1 शाऊल तीस वर्ष का हो कर राज्य करने लगा, और उसने इस्राएलियों पर दो वर्ष तक राज्य किया।
2 फिर शाऊल ने इस्राएलियों में से तीन हजार पुरूषों को अपने लिये चुन लिया; और उन में से दो हजार शाऊल के साथ मिकमाश में और बेतेल के पहाड़ पर रहे, और एक हजार योनातान के साथ बिन्यामीन के गिबा में रहे; और दूसरे सब लोगों को उसने अपने अपने डेरे में जाने को विदा किया।
3 तब योनातान ने पलिश्तियों की उस चौकी को जो गिबा में थी मार लिया; और इसका समाचार पलिश्तियों के कानों में पड़ा। तब शाऊल ने सारे देश में नरसिंगा फुंकवाकर यह कहला भेजा, कि इब्री लोग सुनें।
4 और सब इस्राएलियों ने यह समाचार सुना कि शाऊल ने पलिश्तियों की चौकी को मारा है, और यह भी कि पलिश्ती इस्राएल से घृणा करने लगे हैं। तब लोग शाऊल के पीछे चलकर गिलगाल में इकट्ठे हो गए॥
5 और पलिश्ती इस्राएल से युद्ध करने के लिये इकट्ठे हो गए, अर्थात तीस हजार रथ, और छ: हजार सवार, और समुद्र के तीर की बालू के किनकों के समान बहुत से लोग इकट्ठे हुए; और बेतावेन के पूर्व की ओर जा कर मिकमाश में छावनी डाली।
6 जब इस्राएली पुरूषों ने देखा कि हम सकेती में पड़े हैं (और सचमुच लोग संकट में पड़े थे), तब वे लोग गुफाओं, झाड़ियों, चट्टानों, गढिय़ों, और गढ़हों में जा छिपे।
7 और कितने इब्री यरदन पार हो कर गाद और गिलाद के देशों में चले गए; परन्तु शाऊल गिलगाल ही में रहा, और सब लोग थरथराते हुए उसके पीछे हो लिए॥
8 वह शमूएल के ठहराए हुए समय, अर्थात सात दिन तक बाट जोहता रहा; परन्तु शमूएल गिलगाल में न आया, और लोग उसके पास से इधर उधर होने लगे।
9 तब शाऊल ने कहा, होमबलि और मेलबलि मेरे पास लाओ। तब उसने होमबलि को चढ़ाया।
10 ज्योंही वह होमबलि को चढ़ा चुका, तो क्या देखता है कि शमूएल आ पहुंचा; और शाऊल उस से मिलने और नमस्कार करने को निकला।
11 शमूएल ने पूछा, तू ने क्या किया? शाऊल ने कहा, जब मैं ने देखा कि लोग मेरे पास से इधर उधर हो चले हैं, और तू ठहराए हुए दिनों के भीतर नहीं आया, और पलिश्ती मिकपाश में इकट्ठे हुए हैं,
12 तब मैं ने सोचा कि पलिश्ती गिलगाल में मुझ पर अभी आ पड़ेंगे, और मैं ने यहोवा से बिनती भी नहीं की है; सो मैं ने अपनी इच्छा न रहते भी होमबलि चढ़ाया।
13 शमूएल ने शाऊल से कहा, तू ने मूर्खता का काम किया है; तू ने अपने परमेश्वर यहोवा की आज्ञा को नहीं माना; नहीं तो यहोवा तेरा राज्य इस्राएलियों के ऊपर सदा स्थिर रखता।
14 परन्तु अब तेरा राज्य बना न रहेगा; यहोवा ने अपने लिये एक ऐसे पुरूष को ढूंढ़ लिया है जो उसके मन के अनुसार है; और यहोवा ने उसी को अपनी प्रजा पर प्रधान होने को ठहराया है, क्योंकि तू ने यहोवा की आज्ञा को नहीं माना॥
15 तब शमूएल चल निकला, और गिलगाल से बिन्यामीन के गिबा को गया। और शाऊल ने अपने साथ के लोगों को गिनकर कोई छ: सौ पाए।
16 और शाऊल और उसका पुत्र योनातान और जो लोग उनके साथ थे वे बिन्यामीन के गिबा में रहे; और पलिश्ती मिकमाश में डेरे डाले पड़े रहे।
17 और पलिश्तियों की छावनी से नाश करने वाले तीन दल बान्धकर निकल; एक दल ने शूआल नाम देश की ओर फिर के ओप्रा का मार्ग लिया,
18 एक और दल ने मुड़कर बेथोरोन का मार्ग लिया, और एक और दल ने मुड़कर उस देश का मार्ग लिया जो सबोईम नाम तराई की ओर जंगल की तरफ है॥
19 और इस्राएल के पूरे देश में लोहार कहीं नहीं मिलता था, क्योंकि पलिश्तियों ने कहा था, कि इब्री तलवार वा भाला बनाने न पांए;
20 इसलिये सब इस्राएली अपने अपने हल की फली, और भाले, और कुल्हाड़ी, और हंसुआ तेज करने के लिये पलिश्तियों के पास जाते थे;
21 परन्तु उनके हंसुओं, फालों, खेती के त्रिशूलों, और कुल्हाडिय़ों की धारें, और पैनों की नोकें ठीक करने के लिये वे रेती रखते थे।
22 सो युद्ध के दिन शाऊल और योनातान के साथियों में से किसी के पास न तो तलवार थी और न भाला, वे केवल शाऊल और उसके पुत्र योनातान के पास रहे।
23 और पलिश्तियों की चौकी के सिपाही निकलकर मिकमाश की घाटी को गए॥

4 And all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 heard H8085 VQQ3MP say H559 L-VQFC that Saul H7586 had smitten H5221 a garrison H5333 of the Philistines H6430 TMS , and that Israel H3478 also H1571 W-CONJ was had in abomination H887 with the Philistines H6430 . 10 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that as soon as he had made an end H3615 of offering H5927 the burnt offering H5930 , behold H2009 IJEC , Samuel H8050 came H935 VQPMS ; and Saul H7586 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to meet H7125 him , that he might salute H1288 him .
11 And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO hast thou done H6213 VQQ2MS ? 13 And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Saul H7586 , Thou hast done foolishly H5528 : thou hast not H3808 NADV kept H8104 the commandment H4687 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , which H834 RPRO he commanded H6680 thee : for H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV would the LORD H3068 EDS have established H3559 thy kingdom H4467 upon H413 PREP Israel H3478 forever H5704 PREP .
14 But now H6258 W-ADV thy kingdom H4467 shall not H3808 NADV continue H6965 VQY3FS : the LORD H3068 EDS hath sought H1245 him a man H376 NMS after his own heart H3824 , and the LORD H3068 EDS hath commanded H6680 him to be captain H5057 over H5921 PREP his people H5971 , because H3588 CONJ thou hast not H3808 NADV kept H8104 that which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS commanded H6680 thee .
15 And Samuel H8050 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and got him up H5927 W-VHY3MS from H4480 PREP Gilgal H1537 unto Gibeah H1390 of Benjamin H1144 . And Saul H7586 numbered H6485 the people H5971 that were present H4672 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , about six H8337 hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS .
16 And Saul H7586 , and Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 CMS-3MS , and the people H5971 that were present H4672 with H5973 PREP-3MP them , abode H3427 in Gibeah H1387 of Benjamin H1144 : but the Philistines H6430 encamped H2583 in Michmash H4363 .
17 And the spoilers H7843 came out H3318 W-VQY3MS of the camp H4264 of the Philistines H6430 in three H7969 NFS companies H7218 NMP : one H259 MMS company H7218 turned H6437 VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the way H1870 NMS that leadeth to Ophrah H6084 , unto H413 PREP the land H776 GFS of Shual H7777 :

19 Now there was no H3808 NADV blacksmith H2796 found H4672 throughout all H3605 the land H776 GFS of Israel H3478 : for H3588 CONJ the Philistines H6430 said H559 , Lest H6435 CONJ the Hebrews H5680 make H6213 them swords H2719 GFS or H176 CONJ spears H2595 :
20 But all H3605 CMS the Israelites H3478 went down H3381 to the Philistines H6430 , to sharpen H3913 every man H376 NMS his share H4282 , and his colter H855 , and his axe H7134 , and his mattock H4281 .
21 Yet they had H1961 a file H6477 for the mattocks H4281 , and for the colters H855 , and for the forks H7969 , and for the axes H7134 , and to sharpen H5324 the goads H1861 .
22 So it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in the day H3117 B-NMS of battle H4421 , that there was neither H3808 W-NPAR sword H2719 GFS nor spear H2595 found H4672 VNQ3MS in the hand H3027 B-CFS of any H3605 NMS of the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP Saul H7586 and Jonathan H3083 : but with Saul H7586 and with Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 was there found H4672 .
23 And the garrison H4673 of the Philistines H6430 TMS went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the passage H4569 of Michmash H4363 .
