Deuteronomy 5:31 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, "Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!
2 "The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.
3 The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.
4 At the mountain the LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire.
5 I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said:
6 "I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
7 "You must not have any other god but me.
8 "You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
9 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected-- even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
10 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
11 "You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.
13 You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do.
15 Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.
16 "Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
17 "You must not murder.
18 "You must not commit adultery.
19 "You must not steal.
20 "You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
21 "You must not covet your neighbor's wife. You must not covet your neighbor's house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
22 "The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
23 "But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me.
24 They said, 'Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!
25 But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.
26 Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?
27 Go yourself and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.'
28 "The LORD heard the request you made to me. And he said, 'I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right.
29 Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.
30 Go and tell them, "Return to your tents."
31 But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.'"
32 So Moses told the people, "You must be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, following his instructions in every detail.
33 Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.

2 The LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 made H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS with H5973 PREP-1MP us in Horeb H2722 .
3 The LORD H3068 EDS made H3772 not H3808 NADV this H2063 D-DFS covenant H1285 D-NFS with H854 PREP our fathers H1 , but H3588 CONJ with H854 PREP-1MP us , even us H587 PPRO-1MP , who H428 PMP are all H3605 of us here H6311 alive H2416 NMP this day H3117 D-AMS .
4 The LORD H3068 EDS talked H1696 VPQ3MS with H5973 PREP-3MP you face to face H6440 NMP in the mount H2022 out of the midst H8432 of the fire H784 ,
5 (I stood H5975 between H996 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS and you at that H1931 D-PPRO-3FS time H6256 , to show H5046 L-VHFC you the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ ye were afraid H3372 by reason of M-CMP the fire H784 , and went not up H5927 into H2022 the mount H2022 ; ) saying H559 L-VQFC ,
6 I H595 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , which H834 RPRO brought H3318 thee out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , from the house H1004 of bondage H5650 .
7 Thou shalt have H1961 VQY3MS none H3808 NADV other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP before H5921 PREP me .
8 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV make H6213 thee any graven image H6459 , or any H3605 NMS likeness H8544 NFS of any thing that H834 RPRO is in heaven H8064 BD-NMP above H4605 , or that H834 RPRO is in the earth H776 B-NFS beneath H8478 M-CFS , or that H834 RPRO is in the waters H4325 BD-NMP beneath H8478 M-CFS the earth H776 :
9 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV bow down thyself H7812 unto them , nor H3808 W-NADV serve H5647 them : for H3588 CONJ I H595 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS am a jealous H7067 God H410 EDS , visiting H6485 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 upon H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP unto H5921 PREP the third H8029 and fourth H7256 generation of them that hate H8130 me ,
10 And showing H6213 mercy H2617 NMS unto thousands H505 of them that love H157 me and keep H8104 my commandments H4687 .
11 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV take H5375 VQY2MS the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS in vain H7723 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS will not H3808 NADV hold him guiltless H5352 that H834 RPRO taketh H5375 VQY3MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS in vain H7723 .
12 Keep H8104 the sabbath H7676 day H3117 NMS to sanctify H6942 it , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 hath commanded H6680 thee .
13 Six H8337 days H3117 NMP thou shalt labor H5647 , and do H6213 all H3605 thy work H4399 :
14 But the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 W-NMS is the sabbath H7676 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS : in it thou shalt not H3808 NADV do H6213 any H3605 CMS work H4399 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , nor thy son H1121 , nor thy daughter H1323 , nor thy manservant H5650 , nor thy maidservant H519 , nor thine ox H7794 , nor thine ass H2543 , nor any H3605 W-CMS of thy cattle H929 , nor thy stranger H1616 that H834 RPRO is within thy gates H8179 ; that H4616 L-CONJ thy manservant H5650 and thy maidservant H519 may rest H5117 as well as thou .
15 And remember H2142 that H3588 CONJ thou wast H1961 VQQ2MS a servant H5650 NMS in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , and that the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS brought thee out H3318 thence H8033 M-ADV through a mighty H2389 hand H3027 and by a stretched out H5186 arm H2220 : therefore H3651 ADV the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS commanded H6680 thee to keep H6213 L-VQFC the sabbath H7676 day H3117 NMS .
16 Honor H3513 thy father H1 NMS and thy mother H517 , as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath commanded H6680 thee ; that H4416 thy days H3117 CMP-2MS may be prolonged H748 , and that H4616 L-CONJ it may go well H3190 with thee , in H5921 PREP the land H127 D-NFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS giveth H5414 VQPMS thee .
17 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV kill H7523 .
18 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou commit adultery H5003 .
19 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou steal H1589 .
20 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou bear H6030 false H7723 witness H5707 against thy neighbor H7453 .
21 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou desire H2530 thy neighbor H7453 \'s wife H802 CFS , neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou covet H183 thy neighbor H7453 \'s house H1004 CMS , his field H7704 , or his manservant H5650 , or his maidservant H519 , his ox H7794 CMS-3MS , or his ass H2543 , or any H3605 W-CMS thing that H834 RPRO is thy neighbor H7453 \'s .
22 These H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS your assembly H6951 in the mount H2022 out of the midst H8432 of the fire H784 , of the cloud H6051 , and of the thick darkness H6205 , with a great H1419 AMS voice H6963 CMS : and he added no more H3254 . And he wrote H3789 them in H5921 PREP two H8147 ONUM tables H3871 of stone H68 NFP , and delivered H5414 them unto H413 PREP me .
23 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when ye heard H8085 the voice H6963 out of the midst H8432 of the darkness H2822 D-NMS , (for the mountain H2022 did burn H1197 with fire H784 , ) that ye came near H7126 unto H413 PREP-1MS me , even all H3605 NMS the heads H7218 CMP of your tribes H7626 , and your elders H2205 ;
24 And ye said H559 , Behold H2005 IJEC , the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 NAME-4MP hath showed H7200 us his glory H3519 and his greatness H1433 , and we have heard H8085 VQQ1MP his voice H6963 CMS-3MS out of the midst H8432 of the fire H784 : we have seen H7200 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS that H3588 CONJ God H430 EDP doth talk H1696 VPY3MS with H854 PREP man H120 D-NMS , and he liveth H2425 .
25 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore why H4100 L-IPRO should we die H4191 ? for H3588 CONJ this H2063 D-DFS great H1419 fire H784 will consume H398 us : if H518 PART we H587 PPRO-1MP hear H8085 the voice H6963 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 any more H3254 , then we shall die H4191 .
26 For H3588 CONJ who H4310 IPRO is there of all H3605 CMS flesh H1320 NMS , that H834 RPRO hath heard H8085 the voice H6963 CMS of the living H2416 NMP God H430 EDP speaking H1696 VPPMS out of the midst H8432 of the fire H784 , as we H3644 have , and lived H2421 ?
27 Go thou near H7126 , and hear H8085 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 shall say H559 VQY3MS : and speak H1696 thou H859 PPRO-2MS unto H413 us all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 shall speak H1696 VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee ; and we will hear H8085 it , and do H6213 it .
28 And the LORD H3068 EDS heard H8085 VQQ1MS the voice H6963 CMS of your words H1697 , when ye spoke H1696 unto H413 me ; and the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS the voice H6963 CMS of the words H1697 CMP of this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , which H834 RPRO they have spoken H1696 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee : they have well said H3190 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO they have spoken H1696 .
29 O that IPRO there were H1961 W-VQQ3MS such H2088 DPRO a heart H3824 in them , that they would fear H3372 me , and keep H8104 all H3605 NMS my commandments H4687 always H3605 NMS , that H4616 L-CONJ it might be well H3190 with them , and with their children H1121 forever H5769 L-NMS !
30 Go H1980 VQI2MS say H559 to them , Get H7725 you into your tents H168 again .
31 But as for thee H859 W-PPRO-2MS , stand H5975 VQI2MS thou here H6311 ADV by H5978 PREP-1MS me , and I will speak H1696 W-VPI1MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee all H3605 NMS the commandments H4687 , and the statutes H2706 , and the judgments H4941 , which H834 RPRO thou shalt teach H3925 them , that they may do H6213 W-VQQ3MP them in the land H776 BD-GFS which H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS give H5414 VQPMS them to possess H3423 it .
32 Ye shall observe H8104 to do H6213 L-VQFC therefore as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 hath commanded H6680 VPQ3MS you : ye shall not H3808 NADV turn aside H5493 to the right hand H3225 NFS or to the left H8040 .
33 Ye shall walk H1980 in all H3605 B-CMS the ways H1870 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 hath commanded H6680 VPQ3MS you , that H4616 L-CONJ ye may live H2421 , and that it may be well H2895 with you , and that ye may prolong H748 your days H3117 NMP in the land H776 B-NFS which H834 RPRO ye shall possess H3423 .
