1 Chronicles 21:5 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel.
2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, "Take a census of all the people of Israel-- from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north-- and bring me a report so I may know how many there are."
3 But Joab replied, "May the LORD increase the number of his people a hundred times over! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this? Are they not all your servants? Why must you cause Israel to sin?"
4 But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab traveled throughout all Israel to count the people. Then he returned to Jerusalem
5 and reported the number of people to David. There were 1,100,000 warriors in all Israel who could handle a sword, and 470,000 in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include the tribes of Levi and Benjamin in the census because he was so distressed at what the king had made him do.
7 God was very displeased with the census, and he punished Israel for it.
8 Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt for doing this foolish thing."
9 Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer. This was the message:
10 "Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I will give you three choices. Choose one of these punishments, and I will inflict it on you.'"
11 So Gad came to David and said, "These are the choices the LORD has given you.
12 You may choose three years of famine, three months of destruction by the sword of your enemies, or three days of severe plague as the angel of the LORD brings devastation throughout the land of Israel. Decide what answer I should give the LORD who sent me."
13 "I'm in a desperate situation!" David replied to Gad. "But let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great. Do not let me fall into human hands."
14 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel, and 70,000 people died as a result.
15 And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But just as the angel was preparing to destroy it, the LORD relented and said to the death angel, "Stop! That is enough!" At that moment the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth with his sword drawn, reaching out over Jerusalem. So David and the leaders of Israel put on burlap to show their deep distress and fell face down on the ground.
17 And David said to God, "I am the one who called for the census! I am the one who has sinned and done wrong! But these people are as innocent as sheep-- what have they done? O LORD my God, let your anger fall against me and my family, but do not destroy your people."
18 Then the angel of the LORD told Gad to instruct David to go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
19 So David went up to do what the LORD had commanded him through Gad.
20 Araunah, who was busy threshing wheat at the time, turned and saw the angel there. His four sons, who were with him, ran away and hid.
21 When Araunah saw David approaching, he left his threshing floor and bowed before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to Araunah, "Let me buy this threshing floor from you at its full price. Then I will build an altar to the LORD there, so that he will stop the plague."
23 "Take it, my lord the king, and use it as you wish," Araunah said to David. "I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, and the threshing boards for wood to build a fire on the altar, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give it all to you."
24 But King David replied to Araunah, "No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and give it to the LORD. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!"
25 So David gave Araunah 600 pieces of gold in payment for the threshing floor.
26 David built an altar there to the LORD and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And when David prayed, the LORD answered him by sending fire from heaven to burn up the offering on the altar.
27 Then the LORD spoke to the angel, who put the sword back into its sheath.
28 When David saw that the LORD had answered his prayer, he offered sacrifices there at Araunah's threshing floor.
29 At that time the Tabernacle of the LORD and the altar of burnt offering that Moses had made in the wilderness were located at the place of worship in Gibeon.
30 But David was not able to go there to inquire of God, because he was terrified by the drawn sword of the angel of the LORD.

2 And David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 and to H413 PREP the rulers H8269 CMP of the people H5971 , Go H1980 VQI2MP , number H5608 Israel H3478 from Beer H884 - sheba even to H5704 W-PREP Dan H1835 ; and bring H935 the number H4557 of them to H413 PREP me , that I may know H3045 it .
3 And Joab H3097 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , The LORD H3068 EDS make his people H5971 a hundred H3967 MFS times H6471 so many more H3254 as they H1992 be : but , my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS , are they not H3808 I-NADV all H3605 CMS-3MP my lord H113 \'s servants H5650 ? why H4100 L-IPRO then doth my lord H113 require H1245 this thing H2063 DPRO ? why H4100 L-IPRO will he be H1961 VQY3MS a cause of trespass H819 to Israel H3478 ?
4 Nevertheless the king H4428 D-NMS \'s word H1697 W-CMS prevailed H2388 against H5921 PREP Joab H3097 . Wherefore Joab H3097 departed H3318 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VTY3MS throughout all H3605 B-CMS Israel H3478 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to Jerusalem H3389 .
5 And Joab H3097 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS the sum H4557 CMS of the number H4662 of the people H5971 unto H413 PREP David H1732 . And all H3605 they of Israel H3478 were H1961 W-VQY3MS a thousand H505 W-BMS thousand H505 MMP and a hundred H3967 thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS that drew H8025 sword H2719 GFS : and Judah H3063 was four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP threescore and ten H7657 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS that drew H8025 sword H2719 GFS .
6 But Levi H3878 and Benjamin H1144 counted H6485 VQQ3MS he not H3808 NADV among H8432 them : for H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS \'s word H1697 CMS was abominable H8581 to Joab H3097 .
7 And God H430 D-EDP was displeased H5869 B-CMP with H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS ; therefore he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS Israel H3478 LMS .
8 And David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP God H430 D-EDP , I have sinned H2398 greatly H3966 ADV , because H834 RPRO I have done H6213 VQQ1MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS : but now H6258 W-ADV , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , do away H5674 the iniquity H5771 of thy servant H5650 ; for H3588 CONJ I have done very foolishly H5528 .
9 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Gad H1410 , David H1732 \'s seer H2374 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
10 Go H1980 VQI2MS and tell H1696 David H1732 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , I H589 PPRO-1MS offer H5186 VQPMS thee three H7969 MFS things : choose H977 thee one H259 OFS of them H1992 , that I may do H6213 it unto thee .
11 So Gad H1410 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Choose H6901 thee
12 Either H518 PART three H7969 NFS years H8141 NFP \' famine H7458 NMS ; or H518 PART three H7969 NFS months H2320 to be destroyed H5595 before H6440 M-CMP thy foes H6862 CMP-2MS , while that the sword H2719 of thine enemies H341 overtaketh H5381 thee ; or else H518 PART three H7969 NFS days H3117 NMP the sword H2719 GFS of the LORD H3068 EDS , even the pestilence H1698 , in the land H776 B-NFS , and the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS destroying H7843 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the coasts H1366 CMS of Israel H3478 . Now H6258 W-ADV therefore advise H7200 VQI2MS thyself what H4100 IGAT word H1697 I shall bring again H7725 to him that sent H7971 me .
13 And David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Gad H1410 , I am in a great strait H6887 : let me fall H5307 now H4994 IJEC into the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 EDS ; for H3588 CONJ very H3966 ADV great H7227 AMP are his mercies H7356 : but let me not H408 NPAR fall H5307 into the hand H3027 of man H120 NMS .
14 So the LORD H3068 EDS sent H5414 W-VQQ3MS pestilence H1698 upon Israel H3478 : and there fell H5307 W-VQY3MS of Israel H3478 seventy H7657 ONUM thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS .
15 And God H430 D-EDP sent H7971 W-VQY3MS an angel H4397 NMS unto Jerusalem H3389 to destroy H7843 it : and as he was destroying H7843 , the LORD H3068 EDS beheld H7200 VQQ3MS , and he repented him H5162 W-VNY3MS of H5921 PREP the evil H7451 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS to the angel H4397 that destroyed H7843 , It is enough H7227 AMS , stay H7503 now H6258 ADV thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS . And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS stood H5975 by H5973 PREP the threshingfloor H1637 of Ornan H771 the Jebusite H2983 .
16 And David H1732 lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , and saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS stand H5975 between H996 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS and the heaven H8064 D-NMD , having a drawn H8025 sword H2719 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS stretched out H5186 over H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 . Then David H1732 and the elders H2205 of Israel , who were clothed H3680 in sackcloth H8242 , fell H5307 W-VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP their faces H6440 .
17 And David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP God H430 D-EDP , Is it not H3808 ADV I H589 PPRO-1MS that commanded H559 W-VQY3MS the people H5971 to be numbered H4487 L-VQFC ? even I H589 PPRO-1MS it H1931 PPRO-3MS is that H834 RPRO have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS and done evil indeed H7489 ; but as for these H428 W-PMP sheep H6629 , what H4100 IPRO have they done H6213 VQQ3MP ? let thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , O LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 , be H1961 VQI3FS on me , and on my father H1 CMS-1MS \'s house H1004 ; but not H3808 NADV on thy people H5971 , that they should be plagued H4046 .
18 Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H559 VQQ3MS Gad H1410 to say H559 L-VQFC to David H1732 , that H3588 CONJ David H1732 should go up H5927 VQY3MS , and set up H6965 an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS in the threshingfloor H1637 of Ornan H771 the Jebusite H2983 .
19 And David H1732 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS at the saying H1697 of Gad H1410 , which H834 RPRO he spoke H1696 VPQ3MS in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
20 And Ornan H771 turned back H7725 , and saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the angel H4397 ; and his four H702 sons H1121 CMP-3MS with H5973 PREP-3MS him hid themselves H2244 . Now Ornan H771 was threshing H1758 wheat H2406 .
21 And as David H1732 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H5704 PREP Ornan H771 , Ornan H771 looked H5027 and saw H7200 W-VIY3MS David H1732 , and went out H3318 W-VQY3MS of H4480 PREP the threshingfloor H1637 , and bowed himself H7812 to David H1732 with his face H639 NMD to the ground H776 NFS-3FS .
22 Then David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Ornan H771 , Grant H5414 me the place H4725 CMS of this threshingfloor H1637 , that I may build H1129 an altar H4196 NMS therein unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS : thou shalt grant H5414 it me for the full H4392 price H3701 : that the plague H4046 may be stayed H6113 from M-PREP the people H5971 D-NMS .
23 And Ornan H771 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 , Take H3947 VQI2MS it to thee , and let my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS do H6213 that which is good H2896 D-NMS in his eyes H5869 B-CMD-3MS : lo H7200 VQI2MS , I give H5414 VQQ1MS thee the oxen H1241 D-NMS also for burnt offerings H5930 , and the threshing instruments H4173 for wood H6086 , and the wheat H2406 for the meat offering H4503 ; I give H5414 it all H3605 .
24 And king H4428 D-NMS David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS to Ornan H771 , Nay H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ I will verily buy H7069 it for the full H4392 price H3701 : for H3588 CONJ I will not H3808 NADV take H5375 VQY1MS that which H834 RPRO is thine for the LORD H3068 L-EDS , nor offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 NFS without cost H2600 ADV .
25 So David H1732 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS to Ornan H771 for the place H4725 six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of gold H2091 NMS by weight H4948 NMS .
26 And David H1732 built H1129 W-VQY3MS there H8033 ADV an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and offered H5927 W-VHY3MS burnt offerings H5930 CFP and peace offerings H8002 , and called H7121 W-VQY3MS upon H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS ; and he answered H6030 him from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD by fire H784 upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 of burnt offering H5930 .
27 And the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H559 W-VQY3MS the angel H4397 ; and he put up his sword again H7725 W-VHY3MS into H413 PREP the sheath H5084 thereof .
28 At that H1931 time H6256 when David H1732 saw H7200 that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS had answered H6030 him in the threshingfloor H1637 of Ornan H771 the Jebusite H2983 D-TMS , then he sacrificed H2076 there H8033 ADV .
29 For the tabernacle H4908 of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO Moses H4872 made H6213 VQQ3MS in the wilderness H4057 , and the altar H4196 of the burnt offering H5930 , were at that H1931 season H6256 in the high place H1116 at Gibeon H1391 .
30 But David H1732 could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR go H1980 L-VQFC before H6440 L-CMP-3MS it to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of God H430 EDP : for H3588 CONJ he was afraid H1204 because H6440 M-CMP of the sword H2719 GFS of the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
