1 Samuel 25:1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Now Samuel died, and all Israel gathered for his funeral. They buried him at his house in Ramah. Then David moved down to the wilderness of Maon.
2 There was a wealthy man from Maon who owned property near the town of Carmel. He had 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats, and it was sheep-shearing time.
3 This man's name was Nabal, and his wife, Abigail, was a sensible and beautiful woman. But Nabal, a descendant of Caleb, was crude and mean in all his dealings.
4 When David heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep,
5 he sent ten of his young men to Carmel with this message for Nabal:
6 "Peace and prosperity to you, your family, and everything you own!
7 I am told that it is sheep-shearing time. While your shepherds stayed among us near Carmel, we never harmed them, and nothing was ever stolen from them.
8 Ask your own men, and they will tell you this is true. So would you be kind to us, since we have come at a time of celebration? Please share any provisions you might have on hand with us and with your friend David."
9 David's young men gave this message to Nabal in David's name, and they waited for a reply.
10 "Who is this fellow David?" Nabal sneered to the young men. "Who does this son of Jesse think he is? There are lots of servants these days who run away from their masters.
11 Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I've slaughtered for my shearers and give it to a band of outlaws who come from who knows where?"
12 So David's young men returned and told him what Nabal had said.
13 "Get your swords!" was David's reply as he strapped on his own. Then 400 men started off with David, and 200 remained behind to guard their equipment.
14 Meanwhile, one of Nabal's servants went to Abigail and told her, "David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master, but he screamed insults at them.
15 These men have been very good to us, and we never suffered any harm from them. Nothing was stolen from us the whole time they were with us.
16 In fact, day and night they were like a wall of protection to us and the sheep.
17 You need to know this and figure out what to do, for there is going to be trouble for our master and his whole family. He's so ill-tempered that no one can even talk to him!"
18 Abigail wasted no time. She quickly gathered 200 loaves of bread, two wineskins full of wine, five sheep that had been slaughtered, nearly a bushel of roasted grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 fig cakes. She packed them on donkeys
19 and said to her servants, "Go on ahead. I will follow you shortly." But she didn't tell her husband Nabal what she was doing.
20 As she was riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, she saw David and his men coming toward her.
21 David had just been saying, "A lot of good it did to help this fellow. We protected his flocks in the wilderness, and nothing he owned was lost or stolen. But he has repaid me evil for good.
22 May God strike me and kill me if even one man of his household is still alive tomorrow morning!"
23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed low before him.
24 She fell at his feet and said, "I accept all blame in this matter, my lord. Please listen to what I have to say.
25 I know Nabal is a wicked and ill-tempered man; please don't pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests. But I never even saw the young men you sent.
26 "Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, since the LORD has kept you from murdering and taking vengeance into your own hands, let all your enemies and those who try to harm you be as cursed as Nabal is.
27 And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought to you and your young men.
28 Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way. The LORD will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the LORD's battles. And you have not done wrong throughout your entire life.
29 "Even when you are chased by those who seek to kill you, your life is safe in the care of the LORD your God, secure in his treasure pouch! But the lives of your enemies will disappear like stones shot from a sling!
30 When the LORD has done all he promised and has made you leader of Israel,
31 don't let this be a blemish on your record. Then your conscience won't have to bear the staggering burden of needless bloodshed and vengeance. And when the LORD has done these great things for you, please remember me, your servant!"
32 David replied to Abigail, "Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today!
33 Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands.
34 For I swear by the LORD, the God of Israel, who has kept me from hurting you, that if you had not hurried out to meet me, not one of Nabal's men would still be alive tomorrow morning."
35 Then David accepted her present and told her, "Return home in peace. I have heard what you said. We will not kill your husband."
36 When Abigail arrived home, she found that Nabal was throwing a big party and was celebrating like a king. He was very drunk, so she didn't tell him anything about her meeting with David until dawn the next day.
37 In the morning when Nabal was sober, his wife told him what had happened. As a result he had a stroke, and he lay paralyzed on his bed like a stone.
38 About ten days later, the LORD struck him, and he died.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Praise the LORD, who has avenged the insult I received from Nabal and has kept me from doing it myself. Nabal has received the punishment for his sin." Then David sent messengers to Abigail to ask her to become his wife.
40 When the messengers arrived at Carmel, they told Abigail, "David has sent us to take you back to marry him."
41 She bowed low to the ground and responded, "I, your servant, would be happy to marry David. I would even be willing to become a slave, washing the feet of his servants!"
42 Quickly getting ready, she took along five of her servant girls as attendants, mounted her donkey, and went with David's messengers. And so she became his wife.
43 David also married Ahinoam from Jezreel, making both of them his wives.
44 Saul, meanwhile, had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to a man from Gallim named Palti son of Laish.

2 And there was a man H376 W-NMS in Maon H4584 , whose possessions H4639 were in Carmel H3760 ; and the man H376 was very H3966 ADV great H1419 AMS , and he had three H7969 thousand H505 MMP sheep H6629 NMS , and a thousand H505 W-BMS goats H5795 : and he was H1961 W-VQY3MS shearing H1494 his sheep H6629 GFS-3MS in Carmel H3760 .
3 Now the name H8034 W-CMS of the man H376 D-NMS was Nabal H5037 ; and the name H8034 W-CMS of his wife H802 CFS-3MS Abigail H26 : and she was a woman H802 of good H2896 understanding H7922 , and of a beautiful H3303 countenance H8389 : but the man H376 D-NMS was churlish H7186 and evil H7451 in his doings H4611 ; and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was of the house of Caleb H3612 .
4 And David H1732 MMS heard H8085 in the wilderness H4057 that H3588 CONJ Nabal H5037 did shear H1494 his sheep H6629 .
5 And David H1732 MMS sent out H7971 W-VQY3MS ten H6235 young men H5288 NMP , and David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the young men H5288 , Get you up H5927 to Carmel H3760 , and go H935 to H413 PREP Nabal H5037 , and greet H7592 him in my name H8034 :
6 And thus H3541 shall ye say H559 to him that liveth H2416 in prosperity , Peace H7965 NMS be both to thee H859 W-PPRO-2MS , and peace H7965 NMS be to thine house H1004 , and peace H7965 be unto all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO thou hast .
7 And now H6258 W-ADV I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS that H3588 CONJ thou hast shearers H1494 : now H6258 ADV thy shepherds H7462 which H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP with H5973 PREP-1MP us , we hurt H3637 them not H3808 NADV , neither H3808 ADV was there aught H3972 NMS missing H6485 unto them , all H3605 NMS the while H3117 CMP they were H1961 in Carmel H3760 .
8 Ask H7592 VQI2MS thy young men H5288 , and they will show H5046 thee . Wherefore let the young men H5288 D-NMP find H4672 favor H2580 NMS in thine eyes H5869 : for H3588 CONJ we come H935 in H5921 PREP a good H2896 AMS day H3117 NMS : give H5414 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , whatsoever H834 RPRO cometh H4672 VQY2MS to thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS unto thy servants H5650 , and to thy son H1121 David H1732 .
9 And when David H1732 \'s young men H5288 came H935 W-VQY3MP , they spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP to H413 PREP Nabal H5037 according to all H3605 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP in the name H8034 B-CMS of David H1732 MMS , and ceased H5117 .
10 And Nabal H5037 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS David H1732 \'s servants H5650 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 W-IPRO is David H1732 ? and who H4310 W-IPRO is the son H1121 CMS of Jesse H3448 ? there be many H7231 servants H5650 NMP now a days H3117 D-AMS that break away H6555 every man H376 NMS from M-CMP his master H113 .
11 Shall I then take H3947 my bread H3899 , and my water H4325 , and my flesh H2878 that H834 RPRO I have killed H2873 for my shearers H1494 , and give H5414 it unto men H376 , whom H834 RPRO I know H3045 VQY1MS not H3808 NADV whence H335 IPRO they H1992 be ?
12 So David H1732 \'s young men H5288 turned H2015 their way H1870 , and went again H7725 W-VUY3MP , and came H935 W-VQY3MP and told H5046 him all H3605 K-NMS those H428 sayings H1697 AMP .
13 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his men H376 NMS , Gird ye on H2296 every man H376 NMS his sword H2719 . And they girded on H2296 every man H376 NMS his sword H2719 ; and David H1732 MMS also H1571 CONJ girded on his sword H2719 : and there went up H5927 after H310 PREP David H1732 about four H702 hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS ; and two hundred H3967 W-MFD abode H3427 VQQ3MP by H5921 PREP the stuff H3627 .
14 But one H259 MMS of the young men H5288 told H5046 VHQ3MS Abigail H26 , Nabal H5037 \'s wife H802 CFS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Behold H2009 IJEC , David H1732 MMS sent H7971 VQQ3MS messengers H4397 out of the wilderness H4057 to salute H1288 our master H113 ; and he railed H5860 on them .
15 But the men H376 were very H3966 ADV good H2896 unto us , and we were not H3808 W-NPAR hurt H3637 , neither H3808 W-NPAR missed H6485 we any thing H3972 NMS , as long as NMS we were conversant H1980 with H854 PREP-3MP them , when we were H1961 in the fields H7704 :
16 They were H1961 VQQ3MP a wall H2346 unto H5921 PREP-1MP us both H1571 CONJ by night H3915 GMS and H1571 CONJ day H3119 ADV , all H3605 NMS the while H3117 CMP we were H1961 with H5973 PREP-3MP them keeping H7462 the sheep H6629 .
17 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore know H3045 and consider H7200 what H4100 IGAT thou wilt do H6213 ; for H3588 CONJ evil H7451 D-AFS is determined H3615 against H413 PREP our master H113 , and against H5921 W-PREP all H3605 NMS his household H1004 NMS-3MS : for he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS is such a son H1121 of Belial H1100 , that a man cannot speak H1696 to H413 PREP him .
18 Then Abigail H26 made haste H4116 , and took H3947 W-VQY3FS two hundred H3967 MFD loaves H3899 NMS , and two H8147 bottles H5035 of wine H3196 NMS , and five H2568 sheep H6629 NMS ready dressed H6213 , and five H2568 measures H5429 of parched H7039 corn , and a hundred H3967 clusters of raisins H6778 , and two hundred H3967 W-MFD cakes of figs H1690 , and laid H7760 them on H5921 PREP asses H2543 .
19 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto her servants H5288 , Go on H5674 before H6440 L-CMP me ; behold H2005 IJEC-1MS , I come H935 VQQ3FS after H310 you . But she told H5046 not H3808 NADV her husband H376 Nabal H5037 .
20 And it was H1961 W-VQQ3MS so , as she H1931 PPRO-3FS rode H7392 on H5921 PREP the ass H2543 , that she came down H3381 by the covert H5643 B-CMS of the hill H2022 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , David H1732 and his men H376 came down H3381 against H7125 her ; and she met H6298 them .
21 Now David H1732 had said H559 VQQ3MS , Surely H389 ADV in vain H8267 have I kept H8104 VQQ1MS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO this H2088 fellow hath in the wilderness H4057 , so that nothing H3808 W-NPAR was missed H6485 of all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO pertained unto him : and he hath requited H7725 me evil H7451 AFS for H8478 NMS good H2896 NFS .
22 So H3541 and more H3254 VHY3MS also H3541 do H6213 VQY3MS God H430 EDP unto the enemies H341 of David H1732 , if H518 PART I leave H7604 of all H3605 M-CMS that H834 RPRO pertain to him by H5704 PREP the morning light H1242 any that pisseth H8366 against the wall H7023 .
23 And when Abigail H26 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS David H1732 MMS , she hasted H4116 , and lighted H3381 off H5921 M-PREP the ass H2543 , and fell H5307 W-VQY3FS before H639 David H1732 on H5921 M-PREP her face H6440 , and bowed herself H7812 to the ground H776 GFS ,
24 And fell H5307 W-VQY3FS at H5921 PREP his feet H7272 , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , Upon me H589 PPRO-1MS , my lord H113 , upon me let this iniquity H5771 be : and let thine handmaid H519 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , speak H1696 in thine audience H241 , and hear H8085 the words H1697 CMP of thine handmaid H519 .
25 Let not H408 NPAR my lord H113 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , regard H7760 VQY3MS this H2088 D-PMS man H376 NMS of Belial H1100 , even Nabal H5037 : for H3588 CONJ as his name H8034 is , so H3651 is he H1931 PPRO-3MS ; Nabal H5037 is his name H8034 CMS-3MS , and folly H5039 is with H5973 PREP-3MS him : but I H589 thine handmaid H519 saw H7200 VQQ1MS not H3808 NADV the young men H5288 of my lord H113 , whom H834 RPRO thou didst send H7971 .
26 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , my lord H113 , as the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , and as thy soul H5315 liveth H2416 , seeing H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath withheld H4513 thee from coming H935 to shed blood H1818 , and from avenging H3467 thyself with thine own hand H3027 CFS-2MS , now H6258 W-ADV let thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS , and they that seek H1245 evil H7451 AFS to H413 PREP my lord H113 , be H1961 as Nabal H5037 .
27 And now H6258 W-ADV this H2063 D-DFS blessing H1293 which H834 RPRO thine handmaid H8198 hath brought H935 VHQ3MS unto my lord H113 , let it even be given H5414 unto the young men H5288 that follow H1980 my lord H113 .
28 I pray thee H4994 IJEC , forgive H5375 VQI2MS the trespass H6588 of thine handmaid H519 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS will certainly make H6213 my lord H113 a sure H539 house H1004 NMS ; because H3588 CONJ my lord H113 fighteth H3898 the battles H4421 of the LORD H3068 EDS , and evil H7451 hath not H3808 NADV been found H4672 VNY3FS in thee all thy days H3117 .
29 Yet a man H120 NMS is risen H6965 W-VQY3MS to pursue H7291 thee , and to seek H1245 thy soul H5315 GFS : but the soul H5315 GFS of my lord H113 shall be H1961 bound H6887 in the bundle H6872 B-NMS of life H2416 with H854 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS ; and the souls H5315 GFS of thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS , them shall he sling out H7049 , as out of the middle H8432 B-NMS of a sling H7050 .
30 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS shall have done H6213 VQY3MS to my lord H113 according to all H3605 K-NMS the good H2896 that H834 RPRO he hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS concerning H5921 PREP thee , and shall have appointed H6680 thee ruler H5057 over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 LMS ;
31 That this H2063 DPRO shall be H1961 no H3808 W-NPAR grief H6330 unto thee , nor offense H4383 of heart H3820 NMS unto my lord H113 , either that thou hast shed H8210 blood H1818 NMS causeless H2600 ADV , or that my lord H113 hath avenged H3467 himself : but when the LORD H3068 EDS shall have dealt well H3190 with my lord H113 , then remember H2142 thine handmaid H519 .
32 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to Abigail H26 , Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO sent H7971 thee this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS to meet H7125 me :
33 And blessed H1288 W-VWPMS be thy advice H2940 , and blessed H1288 be thou H859 PPRO-2FS , which H834 RPRO hast kept H3607 me this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS from coming H935 to shed blood H1818 , and from avenging H3467 myself with mine own hand H3027 CFS-1MS .
34 For in very deed H199 W-CONJ , as the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 liveth H2416 AMS , which H834 RPRO hath kept me back H4513 from hurting H7489 thee , except H3884 thou hadst hasted H4116 and come H935 to meet H7125 me , surely H3588 CONJ there had not H518 PART been left H3498 unto Nabal H5037 by H5704 PREP the morning H1242 light H216 NMS any that pisseth H8366 against the wall H7023 .
35 So David H1732 MMS received H3947 W-VQY3MS of her hand H3027 that which H834 RPRO she had brought H935 him , and said H559 VQQ3MS unto her , Go up H5927 in peace H7965 to thine house H1004 ; see H7200 , I have hearkened H8085 VQQ1MS to thy voice H6963 , and have accepted H5375 thy person H6440 .
36 And Abigail H26 came H935 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Nabal H5037 ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , he held a feast H4960 NMS in his house H1004 B-CMS-3MS , like the feast H4960 of a king H4428 D-NMS ; and Nabal H5037 \'s heart H3820 W-CMS was merry H2896 AMS within H5921 PREP-3MS him , for he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was very H5704 PREP drunken H7910 : wherefore she told H5046 him nothing H3808 W-NPAR , less H6996 AMS or more H1419 W-AMS , until H5704 PREP the morning H1242 light H216 NMS .
37 But it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 , when the wine H3196 D-NMS was gone out H3318 of Nabal H5037 , and his wife H802 CFS-3MS had told H5046 him these H428 D-DPRO-3MP things H1697 AMP , that his heart H3820 CMS-3MS died H4191 W-VQY3MS within H7130 him , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS became H1961 VQQ3MS as a stone H68 .
38 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS about ten H6235 days H3117 D-NMP after , that the LORD H3068 EDS smote H5062 Nabal H5037 , that he died H4191 W-VQY3MS .
39 And when David H1732 MMS heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Nabal H5037 was dead H4191 , he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be the LORD H3068 EDS , that H834 RPRO hath pleaded H7378 the cause H7379 NMS of my reproach H2781 from the hand H3027 M-GFS of Nabal H5037 , and hath kept H2820 his servant H5650 from evil H7451 : for the LORD H3068 EDS hath returned H7725 VHQ3MS the wickedness H7451 CFS of Nabal H5037 upon his own head H7218 . And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS and communed H1696 W-VPY3MS with Abigail H26 , to take H3947 her to him to wife H802 .
40 And when the servants H5650 of David H1732 were come H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Abigail H26 to Carmel H3760 , they spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP unto H413 PREP her , saying H559 L-VQFC , David H1732 MMS sent H7971 us unto H413 PREP thee , to take H3947 thee to him to wife H802 .
41 And she arose H6965 , and bowed herself H7812 on her face H639 NMD to the earth H776 NFS-3FS , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , Behold H2009 IJEC , let thine handmaid H519 be a servant H8198 to wash H7364 the feet H7272 of the servants H5650 of my lord H113 .
42 And Abigail H26 hasted H4116 , and arose H6965 , and rode H7392 upon H5921 PREP an ass H2543 , with five H2568 damsels H5291 CFP-3FS of hers that went H1980 after H7272 her ; and she went H1980 W-VQQ3FS after H310 PREP the messengers H4397 of David H1732 , and became H1961 W-VQY3FS his wife H802 .
43 David H1732 MMS also took H3947 VQQ3MS Ahinoam H293 of Jezreel H3157 ; and they were H1961 also H1571 CONJ both H8147 of them his wives H802 .
44 But Saul H7586 had given H5414 VQQ3MS Michal H4324 his daughter H1323 , David H1732 MMS \'s wife H802 CFS , to Phalti H6406 the son H1121 CMS of Laish H3919 , which H834 RPRO was of Gallim H1554 .
