John 19 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.
2 The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.
3 "Hail! King of the Jews!" they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.
4 Pilate went outside again and said to the people, "I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty."
5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!"
6 When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."
7 The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."
8 When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.
9 He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.
10 "Why don't you talk to me?" Pilate demanded. "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?"
11 Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."
12 Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, "If you release this man, you are no 'friend of Caesar.' Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."
13 When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha).
14 It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, "Look, here is your king!"
15 "Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him! Crucify him!" "What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked."We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back.
16 Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.
17 Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha).
18 There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
19 And Pilate posted a sign over him that read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
20 The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.
21 Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, "Change it from 'The King of the Jews' to 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Pilate replied, "No, what I have written, I have written."
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 So they said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dice for it. This fulfilled the Scripture that says, "They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing." So that is what they did.
25 Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother, and his mother's sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, "Dear woman, here is your son."
27 And he said to this disciple, "Here is your mother." And from then on this disciple took her into his home.
28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."
29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.
30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.
31 It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was the Passover). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.
32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.
33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.
34 One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
35 (This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also can believe.)
36 These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, "Not one of his bones will be broken,"
37 and "They will look on the one they pierced."
38 Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus' body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.
39 With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.
40 Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.
41 The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.
42 And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

5 Then G3767 CONJ came G1831 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM forth G1854 ADV , wearing G5409 V-PAP-NSM the G3588 T-NSM crown G4735 N-ASM of thorns G174 A-ASM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN purple G4210 A-ASN robe G2440 N-ASN . And G2532 CONJ Pilate saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Behold G2396 the G3588 T-NSM man G444 N-NSM !

8 When G3753 ADV Pilate G4091 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ heard G191 V-AAI-3S that G3588 T-ASM saying G3056 N-ASM , he was the more afraid G5399 V-AOI-3S ;

10 Then G3767 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S Pilate G4091 N-NSM unto him G846 P-DSM , Speakest G2980 V-PAI-2S thou not G3756 PRT-N unto me G1698 P-1DS ? knowest G1492 V-RAI-2S thou not G3756 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ I have G2192 V-PAI-1S power G1849 N-ASF to crucify G4717 V-AAN thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ have G2192 V-PAI-1S power G1849 N-ASF to release G630 V-AAN thee G4571 P-2AS ?

14 And G1161 CONJ it was G2258 V-IXI-3S the preparation G3904 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM passover G3957 ARAM , and G1161 CONJ about G5616 ADV the sixth G1623 A-NSF hour G5610 N-NSF : and G2532 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto the G3588 T-DPM Jews G2453 A-DPM , Behold G2396 your G3588 T-NSM King G935 N-NSM !
15 But G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM cried out G2905 V-AAI-3P , Away with G142 V-AAM-2S him , away with G142 V-AAM-2S him , crucify G4717 V-AAM-2S him G3588 T-NSM . Pilate G4091 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Shall I crucify G4717 V-FAI-1S your G3588 T-ASM King G935 N-ASM ? The G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM answered G611 V-ADI-3P , We have G2192 V-PAI-1P no G3756 PRT-N king G935 N-ASM but G1508 Caesar G2541 N-ASM .

17 And G2532 CONJ he bearing G941 V-PAP-NSM his G3588 T-ASM cross G4716 N-ASM went forth G1831 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP a place G5117 N-ASM called G3004 V-PPP-ASM the place of a skull G2898 N-GSN , which G3739 R-NSM is called G3004 V-PPI-3S in the Hebrew G1447 ADV Golgotha G1115 N-ASF :

26 When Jesus G2424 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM his mother G3384 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASM disciple G3101 N-ASM standing by G3936 V-RAP-ASM , whom G3739 R-ASM he loved G25 V-IAI-3S , he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto his G3588 T-DSF mother G3384 N-DSF , Woman G1135 N-VSF , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S thy G3588 T-NSM son G5207 N-NSM !
27 Then G1534 ADV saith G3004 V-PAI-3S he G3588 T-DSM to the G3588 T-DSM disciple G3101 N-DSM , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S thy G4675 P-2GS mother ! And G2532 CONJ from G575 PREP that G3588 T-GSF hour G5610 N-GSF that disciple G3101 N-NSM took G2983 V-2AAI-3S her G846 P-ASF unto G1519 PREP his own G2398 A-APN home .
28 After G3326 PREP this G3588 T-NSM , Jesus G2424 N-NSM knowing G1492 that G3754 CONJ all things G3956 A-NPN were now G2235 ADV accomplished G5055 V-RPI-3S , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF might be fulfilled G5048 V-APS-3S , saith G3004 V-PAI-3S , I thirst G1372 V-PAI-1S .
29 Now G3767 CONJ there was set G2749 V-INI-3S a vessel G4632 N-NSN full G3324 A-NSN of G3588 T-NPM vinegar G3690 N-GSN : and G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM filled G4130 V-AAP-NPM a sponge G4699 N-ASM with vinegar G3690 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ put it upon G4060 V-2AAP-NPM hyssop G5301 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ put G4374 V-AAI-3P it V-AAI-3P to V-AAI-3P his G3588 T-DSN mouth G4750 N-DSN .
30 When G3753 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ had received G2983 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN vinegar G3690 N-ASN , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , It is finished G5055 V-RPI-3S : and G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-ASF bowed G2827 V-AAP-NSM his head G2776 N-ASF , and gave up G3860 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN ghost G4151 N-ASN .
31 The G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM therefore G3767 CONJ , because G1893 it was G2258 V-IXI-3S the preparation G3904 N-NSF , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN bodies G4983 N-NPN should not G3361 PRT-N remain G3306 V-AAS-3S upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSM cross G4716 N-GSM on G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN sabbath day G4521 N-DSN , ( CONJ for CONJ that G3588 T-GSN sabbath G4521 N-GSN day G2250 N-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S a high day G3173 A-NSF , ) besought G2065 V-AAI-3P Pilate G4091 N-ASM that G2443 CONJ their G3588 T-NPN legs G4628 N-NPN might be broken G2608 V-2APS-3P , and G2532 CONJ that they might be taken away G142 V-APS-3P .
32 Then G3767 CONJ came G2064 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-NPM soldiers G4757 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ broke G2608 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-APN legs G4628 N-APN of the G3588 T-APN first G4413 A-GSM , and G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM other G3588 T-GSM which was crucified with G4957 V-APP-GSM him G846 P-DSM .
33 But G1161 CONJ when they came G2064 V-2AAP-NPM to G1909 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM , and G5613 ADV saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P that he G846 P-ASM was dead G2348 V-RAP-ASM already G2235 ADV , they broke G2608 V-AAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N his G3588 T-APN legs G4628 N-APN :
34 But G235 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM soldiers G4757 N-GPM with a spear G3057 N-DSF pierced G3572 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-ASF side G4125 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ forthwith G2117 came there out G1831 V-2AAI-3S blood G129 N-NSN and G2532 CONJ water G5204 N-NSN .
35 And G2532 CONJ he that saw G3708 V-RAP-NSM it bare record G3140 V-RAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF record G3141 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G228 A-NSF : and he G2548 D-NSM-C knoweth G1492 V-RAI-3S that G3754 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S true G227 A-APN , that G2443 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP might believe G4100 V-AAS-2P .
36 For G1063 CONJ these things G5023 D-NPN were done G1096 V-2ADI-3S , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF should be fulfilled G4137 V-APS-3S , A bone G3747 N-NSN-C of him G846 P-GSM shall not G3756 PRT-N be broken G4937 V-2FPI-3S .
37 And G2532 CONJ again G3825 ADV another G2087 A-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF saith G3004 V-PAI-3S , They shall look G3700 V-FDI-3P on G1519 PREP him whom G3739 R-ASM they pierced G1574 V-AAI-3P .
38 And G1161 CONJ after G3326 PREP this G3588 T-NSM Joseph G2501 N-PRI of G575 PREP Arimathaea G707 N-GSF , being G5607 V-PXP-NSM a disciple G3101 N-NSM of Jesus G2424 N-GSM , but G1161 CONJ secretly G2928 V-RPP-NSM for G3588 T-ASM fear G5401 N-ASM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM , besought G2065 V-AAI-3S Pilate G4091 N-ASM that G2443 CONJ he might take away G142 V-AAS-3S the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN of Jesus G2424 N-GSM : and G2532 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM gave G2010 V-AAI-3S him G2010 V-AAI-3S leave . 39 And G1161 CONJ there came G2064 V-2AAI-3S also G2532 CONJ Nicodemus G3530 N-NSM , which at the first came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM to G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM by night G3571 N-GSF , and brought G5342 V-PAP-NSM a mixture G3395 N-ASN of myrrh G4666 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ aloes G250 N-GSF , about G5616 a hundred G1540 A-NUI pound G3046 N-APF weight .
