1 Samuel 16:9 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, "You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king."
2 But Samuel asked, "How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me." "Take a heifer with you," the LORD replied, "and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the LORD.
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me."
4 So Samuel did as the LORD instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. "What's wrong?" they asked. "Do you come in peace?"
5 "Yes," Samuel replied. "I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, "Surely this is the LORD's anointed!"
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
8 Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "This is not the one the LORD has chosen."
9 Next Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, "Neither is this the one the LORD has chosen."
10 In the same way all seven of Jesse's sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen any of these."
11 Then Samuel asked, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse replied. "But he's out in the fields watching the sheep and goats." "Send for him at once," Samuel said. "We will not sit down to eat until he arrives."
12 So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.And the LORD said, "This is the one; anoint him."
13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had left Saul, and the LORD sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear.
15 Some of Saul's servants said to him, "A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you.
16 Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again."
17 "All right," Saul said. "Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here."
18 One of the servants said to Saul, "One of Jesse's sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that-- he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the LORD is with him."
19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say, "Send me your son David, the shepherd."
20 Jesse responded by sending David to Saul, along with a young goat, a donkey loaded with bread, and a wineskin full of wine.
21 So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer.
22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse asking, "Please let David remain in my service, for I am very pleased with him."
23 And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.

2 And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS , How H349 can I go H1980 VQY1MS ? if Saul H7586 hear H8085 it , he will kill H2026 me . And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Take H3947 VQY2MS a heifer H5697 with H3027 B-CFS-2MS thee , and say H559 W-VQY3MS , I am come H935 to sacrifice H2076 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS .
3 And call H7121 Jesse H3448 to the sacrifice H2077 , and I H595 will show H3045 thee what H834 RPRO thou shalt do H6213 VQY2MS : and thou shalt anoint H4886 unto me him whom H834 RPRO I name H559 VQY1MS unto H413 thee .
4 And Samuel H8050 did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 VPQ3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to Bethlehem H1035 . And the elders H2205 of the town H5892 D-GFS trembled H2729 at his coming H7122 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Comest H935 thou peaceably H7965 ?
5 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Peaceably H7965 NMS : I am come H935 to sacrifice H2076 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS : sanctify yourselves H6942 W-VPY3MS , and come H935 with H854 PREP-1MS me to the sacrifice H2077 . And he sanctified H6942 W-VPY3MS Jesse H3448 and his sons H1121 CMP-3MS , and called H7121 W-VQY3MS them to the sacrifice H2077 .
6 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when they were come H935 , that he looked on W-VIY3MS Eliab H446 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Surely H389 ADV the LORD H3068 EDS \'s anointed H4899 JMS-3MS is before H5048 him .
7 But the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Samuel H8050 , Look H5027 not H408 NPAR on H413 PREP his countenance H4758 CMS-3MS , or on H413 PREP the height H1364 of his stature H6967 ; because H3588 CONJ I have refused H3988 him : for H3588 CONJ the LORD seeth not H3808 NPAR as H834 RPRO man H120 D-NMS seeth H7200 VQY3MS ; for H3588 CONJ man H120 D-NMS looketh H7200 VQY3MS on the outward appearance H5869 , but the LORD H3068 W-EDS looketh H7200 VQY3MS on the heart H3824 .
8 Then Jesse H3448 called H7121 W-VQY3MS Abinadab H41 , and made him pass H5674 before H6440 L-CMP Samuel H8050 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Neither H1571 CONJ hath the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS chosen H977 this H2088 .
9 Then Jesse H3448 made Shammah H8048 to pass by H5674 W-VHI3MS . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Neither H1571 CONJ hath the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS chosen H977 this H2088 .
10 Again , Jesse H3448 made seven H7651 RMS of his sons H1121 CMP-3MS to pass H5674 W-VHI3MS before H6440 L-CMP Samuel H8050 . And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jesse H3448 , The LORD H3068 EDS hath not H3808 NADV chosen H977 these H428 .
11 And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jesse H3448 , Are here all H8552 thy children H5288 D-NMP ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , There remaineth H7604 yet H5750 ADV the youngest H6996 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , he keepeth H7462 VQPMS the sheep H6629 BD-NMS . And Samuel H8050 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jesse H3448 , Send H7971 and fetch H3947 him : for H3588 CONJ we will not H3808 NADV sit down H5437 till H5704 PREP he come H935 hither H6311 .
12 And he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS , and brought H935 him in . Now he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was ruddy H132 , and withal H5973 PREP of a beautiful H3303 countenance H5869 NMD , and goodly H2896 to look to H7210 VQPMS-1MS . And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Arise H6965 VQI2MS , anoint H4886 him : for H3588 CONJ this H2088 DPRO is he H1931 PPRO-3MS .
13 Then Samuel H8050 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the horn H7161 of oil H8081 , and anointed H4886 him in the midst H7130 of his brethren H251 NMP-3MS : and the Spirit H7307 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H6743 upon H413 PREP David H1732 MMS from that day H3117 forward H4605 . So Samuel H8050 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Ramah H7414 .
14 But the Spirit H7307 W-GFS of the LORD H3068 EDS departed H5493 from M-PREP Saul H7586 , and an evil H7451 AFS spirit H7307 W-GFS from the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS troubled H1204 him .
15 And Saul H7586 \'s servants H5650 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Behold H2009 IJEC now H4994 IJEC , an evil H7451 AFS spirit H7307 NMS from God H430 EDP troubleth H1204 thee .
16 Let our lord H113 now H4994 IJEC command H559 VQY3MS thy servants H5650 , which are before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee , to seek out H1245 a man H376 NMS , who is a cunning H3045 VQPMS player H5059 on a harp H3658 : and it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H1961 W-VQQ3MS the evil H7451 AFS spirit H7307 NMS from God H430 EDP is upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , that he shall play H5059 with his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS , and thou shalt be well H2895 .
17 And Saul H7586 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his servants H5650 , Provide H7200 me now H4994 IJEC a man H376 NMS that can play H5059 well H3190 , and bring H935 him to H413 PREP me .
18 Then answered H6030 W-VQY3MS one H259 MMS of the servants H5288 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , I have seen H7200 VQQ1MS a son H1121 NMS of Jesse H3448 the Bethlehemite H1022 , that is cunning H3045 VQPMS in playing H5059 , and a mighty H1368 valiant man H2428 NMS , and a man H376 W-NMS of war H4421 NFS , and prudent H995 in matters H1697 VQPMS , and a comely H8389 person H376 W-NMS , and the LORD H3068 W-EDS is with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
19 Wherefore Saul H7586 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 unto H413 PREP Jesse H3448 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Send H7971 me David H1732 MMS thy son H1121 , which H834 RPRO is with the sheep H6629 .
20 And Jesse H3448 took H3947 W-VQY3MS an ass H2543 CMS laden with bread H3899 NMS , and a bottle H4997 of wine H3196 NMS , and a H259 MMS kid H1423 , and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS them by H3027 B-CFS David H1732 MMS his son H1121 CMS-3MS unto H413 PREP Saul H7586 .
21 And David H1732 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Saul H7586 , and stood H5975 before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him : and he loved H157 him greatly H3966 ADV ; and he became H1961 W-VPY3MS his armorbearer H5375 .
22 And Saul H7586 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Jesse H3448 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let David H1732 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP me ; for H3588 CONJ he hath found H4672 VQPMS favor H2580 NMS in my sight H5869 .
23 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H1961 W-VQQ3MS the evil spirit H7307 NFS from God H430 EDP was upon H413 PREP Saul H7586 , that David H1732 MMS took H3947 W-VQQ3MS a harp H3658 , and played H5059 with his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS : so Saul H7586 was refreshed H7304 , and was well H2895 , and the evil H7451 D-AFS spirit H7307 NFS departed H5493 from M-PREP-3MS him .
