2 Kings 13:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Jehoahaz son of Jehu began to rule over Israel in the twenty-third year of King Joash's reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria seventeen years.
2 But he did what was evil in the LORD's sight. He followed the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat, continuing the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit.
3 So the LORD was very angry with Israel, and he allowed King Hazael of Aram and his son Ben-hadad to defeat them repeatedly.
4 Then Jehoahaz prayed for the LORD's help, and the LORD heard his prayer, for he could see how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel.
5 So the LORD provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the tyranny of the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again as they had in former days.
6 But they continued to sin, following the evil example of Jeroboam. They also allowed the Asherah pole in Samaria to remain standing.
7 Finally, Jehoahaz's army was reduced to 50 charioteers, 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers. The king of Aram had killed the others, trampling them like dust under his feet.
8 The rest of the events in Jehoahaz's reign-- everything he did and the extent of his power-- are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
9 When Jehoahaz died, he was buried in Samaria. Then his son Jehoash became the next king.
10 Jehoash son of Jehoahaz began to rule over Israel in the thirty-seventh year of King Joash's reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria sixteen years.
11 But he did what was evil in the LORD's sight. He refused to turn from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel to commit.
12 The rest of the events in Jehoash's reign and everything he did, including the extent of his power and his war with King Amaziah of Judah, are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
13 When Jehoash died, he was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. Then his son Jeroboam II became the next king.
14 When Elisha was in his last illness, King Jehoash of Israel visited him and wept over him. "My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!" he cried.
15 Elisha told him, "Get a bow and some arrows." And the king did as he was told.
16 Elisha told him, "Put your hand on the bow," and Elisha laid his own hands on the king's hands.
17 Then he commanded, "Open that eastern window," and he opened it. Then he said, "Shoot!" So he shot an arrow. Elisha proclaimed, "This is the LORD's arrow, an arrow of victory over Aram, for you will completely conquer the Arameans at Aphek.
18 Then he said, "Now pick up the other arrows and strike them against the ground." So the king picked them up and struck the ground three times.
19 But the man of God was angry with him. "You should have struck the ground five or six times!" he exclaimed. "Then you would have beaten Aram until it was entirely destroyed. Now you will be victorious only three times."
20 Then Elisha died and was buried.Groups of Moabite raiders used to invade the land each spring.
21 Once when some Israelites were burying a man, they spied a band of these raiders. So they hastily threw the corpse into the tomb of Elisha and fled. But as soon as the body touched Elisha's bones, the dead man revived and jumped to his feet!
22 King Hazael of Aram had oppressed Israel during the entire reign of King Jehoahaz.
23 But the LORD was gracious and merciful to the people of Israel, and they were not totally destroyed. He pitied them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And to this day he still has not completely destroyed them or banished them from his presence.
24 King Hazael of Aram died, and his son Ben-hadad became the next king.
25 Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-hadad son of Hazael the towns that had been taken from Jehoash's father, Jehoahaz. Jehoash defeated Ben-hadad on three occasions, and he recovered the Israelite towns.

2 And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and followed H1980 W-VQY3MS the sins H2403 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 , which H834 RPRO made Israel H3478 to sin H2398 ; he departed H5493 not H3808 NADV therefrom H4480 PREP-3FS .
3 And the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was kindled H2734 against Israel H3478 , and he delivered H5414 them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS , and into the hand H3027 of Ben H1130 - hadad the son H1121 of Hazael H2371 , all H3605 NMS their days H3117 D-NMP .
4 And Jehoahaz H3059 besought H2470 the LORD H6440 CMP , and the LORD H3068 EDS hearkened H8085 unto H413 PREP-3MS him : for H3588 CONJ he saw H7200 VQQ3MS the oppression H3906 of Israel H3478 , because H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 oppressed H3905 them .
5 (And the LORD H3068 EDS gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS Israel H3478 a savior H3467 , so that they went out H3318 W-VQY3MP from under H8478 M-CFS the hand H3027 CFS of the Syrians H758 EMS : and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in their tents H168 , as formerly H8543 .
6 Nevertheless H389 ADV they departed H5493 VQQ3MP not H3808 ADV from the sins H2403 of the house H1004 CMS of Jeroboam H3379 , who H834 RPRO made Israel H3478 sin H2398 , but walked H1980 therein : and there remained H5975 the grove H842 also H1571 W-CONJ in Samaria H8111 . )
7 Neither H3808 NADV did he leave H7604 of the people H5971 NMS to Jehoahaz H3059 but H518 PART fifty H2572 MMP horsemen H6571 , and ten H6235 chariots H7393 , and ten H6235 thousand H505 MMP footmen H7273 ; for H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS had destroyed H6 them , and had made H7760 them like the dust H6083 by threshing H1758 .
8 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Jehoahaz H3059 , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS , and his might H1369 , are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 D-NPAR written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478 LMS ?
9 And Jehoahaz H3059 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 ; and they buried H6912 him in Samaria H8111 : and Joash H3101 his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
10 In the thirty H7970 MMP and seventh H7651 year H8141 B-CFS of Joash H3101 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 began Jehoash H3060 the son H1121 of Jehoahaz H3059 to reign H4427 over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 in Samaria H8111 , and reigned sixteen H8337 RFS years H8141 B-CFS .
11 And he did H6213 that which was evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS ; he departed H5493 not H3808 NADV from all H3605 M-CMS the sins H2403 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 , who H834 RPRO made Israel H3478 sin H2398 : but he walked H1980 therein .
12 And the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Joash H3101 , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS , and his might H1369 wherewith H834 RPRO he fought H3898 against H5973 PREP Amaziah H558 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS ?
13 And Joash H3101 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 ; and Jeroboam H3379 sat H3427 VQQ3MS upon H5921 PREP his throne H3678 : and Joash H3101 was buried H6912 in Samaria H8111 with H5973 PREP the kings H4428 CMP of Israel H3478 LMS .
14 Now Elisha H477 was fallen sick H2470 of H854 PREP his sickness H2483 whereof H834 RPRO he died H4191 VQY3MS . And Joash H3101 the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 came down H3381 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and wept H1058 over H5921 PREP his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , O my father H1 CMS-1MS , my father H1 CMS-1MS , the chariot H7393 of Israel H3478 , and the horsemen H6571 thereof .
15 And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Take H3947 VQI2MS bow H7198 CFS and arrows H2671 . And he took H3947 VQI2MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him bow H7198 CFS and arrows H2671 .
16 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS to the king H4428 L-CMS of Israel H3478 , Put H7392 thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS upon H5921 PREP the bow H7198 D-NFS . And he put H7392 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS upon it : and Elisha H477 put H7760 W-VQY3MS his hands H3027 CFD-3MS upon H5921 PREP the king H4428 \'s hands H3027 CFD .
17 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Open H6605 the window H2474 eastward H6924 . And he opened H6605 it . Then Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Shoot H3384 . And he shot H3384 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , The arrow H2671 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s deliverance H8668 , and the arrow H2671 of deliverance H8668 from Syria H758 : for thou shalt smite H5221 the Syrians H758 EMS in Aphek H663 , till H5704 PREP thou have consumed H3615 them .
18 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Take H3947 VQI2MS the arrows H2671 . And he took H3947 VQI2MS them . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the king H4428 of Israel H3478 , Smite H5221 upon the ground H776 NFS-3FS . And he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS thrice H7969 , and stayed H5975 .
19 And the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP was wroth H7107 with H5921 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shouldest have smitten H5221 L-VHFC five H2568 MFS or H176 CONJ six H8337 RFS times H6471 NFP ; then H227 ADV hadst thou smitten H5221 Syria H758 EMS till H5704 PREP thou hadst consumed H3615 it : whereas now H6258 W-ADV thou shalt smite H5221 Syria H758 but thrice H7969 MFS .
20 And Elisha H477 died H4191 W-VQY3MS , and they buried H6912 him . And the bands H1416 of the Moabites H4124 invaded H935 VQY3MP the land H776 BD-GFS at the coming in H935 VQPMS of the year H8141 NFS .
21 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as they H1992 PPRO-3MP were burying H6912 a man H376 NMS , that , behold H2009 IJEC , they spied H7200 VQQ3MP a band H1416 of men ; and they cast H7993 the man H376 D-NMS into the sepulcher H6913 of Elisha H477 : and when the man H376 D-NMS was let down H1980 W-VQY3MS , and touched H5060 W-VQY3MS the bones H6106 of Elisha H477 , he revived H2421 W-VQY3MS , and stood up H6965 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP his feet H7272 .
22 But Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS oppressed H3905 Israel H3478 all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of Jehoahaz H3059 .
23 And the LORD H3068 EDS was gracious H2603 unto them , and had compassion on H7355 them , and had respect H6437 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , because H4616 L-CONJ of his covenant H1285 with H854 Abraham H85 , Isaac H3327 , and Jacob H3290 , and would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR destroy H7843 them , neither H3808 W-NPAR cast H7993 he them from his presence H6440 CMP-3MS as H5704 PREP yet H6258 .
24 So Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS died H4191 W-VQY3MS ; and Ben H1130 - hadad his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
25 And Jehoash H3060 the son H1121 of Jehoahaz H3059 took H3947 W-VQY3MS again H7725 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of Ben H1130 - hadad the son H1121 of Hazael H2371 the cities H5892 , which H834 RPRO he had taken H3947 VQQ3MS out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of Jehoahaz H3059 his father H1 CMS-3MS by war H4421 . Three H7969 MFS times H6471 NFP did Joash H3101 beat H5221 him , and recovered H7725 W-VHY3MS the cities H5892 of Israel H3478 LMS .
