Genesis 30:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 When Rachel saw that she wasn't having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!"
2 Then Jacob became furious with Rachel. "Am I God?" he asked. "He's the one who has kept you from having children!"
3 Then Rachel told him, "Take my maid, Bilhah, and sleep with her. She will bear children for me, and through her I can have a family, too."
4 So Rachel gave her servant, Bilhah, to Jacob as a wife, and he slept with her.
5 Bilhah became pregnant and presented him with a son.
6 Rachel named him Dan, for she said, "God has vindicated me! He has heard my request and given me a son."
7 Then Bilhah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a second son.
8 Rachel named him Naphtali, for she said, "I have struggled hard with my sister, and I'm winning!"
9 Meanwhile, Leah realized that she wasn't getting pregnant anymore, so she took her servant, Zilpah, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
10 Soon Zilpah presented him with a son.
11 Leah named him Gad, for she said, "How fortunate I am!"
12 Then Zilpah gave Jacob a second son.
13 And Leah named him Asher, for she said, "What joy is mine! Now the other women will celebrate with me."
14 One day during the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes growing in a field and brought them to his mother, Leah. Rachel begged Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."
15 But Leah angrily replied, "Wasn't it enough that you stole my husband? Now will you steal my son's mandrakes, too?" Rachel answered, "I will let Jacob sleep with you tonight if you give me some of the mandrakes."
16 So that evening, as Jacob was coming home from the fields, Leah went out to meet him. "You must come and sleep with me tonight!" she said. "I have paid for you with some mandrakes that my son found." So that night he slept with Leah.
17 And God answered Leah's prayers. She became pregnant again and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob.
18 She named him Issachar, for she said, "God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband as a wife."
19 Then Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob.
20 She named him Zebulun, for she said, "God has given me a good reward. Now my husband will treat me with respect, for I have given him six sons."
21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Then God remembered Rachel's plight and answered her prayers by enabling her to have children.
23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. "God has removed my disgrace," she said.
24 And she named him Joseph, for she said, "May the LORD add yet another son to my family."
25 Soon after Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Please release me so I can go home to my own country.
26 Let me take my wives and children, for I have earned them by serving you, and let me be on my way. You certainly know how hard I have worked for you."
27 "Please listen to me," Laban replied. "I have become wealthy, for the LORD has blessed me because of you.
28 Tell me how much I owe you. Whatever it is, I'll pay it."
29 Jacob replied, "You know how hard I've worked for you, and how your flocks and herds have grown under my care.
30 You had little indeed before I came, but your wealth has increased enormously. The LORD has blessed you through everything I've done. But now, what about me? When can I start providing for my own family?"
31 "What wages do you want?" Laban asked again.Jacob replied, "Don't give me anything. Just do this one thing, and I'll continue to tend and watch over your flocks.
32 Let me inspect your flocks today and remove all the sheep and goats that are speckled or spotted, along with all the black sheep. Give these to me as my wages.
33 In the future, when you check on the animals you have given me as my wages, you'll see that I have been honest. If you find in my flock any goats without speckles or spots, or any sheep that are not black, you will know that I have stolen them from you."
34 "All right," Laban replied. "It will be as you say."
35 But that very day Laban went out and removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, all the female goats that were speckled and spotted or had white patches, and all the black sheep. He placed them in the care of his own sons,
36 who took them a three-days' journey from where Jacob was. Meanwhile, Jacob stayed and cared for the rest of Laban's flock.
37 Then Jacob took some fresh branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees and peeled off strips of bark, making white streaks on them.
38 Then he placed these peeled branches in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, for that was where they mated.
39 And when they mated in front of the white-streaked branches, they gave birth to young that were streaked, speckled, and spotted.
40 Jacob separated those lambs from Laban's flock. And at mating time he turned the flock to face Laban's animals that were streaked or black. This is how he built his own flock instead of increasing Laban's.
41 Whenever the stronger females were ready to mate, Jacob would place the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of them. Then they would mate in front of the branches.
42 But he didn't do this with the weaker ones, so the weaker lambs belonged to Laban, and the stronger ones were Jacob's.
43 As a result, Jacob became very wealthy, with large flocks of sheep and goats, male and female servants, and many camels and donkeys.

2 And Jacob H3290 \'s anger H639 CMS was kindled H2734 against Rachel H7354 : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Am I H595 PPRO-1MS in God H430 EDP \'s stead H8478 , who H834 RPRO hath withheld H4513 from H4480 thee the fruit H6529 NMS of the womb H990 ?
3 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS , Behold H2009 IJEC my maid H519 Bilhah H1090 , go in H935 unto H413 PREP-3FS her ; and she shall bear H3205 upon H5921 PREP my knees H1290 , that I H595 PPRO-1MS may also H1571 CONJ have children H1129 by H4480 PREP-3FS her .
4 And she gave H5414 him Bilhah H1090 her handmaid H8198 to wife H802 L-NFS : and Jacob H3290 went in H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her .
5 And Bilhah H1090 conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 a son H1121 NMS .
6 And Rachel H7354 said H559 W-VQY3FS , God H430 EDP hath judged H1777 me , and hath also H1571 W-CONJ heard H8085 my voice H6963 , and hath given H5414 W-VQY3MS me a son H1121 NMS : therefore H3651 ADV called H7121 she his name H8034 CMS-3MS Dan H1835 EFS .
7 And Bilhah H1090 Rachel H7354 \'s maid H8198 conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS again H5750 ADV , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 a second H8145 son H1121 NMS .
8 And Rachel H7354 said H559 W-VQY3FS , With great H430 EDP wrestlings H5319 have I wrestled H6617 with H5973 PREP my sister H269 CFS-1MS , and H1571 CONJ I have prevailed H3201 : and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Naphtali H5321 .
9 When Leah H3812 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS that H3588 CONJ she had left H5975 bearing H3205 , she took H3947 W-VQY3FS Zilpah H2153 her maid H8198 , and gave H5414 W-VQY3FS her Jacob H3290 to wife H802 .
10 And Zilpah H2153 Leah H3812 \'s maid H8198 bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 a son H1121 NMS .
11 And Leah H3812 said H559 W-VQY3FS , A troop cometh H1413 : and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Gad H1410 .
12 And Zilpah H2153 Leah H3812 \'s maid H8198 bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 a second H8145 son H1121 NMS .
13 And Leah H3812 said H559 W-VQY3FS , Happy H837 am I , for H3588 CONJ the daughters H1323 will call me blessed H833 : and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Asher H836 .
14 And Reuben H7205 went H1980 W-VQY3MS in the days H3117 B-CMP of wheat H2406 harvest H7105 , and found H4672 W-VQY3MS mandrakes H1736 in the field H7704 B-NMS , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS them unto H413 PREP his mother H517 GFS-3MS Leah H3812 . Then Rachel H7354 said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Leah H3812 , Give H5414 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , of thy son H1121 \'s mandrakes H1736 .
15 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto her , Is it a small matter H4592 D-AMS that thou hast taken H3947 my husband H376 ? and wouldest thou take away H3947 my son H1121 NMS-1MS \'s mandrakes H1736 also H1571 CONJ ? And Rachel H7354 said H559 W-VQY3FS , Therefore H3651 L-ADV he shall lie H7901 VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee tonight H3915 D-AMS for H8478 NMS thy son H1121 NMS-1MS \'s mandrakes H1736 .
16 And Jacob H3290 came H935 VQY2MS out of H4480 PREP the field H7704 D-NMS in the evening H6153 , and Leah H3812 went out H3318 to meet H7125 L-VQFC-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , Thou must come in H935 VQY2MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me ; for H3588 CONJ surely I have hired H7936 thee with my son H1121 NMS-1MS \'s mandrakes H1736 . And he lay H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-3FS her that H1931 PPRO-3MS night H3915 .
17 And God H430 EDP hearkened H8085 unto H413 PREP Leah H3812 , and she conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 the fifth H2549 ONUM son H1121 NMS .
18 And Leah H3812 said H559 W-VQY3FS , God H430 EDP hath given H5414 VQQ3MS me my hire H7939 , because H834 RPRO I have given H5414 VQQ1MS my maiden H8198 to my husband H376 : and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Issachar H3485 .
19 And Leah H3812 conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS again H5750 ADV , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS Jacob H3290 the sixth H8345 son H1121 NMS .
20 And Leah H3812 said H559 W-VQY3FS , God H430 EDP hath endued H2064 me with a good H2896 AMS dowry H2065 ; now H6471 D-GFS will my husband H376 dwell with H2082 me , because H3588 CONJ I have born H3205 him six H8337 sons H1121 NMP : and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Zebulun H2074 .
21 And afterwards H310 W-ADV she bore H3205 a daughter H1323 CFS , and called H7121 W-VQY2MS her name H8034 CMS-3FS Dinah H1783 .
22 And God H430 EDP remembered H2142 W-VQY3MS Rachel H7354 , and God H430 EDP hearkened H8085 to H413 PREP-3FS her , and opened H6605 W-VQY3MS her womb H7358 .
23 And she conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS a son H1121 NMS ; and said H559 W-VQY3FS , God H430 EDP hath taken away H622 my reproach H2781 :
24 And she called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Joseph H3130 ; and said H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS shall add H3254 to me another H312 son H1121 NMS .
25 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H834 K-RPRO Rachel H7354 had born H3205 Joseph H3130 , that Jacob H3290 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Laban H3837 , Send me away H7971 , that I may go H1980 unto H413 PREP mine own place H4725 , and to my country H776 .
26 Give H5414 me my wives H802 and my children H3206 , for whom H834 RPRO I have served H5647 thee , and let me go H1980 : for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS my service H5656 which H834 RPRO I have done H5647 thee .
27 And Laban H3837 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , if H518 PART I have found H4672 VQQ1MS favor H2580 NMS in thine eyes H5869 , tarry : for I have learned by experience H5172 that the LORD H3068 EDS hath blessed H1288 me for thy sake H1558 .
28 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Appoint H5921 PREP-1MS me thy wages H7939 , and I will give H5414 it .
29 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS how H834 RPRO I have served H5647 thee , and how H834 RPRO thy cattle H4735 was H1961 VQQ3MS with H854 me .
30 For H3588 CONJ it was little H4592 AMS which H834 RPRO thou hadst H1961 VQQ3MS before H6440 L-CMP I came , and it is now increased H6555 unto a multitude H7230 LD-NMS ; and the LORD H3068 EDS hath blessed H1288 W-VNY3MS thee since my coming H7272 : and now H6258 W-ADV when H4970 IGAT shall I H595 PPRO-1MS provide H6213 for mine own house H1004 also H1571 CONJ ?
31 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IGAT shall I give H5414 thee ? And Jacob H3290 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV give H5414 me any thing H3972 NMS : if H518 PART thou wilt do H6213 VQY2MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS for me , I will again H7725 feed H7462 and keep H8104 thy flock H6629 :
32 I will pass through H5674 all H3605 NMS thy flock H6629 today H3117 D-AMS , removing H5493 from thence H8033 M-ADV all H3605 NMS the speckled H5348 and spotted H2921 cattle H7716 , and all H3605 NMS the brown H2345 cattle H7716 among the sheep H3775 , and the spotted H2921 and speckled H5348 among the goats H5795 : and of such shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS my hire H7939 .
33 So shall my righteousness H6666 answer H6030 for me in time H3117 B-NMS to come H4279 NMS , when H3588 CONJ it shall come H935 VQY3FS for H5921 PREP my hire H7939 before thy face H6440 L-CMP-2MS : every one H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO is not H369 speckled H5348 and spotted H2921 among the goats H5795 , and brown H2345 among the sheep H3775 , that H1931 PPRO-3MS shall be counted stolen H1589 with H854 me .
34 And Laban H3837 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2005 IJEC , I would H3863 CONJ it might be H1961 VPY3MS according to thy word H1697 .
35 And he removed H5493 W-VHY3MS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS the he goats H8495 that were ringstreaked H6124 and spotted H2921 , and all H3605 NMS the she goats H5795 that were speckled H5348 and spotted H2921 , and every one H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO had some white H3836 in it , and all H3605 NMS the brown H2345 among the sheep H3775 , and gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of his sons H1121 .
36 And he set H7760 W-VQY3MS three H7969 BMS days H3117 NMP \' journey H1870 NMS between H996 W-PREP himself and Jacob H3290 : and Jacob H3290 fed H7462 VQPMS the rest H3498 of Laban H3837 \'s flocks H6629 NMS .
37 And Jacob H3290 took H3947 W-VQY3MS him rods H4731 of green H3892 poplar H3839 , and of the hazel H3869 and chestnut tree H6196 ; and peeled H6478 white H3836 streaks H6479 in them H2004 , and made the white H3836 appear H4286 which H834 RPRO was in H5921 PREP the rods H4731 .
38 And he set H3322 the rods H4731 which H834 RPRO he had peeled H6478 before H5227 the flocks H6629 in the gutters H7298 in the watering H4325 D-OMD troughs H8268 when H834 RPRO the flocks H6629 came H935 to drink H8354 , that they should conceive H3179 when they came H935 to drink H8354 .
39 And the flocks H6629 conceived H3179 before H413 PREP the rods H4731 , and brought forth H3205 cattle H6629 ringstreaked H6124 , speckled H5348 , and spotted H2921 .
40 And Jacob H3290 did separate H6504 the lambs H3775 , and set H5414 W-VQQ3MS the faces H6440 CMP of the flocks H6629 toward H413 PREP the ringstreaked H6124 , and all H3605 W-CMS the brown H2345 in the flock H6629 of Laban H3837 ; and he put H7896 his own flocks H5739 by themselves H905 L-CMS-3MS , and put H7896 them not H3808 W-NPAR unto H5921 PREP Laban H3837 \'s cattle H6629 NMS .
41 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , whensoever H3605 B-CMS the stronger H7194 cattle H6629 did conceive H3179 , that Jacob H3290 laid H7760 the rods H4731 before the eyes H5869 of the cattle H6629 in the gutters H7298 , that they might conceive H3179 among the rods H4731 .
42 But when the cattle H6629 were feeble H5848 , he put H7760 VQY3MS them not H3808 NADV in : so the feebler H5848 were H1961 W-VQQ3MS Laban H3837 \'s , and the stronger H7194 Jacob H3290 \'s .
43 And the man H376 D-NMS increased H6555 exceedingly H3966 ADV , and had H1961 W-VPY3MS much H7227 AFP cattle H6629 NMS , and maidservants H8198 , and menservants H5650 W-NMP , and camels H1581 , and asses H2543 .
