1 Kings 10:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 When the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, which brought honor to the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.
2 She arrived in Jerusalem with a large group of attendants and a great caravan of camels loaded with spices, large quantities of gold, and precious jewels. When she met with Solomon, she talked with him about everything she had on her mind.
3 Solomon had answers for all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her.
4 When the queen of Sheba realized how very wise Solomon was, and when she saw the palace he had built,
5 she was overwhelmed. She was also amazed at the food on his tables, the organization of his officials and their splendid clothing, the cup-bearers, and the burnt offerings Solomon made at the Temple of the LORD.
6 She exclaimed to the king, "Everything I heard in my country about your achievements and wisdom is true!
7 I didn't believe what was said until I arrived here and saw it with my own eyes. In fact, I had not heard the half of it! Your wisdom and prosperity are far beyond what I was told.
8 How happy your people must be! What a privilege for your officials to stand here day after day, listening to your wisdom!
9 Praise the LORD your God, who delights in you and has placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD's eternal love for Israel, he has made you king so you can rule with justice and righteousness."
10 Then she gave the king a gift of 9,000 pounds of gold, great quantities of spices, and precious jewels. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
11 (In addition, Hiram's ships brought gold from Ophir, and they also brought rich cargoes of red sandalwood and precious jewels.
12 The king used the sandalwood to make railings for the Temple of the LORD and the royal palace, and to construct lyres and harps for the musicians. Never before or since has there been such a supply of sandalwood.)
13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba whatever she asked for, besides all the customary gifts he had so generously given. Then she and all her attendants returned to their own land.
14 Each year Solomon received about 25 tons of gold.
15 This did not include the additional revenue he received from merchants and traders, all the kings of Arabia, and the governors of the land.
16 King Solomon made 200 large shields of hammered gold, each weighing more than fifteen pounds.
17 He also made 300 smaller shields of hammered gold, each weighing nearly four pounds. The king placed these shields in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
18 Then the king made a huge throne, decorated with ivory and overlaid with fine gold.
19 The throne had six steps and a rounded back. There were armrests on both sides of the seat, and the figure of a lion stood on each side of the throne.
20 There were also twelve other lions, one standing on each end of the six steps. No other throne in all the world could be compared with it!
21 All of King Solomon's drinking cups were solid gold, as were all the utensils in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon. They were not made of silver, for silver was considered worthless in Solomon's day!
22 The king had a fleet of trading ships that sailed with Hiram's fleet. Once every three years the ships returned, loaded with gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.
23 So King Solomon became richer and wiser than any other king on earth.
24 People from every nation came to consult him and to hear the wisdom God had given him.
25 Year after year everyone who visited brought him gifts of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.
26 Solomon built up a huge force of chariots and horses. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He stationed some of them in the chariot cities and some near him in Jerusalem.
27 The king made silver as plentiful in Jerusalem as stone. And valuable cedar timber was as common as the sycamore-fig trees that grow in the foothills of Judah.
28 Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Cilicia; the king's traders acquired them from Cilicia at the standard price.
29 At that time chariots from Egypt could be purchased for 600 pieces of silver, and horses for 150 pieces of silver. They were then exported to the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.

2 And she came H935 W-VQY3FS to Jerusalem H3389 with a very H3966 ADV great H3515 VQS3MS train H2428 , with camels H1581 NMP that bore H5375 spices H1314 , and very H3966 ADV much H7227 AMS gold H2091 , and precious H3368 stones H68 W-GFS : and when she was come H935 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Solomon H8010 MMS , she communed H1696 with H413 PREP-3MS him of all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO was H1961 VQQ3MS in H5973 PREP her heart H3824 .
3 And Solomon H8010 MMS told H5046 her all H3605 NMS her questions H1697 : there was H1961 VQQ3MS not H3808 ADV any thing H1697 VQPMS hid H5956 from H4480 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , which H834 RPRO he told H5046 VHQ3MS her not H3808 NADV .
4 And when the queen H4436 of Sheba H7614 TRIB had seen H7200 W-VQQ3FS all H3605 NMS Solomon H8010 MMS \'s wisdom H2451 , and the house H1004 that H834 RPRO he had built H1129 ,
5 And the meat H3978 of his table H7979 , and the sitting H4186 of his servants H5650 , and the attendance H4612 of his ministers H8334 , and their apparel H4403 , and his cupbearers H4945 , and his ascent H5930 by which H834 RPRO he went up H5927 VQY3MS unto the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS ; there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV spirit H7307 NMS in her .
6 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , It was H1961 VQQ3MS a true H571 CFS report H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO I heard H8085 VQQ1MS in mine own land H776 of H5921 PREP thy acts H1697 and of H5921 PREP thy wisdom H2451 .
7 Howbeit I believed H539 not H3808 ADV the words H1697 , until H5704 PREP I came H935 , and mine eyes H5869 CMD-1MS had seen H7200 it : and , behold H2009 IJEC , the half H2677 was not H3808 ADV told H5046 me : thy wisdom H2451 NFS and prosperity H2896 exceedeth H3254 the fame H8052 which H834 RPRO I heard H8085 .
8 Happy H835 CMP are thy men H376 , happy H835 CMP are these H428 PMP thy servants H5650 , which stand H5975 continually H8548 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee , and that hear H8085 thy wisdom H2451 .
9 Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be H1961 VPY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , which H834 RPRO delighted H2654 in thee , to set H5414 thee on H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of Israel H3478 : because the LORD H3068 EDS loved H157 Israel H3478 forever H5769 L-NMS , therefore made H7760 he thee king H4428 L-CMS , to do H6213 L-VQFC judgment H4941 NMS and justice H6666 .
10 And she gave H5414 W-VQY3FS the king H4428 a hundred H3967 MFS and twenty H6242 W-MMP talents H3603 CFS of gold H2091 NMS , and of spices H1314 very H3966 ADV great store H7235 VHFA , and precious H3368 stones H68 W-GFS : there came H935 no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV such H1931 D-PPRO-3MS abundance H7230 LD-NMS of spices H1314 as these which H834 RPRO the queen H4436 of Sheba H7614 TRIB gave H5414 to king H4428 Solomon H8010 .
11 And the navy H590 also H1571 W-CONJ of Hiram H2438 , that H834 RPRO brought H5375 VQQ3MS gold H2091 NMS from Ophir H211 , brought in H935 VHQ3MS from Ophir H211 great H3966 ADV plenty H7235 VHFA of almug H484 trees H6086 CMP , and precious H3368 stones H68 W-GFS .
12 And the king H4428 D-NMS made H6213 W-VQY3MS of the almug H484 trees H6086 CMP pillars H4552 for the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 EDS , and for the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 , harps H3658 also and psalteries H5035 for singers H7891 : there came H935 no H3808 NADV such H3651 ADV almug H484 trees H6086 CMP , nor H3808 W-NADV were seen H7200 unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
13 And king H4428 Solomon H8010 MMS gave H5414 VQQ3MS unto the queen H4436 of Sheba H7614 TRIB all H3605 NMS her desire H2656 , whatsoever H834 RPRO she asked H7592 , beside H905 ML-NMS that which H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 MMS gave H5414 her of his royal bounty H3027 . So she turned H6437 and went H1980 W-VQQ3FS to her own country H776 , she H1931 PPRO-3FS and her servants H5650 .
14 Now the weight H4948 of gold H2091 that H834 RPRO came H935 VQPMS to Solomon H8010 in one H259 MFS year H8141 was H1961 W-VPY3MS six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP threescore H8346 and six H8337 talents H3603 CFS of gold H2091 ,
15 Beside H905 that he had of the merchantmen H376 , and of the traffic H4536 of the spice merchants H7402 , and of all H3605 W-CMS the kings H4428 CMP of Arabia H6154 , and of the governors H6346 of the country H776 D-GFS .
16 And king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS made H6213 W-VQY3MS two hundred H3967 MFD targets H6793 of beaten H7820 gold H2091 NMS : six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP shekels of gold H2091 NMS went H5927 VQY3MS to H5921 PREP one H259 target H6793 .
17 And he made three H7969 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP shields H4043 NMP of beaten H7820 gold H2091 NMS ; three H7969 BMS pound H4488 of gold H2091 NMS went H5927 VQY3MS to H5921 PREP one H259 shield H4043 : and the king H4428 D-NMS put H5414 them in the house H1004 CMS of the forest H3293 of Lebanon H3844 .
18 Moreover the king H4428 D-NMS made H6213 W-VQY3MS a great H1419 AMS throne H3678 of ivory H8127 , and overlaid H6823 it with the best H6338 gold H2091 NMS .
19 The throne H3678 had six H8337 RFS steps H4609 , and the top H7218 of the throne H3678 was round H5696 behind H310 : and there were stays H3027 on either side H2088 M-DPRO on H413 PREP the place H4725 CMS of the seat H7675 , and two H8147 lions H738 stood H5975 VQPMP beside H681 the stays H3027 .
20 And twelve H8147 lions H738 stood H5975 VQPMP there H8033 ADV on H5921 PREP the one side H2088 M-DPRO and on the other H2088 upon the six H8337 RFS steps H4609 : there was not H3808 ADV the like H3651 ADV made H6213 in any H3605 L-CMS kingdom H4467 .
21 And all H3605 W-CMS king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS \'s drinking H4945 vessels H3627 were of gold H2091 NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS the vessels H3627 of the house H1004 of the forest H3293 of Lebanon H3844 were of pure H5462 VWPMS gold H2091 NMS ; none H369 NPAR were of silver H3701 NMS : it was nothing H3808 NADV accounted H2803 of in the days H3117 B-CMP of Solomon H8010 MMS .
22 For H3588 CONJ the king H4428 had at sea H3220 BD-NMS a navy H590 of Tharshish H8659 LFS with H5973 PREP the navy H590 of Hiram H2438 : once H259 OFS in three H7969 years H8141 NFP came H935 VQY2MS the navy H590 of Tharshish H8659 LFS , bringing H5375 gold H2091 NMS , and silver H3701 , ivory H8143 , and apes H6971 , and peacocks H8500 .
23 So king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS exceeded all H1431 the kings H4428 CMP of the earth H776 D-GFS for riches H6239 and for wisdom H2451 .
24 And all H3605 W-CMS the earth H776 D-GFS sought H1245 to H6440 CMP Solomon H8010 MMS , to hear H8085 his wisdom H2451 , which H834 RPRO God H430 EDP had put H5414 VQQ3MS in his heart H3820 .
25 And they H1992 brought H935 every man H376 NMS his present H4503 CFS-3MS , vessels H3627 of silver H3701 , and vessels H3627 of gold H2091 NMS , and garments H8008 , and armor H5402 , and spices H1314 , horses H5483 , and mules H6505 , a rate H1697 CMS year H8141 NFS by year H8141 .
26 And Solomon H8010 MMS gathered together H622 chariots H7393 and horsemen H6571 : and he had H1961 W-VQY3MS a thousand H505 W-BMS and four H702 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP chariots H7393 , and twelve H8147 thousand H505 W-BMS horsemen H6571 , whom he bestowed H5148 in the cities H5892 B-CFP for chariots H7393 , and with H5973 the king H4428 D-NMS at Jerusalem H3389 .
27 And the king H4428 D-NMS made H5414 W-VQQ3MS silver H3701 to be in Jerusalem H3389 as stones H68 , and cedars H730 made H5414 VQQ3MS he to be as the sycamore trees H8256 that H834 RPRO are in the vale H8219 , for abundance H7230 .
28 And Solomon H8010 had horses H5483 brought H4161 out of Egypt H4714 , and linen yarn H4723 : the king H4428 D-NMS \'s merchants H5503 received H3947 VQY3MP the linen yarn H4723 at a price H4242 .
29 And a chariot H4818 came up H5927 and went out H3318 of Egypt H4714 M-TFS for six H8337 B-BFP hundred H3967 BFP shekels of silver H3701 NMS , and a horse H5483 for a hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 : and so H3651 for all H3605 L-CMS the kings H4428 CMP of the Hittites H2850 , and for the kings H4428 of Syria H758 EMS , did they bring them out H3318 by their means H3027 .
