3. "Those people who know they have great spiritual needs are happy, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

|
4. Those who are sad now are happy, because God will comfort them.
|

|
5. Those who are humble are happy, because the earth will belong to them.
|
5. Blessed G3107 are the meek G4239 : for G3754 they G846 shall inherit G2816 the G3588 earth G1093 .

6. Those who want to do right more than anything else are happy, because God will fully satisfy them.
|
6. Blessed G3107 are they which do hunger G3983 and G2532 thirst G1372 after righteousness G1343 : for G3754 they G846 shall be filled G5526 .

7. Those who show mercy to others are happy, because God will show mercy to them.
|

|

8. Those who are pure in their thinking are happy, because they will be with God.
|

9. Those who work to bring peace are happy, because God will call them his children.
|

|
|
10. Those who are treated badly for doing good are happy, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
|
10. Blessed G3107 are they which are persecuted G1377 for righteousness' sake G1752 G1343 : for G3754 theirs G846 is G2076 the G3588 kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 .

11. "People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do, you will be happy.
|

12. Rejoice and be glad, because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven. People did the same evil things to the prophets who lived before you.

13. "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its salty taste, it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing, except to be thrown out and walked on.

14. "You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden.
|

15. And people don't hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand so the light shines for all the people in the house.
|
15. Neither G3761 do men light G2545 a candle G3088 , and G2532 put G5087 it G846 under G5259 a bushel G3426 , but G235 on G1909 a candlestick G3087 ; and G2532 it giveth light G2989 unto all G3956 that G3588 are in G1722 the G3588 house G3614 .

16. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven.
|
16. Let your G5216 light G5457 so G3779 shine G2989 before G1715 men G444 , that G3704 they may see G1492 your G5216 good G2570 works G2041 , and G2532 glorify G1392 your G5216 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven G3772 .

17. "Don't think that I have come to destroy the law of Moses or the teaching of the prophets. I have not come to destroy them but to bring about what they said.
|
17. Think G3543 not G3361 that G3754 I am come G2064 to destroy G2647 the G3588 law G3551 , or G2228 the G3588 prophets G4396 : I am not G3756 come G2064 to destroy G2647 , but G235 to fulfill G4137 .

18. I tell you the truth, nothing will disappear from the law until heaven and earth are gone. Not even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will be lost until everything has happened.
|

19. Whoever refuses to obey any command and teaches other people not to obey that command will be the least important in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys the commands and teaches other people to obey them will be great in the kingdom of heaven.

20. I tell you that if you are no more obedient than the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

21. "You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, 'You must not murder anyone. Anyone who murders another will be judged.'

22. But I tell you, if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be judged. If you say bad things to a brother or sister, you will be judged by the council. And if you call someone a fool, you will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23. "So when you offer your gift to God at the altar, and you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,

23. Therefore G3767 if G1437 thou bring G4374 thy G4675 gift G1435 to G1909 the G3588 altar G2379 , and there G2546 rememberest G3415 that G3754 thy G4675 brother G80 hath G2192 aught G5100 against G2596 thee G4675 ;

24. leave your gift there at the altar. Go and make peace with that person, and then come and offer your gift.

25. "If your enemy is taking you to court, become friends quickly, before you go to court. Otherwise, your enemy might turn you over to the judge, and the judge might give you to a guard to put you in jail.

25. Agree G2468 G2132 with thine G4675 adversary G476 quickly G5035 , while G2193 G3755 thou art G1488 in G1722 the G3588 way G3598 with G3326 him G846 ; lest at any time G3379 the G3588 adversary G476 deliver G3860 thee G4571 to the G3588 judge G2923 , and G2532 the G3588 judge G2923 deliver G3860 thee G4571 to the G3588 officer G5257 , and G2532 thou be cast G906 into G1519 prison G5438 .

26. I tell you the truth, you will not leave there until you have paid everything you owe.
|
26. Verily G281 I say G3004 unto thee G4671 , Thou shalt by no means G3364 come out G1831 thence G1564 , till G2193 G302 thou hast paid G591 the G3588 uttermost G2078 farthing G2835 .

27. "You have heard that it was said, 'You must not be guilty of adultery.'
|
27. Ye have heard G191 that G3754 it was said G4483 by them of old time G744 , Thou shalt not G3756 commit adultery G3431 :
|
|
28. But I tell you that if anyone looks at a woman and wants to sin sexually with her, in his mind he has already done that sin with the woman.
|
28. But G1161 I G1473 say G3004 unto you G5213 , That G3754 whosoever G3956 looketh G991 on a woman G1135 to lust G1937 after her G846 hath committed adultery G3431 with her G846 already G2235 in G1722 his G848 heart G2588 .

29. If your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
|
29. 30. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
|
30. And G2532 if G1487 thy G4675 right G1188 hand G5495 offend G4624 thee G4571 , cut it off G1581 G846 , and G2532 cast G906 it from G575 thee G4675 : for G1063 it is profitable G4851 for thee G4671 that G2443 one G1520 of thy G4675 members G3196 should perish G622 , and G2532 not G3361 that thy G4675 whole G3650 body G4983 should be cast G906 into G1519 hell G1067 .

31. "It was also said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written divorce paper.'
|
31. It G1161 hath been said G4483 , Whosoever G3739 G302 shall put away G630 his G848 wife G1135 , let him give G1325 her G846 a writing of divorcement G647 :

|
32. But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife forces her to be guilty of adultery. The only reason for a man to divorce his wife is if she has sexual relations with another man. And anyone who marries that divorced woman is guilty of adultery.
|
32. But G1161 I G1473 say G3004 unto you G5213 , That G3754 whosoever G3739 G302 shall put away G630 his G848 wife G1135 , saving for G3924 the cause G3056 of fornication G4202 , causeth G4160 her G846 to commit adultery G3429 : and G2532 whosoever G3739 G1437 shall marry G1060 her that is divorced G630 committeth adultery G3429 .

33. "You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, 'Don't break your promises, but keep the promises you make to the Lord.'
|
33. Again G3825 , ye have heard G191 that G3754 it hath been said G4483 by them of old time G744 , Thou shalt not G3756 forswear G1964 thyself, but G1161 shalt perform G591 unto the G3588 Lord G2962 thine G4675 oaths G3727 :

|
34. But I tell you, never swear an oath. Don't swear an oath using the name of heaven, because heaven is God's throne.
|
34. But G1161 I G1473 say G3004 unto you G5213 , Swear G3660 not G3361 at all G3654 ; neither G3383 by G1722 heaven G3772 ; for G3754 it is G2076 God G2316 's throne G2362 :
|
|
35. Don't swear an oath using the name of the earth, because the earth belongs to God. Don't swear an oath using the name of Jerusalem, because that is the city of the great King.
|
35. Nor G3383 by G1722 the G3588 earth G1093 ; for G3754 it is G2076 his G846 footstool G5286 G4228 : neither G3383 by G1519 Jerusalem G2414 ; for G3754 it is G2076 the city G4172 of the G3588 great G3173 King G935 .
|
|
36. Don't even swear by your own head, because you cannot make one hair on your head become white or black.
|
36. Neither G3383 shalt thou swear G3660 by G1722 thy G4675 head G2776 , because G3754 thou canst G1410 not G3756 make G4160 one G3391 hair G2359 white G3022 or G2228 black G3189 .
|
|
37. Say only yes if you mean yes, and no if you mean no. If you say more than yes or no, it is from the Evil One.
|
37. But G1161 let your G5216 communication G3056 be G2077 , Yea G3483 , yea G3483 ; Nay G3756 , nay G3756 : for G1161 whatsoever is more G4053 than these G5130 cometh G2076 of G1537 evil G4190 .

|
38. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'
|
38. Ye have heard G191 that G3754 it hath been said G4483 , An eye G3788 for G473 an eye G3788 , and G2532 a tooth G3599 for G473 a tooth G3599 :
|
|
39. But I tell you, don't stand up against an evil person. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other cheek also.
|

40. If someone wants to sue you in court and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
|
40. And G2532 if any man will G2309 sue thee at the law G2919 G4671 , and G2532 take away G2983 thy G4675 coat G5509 , let him G846 have G863 thy cloak G2440 also G2532 .
|
|
41. If someone forces you to go with him one mile, go with him two miles.
|
41. And G2532 whosoever G3748 shall compel thee to go G29 G4571 a G1520 mile G3400 , go G5217 with G3326 him G846 twain G1417 .
|
|
42. If a person asks you for something, give it to him. Don't refuse to give to someone who wants to borrow from you.
|
42. Give G1325 to him that asketh G154 thee G4571 , and G2532 from him that would G2309 borrow G1155 of G575 thee G4675 turn not thou away G654 G3361 .
|
|
43. "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighborn and hate your enemies.'
|
43. Ye have heard G191 that G3754 it hath been said G4483 , Thou shalt love G25 thy G4675 neighbor G4139 , and G2532 hate G3404 thine G4675 enemy G2190 .
|
|
44. But I say to you, love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you.
|
44. 45. If you do this, you will be true children of your Father in heaven. He causes the sun to rise on good people and on evil people, and he sends rain to those who do right and to those who do wrong.

45. 46. If you love only the people who love you, you will get no reward. Even the tax collectors do that.
|

47. And if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than other people. Even those who don't know God are nice to their friends.
|
47. And G2532 if G1437 ye salute G782 your G5216 brethren G80 only G3440 , what G5101 do G4160 ye more G4053 than others ? do G4160 not G3780 even G2532 the G3588 publicans G5057 so G3779 ?

48. So you must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
