1 Kings 11:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh's daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
2 The LORD had clearly instructed the people of Israel, 'You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.' Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
3 He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the LORD.
4 In Solomon's old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the LORD his God, as his father, David, had been.
5 Solomon worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.
6 In this way, Solomon did what was evil in the LORD's sight; he refused to follow the LORD completely, as his father, David, had done.
7 On the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, he even built a pagan shrine for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and another for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.
8 Solomon built such shrines for all his foreign wives to use for burning incense and sacrificing to their gods.
9 The LORD was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
10 He had warned Solomon specifically about worshiping other gods, but Solomon did not listen to the LORD's command.
11 So now the LORD said to him, "Since you have not kept my covenant and have disobeyed my decrees, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants.
12 But for the sake of your father, David, I will not do this while you are still alive. I will take the kingdom away from your son.
13 And even so, I will not take away the entire kingdom; I will let him be king of one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city."
14 Then the LORD raised up Hadad the Edomite, a member of Edom's royal family, to be Solomon's adversary.
15 Years before, David had defeated Edom. Joab, his army commander, had stayed to bury some of the Israelite soldiers who had died in battle. While there, they killed every male in Edom.
16 Joab and the army of Israel had stayed there for six months, killing them.
17 But Hadad and a few of his father's royal officials escaped and headed for Egypt. (Hadad was just a boy at the time.)
18 They set out from Midian and went to Paran, where others joined them. Then they traveled to Egypt and went to Pharaoh, who gave them a home, food, and some land.
19 Pharaoh grew very fond of Hadad, and he gave him his wife's sister in marriage-- the sister of Queen Tahpenes.
20 She bore him a son named Genubath. Tahpenes raised him in Pharaoh's palace among Pharaoh's own sons.
21 When the news reached Hadad in Egypt that David and his commander Joab were both dead, he said to Pharaoh, "Let me return to my own country."
22 "Why?" Pharaoh asked him. "What do you lack here that makes you want to go home?" "Nothing," he replied. "But even so, please let me return home."
23 God also raised up Rezon son of Eliada as Solomon's adversary. Rezon had fled from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah,
24 and had become the leader of a gang of rebels. After David conquered Hadadezer, Rezon and his men fled to Damascus, where he became king.
25 Rezon was Israel's bitter adversary for the rest of Solomon's reign, and he made trouble, just as Hadad did. Rezon hated Israel intensely and continued to reign in Aram.
26 Another rebel leader was Jeroboam son of Nebat, one of Solomon's own officials. He came from the town of Zeredah in Ephraim, and his mother was Zeruah, a widow.
27 This is the story behind his rebellion. Solomon was rebuilding the supporting terraces and repairing the walls of the city of his father, David.
28 Jeroboam was a very capable young man, and when Solomon saw how industrious he was, he put him in charge of the labor force from the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph.
29 One day as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him along the way. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a field,
30 and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
31 Then he said to Jeroboam, "Take ten of these pieces, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give ten of the tribes to you!
32 But I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
33 For Solomon has abandoned me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and done what is pleasing in my sight. He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father did.
34 " 'But I will not take the entire kingdom from Solomon at this time. For the sake of my servant David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees, I will keep Solomon as leader for the rest of his life.
35 But I will take the kingdom away from his son and give ten of the tribes to you.
36 His son will have one tribe so that the descendants of David my servant will continue to reign, shining like a lamp in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen to be the place for my name.
37 And I will place you on the throne of Israel, and you will rule over all that your heart desires.
38 If you listen to what I tell you and follow my ways and do whatever I consider to be right, and if you obey my decrees and commands, as my servant David did, then I will always be with you. I will establish an enduring dynasty for you as I did for David, and I will give Israel to you.
39 Because of Solomon's sin I will punish the descendants of David-- though not forever.'"
40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but he fled to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until Solomon died.
41 The rest of the events in Solomon's reign, including all his deeds and his wisdom, are recorded in The Book of the Acts of Solomon.
42 Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.
43 When he died, he was buried in the City of David, named for his father. Then his son Rehoboam became the next king.

3 And he had H1961 W-VQY3MS seven H7651 hundred H3967 BFP wives H802 GFP , princesses H8282 , and three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP concubines H6370 : and his wives H802 turned away H5186 his heart H3820 CMS-3MS .
4 For it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H6256 L-CMS Solomon H8010 MMS was old H2209 , that his wives H802 turned away H5186 VHQ3MP his heart H3824 after H310 PREP other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP : and his heart H3824 was H1961 VQQ3MS not H3808 W-NPAR perfect H8003 with H5973 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 NAME-4MP , as was the heart H3824 of David H1732 his father H1 .
5 For Solomon H8010 MMS went H1980 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP Ashtoreth H6253 the goddess H430 CDP of the Zidonians H6722 , and after H310 Milcom H4445 the abomination H8251 of the Ammonites H5984 .
6 And Solomon H8010 MMS did H6213 W-VQY3MS evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and went not fully H3808 W-NPAR after H310 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , as did David H1732 his father H1 .
7 Then H227 ADV did Solomon H8010 MMS build H1129 a high place H1116 for Chemosh H3645 , the abomination H8251 of Moab H4124 , in the hill H2022 that H834 RPRO is before H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 , and for Molech H4432 , the abomination H8251 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
8 And likewise H3651 did H6213 VQQ3MS he for all H3605 L-CMS his strange H5237 wives H802 , which burnt incense H6999 and sacrificed H2076 unto their gods H430 .
9 And the LORD H3068 EDS was angry H599 with Solomon H8010 , because H3588 CONJ his heart H3824 was turned H5186 VQQ3MS from M-PREP the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , which had appeared H7200 unto H413 PREP-3MS him twice H6471 ,
10 And had commanded H6680 him concerning H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS , that he should not H1115 L-NPAR go H1980 after H310 PREP other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP : but he kept H8104 not H3808 W-NPAR that which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS .
11 Wherefore the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Solomon H8010 , Forasmuch H3282 ADV as H834 RPRO this H2063 DPRO-3FS is H1961 VQP3FS done of H5973 PREP-2FS thee , and thou hast not H3808 W-NPAR kept H8104 my covenant H1285 B-CFS-1MS and my statutes H2708 , which H834 RPRO I have commanded H6680 thee , I will surely rend H7167 the kingdom H4467 from PREP-2MS thee , and will give H5414 it to thy servant H5650 .
12 Notwithstanding H389 ADV in thy days H3117 I will not H3808 NADV do H6213 it for David thy father\'s sake H4616 L-CONJ : but I will rend H7167 it out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of thy son H1121 .
13 Howbeit H7535 ADV I will not H3808 NADV rend away H7167 all H3605 NMS the kingdom H4467 ; but will give H5414 VQY1MS one H259 MMS tribe H7626 CMS to thy son H1121 for David my servant\'s sake H4616 L-CONJ , and for Jerusalem\'s sake H4616 which H834 RPRO I have chosen H977 .
14 And the LORD H3068 EDS stirred up H6965 an adversary H7854 unto Solomon H8010 , Hadad H1908 the Edomite H130 : he H1931 PPRO-3MS was of the king\'s seed H2233 in Edom H123 .
15 For it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when David H1732 MMS was H1961 in Edom H123 , and Joab H3097 the captain H8269 of the host H6635 was gone up H5927 B-CFP to bury H6912 the slain H2491 , after he had smitten H5221 W-VHY3MS every H3605 NMS male H2145 NMS in Edom H123 ;
16 ( CONJ For CONJ six H8337 months H2320 did Joab H3097 remain H3427 there H8033 ADV with all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 , until H5704 PREP he had cut off H3772 every H3605 NMS male H2145 NMS in Edom H123 : )
17 That Hadad H111 fled H1272 W-VQY3MS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and certain H376 Edomites H129 of his father\'s servants H5650 with H854 PREP-3MS him , to go H935 L-VQFC into Egypt H4714 ; Hadad H1908 being yet a little H6996 child H5288 .
18 And they arose H6965 out of Midian H4080 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to Paran H6290 : and they took H3947 W-VQY3MP men H376 with H5973 PREP-3MP them out of Paran H6290 , and they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Egypt H4714 EFS , unto H413 PREP Pharaoh H6547 EMS king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS ; which gave H5414 W-VQY3MS him a house H1004 , and appointed H559 VQQ3MS him victuals H3899 , and gave H5414 VQQ3MS him land H776 W-NFS .
19 And Hadad H1908 found H4672 W-VQY3MS great H3966 ADV favor H2580 NMS in the sight H5869 B-CMP of Pharaoh H6547 EMS , so that he gave H5414 W-VQY3MS him to wife H802 NFS the sister H269 of his own wife H802 CFS-3MS , the sister H269 of Tahpenes H8472 the queen H1377 .
20 And the sister H269 of Tahpenes H8472 bore H3205 W-VQY3FS him Genubath H1592 his son H1121 CMS-3MS , whom Tahpenes H8472 weaned H1580 in H8432 B-NMS Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s house H1004 CMS : and Genubath H1592 was H1961 W-VQY3MS in Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s household H1004 CMS among H8432 B-NMS the sons H1121 CMS-3MS of Pharaoh H6547 .
21 And when Hadad H1908 heard H8085 in Egypt H4714 that H3588 CONJ David H1732 MMS slept H7901 VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and that H3588 CONJ Joab H3097 the captain H8269 of the host H6635 was dead H4191 , Hadad H1908 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Pharaoh H6547 EMS , Let me depart H7971 , that I may go H1980 to H413 PREP mine own country H776 .
22 Then Pharaoh H6547 EMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , But H3588 CONJ what H4100 IGAT hast thou H859 PPRO-2MS lacked H2638 with H5973 me , that , behold H2009 , thou seekest H1245 to go H1980 L-VQFC to H413 PREP thine own country H776 NFS-2MS ? And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Nothing H3808 NPAR : howbeit H3588 CONJ let me go in any wise H7971 .
23 And God H430 EDP stirred him up H6965 another adversary H7854 , Rezon H7331 the son H1121 of Eliadah H450 , which H834 RPRO fled H1272 from his lord H113 Hadadezer H1909 king H4428 NMS of Zobah H6678 :
24 And he gathered H6908 men H376 NMP unto H5921 PREP-3MS him , and became H1961 W-VQY3MS captain H8269 over a band H1416 , when David H1732 MMS slew H2026 them of Zobah : and they went H1980 W-VQY3MP to Damascus H1834 , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP therein , and reigned H4427 in Damascus H1834 .
25 And he was H1961 W-VQY3MS an adversary H7854 to Israel H3478 all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of Solomon H8010 MMS , beside H854 W-PART the mischief H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO Hadad H1908 did : and he abhorred H6973 Israel H3478 , and reigned H4427 over H5921 PREP Syria H758 .
26 And Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 , an Ephrathite H673 of H4480 PREP Zereda H6868 , Solomon H8010 \'s servant H5650 NMS , whose mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s name H8034 W-CMS was Zeruah H6871 , a widow H490 NFS woman H802 NFS , even he lifted up H7311 his hand H3027 NFS against the king H4428 .
27 And this H2088 W-PMS was the cause H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO he lifted up H7311 his hand H3027 NFS against the king H4428 : Solomon H8010 MMS built H1129 VQQ3MS Millo H4407 , and repaired H5462 VQQ3MS the breaches H6556 of the city H5892 GFS of David H1732 MMS his father H1 .
28 And the man H376 Jeroboam H3379 was a mighty H1368 AMS man of valor H2428 : and Solomon H8010 MMS seeing H7200 W-VIY3MS the young man H5288 that H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was industrious H6213 , he made him ruler H6485 over all H3605 L-CMS the charge H5447 of the house H1004 CMS of Joseph H3130 .
29 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS at that H1931 time H6256 when Jeroboam H3379 went out H3318 VQQ3MS of Jerusalem H3389 , that the prophet H5030 Ahijah H281 the Shilonite H7888 found H4672 W-VQY3MS him in the way H1870 ; and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS had clad himself H3680 with a new H2319 garment H8008 ; and they two H8147 were alone H905 L-CMS-3MP in the field H7704 :
30 And Ahijah H281 caught H8610 the new H2319 garment H8008 that H834 RPRO was on H5921 PREP-3MS him , and rent H7167 it in twelve H8147 pieces H7168 :
31 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS to Jeroboam H3379 , Take H3947 VQI2MS thee ten H6235 pieces H7168 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Behold H2009 , I will rend H7167 the kingdom H4467 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of Solomon H8010 MMS , and will give H5414 ten H6235 tribes H7626 to thee :
32 (But he shall have H1961 VQY3MS one H259 tribe H7626 for my servant David\'s sake H4616 L-CONJ , and for Jerusalem\'s sake H4616 , the city H5892 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I have chosen H977 out of all H3605 M-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 LMS : )
33 Because H3282 ADV that H834 RPRO they have forsaken H5800 me , and have worshiped H7812 Ashtoreth H6253 the goddess H430 CDP of the Zidonians H6721 , Chemosh H3645 the god H430 CDP of the Moabites H4124 , and Milcom H4445 the god H430 CDP of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , and have not H3808 W-NPAR walked H1980 VQQ3MP in my ways H1870 , to do H6213 L-VQFC that which is right H3477 in mine eyes H5869 , and to keep my statutes H2708 and my judgments H4941 , as did David H1732 his father H1 .
34 Howbeit I will not H3808 W-NPAR take H3947 VQY1MS the whole H3605 NMS kingdom H4467 out of his hand H3027 M-CFS-3MS : but H3588 CONJ I will make H7896 him prince H5387 all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of his life H2416 for David my servant\'s sake H4616 L-CONJ , whom H834 RPRO I chose H977 , because H834 RPRO he kept H8104 my commandments H4687 and my statutes H2708 :
35 But I will take H3947 the kingdom H4410 out of his son\'s hand H3027 M-GFS , and will give H5414 it unto thee , even ten H6235 tribes H7626 .
36 And unto his son H1121 will I give H5414 VQY1MS one H259 MMS tribe H7626 , that H4616 L-CONJ David H1732 my servant H5650 CMS-1MS may have H1961 a light H5216 always H3605 CMS before H6440 L-CMP me in Jerusalem H3389 , the city H5892 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I have chosen H977 me to put H7760 L-VQFC my name H8034 there H8033 ADV .
37 And I will take H3947 VQY1MS thee , and thou shalt reign H4427 according to all H3605 that H834 RPRO thy soul H5315 desireth H183 , and shalt be H1961 W-VQQ2MS king H4428 over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
38 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , if H518 PART thou wilt hearken unto H8085 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO I command H6680 thee , and wilt walk H1980 in my ways H1870 , and do H6213 that is right H3477 in my sight H5869 , to keep H8104 my statutes H2708 and my commandments H4687 W-CFP-1MS , as H834 RPRO David H1732 L-NAME my servant H5650 CMS-1MS did H6213 VQQ3MS ; that I will be H1961 W-VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee , and build H1129 thee a sure H539 house H1004 , as H834 RPRO I built H1129 for David H1732 L-NAME , and will give H5414 Israel H3478 LMS unto thee .
39 And I will for H4616 L-CONJ this H2063 DPRO afflict H6031 the seed H2233 NMS of David H1732 MMS , but H389 ADV not H3808 NADV forever H3117 D-NMP .
40 Solomon H8010 MMS sought H1245 therefore to kill H4191 Jeroboam H3379 . And Jeroboam H3379 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and fled H1272 W-VQY3MS into Egypt H4714 EFS , unto H413 PREP Shishak H7895 king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS , and was H1961 W-VQY3MS in Egypt H4714 until H5704 PREP the death H4194 of Solomon H8010 .
41 And the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Solomon H8010 MMS , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS , and his wisdom H2451 , are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the acts H1697 CMP of Solomon H8010 ?
42 And the time H3117 that H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 MMS reigned H4427 in Jerusalem H3389 over H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 was forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS .
43 And Solomon H8010 MMS slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and was buried H6912 in the city H5892 of David H1732 MMS his father H1 CMS-3MS : and Rehoboam H7346 his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
