Exodus 33:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 The LORD said to Moses, "Get going, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt. Go up to the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them, 'I will give this land to your descendants.'
2 And I will send an angel before you to drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
3 Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way."
4 When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes.
5 For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, "You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you."
6 So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry or fine clothes.
7 It was Moses' practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
8 Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside.
9 As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses.
10 When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents.
11 Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.
12 One day Moses said to the LORD, "You have been telling me, 'Take these people up to the Promised Land.' But you haven't told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, 'I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.'
13 If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people."
14 The LORD replied, "I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest-- everything will be fine for you."
15 Then Moses said, "If you don't personally go with us, don't make us leave this place.
16 How will anyone know that you look favorably on me-- on me and on your people-- if you don't go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth."
17 The LORD replied to Moses, "I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name."
18 Moses responded, "Then show me your glorious presence."
19 The LORD replied, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.
20 But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live."
21 The LORD continued, "Look, stand near me on this rock.
22 As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
23 Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen."

2 And I will send H7971 an angel H4397 NMS before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee ; and I will drive out H1644 the Canaanite H3669 , the Amorite H567 , and the Hittite H2850 , and the Perizzite H6522 WD-EMS , the Hivite H2340 , and the Jebusite H2983 :
3 Unto H413 PREP a land H776 GFS flowing H2100 with milk H2461 NMS and honey H1706 : for H3588 CONJ I will not H3808 NADV go up H5927 in the midst H7130 of thee ; for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art a stiffnecked H7186 people H5971 NMS : lest H6435 CONJ I consume H3615 thee in the way H1870 .
4 And when the people H5971 heard H8085 these H2088 D-PMS evil H7451 D-AMS tidings H1697 D-NMS , they mourned H56 : and no H3808 W-NPAR man H376 NMS did put H7896 on H5921 him his ornaments H5716 .
5 For the LORD H3068 EDS had said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS are a stiffnecked H7186 people H5971 NMS : I will come up H5927 into the midst H7130 of thee in a H259 MMS moment H7281 NMS , and consume H3615 thee : therefore now H6258 W-ADV put off H3381 thy ornaments H5716 from thee , that I may know H3045 what H4100 IGAT to do H6213 VQY1MS unto thee .
6 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 stripped themselves H5337 of their ornaments H5716 by the mount H2022 Horeb H2722 .
7 And Moses H4872 took H3947 the tabernacle H168 , and pitched H5186 it without H2351 the camp H4264 , afar off H7368 from H4480 PREP the camp H4264 , and called H7121 it the Tabernacle H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS . And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that every one H3605 NMS which sought H1245 the LORD H3068 EDS went out H3318 VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the tabernacle H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , which H834 RPRO was without H2351 the camp H4264 .
8 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when Moses H4872 went out H3318 unto H413 PREP the tabernacle H168 , that all H3605 NMS the people H5971 rose up H6965 VQY3MP , and stood H5324 every man H376 NMS at his tent H168 door H6607 CMS , and looked H5027 after H310 PREP Moses H4872 , until H5704 PREP he was gone H935 into the tabernacle H168 .
9 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , as Moses H4872 entered into H935 the tabernacle H168 , the cloudy H6051 pillar H5982 descended H3381 , and stood H5975 W-VQQ3MS at the door H6607 CMS of the tabernacle H168 , and the LORD talked H1696 with H5973 PREP Moses H4872 .
10 And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 saw H7200 the cloudy H6051 pillar H5982 stand H5975 at the tabernacle H168 door H6607 CMS : and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 rose up H6965 and worshiped H7812 , every man H376 NMS in his tent H168 door H6607 CMS .
11 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 face H6440 NMP to H413 PREP face H6440 NMP , as H834 K-RPRO a man H376 NMS speaketh H1696 VPY3MS unto H413 PREP his friend H7453 NMS-3MS . And he turned again H7725 W-VQQ3MS into H413 PREP the camp H4264 : but his servant H8334 Joshua H3091 , the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , a young man H5288 , departed H4185 not H3808 NADV out of the tabernacle H168 .
12 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , See H7200 VQI2MS , thou H859 PPRO-2MS sayest H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP me , Bring up H5927 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 : and thou H859 PPRO-2FS hast not H3808 NADV let me know H3045 whom H834 RPRO thou wilt send H7971 VQY2MS with H5973 me . Yet thou H859 PPRO-2FS hast said H559 W-VQY3MS , I know H3045 thee by name H8034 , and thou hast also H1571 W-CONJ found H4672 grace H2580 NMS in my sight H5869 .
13 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , if H518 PART I have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 , show H3045 me now H4994 IJEC thy way H1870 , that H4616 L-CONJ I may know H3045 thee , that I may find H4672 VQY1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 : and consider H7200 W-VQI2MS that H3588 CONJ this H2088 D-PMS nation H1471 is thy people H5971 .
14 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , My presence H6440 NMP-1MS shall go H1980 with thee , and I will give thee rest H5117 .
15 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , If H518 PART thy presence H6440 CMP-2MS go H1980 not H369 NPAR with me , carry us not up H5927 hence H2088 .
16 For wherein H4100 shall it be known H3045 here H645 CONJ that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS and thy people H5971 have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 ? is it not H3808 D-NPAR in that thou goest H1980 with H5973 PREP-1MP us ? so shall we be separated H6395 , I H589 PPRO-1MS and thy people H5971 , from all H3605 M-CMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the earth H127 D-NFS .
17 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , I will do H6213 VQY1MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS also H1571 CONJ that H834 RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 : for H3588 CONJ thou hast found H4672 grace H2580 NMS in my sight H5869 , and I know H3045 thee by name H8034 .
18 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , show H7200 me thy glory H3519 .
19 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS will make all H3605 NMS my goodness H2898 pass H5674 before H5921 PREP thee , and I will proclaim H7121 the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS before H6440 CMP-2MS thee ; and will be gracious H2603 W-VQQ1MS to whom H834 RPRO I will be gracious H2603 , and will show mercy H7355 on whom H834 RPRO I will show mercy H7355 .
20 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou canst H3201 not H3808 NADV see H7200 L-VQFC my face H6440 : for H3588 CONJ there shall no H3808 ADV man H120 D-NMS see H7200 me , and live H2425 .
21 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , there is a place H4725 NUM-MS by H854 me , and thou shalt stand H5324 upon H5921 PREP a rock H6697 :
22 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , while my glory H3519 passeth by H5674 , that I will put H7760 thee in a cleft H5366 of the rock H6697 , and will cover H5526 thee with my hand H3709 while H5704 PREP I pass by H5674 :
23 And I will take away H5493 mine hand H3709 , and thou shalt see H7200 my back parts H268 : but my face H6440 shall not H3808 NADV be seen H7200 .
