Hosea 10:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 How prosperous Israel is-- a luxuriant vine loaded with fruit. But the richer the people get, the more pagan altars they build. The more bountiful their harvests, the more beautiful their sacred pillars.
2 The hearts of the people are fickle; they are guilty and must be punished. The LORD will break down their altars and smash their sacred pillars.
3 Then they will say, "We have no king because we didn't fear the LORD. But even if we had a king, what could he do for us anyway?"
4 They spout empty words and make covenants they don't intend to keep. So injustice springs up among them like poisonous weeds in a farmer's field.
5 The people of Samaria tremble in fear for what might happen to their calf idol at Beth-aven. The people mourn and the priests wail, because its glory will be stripped away.
6 This idol will be carted away to Assyria, a gift to the great king there. Ephraim will be ridiculed and Israel will be shamed, because its people have trusted in this idol.
7 Samaria and its king will be cut off; they will float away like driftwood on an ocean wave.
8 And the pagan shrines of Aven, the place of Israel's sin, will crumble. Thorns and thistles will grow up around their altars. They will beg the mountains, "Bury us!" and plead with the hills, "Fall on us!"
9 The LORD says, "O Israel, ever since Gibeah, there has been only sin and more sin! You have made no progress whatsoever. Was it not right that the wicked men of Gibeah were attacked?
10 Now whenever it fits my plan, I will attack you, too. I will call out the armies of the nations to punish you for your multiplied sins.
11 "Israel is like a trained heifer treading out the grain-- an easy job she loves. But I will put a heavy yoke on her tender neck. I will force Judah to pull the plow and Israel to break up the hard ground.
12 I said, 'Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.'
13 "But you have cultivated wickedness and harvested a thriving crop of sins. You have eaten the fruit of lies-- trusting in your military might, believing that great armies could make your nation safe.
14 Now the terrors of war will rise among your people. All your fortifications will fall, just as when Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel. Even mothers and children were dashed to death there.
15 You will share that fate, Bethel, because of your great wickedness. When the day of judgment dawns, the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

2 Their heart H3820 CMS-3MP is divided H2505 VQQ3MS ; now H6258 ADV shall they be found faulty H816 : he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall break down H6202 their altars H4196 , he shall spoil H7703 their images H4676 .
3 For H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV they shall say H559 , We have no H369 NPAR king H4428 NMS , because H3588 CONJ we feared H3372 not H3808 NADV the LORD H3068 EDS ; what H4100 IPRO then should a king H4428 NMS do H6213 to us ?
4 They have spoken H1696 words H1697 , swearing H422 falsely H7723 NMS in making H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS : thus judgment H4941 NMS springeth up H6524 as hemlock H7219 in H5921 PREP the furrows H8525 of the field H7704 .
5 The inhabitants H7934 of Samaria H8111 shall fear H1481 VQY3MP because of the calves H5697 of Beth H1007 - aven : for H3588 CONJ the people H5971 thereof shall mourn H56 over H5921 PREP-3MS it , and the priests H3649 thereof that rejoiced H1523 on H5921 PREP-3MS it , for H5921 PREP-3MS the glory H3519 thereof , because H3588 CONJ it is departed H1540 from H4480 M-PREP-3MS it .
6 It shall be also H1571 CONJ carried H2986 VOY3MS unto Assyria H804 for a present H4503 NFS to king H4428 L-CMS Jareb H3377 : Ephraim H669 shall receive H3947 shame H1317 , and Israel H3478 shall be ashamed H954 of his own counsel H6098 .
7 As for Samaria H8111 , her king H4428 is cut off H1820 as the foam H7110 upon H5921 PREP the water H4325 NMP .
8 The high places H1116 also of Aven H206 , the sin H2403 of Israel H3478 , shall be destroyed H8045 : the thorn H6975 and the thistle H1863 W-NMS shall come up H5927 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP their altars H4196 ; and they shall say H559 W-VQQ3MP to the mountains H2022 , Cover H3680 us ; and to the hills H1389 , Fall H5307 on H5921 PREP us .
9 O Israel H3478 , thou hast sinned H2398 VQQ2MS from the days H3117 of Gibeah H1390 : there H8033 ADV they stood H5975 : the battle H4421 NFS in Gibeah H1390 against H5921 PREP the children H1121 of iniquity H5932 did not H3808 ADV overtake H5381 them .
10 It is in my desire H185 that I should chastise H3256 them ; and the people H5971 NMP shall be gathered H622 against H5921 PREP-3MP them , when they shall bind H631 themselves in their two H8147 furrows H5869 .
11 And Ephraim H669 is as a heifer H5697 that is taught H3925 , and loveth H157 to tread out H1758 the corn ; but I H589 W-PPRO-1MS passed over H5674 upon H5921 PREP her fair H2898 neck H6677 : I will make Ephraim H669 to ride H7392 ; Judah H3063 shall plow H2790 , and Jacob H3290 shall break his clods H7702 .
12 Sow H2232 to yourselves in righteousness H6666 , reap H7114 in H6310 L-CMS mercy H2617 NMS ; break up H5214 your fallow ground H5215 : for it is time H6256 to seek H1875 the LORD H3068 EDS , till H5704 PREP he come H935 VQY3MS and rain H3384 righteousness H6664 NMS upon you .
13 Ye have plowed H2790 wickedness H7562 NMS , ye have reaped H7114 iniquity H5766 ; ye have eaten H398 the fruit H6529 NMS of lies H3585 : because H3588 CONJ thou didst trust H982 in thy way H1870 , in the multitude H7230 of thy mighty men H1368 .
14 Therefore shall a tumult H7588 arise H6965 among thy people H5971 , and all H3605 W-CMS thy fortresses H4013 shall be spoiled H7703 , as Shalman H8020 spoiled H7701 Beth H1009 - arbel in the day H3117 B-NMS of battle H4421 NFS : the mother H517 GFS was dashed in pieces H7376 upon H5921 PREP her children H1121 NMP .
15 So H3602 ADV shall Bethel H1008 LFS do H6213 VQQ3MS unto you because H6440 M-CMP of your great wickedness H7451 CFS : in a morning H7837 shall the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS utterly be cut off H1820 .
