2 Chronicles 6:15 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then Solomon prayed, "O LORD, you have said that you would live in a thick cloud of darkness.
2 Now I have built a glorious Temple for you, a place where you can live forever!"
3 Then the king turned around to the entire community of Israel standing before him and gave this blessing:
4 "Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who has kept the promise he made to my father, David. For he told my father,
5 'From the day I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I have never chosen a city among any of the tribes of Israel as the place where a Temple should be built to honor my name. Nor have I chosen a king to lead my people Israel.
6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem as the place for my name to be honored, and I have chosen David to be king over my people Israel.'"
7 Then Solomon said, "My father, David, wanted to build this Temple to honor the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
8 But the LORD told him, 'You wanted to build the Temple to honor my name. Your intention is good,
9 but you are not the one to do it. One of your own sons will build the Temple to honor me.'
10 "And now the LORD has fulfilled the promise he made, for I have become king in my father's place, and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the LORD promised. I have built this Temple to honor the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
11 There I have placed the Ark, which contains the covenant that the LORD made with the people of Israel."
12 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the entire community of Israel, and he lifted his hands in prayer.
13 Now Solomon had made a bronze platform 7-1/2 feet long, 7-1/2 feet wide, and 4-1/2 feet high and had placed it at the center of the Temple's outer courtyard. He stood on the platform, and then he knelt in front of the entire community of Israel and lifted his hands toward heaven.
14 He prayed, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven and earth. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.
15 You have kept your promise to your servant David, my father. You made that promise with your own mouth, and with your own hands you have fulfilled it today.
16 "And now, O LORD, God of Israel, carry out the additional promise you made to your servant David, my father. For you said to him, 'If your descendants guard their behavior and faithfully follow my Law as you have done, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.'
17 Now, O LORD, God of Israel, fulfill this promise to your servant David.
18 "But will God really live on earth among people? Why, even the highest heavens cannot contain you. How much less this Temple I have built!
19 Nevertheless, listen to my prayer and my plea, O LORD my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is making to you.
20 May you watch over this Temple day and night, this place where you have said you would put your name. May you always hear the prayers I make toward this place.
21 May you hear the humble and earnest requests from me and your people Israel when we pray toward this place. Yes, hear us from heaven where you live, and when you hear, forgive.
22 "If someone wrongs another person and is required to take an oath of innocence in front of your altar at this Temple,
23 then hear from heaven and judge between your servants-- the accuser and the accused. Pay back the guilty as they deserve. Acquit the innocent because of their innocence.
24 "If your people Israel are defeated by their enemies because they have sinned against you, and if they turn back and acknowledge your name and pray to you here in this Temple,
25 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and return them to this land you gave to them and to their ancestors.
26 "If the skies are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and if they pray toward this Temple and acknowledge your name and turn from their sins because you have punished them,
27 then hear from heaven and forgive the sins of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them to follow the right path, and send rain on your land that you have given to your people as their special possession.
28 "If there is a famine in the land or a plague or crop disease or attacks of locusts or caterpillars, or if your people's enemies are in the land besieging their towns-- whatever disaster or disease there is--
29 and if your people Israel pray about their troubles or sorrow, raising their hands toward this Temple,
30 then hear from heaven where you live, and forgive. Give your people what their actions deserve, for you alone know each human heart.
31 Then they will fear you and walk in your ways as long as they live in the land you gave to our ancestors.
32 "In the future, foreigners who do not belong to your people Israel will hear of you. They will come from distant lands when they hear of your great name and your strong hand and your powerful arm. And when they pray toward this Temple,
33 then hear from heaven where you live, and grant what they ask of you. In this way, all the people of the earth will come to know and fear you, just as your own people Israel do. They, too, will know that this Temple I have built honors your name.
34 "If your people go out where you send them to fight their enemies, and if they pray to you by turning toward this city you have chosen and toward this Temple I have built to honor your name,
35 then hear their prayers from heaven and uphold their cause.
36 "If they sin against you-- and who has never sinned?-- you might become angry with them and let their enemies conquer them and take them captive to a foreign land far away or near.
37 But in that land of exile, they might turn to you in repentance and pray, 'We have sinned, done evil, and acted wickedly.'
38 If they turn to you with their whole heart and soul in the land of their captivity and pray toward the land you gave to their ancestors-- toward this city you have chosen, and toward this Temple I have built to honor your name--
39 then hear their prayers and their petitions from heaven where you live, and uphold their cause. Forgive your people who have sinned against you.
40 "O my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive to all the prayers made to you in this place.
41 "And now arise, O LORD God, and enter your resting place, along with the Ark, the symbol of your power. May your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation; may your loyal servants rejoice in your goodness.
42 O LORD God, do not reject the king you have anointed. Remember your unfailing love for your servant David."

2 But I H589 W-PPRO-1MS have built H1129 a house H1004 CMS of habitation H2073 for thee , and a place H4349 for thy dwelling H3427 forever H5769 .
3 And the king H4428 D-NMS turned H5437 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and blessed H1288 W-VNY3MS the whole H3605 NMS congregation H6951 of Israel H3478 : and all H3605 NMS the congregation H6951 of Israel H3478 stood H5975 .
4 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , who hath with his hands H3027 fulfilled H4390 VPQ3MS that which H834 RPRO he spoke H1696 VPQ3MS with his mouth H6310 B-CMS-3MS to H854 my father H1 CMS-1MS David H1732 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
5 Since H4480 PREP the day H3117 D-AMS that H834 RPRO I brought forth my people H5971 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS I chose H977 no H3808 NADV city H5892 among all H3605 M-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 to build H1129 a house H1004 NMS in , that my name H8034 might be H1961 there H8033 ADV ; neither H3808 W-NADV chose H977 I any man H376 to be H1961 a ruler H5057 NMS over H5921 PREP my people H5971 Israel H3478 LMS :
6 But I have chosen H977 Jerusalem H3389 , that my name H8034 might be H1961 there H8033 ADV ; and have chosen H977 David H1732 to be H1961 over H5921 PREP my people H5971 Israel H3478 LMS .
7 Now it was H1961 W-VQY3MS in H5973 PREP the heart H3824 of David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS to build H1129 a house H1004 NMS for the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 LMS .
8 But the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS , Forasmuch H834 RPRO as it was H1961 VQQ3MS in H5973 PREP thine heart H3824 to build H1129 a house H1004 NMS for my name H8034 , thou didst well H2895 in that H3588 CONJ it was H1961 VQQ3MS in H5973 PREP thine heart H3824 :
9 Notwithstanding H7535 ADV thou H859 PPRO-2MS shalt not H3808 NADV build H1129 the house H1004 ; but H3588 CONJ thy son H1121 which shall come forth H3318 out of H4480 thy loins H2504 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall build H1129 the house H1004 D-NMS for my name H8034 .
10 The LORD H3068 EDS therefore hath performed H6965 his word H1697 that H834 RPRO he hath spoken H1696 : for I am risen up H6965 in the room H8478 NMS of David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS , and am set H3427 on H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of Israel H3478 , as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS promised H1696 VPQ3MS , and have built H1129 the house H1004 D-NMS for the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 LMS .
11 And in it H8033 ADV have I put H7760 the ark H727 , wherein H834 RPRO is the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS , that H834 RPRO he made H3772 with H5973 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
12 And he stood H5975 before H6440 L-CMP the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 EDS in the presence of H5048 all H3605 NMS the congregation H6951 of Israel H3478 , and spread forth H6566 his hands H3709 :
13 For H3588 CONJ Solomon H8010 MMS had made H6213 VQQ3MS a brazen H5178 CFS scaffold H3595 , of five H2568 MFS cubits H520 long H753 , and five H2568 cubits H520 broad H7341 , and three H7969 MFS cubits H520 high H6967 , and had set H5414 it in the midst H8432 B-NMS of the court H5835 : and upon H5921 PREP-3MS it he stood H5975 W-VQY3MS , and kneeled down H1288 upon H5921 PREP-3MS his knees H1290 before H5048 all H3605 NMS the congregation H6951 of Israel H3478 , and spread forth H6566 his hands H3709 toward heaven H8064 D-NMP-3FS ,
14 And said H559 W-VQY3MS , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 NAME-4MP of Israel H3478 , there is no H369 NPAR God H430 EDP like thee H3644 PREP-2MS in the heaven H8064 BD-NMP , nor in the earth H776 ; which keepest H8104 covenant H1285 D-NFS , and showest mercy H2617 unto thy servants H5650 , that walk H1980 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee with all H3605 B-CMS their hearts H3820 :
15 Thou which H834 RPRO hast kept H8104 with thy servant H5650 David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS that which H834 RPRO thou hast promised H1696 him ; and spakest H1696 with thy mouth H6310 , and hast fulfilled H4390 it with thine hand H3027 , as it is this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
16 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , keep H8104 VQI2MS with thy servant H5650 David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS that which H834 RPRO thou hast promised H1696 him , saying H559 L-VQFC , There shall not H3808 NADV fail H3772 VNI3MS thee a man H376 NMS in my sight H6440 to sit H3427 VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of Israel H3478 ; yet so H7535 ADV that thy children H1121 CMP-2MS take heed H8104 to their way H1870 CMS-3MP to walk H1980 L-VQFC in my law H8451 , as H834 RPRO thou hast walked H1980 before H6440 L-CMP-1MS me .
17 Now H6258 W-ADV then , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , let thy word H1697 be verified H539 , which H834 RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 unto thy servant H5650 David H1732 .
18 But H3588 CONJ will God H430 EDP in very deed H552 dwell H3427 with H854 PREP men H120 D-NMS on H5921 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS ? behold H2009 IJEC , heaven H8064 NMP and the heaven H8064 of heavens H8064 D-NMD cannot H3808 NADV contain H3557 thee ; how much less H637 CONJ this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS which H834 RPRO I have built H1129 !
19 Have respect H6437 therefore to H413 PREP the prayer H8605 of thy servant H5650 , and to H413 PREP his supplication H8467 , O LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 , to hearken H8085 unto H413 PREP the cry H7440 and the prayer H8605 which H834 RPRO thy servant H5650 prayeth H6419 before H6440 thee :
20 That thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS may be H1961 open H6605 upon H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS day H3119 ADV and night H3915 W-NMS , upon H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS whereof H834 RPRO thou hast said H559 VQQ2MS that thou wouldest put H7760 L-VQFC thy name H8034 there H8033 ADV ; to hearken H8085 unto H413 PREP the prayer H8605 which H834 RPRO thy servant H5650 prayeth H6419 VTY3MS toward H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS .
21 Hearken H8085 therefore unto H413 PREP the supplications H8469 of thy servant H5650 , and of thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO they shall make H6419 toward H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS : hear H8085 thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS from thy dwelling H3427 place H4725 , even from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD ; and when thou hearest H8085 , forgive H5545 .
22 If H518 PART a man H376 NMS sin H2398 against his neighbor H7453 L-CMS-3MS , and an oath H423 be laid H5375 upon him to make him swear H422 , and the oath H423 come H935 before H6440 L-CMP thine altar H4196 in this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 ;
23 Then hear H8085 thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , and do H6213 , and judge H8199 thy servants H5650 , by requiting H7725 L-VHFC the wicked H7563 , by recompensing H5414 L-VQFC his way H1870 CMS-3MS upon his own head H7218 ; and by justifying H6663 the righteous H6662 AMS , by giving H5414 him according to his righteousness H6666 .
24 And if H518 thy people H5971 Israel H3478 be put to the worse H5062 before H6440 L-CMP the enemy H341 VQPMS , because H3588 CONJ they have sinned H2398 against thee ; and shall return H7725 and confess H3034 thy name H8034 CMS-2MS , and pray H6419 and make supplication H2603 before H6440 L-CMP thee in this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 ;
25 Then hear H8085 thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS from H4480 PREP the heavens H8064 D-NMD , and forgive H5545 the sin H2403 of thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , and bring them again H7725 unto H413 PREP the land H127 D-NFS which H834 RPRO thou gavest H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS to them and to their fathers H1 .
26 When the heaven H8064 D-NMD is shut up H6113 , and there is H1961 VQY3MS no H3808 W-NPAR rain H4306 NMS , because H3588 CONJ they have sinned H2398 against thee ; yet if they pray H6419 toward H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and confess H3034 thy name H8034 CMS-2MS , and turn H7725 from their sin H2403 , when H3588 CONJ thou dost afflict H6031 them ;
27 Then hear H8085 thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS from heaven H8064 D-NMD , and forgive H5545 the sin H2403 of thy servants H5650 , and of thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , when H3588 CONJ thou hast taught H3384 them the good H2896 way H1870 D-NMS , wherein H834 RPRO they should walk H1980 ; and send H5414 rain H4306 NMS upon H5921 PREP thy land H776 , which H834 RPRO thou hast given H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS unto thy people H5971 for an inheritance H5159 .
28 If H3588 CONJ there be H1961 VQY3MS dearth H7458 NMS in the land H776 BD-GFS , if H3588 CONJ there be H1961 VQY3MS pestilence H1698 , if H3588 CONJ there be H1961 VQY3MS blasting H7711 , or mildew H3420 , locusts H697 , or caterpillars H2625 ; if H3588 CONJ their enemies H341 besiege H6887 them in the cities H8179 of their land H776 B-GFS ; whatsoever H3605 NMS sore H5061 or whatsoever H3605 NMS sickness H4245 there be :
29 Then what H3605 NMS prayer H8605 or what H3605 NMS supplication H8467 soever H834 RPRO shall be made H1961 VQY3MS of any H3605 NMS man H120 D-NMS , or of all H3605 NMS thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , when H834 RPRO every one H376 NMS shall know H3045 his own sore H5061 and his own grief H4341 , and shall spread forth H6566 his hands H3709 in H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS :
30 Then hear H8085 thou H859 PPRO-2FS from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD thy dwelling H3427 place H4349 , and forgive H5545 , and render H5414 unto every man H376 LD-NMS according unto all H3605 his ways H1870 CMP-3MS , whose heart H3824 thou knowest H3045 VQQ2MS ; ( CONJ for CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS only H905 knowest H3045 VQQ2MS the hearts H3824 of the children H1121 of men H120 D-NMS : )
31 That H4616 L-CONJ they may fear H3372 thee , to walk H1980 L-VQFC in thy ways H1870 , so long H3605 NMS as H834 RPRO they H1992 PPRO-3MP live H2416 NMP in PREP the land H127 D-NFS which H834 RPRO thou gavest H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS unto our fathers H1 .
32 Moreover H1571 W-CONJ concerning H413 PREP the stranger H5237 , which H834 RPRO is not H3808 NADV of thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , but is come H935 from a far H7350 country H776 M-NFS for thy great name\'s sake H4616 L-CONJ , and thy mighty H2389 hand H3027 , and thy stretched out H5186 arm H2220 ; if they come H935 and pray H6419 in H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS ;
33 Then hear H8085 thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS from H4480 PREP the heavens H8064 D-NMD , even from thy dwelling H3427 place H4349 , and do H6213 according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO the stranger H5237 calleth H7121 VQY3MS to H413 PREP-2MS thee for ; that H4616 L-CONJ all H3605 CMS people H5971 of the earth H776 D-GFS may know H3045 thy name H8034 CMS-2MS , and fear H3372 thee , as doth thy people H5971 Israel H3478 , and may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS which H834 RPRO I have built H1129 is called H7121 by thy name H8034 .
34 If H3588 CONJ thy people H5971 go out H3318 VQY3MS to war H4421 against H5921 PREP their enemies H341 by the way H1870 NMS that H834 RPRO thou shalt send H7971 them , and they pray H6419 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee toward H1870 NMS this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS which H834 RPRO thou hast chosen H977 VQQ2MS , and the house H1004 which H834 RPRO I have built H1129 for thy name H8034 ;
35 Then hear H8085 thou from H4480 PREP the heavens H8064 D-NMD their prayer H8605 and their supplication H8467 , and maintain H6213 their cause H4941 .
36 If H3588 CONJ they sin H2398 against H3588 CONJ thee H3588 CONJ , ( CONJ for CONJ there is no H369 NPAR man H120 NMS which H834 RPRO sinneth H2398 not H3808 NADV , ) and thou be angry H599 with them , and deliver H5414 them over before H6440 L-CMP their enemies H341 VQPMS , and they carry them away captives H7617 unto H413 PREP a land H776 GFS far off H7350 or H176 CONJ near H7138 ;
37 Yet if they bethink themselves H3824 in the land H776 B-NFS whither H834 RPRO they are carried captive H7617 , and turn H7725 and pray H2603 unto H413 PREP thee in the land H776 B-GFS of their captivity H7628 , saying H559 L-VQFC , We have sinned H2398 , we have done amiss H5753 , and have dealt wickedly H7561 ;
38 If they return H7725 to H413 PREP-2MS thee with all H3605 B-CMS their heart H3820 CMS-3MP and with all H3605 WB-CMS their soul H5315 CFS-3MP in the land H776 B-GFS of their captivity H7628 , whither H834 RPRO they have carried them captives H7617 , and pray H6419 toward H1870 NMS their land H776 , which H834 RPRO thou gavest H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS unto their fathers H1 , and toward the city H5892 which H834 RPRO thou hast chosen H977 VQQ2MS , and toward the house H1004 which H834 RPRO I have built H1129 for thy name H8034 :
39 Then hear H8085 thou from H4480 PREP the heavens H8064 D-NMD , even from thy dwelling H3427 place H4349 , their prayer H8605 and their supplications H8467 , and maintain H6213 their cause H4941 , and forgive H5545 thy people H5971 which H834 RPRO have sinned H2398 VQQ3MP against thee .
40 Now H6258 ADV , my God H430 , let , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS be H1961 open H6605 , and let thine ears H241 be attent H7183 unto the prayer H8605 that is made in this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS .
41 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore arise H6965 , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 EDP , into thy resting place H5118 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and the ark H727 of thy strength H5797 : let thy priests H3548 , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 EDP , be clothed H3847 VQY3MP with salvation H8668 , and let thy saints H2623 rejoice H8055 in goodness H2896 .
42 O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 EDP , turn not away H7725 the face H6440 CMP of thine anointed H4899 : remember H2142 the mercies H2617 of David H1732 thy servant H5650 .
