Isaiah 10:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 What sorrow awaits the unjust judges and those who issue unfair laws.
2 They deprive the poor of justice and deny the rights of the needy among my people. They prey on widows and take advantage of orphans.
3 What will you do when I punish you, when I send disaster upon you from a distant land? To whom will you turn for help? Where will your treasures be safe?
4 You will stumble along as prisoners or lie among the dead. But even then the LORD's anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.
5 "What sorrow awaits Assyria, the rod of my anger. I use it as a club to express my anger.
6 I am sending Assyria against a godless nation, against a people with whom I am angry. Assyria will plunder them, trampling them like dirt beneath its feet.
7 But the king of Assyria will not understand that he is my tool; his mind does not work that way. His plan is simply to destroy, to cut down nation after nation.
8 He will say, 'Each of my princes will soon be a king.
9 We destroyed Calno just as we did Carchemish. Hamath fell before us as Arpad did. And we destroyed Samaria just as we did Damascus.
10 Yes, we have finished off many a kingdom whose gods were greater than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.
11 So we will defeat Jerusalem and her gods, just as we destroyed Samaria with hers.'"
12 After the Lord has used the king of Assyria to accomplish his purposes on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish him-- for he is proud and arrogant.
13 He boasts, "By my own powerful arm I have done this. With my own shrewd wisdom I planned it. I have broken down the defenses of nations and carried off their treasures. I have knocked down their kings like a bull.
14 I have robbed their nests of riches and gathered up kingdoms as a farmer gathers eggs. No one can even flap a wing against me or utter a peep of protest."
15 But can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it? Is the saw greater than the person who saws? Can a rod strike unless a hand moves it? Can a wooden cane walk by itself?
16 Therefore, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, will send a plague among Assyria's proud troops, and a flaming fire will consume its glory.
17 The LORD, the Light of Israel, will be a fire; the Holy One will be a flame. He will devour the thorns and briers with fire, burning up the enemy in a single night.
18 The LORD will consume Assyria's glory like a fire consumes a forest in a fruitful land; it will waste away like sick people in a plague.
19 Of all that glorious forest, only a few trees will survive-- so few that a child could count them!
20 In that day the remnant left in Israel, the survivors in the house of Jacob, will no longer depend on allies who seek to destroy them. But they will faithfully trust the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
21 A remnant will return; yes, the remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.
22 But though the people of Israel are as numerous as the sand of the seashore, only a remnant of them will return. The LORD has rightly decided to destroy his people.
23 Yes, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, has already decided to destroy the entire land.
24 So this is what the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, says: "O my people in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians when they oppress you with rod and club as the Egyptians did long ago.
25 In a little while my anger against you will end, and then my anger will rise up to destroy them."
26 The LORD of Heaven's Armies will lash them with his whip, as he did when Gideon triumphed over the Midianites at the rock of Oreb, or when the LORD's staff was raised to drown the Egyptian army in the sea.
27 In that day the LORD will end the bondage of his people. He will break the yoke of slavery and lift it from their shoulders.
28 Look, the Assyrians are now at Aiath. They are passing through Migron and are storing their equipment at Micmash.
29 They are crossing the pass and are camping at Geba. Fear strikes the town of Ramah. All the people of Gibeah, the hometown of Saul, are running for their lives.
30 Scream in terror, you people of Gallim! Shout out a warning to Laishah. Oh, poor Anathoth!
31 There go the people of Madmenah, all fleeing. The citizens of Gebim are trying to hide.
32 The enemy stops at Nob for the rest of that day. He shakes his fist at beautiful Mount Zion, the mountain of Jerusalem.
33 But look! The Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies, will chop down the mighty tree of Assyria with great power! He will cut down the proud. That lofty tree will be brought down.
34 He will cut down the forest trees with an ax. Lebanon will fall to the Mighty One.
1 Woe H1945 unto them that decree H2710 unrighteous H205 NMS decrees H2711 , and that write H3789 grievousness H5999 NMS which they have prescribed H3789 ;
2 To turn aside H5186 the needy H1800 JMP from judgment H1779 , and to take away H1497 the right H4941 CMS from the poor H6041 of my people H5971 , that widows H490 NFP may be H1961 their prey H7998 , and that they may rob H962 the fatherless H3490 NMP !
3 And what H4100 will ye do H6213 in the day H3117 L-NMS of visitation H6486 , and in the desolation H7722 which shall come H935 VQY2MS from far H4801 ? to H5921 PREP whom H4310 IPRO will ye flee H5127 for help H5833 ? and where H575 will ye leave H5800 your glory H3519 ?
4 Without H1115 PREP me they shall bow down H3766 under H8478 NMS the prisoners H616 , and they shall fall H5307 under H8478 NMS the slain H2026 . For all H3605 B-CMS this H2063 DPRO his anger H639 CMS-3MS is not H3808 NADV turned away H7725 VQQ3MS , but his hand H3027 CFS-3MS is stretched out H5186 still H5750 W-ADV .
5 O Assyrian H804 GFS , the rod H7626 CMS of mine anger H639 CMS-1MS , and the staff H4294 in their hand H3027 B-CFS-3MP is mine indignation H2195 .
6 I will send H7971 him against a hypocritical H2611 NMS nation H1471 , and against H5921 W-PREP the people H5971 NMS of my wrath H5678 will I give him a charge H6680 , to take H7997 the spoil H7998 , and to take H962 the prey H957 , and to tread them down H4823 like the mire H2563 K-CMS of the streets H2351 CFP .
7 Howbeit he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS meaneth H1819 not H3808 NADV so H3651 ADV , neither H3808 NADV doth his heart H3824 think H2803 VQY3MS so H3651 ADV ; but H3588 CONJ it is in his heart H3824 to destroy H8045 and cut off H3772 nations H1471 NMP not H3808 NADV a few H4592 .
8 For H3588 CONJ he saith H559 VQY3MS , Are not H3808 I-NADV my princes H8269 altogether H3162 ADV-3MS kings H4428 ?
9 Is not H3808 ADV Calno H3641 as Carchemish H3751 ? is not H3808 NADV Hamath H2574 as Arpad H774 ? is not H3808 NADV Samaria H8111 as Damascus H1834 ?
10 As H834 K-RPRO my hand H3027 CFS-1MS hath found H4672 VQQ3FS the kingdoms H4467 of the idols H457 , and whose graven images H6456 did excel them of Jerusalem H3389 and of Samaria H8111 ;
11 Shall I not H3808 I-NADV , as H834 K-RPRO I have done H6213 VQQ1MS unto Samaria H8111 and her idols H457 , so H3651 ADV do H6213 to Jerusalem H3389 and her idols H6091 ?
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that when H3588 CONJ the Lord H136 EDS hath performed H1214 his whole H3605 NMS work H4639 upon mount H2022 Zion H6726 and on Jerusalem H3389 , I will punish H6485 the fruit H6529 NMS of the stout H1433 heart H3824 of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , and H5921 PREP the glory H8597 of his high H7312 looks H5869 .
13 For H3588 CONJ he saith H559 VQQ3MS , By the strength H3581 B-NMS of my hand H3027 CFS-1MS I have done H6213 VQQ1MS it , and by my wisdom H2451 ; for H3588 CONJ I am prudent H995 : and I have removed H5493 the bounds H1367 of the people H5971 NMP , and have robbed H8154 their treasures H6259 , and I have put down H3381 the inhabitants H3427 like a valiant H47 man :
14 And my hand H3027 CFS-1MS hath found H4672 as a nest H7064 the riches H2428 of the people H5971 : and as one gathereth H622 eggs H1000 that are left H5800 , have I H589 PPRO-1MS gathered H622 all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS ; and there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 W-NPAR that moved H5074 VQPMS the wing H3671 GFS , or opened H6475 the mouth H6310 , or peeped H6850 .
15 Shall the axe H1631 boast itself H6286 against H5921 PREP him that heweth H2672 therewith ? or shall the saw H4883 magnify itself H1431 against H5921 PREP him that shaketh H5130 it ? as if the rod H7626 CMS should shake itself against H5130 them that lift it up H7311 , or as if the staff H4294 should lift up H7311 itself , as if it were no H3808 NADV wood H6086 NMS .
16 Therefore H3651 L-ADV shall the Lord H113 , the Lord H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , send H7971 among his fat ones H4924 leanness H7332 ; and under H8478 his glory H3519 he shall kindle H3344 a burning H3350 like the burning H3350 of a fire H784 NMS .
17 And the light H216 NMS of Israel H3478 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS for a fire H784 , and his Holy One H6918 for a flame H3852 : and it shall burn H1197 and devour H398 his thorns H7898 and his briers H8068 in one H259 ONUM day H3117 B-NMS ;
18 And shall consume H3615 the glory H3519 of his forest H3293 , and of his fruitful field H3759 , both soul H5315 and body H1320 NMS : and they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS as when a standard H5263 - bearer fainteth H4549 .
19 And the rest H7605 of the trees H6086 NMS of his forest H3293 shall be H1961 few H4557 NMS , that a child H5288 may write H3789 them .
20 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , that the remnant H7605 of Israel H3478 , and such as are escaped H6413 of the house H1004 of Jacob H3290 , shall no H3808 ADV more H5750 ADV again H3254 stay H8172 upon H5921 PREP him that smote H5221 them ; but shall stay H8172 upon H5921 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 , in truth H571 .
21 The remnant H7605 shall return H7725 VQY3MS , even the remnant H7605 of Jacob H3290 , unto H413 PREP the mighty H1368 God H410 EDS .
22 For H3588 CONJ though H518 PART thy people H5971 Israel H3478 be H1961 VQY3MS as the sand H2344 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , yet a remnant H7605 of them shall return H7725 VQY3MS : the consumption H3631 decreed H2782 shall overflow H7857 with righteousness H6666 .
23 For H3588 CONJ the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 of hosts H6635 shall make H6213 VQPMS a consumption H3617 , even determined H2782 , in the midst H7130 of all H3605 NMS the land H776 D-GFS .
24 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 of hosts H6635 , O my people H5971 that dwellest H3427 VQPMS in Zion H6726 , be not H408 NPAR afraid H3372 of the Assyrian H804 : he shall smite H5221 thee with a rod H7626 , and shall lift up H5375 his staff H4294 against H5921 PREP-2MS thee , after the manner H1870 B-NMS of Egypt H4714 .
25 For H3588 CONJ yet H5750 ADV a very H4213 little H4592 AMS while , and the indignation H2195 shall cease H3615 , and mine anger H639 in H5921 PREP their destruction H8399 .
26 And the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 shall stir up H5782 a scourge H7752 NMS for H5921 PREP-3MS him according to the slaughter H4347 of Midian H4080 at the rock H6697 of Oreb H6159 : and as his rod H4294 was upon H5921 PREP-3MS the sea H3220 D-NMS , so shall he lift it up H5375 after the manner H1870 B-NMS of Egypt H4714 .
27 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , that his burden H5448 shall be taken away H5493 VQY3MS from off H5921 M-PREP thy shoulder H7926 , and his yoke H5923 from off H5921 M-PREP thy neck H6677 NMS-2MS , and the yoke H5923 shall be destroyed H2254 because H6440 M-CMP of the anointing H8081 CMS .
28 He is come H935 VQPMS to H5921 PREP Aiath H5857 , he is passed H5674 VQQ3MS to Migron H4051 ; at Michmash H4363 he hath laid up H6485 his carriages H3627 :
29 They are gone over H5674 the passage H4569 : they have taken up their lodging H4411 at Geba H1387 ; Ramah H7414 is afraid H2729 ; Gibeah H1390 of Saul H7586 is fled H5127 .
30 Lift up H6670 thy voice H6963 , O daughter H1323 CFS of Gallim H1554 : cause it to be heard H7181 unto Laish H3919 , O poor H6041 Anathoth H6068 .
31 Madmenah H4088 is removed H5074 ; the inhabitants H3427 of Gebim H1374 gather themselves to flee H5756 .
32 As yet H5750 ADV shall he remain H5975 at Nob H5011 that day H3117 D-AMS : he shall shake H5130 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS against the mount H2022 CMS of the daughter H1004 of Zion H6726 , the hill H1389 of Jerusalem H3389 .
33 Behold H2009 IJEC , the Lord H113 , the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , shall lop H5586 the bough H6288 with terror H4637 : and the high ones H7312 of stature H6967 shall be hewn down H1438 , and the haughty H1364 shall be humbled H8213 .
34 And he shall cut down H5362 the thickets H5442 of the forest H3293 with iron H1270 , and Lebanon H3844 shall fall H5307 by a mighty one H117 .
