Zephaniah 1:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 The LORD gave this message to Zephaniah when Josiah son of Amon was king of Judah. Zephaniah was the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah.
2 "I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth," says the LORD.
3 "I will sweep away people and animals alike. I will sweep away the birds of the sky and the fish in the sea. I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble, and I will wipe humanity from the face of the earth," says the LORD.
4 "I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear.
5 For they go up to their roofs and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the LORD, but then they worship Molech, too.
6 And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the LORD's guidance or seek my blessings."
7 Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD, for the awesome day of the LORD's judgment is near. The LORD has prepared his people for a great slaughter and has chosen their executioners.
8 "On that day of judgment," says the LORD, "I will punish the leaders and princes of Judah and all those following pagan customs.
9 Yes, I will punish those who participate in pagan worship ceremonies, and those who fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.
10 "On that day," says the LORD, "a cry of alarm will come from the Fish Gate and echo throughout the New Quarter of the city. And a great crash will sound from the hills.
11 Wail in sorrow, all you who live in the market area, for all the merchants and traders will be destroyed.
12 "I will search with lanterns in Jerusalem's darkest corners to punish those who sit complacent in their sins. They think the LORD will do nothing to them, either good or bad.
13 So their property will be plundered, their homes will be ransacked. They will build new homes but never live in them. They will plant vineyards but never drink wine from them.
14 "That terrible day of the LORD is near. Swiftly it comes-- a day of bitter tears, a day when even strong men will cry out.
15 It will be a day when the LORD's anger is poured out-- a day of terrible distress and anguish, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,
16 a day of trumpet calls and battle cries. Down go the walled cities and the strongest battlements!
17 "Because you have sinned against the LORD, I will make you grope around like the blind. Your blood will be poured into the dust, and your bodies will lie rotting on the ground."
18 Your silver and gold will not save you on that day of the LORD's anger. For the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy. He will make a terrifying end of all the people on earth.

3 I will consume H5486 man H120 NMS and beast H929 W-NFS ; I will consume H5486 the fowls H5775 NMS of the heaven H8064 D-NMD , and the fishes H1709 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , and the stumblingblocks H4384 with H854 PREP the wicked H7563 D-NMP ; and I will cut off H3772 man H120 D-NMS from off H5921 M-PREP the land H127 D-NFS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
4 I will also stretch out H5186 mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS upon H5921 PREP Judah H3063 , and upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 ; and I will cut off H3772 the remnant H7605 of Baal H1168 from H4480 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and the name H8034 CMS of the Chemarims H3649 with H5973 PREP the priests H3548 ;
5 And them that worship H7812 the host H6635 of heaven H8064 D-AMP upon H5921 PREP the housetops H1406 ; and them that worship H7812 and that swear H7650 by the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and that swear H7650 by Malcham H4445 ;
6 And them that are turned back H5472 from the LORD H3068 EDS ; and those that H834 W-RPRO have not H3808 ADV sought H1245 the LORD H3068 EDS , nor H3808 W-NADV inquired H1875 for him .
7 Hold thy peace H2013 at the presence H6440 M-CMP of the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 : for H3588 CONJ the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is at hand H7138 AMS : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath prepared H3559 a sacrifice H2077 NMS , he hath bid H6942 his guests H7121 .
8 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in the day H3117 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s sacrifice H2077 NMS , that I will punish H6485 the princes H8269 , and the king H4428 D-NMS \'s children H1121 , and all H3605 NMS such as are clothed H3847 with strange H5237 apparel H4403 .
9 In the same H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS also will I punish H6485 all H3605 NMS those that leap H1801 on H5921 PREP the threshold H4670 , which fill H4390 D-VPPMP their masters H113 \' houses H1004 CMS with violence H2555 AMS and deceit H4820 .
10 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that there shall be the noise H6963 CMS of a cry H6818 from the fish H1709 gate H8179 , and a howling H3215 from H4480 PREP the second H4932 , and a great H1419 AMS crashing H7667 from the hills H1389 .
11 Howl H3213 , ye inhabitants H3427 of Maktesh H4389 , for H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS the merchant H3667 LMS people H5971 NMS are cut down H1820 ; all H3605 NMS they that bear H5187 silver H3701 are cut off H3772 .
12 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS at that H1931 time H6256 , that I will search H2664 Jerusalem H3389 with candles H5216 , and punish H6485 the men H376 D-NMP that are settled H7087 on H5921 PREP their lees H8105 : that say H559 in their heart H3824 B-CMS-3MP , The LORD H3068 EDS will not H3808 ADV do good H3190 , neither H3808 W-NADV will he do evil H7489 .
13 Therefore their goods H2428 shall become H1961 W-VQQ3MS a booty H4933 , and their houses H1004 a desolation H8077 : they shall also build H1129 houses H1004 , but not H3808 W-NPAR inhabit H3427 them ; and they shall plant H5193 vineyards H3754 , but not H3808 W-NPAR drink H8354 the wine H3196 thereof .
14 The great H1419 D-AMS day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is near H7138 AMS , it is near H7138 AMS , and hasteth H4118 greatly H3966 ADV , even the voice H6963 CMS of the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : the mighty man H1368 shall cry H6873 there H8033 ADV bitterly H4751 AMS .
15 That H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 NMS is a day H3117 NUM-MS of wrath H5678 , a day H3117 NMS of trouble H6869 NFS and distress H4691 W-NFS , a day H3117 NMS of wasteness H7722 NFS and desolation H4875 , a day H3117 NMS of darkness H2822 NMS and gloominess H653 , a day H3117 NMS of clouds H6051 NMS and thick darkness H6205 ,
16 A day H3117 NMS of the trumpet H7782 and alarm H8643 against H5921 PREP the fenced H1219 cities H5892 , and against H5921 PREP the high H1364 towers H6438 .
17 And I will bring distress H6887 upon men H120 , that they shall walk H1980 like blind men H5787 , because H3588 CONJ they have sinned H2398 against the LORD H3068 L-EDS : and their blood H1818 shall be poured out H8210 as dust H6083 , and their flesh H3894 as the dung H1561 .
18 Neither H3808 ADV their silver H3701 nor H1571 CONJ their gold H2091 shall be able H3201 VQY3MS to deliver H5337 them in the day H3117 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s wrath H5678 ; but the whole H3605 NMS land H776 D-GFS shall be devoured H398 by the fire H784 of his jealousy H7068 : for H3588 CONJ he shall make H6213 even H389 ADV a speedy H926 riddance H3617 of H854 all H3605 NMS them that dwell H3427 in the land H776 D-GFS .
