H398 , and their carcass H5038 shall ye not H3808 touch H5060 ; they H1992 are unclean H2931 to you.
9. "'Of the animals that live in the sea or in a river, if the animal has fins and scales, you may eat it.
9. H853 These H2088 shall ye eat H398 of all H4480 H3605 that H834 are in the waters H4325 : whatsoever H3605 H834 hath fins H5579 and scales H7193 in the waters H4325 , in the seas H3220 , and in the rivers H5158 , them shall ye eat H398 .
10. But whatever lives in the sea or in a river and does not have fins and scales -- including the things that fill the water and all other things that live in it -- you should hate.
10. And all H3605 that H834 have not H369 fins H5579 and scales H7193 in the seas H3220 , and in the rivers H5158 , of all H4480 H3605 that move H8318 in the waters H4325 , and of any H4480 H3605 living H2416 thing H5315 which H834 is in the waters H4325 , they H1992 shall be an abomination H8263 unto you:
11. You must not eat any meat from them or even touch their dead bodies, because you should hate them.
11. They shall be H1961 even an abomination H8263 unto you ; ye shall not H3808 eat H398 of their flesh H4480 H1320 , but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination H8262 H853 H5038 .
12. You must hate any animal in the water that does not have fins and scales.
12. Whatsoever H3605 H834 hath no H369 fins H5579 nor scales H7193 in the waters H4325 , that H1931 shall be an abomination H8263 unto you.
13. "'Also, these are the birds you are to hate. They are hateful and should not be eaten. You must not eat eagles, vultures, black vultures,
13. And these H428 are they which ye shall have in abomination H8262 among H4480 the fowls H5775 ; they shall not H3808 be eaten H398 , they H1992 are an abomination H8263 : H853 the eagle H5404 , and the ossifrage H6538 , and the osprey H5822 ,
14. kites, any kind of falcon,
14. And the vulture H1676 , and the kite H344 after his kind H4327 ;
15. any kind of raven,
15. H853 Every H3605 raven H6158 after his kind H4327 ;
16. horned owls, screech owls, sea gulls, any kind of hawk,
16. And the owl H1323 H3284 , and the night hawk H8464 , and the cuckoo H7828 , and the hawk H5322 after his kind H4327 ,
17. little owls, cormorants, great owls,
17. And the little owl H3563 , and the cormorant H7994 , and the great owl H3244 ,
18. white owls, desert owls, ospreys,
18. And the swan H8580 , and the pelican H6893 , and the gier H7360 -eagle,
19. storks, any kind of heron, hoopoes, or bats.
19. And the stork H2624 , the heron H601 after her kind H4327 , and the lapwing H1744 , and the bat H5847 .
20. "'Don't eat insects that have wings and walk on all four feet; they also are to be hated.
20. All H3605 fowls H5775 that creep H8318 , going H1980 upon H5921 all four H702 , shall be an abomination H8263 unto you.
21. "'But you may eat certain insects that have wings and walk on four feet. You may eat those that have legs with joints above their feet so they can jump.
21. Yet H389 H853 these H2088 may ye eat H398 of every H4480 H3605 flying H5775 creeping thing H8318 that goeth H1980 upon H5921 all four H702 , which H834 have legs H3767 above H4480 H4605 their feet H7272 , to leap H5425 withal H2004 upon H5921 the earth H776 ;
22. These are the insects you may eat: all kinds of locusts, winged locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers.
22. Even H853 these H428 of H4480 them ye may eat H398 ; H853 the locust H697 after his kind H4327 , and the bald locust H5556 after his kind H4327 , and the beetle H2728 after his kind H4327 , and the grasshopper H2284 after his kind H4327 .
23. But all other insects that have wings and walk on four feet you are to hate.
23. But all H3605 other flying H5775 creeping things H8318 , which H834 have four H702 feet H7272 , shall be an abomination H8263 unto you.
24. Those insects will make you unclean, and anyone who touches the dead body of one of these insects will become unclean until evening.
24. And for these H428 ye shall be unclean H2930 : whosoever H3605 toucheth H5060 the carcass H5038 of them shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
25. Anyone who picks up one of these dead insects must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
25. And whosoever H3605 beareth H5375 aught of the carcass H4480 H5038 of them shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
26. "'Some animals have split hoofs, but the hoofs are not completely divided; others do not chew the cud. They are unclean for you, and anyone who touches the dead body of one of these animals will become unclean.
26. The carcasses of every H3605 beast H929 which H834 divideth H6536 the hoof H6541 , and is not H369 cloven H8156 H8157 -footed, nor H369 cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , are unclean H2931 unto you : every one H3605 that toucheth H5060 them shall be unclean H2930 .
27. Of all the animals that walk on four feet, the animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Anyone who touches the dead body of one of these animals will become unclean until evening.
27. And whatsoever H3605 goeth H1980 upon H5921 his paws H3709 , among all manner H3605 of beasts H2416 that go H1980 on H5921 all four H702 , those H1992 are unclean H2931 unto you: whoso H3605 toucheth H5060 their carcass H5038 shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
28. Anyone who picks up their dead bodies must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; these animals are unclean for you.
28. And he that beareth H5375 H853 the carcass H5038 of them shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 : they H1992 are unclean H2931 unto you.
29. "'These crawling animals are unclean for you: moles, rats, all kinds of great lizards,
29. These H2088 also shall be unclean H2931 unto you among the creeping things H8318 that creep H8317 upon H5921 the earth H776 ; the weasel H2467 , and the mouse H5909 , and the tortoise H6632 after his kind H4327 ,
30. geckos, crocodiles, lizards, sand reptiles, and chameleons.
30. And the ferret H604 , and the chameleon H3581 , and the lizard H3911 , and the snail H2546 , and the mole H8580 .
31. These crawling animals are unclean for you; anyone who touches their dead bodies will be unclean until evening.
31. These H428 are unclean H2931 to you among all H3605 that creep H8318 : whosoever H3605 doth touch H5060 them , when they be dead H4194 , shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
32. "'If an unclean animal dies and falls on something, that item will also become unclean. This includes anything made from wood, cloth, leather, or rough cloth, regardless of its use. Whatever the animal falls on must be washed with water and be unclean until evening; then it will become clean again.
32. And upon H5921 whatsoever H3605 H834 any of H4480 them , when they are dead H4194 , doth fall H5307 , it shall be unclean H2930 ; whether it be any H4480 H3605 vessel H3627 of wood H6086 , or H176 raiment H899 , or H176 skin H5785 , or H176 sack H8242 , whatsoever H3605 vessel H3627 it be , wherein H834 any work H4399 is done H6213 , it must be put H935 into water H4325 , and it shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 ; so it shall be cleansed H2891 .
33. If the dead, unclean animal falls into a clay bowl, anything in the bowl will become unclean, and you must break the bowl.
33. And every H3605 earthen H2789 vessel H3627 , whereinto H834 H413 H8432 any of H4480 them falleth H5307 , whatsoever H3605 H834 is in H8432 it shall be unclean H2930 ; and ye shall break H7665 it.
34. If water from the unclean clay bowl gets on any food, that food will become unclean.
34. Of all H4480 H3605 meat H400 which H834 may be eaten H398 , that on H5921 which H834 such water H4325 cometh H935 shall be unclean H2930 : and all H3605 drink H4945 that H834 may be drunk H8354 in every H3605 such vessel H3627 shall be unclean H2930 .
35. If any dead, unclean animal falls on something, it becomes unclean. If it is a clay oven or a clay baking pan, it must be broken into pieces. These things will be unclean; they are unclean for you.
35. And every H3605 thing whereupon H834 H5921 any part of their carcass H4480 H5038 falleth H5307 shall be unclean H2930 ; whether it be oven H8574 , or ranges for pots H3600 , they shall be broken down H5422 : for they H1992 are unclean H2931 , and shall be H1961 unclean H2931 unto you.
36. "'A spring or well that collects water will stay clean, but anyone who touches the dead body of any unclean animal will become unclean.
36. Nevertheless H389 a fountain H4599 or pit H953 , wherein there is plenty H4723 of water H4325 , shall be H1961 clean H2889 : but that which toucheth H5060 their carcass H5038 shall be unclean H2930 .
37. If a dead, unclean animal falls on a seed to be planted, that seed is still clean.
37. And if H3588 any part of H4480 their carcass H5038 fall H5307 upon H5921 any H3605 sowing H2221 seed H2233 which H834 is to be sown H2232 , it H1931 shall be clean H2889 .
38. But if you put water on some seeds and a dead, unclean animal falls on them, they are unclean for you.
38. But if H3588 any water H4325 be put H5414 upon H5921 the seed H2233 , and any part of their carcass H4480 H5038 fall H5307 thereon H5921 , it H1931 shall be unclean H2931 unto you.
39. "'Also, if an animal which you use for food dies, anyone who touches its body will be unclean until evening.
39. And if H3588 any beast H929 , of H4480 which H834 ye may eat H402 , die H4191 ; he that toucheth H5060 the carcass H5038 thereof shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
40. Anyone who eats meat from this animal's dead body must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. Anyone who picks up the animal's dead body must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
40. And he that eateth H398 of the carcass H4480 H5038 of it shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 : he also that beareth H5375 H853 the carcass H5038 of it shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 the even H6153 .
41. "'Every animal that crawls on the ground is to be hated; it must not be eaten.
41. And every H3605 creeping thing H8318 that creepeth H8317 upon H5921 the earth H776 shall be an abomination H8263 ; it shall not H3808 be eaten H398 .
42. You must not eat any of the animals that crawl on the ground, including those that crawl on their stomachs, that walk on all four feet, or on many feet. They are to be hated.
42. Whatsoever H3605 goeth H1980 upon H5921 the belly H1512 , and whatsoever H3605 goeth H1980 upon H5921 all four H702 , or whatsoever H3605 hath more H7235 feet H7272 among all H3605 creeping things H8318 that creep H8317 upon H5921 the earth H776 , them ye shall not H3808 eat H398 ; for H3588 they H1992 are an abomination H8263 .
43. Do not make yourself unclean by these animals; you must not become unclean by them.
43. Ye shall not H408 make yourselves abominable H8262 H853 H5315 with any H3605 creeping thing H8318 that creepeth H8317 , neither H3808 shall ye make yourselves unclean H2930 with them , that ye should be defiled H2930 thereby.
44. I am the Lord your God. Keep yourselves holy for me because I am holy. Don't make yourselves unclean with any of these crawling animals.
44. For H3588 I H589 am the LORD H3068 your God H430 : ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves H6942 , and ye shall be H1961 holy H6918 ; for H3588 I H589 am holy H6918 : neither H3808 shall ye defile H2930 H853 yourselves H5315 with any manner H3605 of creeping thing H8318 that creepeth H7430 upon H5921 the earth H776 .
45. I am the Lord who brought you out of Egypt to be your God; you must be holy because I am holy.
45. For H3588 I H589 am the LORD H3068 that bringeth you up H5927 H853 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 , to be H1961 your God H430 : ye shall therefore be H1961 holy H6918 , for H3588 I H589 am holy H6918 .
46. "'These are the teachings about all of the cattle, birds, and other animals on earth, as well as the animals in the sea and those that crawl on the ground.
46. This H2063 is the law H8451 of the beasts H929 , and of the fowl H5775 , and of every H3605 living H2416 creature H5315 that moveth H7430 in the waters H4325 , and of every H3605 creature H5315 that creepeth H8317 upon H5921 the earth H776 :
47. These teachings help people know the difference between unclean animals and clean animals; they help people know which animals may be eaten and which ones must not be eaten.'"
47. To make a difference H914 between H996 the unclean H2931 and the clean H2889 , and between H996 the beast H2416 that may be eaten H398 and the beast H2416 that H834 may not H3808 be eaten H398 .
