2 Samuel 2:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 After this, David asked the LORD, "Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?" "Yes," the LORD replied.Then David asked, "Which town should I go to?" "To Hebron," the LORD answered.
2 David's two wives were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel. So David and his wives
3 and his men and their families all moved to Judah, and they settled in the villages near Hebron.
4 Then the men of Judah came to David and crowned him king over the people of Judah.When David heard that the men of Jabesh-gilead had buried Saul,
5 he sent them this message: "May the LORD bless you for being so loyal to your master Saul and giving him a decent burial.
6 May the LORD be loyal to you in return and reward you with his unfailing love! And I, too, will reward you for what you have done.
7 Now that Saul is dead, I ask you to be my strong and loyal subjects like the people of Judah, who have anointed me as their new king."
8 But Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had already gone to Mahanaim with Saul's son Ishbosheth.
9 There he proclaimed Ishbosheth king over Gilead, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, the land of the Ashurites, and all the rest of Israel.
10 Ishbosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he became king, and he ruled from Mahanaim for two years. Meanwhile, the people of Judah remained loyal to David.
11 David made Hebron his capital, and he ruled as king of Judah for seven and a half years.
12 One day Abner led Ishbosheth's troops from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 About the same time, Joab son of Zeruiah led David's troops out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. The two groups sat down there, facing each other from opposite sides of the pool.
14 Then Abner suggested to Joab, "Let's have a few of our warriors fight hand to hand here in front of us." "All right," Joab agreed.
15 So twelve men were chosen to fight from each side-- twelve men of Benjamin representing Ishbosheth son of Saul, and twelve representing David.
16 Each one grabbed his opponent by the hair and thrust his sword into the other's side so that all of them died. So this place at Gibeon has been known ever since as the Field of Swords.
17 A fierce battle followed that day, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the forces of David.
18 Joab, Abishai, and Asahel-- the three sons of Zeruiah-- were among David's forces that day. Asahel could run like a gazelle,
19 and he began chasing Abner. He pursued him relentlessly, not stopping for anything.
20 When Abner looked back and saw him coming, he called out, "Is that you, Asahel?" "Yes, it is," he replied.
21 "Go fight someone else!" Abner warned. "Take on one of the younger men, and strip him of his weapons." But Asahel kept right on chasing Abner.
22 Again Abner shouted to him, "Get away from here! I don't want to kill you. How could I ever face your brother Joab again?"
23 But Asahel refused to turn back, so Abner thrust the butt end of his spear through Asahel's stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He stumbled to the ground and died there. And everyone who came by that spot stopped and stood still when they saw Asahel lying there.
24 When Joab and Abishai found out what had happened, they set out after Abner. The sun was just going down as they arrived at the hill of Ammah near Giah, along the road to the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 Abner's troops from the tribe of Benjamin regrouped there at the top of the hill to take a stand.
26 Abner shouted down to Joab, "Must we always be killing each other? Don't you realize that bitterness is the only result? When will you call off your men from chasing their Israelite brothers?"
27 Then Joab said, "God only knows what would have happened if you hadn't spoken, for we would have chased you all night if necessary."
28 So Joab blew the ram's horn, and his men stopped chasing the troops of Israel.
29 All that night Abner and his men retreated through the Jordan Valley. They crossed the Jordan River, traveling all through the morning, and didn't stop until they arrived at Mahanaim.
30 Meanwhile, Joab and his men also returned home. When Joab counted his casualties, he discovered that only 19 men were missing in addition to Asahel.
31 But 360 of Abner's men had been killed, all from the tribe of Benjamin.
32 Joab and his men took Asahel's body to Bethlehem and buried him there in his father's tomb. Then they traveled all night and reached Hebron at daybreak.

And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Go up H5927 . And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Whither H575 ADV shall I go up H5927 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Unto Hebron H2275 .
2 So David H1732 MMS went up H5927 W-VHY3MS thither H8033 ADV , and his two H8147 ONUM wives H802 also H1571 W-CONJ , Ahinoam H293 the Jezreelitess H3159 , and Abigail H26 Nabal H5037 \'s wife H802 CFS the Carmelite H3761 .
3 And his men H376 NMS that H834 RPRO were with H5973 PREP-3MS him did David H1732 bring up H5927 , every man H376 NMS with his household H1004 : and they dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in the cities H5892 B-CFP of Hebron H2275 .
4 And the men H376 CMP of Judah H3063 came H935 W-VQY3MP , and there H8033 ADV they anointed H4886 David H1732 L-NAME king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 . And they told H5046 David H1732 L-NAME , saying H559 L-VQFC , That the men H376 CMP of Jabesh H3003 - gilead were they that H834 RPRO buried H6912 Saul H7586 .
5 And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 unto H413 PREP the men H376 CMP of Jabesh H3003 - gilead , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Blessed H1288 be ye H859 PPRO-2MS of the LORD H3068 L-EDS , that H834 RPRO ye have showed H6213 this H2088 D-PMS kindness H2617 unto H5973 PREP your lord H113 , even unto H5973 PREP Saul H7586 , and have buried H6912 him .
6 And now H6258 W-ADV the LORD H3068 EDS show H6213 kindness H2617 NMS and truth H571 unto H5973 PREP-3MP you : and I H595 PPRO-1MS also H1571 W-CONJ will requite H6213 you this H2063 D-DFS kindness H2896 , because H834 RPRO ye have done H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS .
7 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV let your hands H3027 be strengthened H2388 , and be H1961 ye valiant H1121 L-CMP : for H3588 CONJ your master H113 Saul H7586 is dead H4191 , and also H1571 W-CONJ the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 have anointed H4886 me king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP-3MP them .
8 But Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 , captain H8269 of Saul H7586 \'s host H6635 NMS , took H3947 VQQ3MS Ish H378 - bosheth the son H1121 of Saul H7586 , and brought him over H5674 to Mahanaim H4266 ;
9 And made him king H4427 over H413 PREP Gilead H1568 , and over H413 PREP the Ashurites H843 , and over H413 PREP Jezreel H3157 , and over H5921 W-PREP Ephraim H669 , and over H5921 W-PREP Benjamin H1144 , and over H5921 W-PREP all H3605 Israel H3478 .
10 Ish H378 - bosheth Saul H7586 \'s son H1121 was forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS old H1121 when he began to reign H4427 over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 , and reigned H4427 two H8147 W-OFD years H8141 NFP . But H389 ADV the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 followed H1961 VQQ3MP David H1732 .
11 And the time H4557 CMS that H834 RPRO David H1732 was H1961 W-VPY3MS king H4428 NMS in Hebron H2275 B-EFS over H5921 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 was H1961 W-VPY3MS seven H7651 MFS years H8141 NFP and six H8337 months H2320 .
12 And Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 , and the servants H5650 of Ish H378 - bosheth the son H1121 of Saul H7586 , went out H3318 W-VQY3MS from Mahanaim H4266 to Gibeon H1391 .
13 And Joab H3097 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 , and the servants H5650 of David H1732 , went out H3318 , and met H6298 together H3162 ADV-3MS by H5921 PREP the pool H1295 of Gibeon H1391 : and they sat down H3427 W-VQY3MP , the one H428 PMP on the one side H2088 M-DPRO of H5921 PREP the pool H1295 , and the other H428 W-PMP on the other side H2088 of H5921 PREP the pool H1295 .
14 And Abner H74 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , Let the young men H5288 D-NMP now H4994 IJEC arise H6965 VQY3MP , and play H7832 before H6440 us . And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let them arise H6965 .
15 Then there arose H6965 and went over H5674 by number H4557 twelve H8147 of Benjamin H1144 , which pertained to Ish H378 - bosheth the son H1121 of Saul H7586 , and twelve H8147 of the servants H5650 of David H1732 .
16 And they caught H2388 every one H376 NMS his fellow H7453 NMS-3MS by the head H7218 B-NMS , and thrust his sword H2719 in his fellow H7453 NMS-3MS \'s side H6654 ; so they fell down H5307 W-VQY3MP together H3162 ADV-3MS : wherefore that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS place H4725 was called H7121 W-VQY3MS Helkath H2521 - hazzurim , which H834 RPRO is in Gibeon H1391 .
17 And there was H1961 W-VQY3FS a very H5704 PREP sore H7186 battle H4421 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS ; and Abner H74 was beaten H5062 , and the men H376 W-CMP of Israel H3478 , before H6440 L-CMP the servants H5650 of David H1732 .
18 And there H8033 ADV were H1961 W-VQY3MP three H7969 NFS sons H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 there , Joab H3097 , and Abishai H52 , and Asahel H6214 : and Asahel H6214 was as light H7031 of foot H7272 B-CFD-3MS as a H259 K-NMS wild H834 RPRO roe H6643 .
19 And Asahel H6214 pursued H7291 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP Abner H74 ; and in going H1980 L-VQFC he turned H5186 VQQ3MS not H3808 W-NPAR to H5921 PREP the right H3225 D-NFS hand nor to H5921 PREP the left H8040 from following H310 Abner H74 .
20 Then Abner H74 looked H6437 behind H310 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Art thou H859 Asahel H6214 ? And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I H595 PPRO-1MS am .
21 And Abner H74 said H559 W-VQY3MS to him , Turn thee aside H5186 to H5921 PREP thy right H3225 hand or H176 CONJ to H5921 PREP thy left H8040 , and lay thee hold H270 on one H259 MMS of the young men H5288 , and take H3947 thee his armor H2488 . But Asahel H6214 would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR turn aside H5493 from following H310 of him .
22 And Abner H74 said H559 L-VQFC again H3254 W-VHPMS to H413 PREP Asahel H6214 , Turn thee aside H5493 VQI2MS from following H310 me : wherefore H4100 L-IPRO should I smite H5221 thee to the ground H776 NFS-3FS ? how H349 W-IJEC then should I hold up H5375 VQY1MS my face H6440 CMP-1MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 thy brother H251 ?
23 Howbeit he refused H3985 to turn aside H5493 : wherefore Abner H74 with the hinder end of H310 the spear H2595 smote H5221 him under H413 PREP the fifth H2570 rib , that the spear H2595 came out H3318 behind H310 him ; and he fell down H5307 there H8033 ADV , and died H4191 W-VQY3MS in the same place H8478 PREP-3MS : and it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that as many H3605 NMS as came H935 to H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO Asahel H6214 fell down H5307 and died H4191 stood still H5975 .
24 Joab H3097 also and Abishai H52 pursued H7291 after H310 PREP Abner H74 : and the sun H8121 went down H935 VQQ3FS when they H1992 were come H935 VQQ3MP to H5704 PREP the hill H1389 of Ammah H522 , that H834 RPRO lieth before H5921 PREP Giah H1520 by the way H1870 NMS of the wilderness H4057 of Gibeon H1391 .
25 And the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 gathered themselves together H6908 after H310 PREP Abner H74 , and became H1961 W-VQY3MP one H259 MFS troop H92 , and stood H5975 on H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of a H259 hill H1389 .
26 Then Abner H74 called H7121 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Shall the sword H2719 GFS devour H398 VQY2MS forever H5331 ? knowest H3045 thou not H3808 ADV that H3588 CONJ it will be H1961 bitterness H4751 AFS in the latter end H314 ? how long H5704 W-PREP shall it be then , ere H3808 ADV thou bid H559 W-VQY3MS the people H5971 return H7725 from following H310 their brethren H251 CMP-3MP ?
27 And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS , As God H430 D-NAME-4MP liveth H2416 AMS , unless H3884 thou hadst spoken H1696 , surely H3588 CONJ then H227 ADV in the morning H1242 the people H5971 had gone up H5927 every one H376 NMS from following H310 his brother H251 CMP-3MS .
28 So Joab H3097 blew H8628 a trumpet H7782 , and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 stood H5975 still , and pursued H7291 after H310 PREP Israel H3478 no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV , neither H3808 W-NPAR fought H3898 they any more H3254 .
29 And Abner H74 and his men H376 walked H1980 all H3605 NMS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 D-AMS through the plain H6160 , and passed over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and went through H1980 W-VQY3MP all H3605 NMS Bithron H1338 , and they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Mahanaim H4266 .
30 And Joab H3097 returned H7725 VQQ3MS from following H310 Abner H74 : and when he had gathered all the people together H6908 , there lacked H6485 of David\'s servants H5650 nineteen H8672 men H376 NMS and Asahel H6214 .
31 But the servants H5650 of David H1732 had smitten H5221 VHQ3MP of Benjamin H1144 , and of Abner H74 \'s men H376 NMS , so that three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP and threescore H8346 W-MMP men H376 NMS died H4191 VQQ3MP .
32 And they took up H5375 W-VQY3MP Asahel H6214 , and buried H6912 him in the sepulcher H6913 of his father H1 CMS-3MS , which H834 RPRO was in Bethlehem H1035 . And Joab H3097 and his men H376 went H1980 W-VQY3MP all H3605 CMS night H3915 D-AMS , and they came to Hebron H2275 at break of day H215 .
