Leviticus 11:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
2 "Give the following instructions to the people of Israel."Of all the land animals, these are the ones you may use for food.
3 You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud.
4 You may not, however, eat the following animals that have split hooves or that chew the cud, but not both. The camel chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is ceremonially unclean for you.
5 The hyrax chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is unclean.
6 The hare chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is unclean.
7 The pig has evenly split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is unclean.
8 You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses. They are ceremonially unclean for you.
9 "Of all the marine animals, these are ones you may use for food. You may eat anything from the water if it has both fins and scales, whether taken from salt water or from streams.
10 But you must never eat animals from the sea or from rivers that do not have both fins and scales. They are detestable to you. This applies both to little creatures that live in shallow water and to all creatures that live in deep water.
11 They will always be detestable to you. You must never eat their meat or even touch their dead bodies.
12 Any marine animal that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you.
13 "These are the birds that are detestable to you. You must never eat them: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
14 the kite, falcons of all kinds,
15 ravens of all kinds,
16 the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds,
17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
18 the barn owl, the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture,
19 the stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
20 "You must not eat winged insects that walk along the ground; they are detestable to you.
21 You may, however, eat winged insects that walk along the ground and have jointed legs so they can jump.
22 The insects you are permitted to eat include all kinds of locusts, bald locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers.
23 All other winged insects that walk along the ground are detestable to you.
24 "The following creatures will make you ceremonially unclean. If any of you touch their carcasses, you will be defiled until evening.
25 If you pick up their carcasses, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening.
26 "Any animal that has split hooves that are not evenly divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. If you touch the carcass of such an animal, you will be defiled.
27 Of the animals that walk on all fours, those that have paws are unclean. If you touch the carcass of such an animal, you will be defiled until evening.
28 If you pick up its carcass, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening. These animals are unclean for you.
29 "Of the small animals that scurry along the ground, these are unclean for you: the mole rat, the rat, large lizards of all kinds,
30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.
31 All these small animals are unclean for you. If any of you touch the dead body of such an animal, you will be defiled until evening.
32 If such an animal dies and falls on something, that object will be unclean. This is true whether the object is made of wood, cloth, leather, or burlap. Whatever its use, you must dip it in water, and it will remain defiled until evening. After that, it will be ceremonially clean and may be used again.
33 "If such an animal falls into a clay pot, everything in the pot will be defiled, and the pot must be smashed.
34 If the water from such a container spills on any food, the food will be defiled. And any beverage in such a container will be defiled.
35 Any object on which the carcass of such an animal falls will be defiled. If it is an oven or hearth, it must be destroyed, for it is defiled, and you must treat it accordingly.
36 "However, if the carcass of such an animal falls into a spring or a cistern, the water will still be clean. But anyone who touches the carcass will be defiled.
37 If the carcass falls on seed grain to be planted in the field, the seed will still be considered clean.
38 But if the seed is wet when the carcass falls on it, the seed will be defiled.
39 "If an animal you are permitted to eat dies and you touch its carcass, you will be defiled until evening.
40 If you eat any of its meat or carry away its carcass, you must wash your clothes, and you will remain defiled until evening.
41 "All small animals that scurry along the ground are detestable, and you must never eat them.
42 This includes all animals that slither along on their bellies, as well as those with four legs and those with many feet. All such animals that scurry along the ground are detestable, and you must never eat them.
43 Do not defile yourselves by touching them. You must not make yourselves ceremonially unclean because of them.
44 For I am the LORD your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. So do not defile yourselves with any of these small animals that scurry along the ground.
45 For I, the LORD, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy.
46 "These are the instructions regarding land animals, birds, marine creatures, and animals that scurry along the ground.
47 By these instructions you will know what is unclean and clean, and which animals may be eaten and which may not be eaten."

3 Whatsoever H3605 NMS parteth H6536 the hoof H6541 , and is cloven H8156 - footed , and cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , among the beasts H929 BD-NFS , that shall ye eat H398 .
4 Nevertheless H389 ADV these H2088 DPRO shall ye not H3808 NADV eat H398 VQY2MP of them that chew H5927 the cud H1625 , or of them that divide H6536 the hoof H6541 : as the camel H1581 , because H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H369 the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 PPRO-3MS is unclean H2931 unto you .
5 And the coney H8227 , because H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H3808 NADV the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 PPRO-3MS is unclean H2931 unto you .
6 And the hare H768 , because H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3FS cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , but divideth H6536 not H3808 NADV the hoof H6541 ; he H1931 PPRO-3FS is unclean H2931 unto you .
7 And the swine H2386 , though H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS divide H6536 the hoof H6541 , and be cloven H8156 - footed , yet he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS cheweth H1641 not H3808 ADV the cud H1625 ; he H1931 PPRO-3MS is unclean H2931 to you .
8 Of their flesh H1320 shall ye not H3808 NADV eat H398 , and their carcass H5038 shall ye not H3808 NADV touch H5060 ; they H1992 PPRO-3MP are unclean H2931 to you .
9 These H2088 DPRO shall ye eat H398 of all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO are in the waters H4325 : whatsoever H3605 NMS hath fins H5579 and scales H7193 in the waters H4325 BD-NMP , in the seas H3220 B-NMP , and in the rivers H5158 , them shall ye eat H398 .
10 And all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO have not H369 ADV fins H5579 and scales H7193 in the seas H3220 B-NMP , and in the rivers H5158 , of all H3605 M-CMS that move H8318 in the waters H4325 D-CMS , and of any H3605 WM-CMS living H2416 D-NFS thing H5315 GFS which H834 RPRO is in the waters H4325 D-CMS , they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall be an abomination H8263 unto you :
11 They shall be H1961 VQY3MP even an abomination H8263 unto you ; ye shall not H3808 NADV eat H398 of their flesh H1320 , but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination H8262 .
12 Whatsoever H834 RPRO hath no H369 ADV fins H5579 nor scales H7193 in the waters H4325 , that H1931 PPRO-3MS shall be an abomination H8263 unto you .
13 And these H428 PMP are they which ye shall have in abomination H8262 among H4480 PREP the fowls H5775 D-NMS ; they shall not H3808 NADV be eaten H398 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP are an abomination H8263 : the eagle H5404 , and the ossifrage H6538 , and the osprey H5822 ,
14 And the vulture H1676 , and the kite H344 after his kind H4327 ;
15 Every H3605 NMS raven H6158 after his kind H4327 ;
16 And the owl H1323 CFS , and the night hawk H8464 , and the cuckoo H7828 , and the hawk H5322 after his kind H4327 ,
17 And the little owl H3563 , and the cormorant H7994 , and the great owl H3244 ,
18 And the swan H8580 , and the pelican H6893 , and the gier H7360 - eagle ,
19 And the stork H2624 , the heron H601 after her kind H4327 L-CMS-3FS , and the lapwing H1744 , and the bat H5847 .
20 All H3605 NMS fowls H5775 D-NMS that creep H8318 , going H1980 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP all four H702 MFS , shall be an abomination H8263 unto you .
21 Yet H389 ADV these H2088 DPRO may ye eat H398 of every H3605 M-CMS flying H5775 D-NMS creeping thing H8318 that goeth H1980 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP all four H702 MFS , which H834 RPRO have legs H3767 above H4605 their feet H7272 , to leap H5425 withal H2004 upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS ;
22 Even these H428 PMP of H4480 them ye may eat H398 ; the locust H697 after his kind H4327 , and the bald locust H5556 after his kind H4327 L-NMS-3MS , and the beetle H2728 after his kind H4327 L-NMS-3MS , and the grasshopper H2284 after his kind H4327 .
23 But all H3605 W-CMS other flying H5775 D-NMS creeping things H8318 , which H834 RPRO have four H702 MFS feet H7272 , shall be an abomination H8263 unto you .
24 And for these H428 ye shall be unclean H2930 : whosoever H3605 NMS toucheth H5060 the carcass H5038 of them shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
25 And whosoever H3605 W-CMS beareth H5375 aught of the carcass H5038 of them shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
26 The carcasses of every H3605 NMS beast H929 D-NFS which H834 RPRO divideth H6536 the hoof H6541 , and is not H369 NPAR-3FS cloven H8156 - footed , nor H369 NPAR-3FS cheweth H5927 the cud H1625 , are unclean H2931 unto you : every one H3605 NMS that toucheth H5060 them shall be unclean H2930 .
27 And whatsoever H3605 NMS goeth H1980 VQPMS upon H5921 PREP his paws H3709 , among all manner H3605 NMS of beasts H2416 that go H1980 on H5921 PREP all four H702 MFS , those H1992 PPRO-3MP are unclean H2931 unto you : whoso H3605 NMS toucheth H5060 their carcass H5038 shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
28 And he that beareth H5375 the carcass H5038 of them shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 : they H1992 PPRO-3MP are unclean H2931 unto you .
29 These H2088 W-PMS also shall be unclean H2931 unto you among the creeping things H8318 that creep H8317 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS ; the weasel H2467 , and the mouse H5909 , and the tortoise H6632 after his kind H4327 ,
30 And the ferret H604 , and the chameleon H3581 , and the lizard H3911 , and the snail H2546 , and the mole H8580 .
31 These H428 PMP are unclean H2931 to you among all H3605 NMS that creep H8318 : whosoever H3605 NMS doth touch H5060 them , when they be dead H4194 , shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
32 And upon H5921 PREP-3MS whatsoever H3605 NMS any of H4480 them , when they are dead H4194 , doth fall H5307 VQY3MS , it shall be unclean H2930 ; whether it be any H3605 NMS vessel H3627 CMS of wood H6086 NMS , or H176 CONJ raiment H899 , or H176 CONJ skin H5785 NMS , or H176 CONJ sack H8242 , whatsoever H3605 NMS vessel H3627 CMS it be , wherein H834 RPRO any work H4399 is done H6213 , it must be put H935 into water H4325 BD-NMP , and it shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 ; so it shall be cleansed H2891 .
33 And every H3605 NMS earthen H2789 NMS vessel H3627 CMS , whereinto H834 RPRO any of H4480 them falleth H5307 VQY3MS , whatsoever H3605 NMS is in H8432 it shall be unclean H2930 ; and ye shall break H7665 it .
34 Of all H3605 M-CMS meat H400 which H834 RPRO may be eaten H398 , that on H5921 PREP-3MS which H834 RPRO such water H4325 OMD cometh H935 VQY3MS shall be unclean H2930 : and all H3605 W-CMS drink H4945 NMS that H834 RPRO may be drunk H8354 in every H3605 B-CMS such vessel H3627 CMS shall be unclean H2930 .
35 And every H3605 W-CMS thing whereupon H834 RPRO any part of their carcass H5038 falleth H5307 VQY3MS shall be unclean H2930 ; whether it be oven H8574 , or ranges for pots H3600 , they shall be broken down H5422 : for they H1992 PPRO-3MP are unclean H2931 , and shall be H1961 VQY3MP unclean H2931 unto you .
36 Nevertheless H389 ADV a fountain H4599 or pit H953 , wherein there is plenty H4723 of water H4325 OMD , shall be H1961 VQY3MS clean H2889 AMS : but that which toucheth H5060 their carcass H5038 shall be unclean H2930 .
37 And if H3588 W-CONJ any part of H4480 their carcass H5038 fall H5307 VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP any H3605 NMS sowing H2221 seed H2233 NMS which H834 RPRO is to be sown H2232 , it H1931 PPRO-3MS shall be clean H2889 AMS .
38 But if H3588 W-CONJ any water H4325 OMD be put H5414 VWY3MS upon H5921 PREP the seed H2233 NMS , and any part of their carcass H5038 fall H5307 thereon H5921 PREP , it H1931 PPRO-3MS shall be unclean H2931 unto you .
39 And if H3588 W-CONJ any beast H929 D-NFS , of H4480 PREP which H834 RPRO ye may eat H402 L-NFS , die H4191 VQY3MS ; he that toucheth H5060 the carcass H5038 thereof shall be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
40 And he that eateth H398 of the carcass H5038 of it shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 : he also that beareth H5375 the carcass H5038 of it shall wash H3526 his clothes H899 , and be unclean H2930 until H5704 PREP the even H6153 .
41 And every H3605 W-CMS creeping thing H8318 D-NMS that creepeth H8317 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS shall be an abomination H8263 ; it shall not H3808 NADV be eaten H398 .
42 Whatsoever H3605 NMS goeth H1980 VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the belly H1512 , and whatsoever H3605 NMS goeth H1980 VQPMS upon H5921 PREP all four H702 MFS , or whatsoever H3605 NMS hath more H7235 feet H7272 among all H3605 NMS creeping things H8318 D-NMS that creep H8317 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS , them ye shall not H3808 NADV eat H398 ; for H3588 CONJ they H1992 are an abomination H8263 .
43 Ye shall not H408 NPAR make yourselves abominable H8262 with any H3605 B-CMS creeping thing H8318 D-NMS that creepeth H8317 D-VQPMS , neither H3808 W-NPAR shall ye make yourselves unclean H2930 with them , that ye should be defiled H2930 thereby .
44 For H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 : ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves H6942 , and ye shall be H1961 W-VQQ2MP holy H6918 ; for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am holy H6918 : neither H3808 W-NPAR shall ye defile H2930 yourselves H5315 with any manner H3605 B-CMS of creeping thing H8318 D-NMS that creepeth H7430 D-NMS upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS .
45 For H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS that bringeth you up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , to be H1961 your God H430 : ye shall therefore be H1961 W-VQQ2MP holy H6918 , for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am holy H6918 .
46 This H2063 DPRO is the law H8451 CFS of the beasts H929 D-NFS , and of the fowl H5775 W-NMS , and of every H3605 W-CMS living H2416 creature H5315 GFS that moveth H7430 in the waters H4325 , and of every H3605 creature H5315 GFS that creepeth H8317 upon H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS :
47 To make a difference H914 L-VHFC between H996 PREP the unclean H2931 and the clean H2889 D-AMS , and between H996 PREP the beast H2416 that may be eaten H398 and the beast H2416 that H834 RPRO may not H3808 NADV be eaten H398 .
