Exodus 34:3 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then the LORD told Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. I will write on them the same words that were on the tablets you smashed.
2 Be ready in the morning to climb up Mount Sinai and present yourself to me on the top of the mountain.
3 No one else may come with you. In fact, no one is to appear anywhere on the mountain. Do not even let the flocks or herds graze near the mountain."
4 So Moses chiseled out two tablets of stone like the first ones. Early in the morning he climbed Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.
5 Then the LORD came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh.
6 The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, "Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected-- even children in the third and fourth generations."
8 Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped.
9 And he said, "O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession."
10 The LORD replied, "Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD-- the awesome power I will display for you.
11 But listen carefully to everything I command you today. Then I will go ahead of you and drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
12 "Be very careful never to make a treaty with the people who live in the land where you are going. If you do, you will follow their evil ways and be trapped.
13 Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles.
14 You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.
15 "You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them.
16 Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods.
17 You must not make any gods of molten metal for yourselves.
18 "You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt.
19 "The firstborn of every animal belongs to me, including the firstborn males from your herds of cattle and your flocks of sheep and goats.
20 A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the LORD by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son."No one may appear before me without an offering.
21 "You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest.
22 "You must celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the first crop of the wheat harvest, and celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season.
23 Three times each year every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the LORD, the God of Israel.
24 I will drive out the other nations ahead of you and expand your territory, so no one will covet and conquer your land while you appear before the LORD your God three times each year.
25 "You must not offer the blood of my sacrificial offerings together with any baked goods containing yeast. And none of the meat of the Passover sacrifice may be kept over until the next morning.
26 "As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the house of the LORD your God."You must not cook a young goat in its mother's milk."
27 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel."
28 Moses remained there on the mountain with the LORD forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the LORD wrote the terms of the covenant-- the Ten Commandments-- on the stone tablets.
29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn't aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD.
30 So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses' face, they were afraid to come near him.
31 But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the leaders of the community to come over, and he talked with them.
32 Then all the people of Israel approached him, and Moses gave them all the instructions the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil.
34 But whenever he went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he would remove the veil until he came out again. Then he would give the people whatever instructions the LORD had given him,
35 and the people of Israel would see the radiant glow of his face. So he would put the veil over his face until he returned to speak with the LORD.

2 And be H1961 W-VQI2MS ready H3559 NMS in the morning H1242 , and come up H5927 in the morning H1242 unto H413 PREP mount H2022 CMS Sinai H5514 , and present thyself H5324 there H8033 ADV to me in H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of the mount H2022 .
3 And no H3808 ADV man H376 NMS shall come up H5927 VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee , neither H408 NPAR let any man H376 NMS be seen H7200 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the mount H2022 ; neither H408 NPAR let the flocks H6629 nor herds H1241 feed H7462 VQY3MP before H413 PREP 6 H4136 PREP that H1931 mount H2022 .
4 And he hewed H6458 two H8147 tables H3871 of stone H68 NFP like unto the first H7223 ; and Moses H4872 rose up early H7925 in the morning H1242 , and went up H5927 W-VHY3MS unto H413 PREP mount H2022 CMS Sinai H5514 , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had commanded H6680 VPQ3MS him , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS the two H8147 ONUM tables H3871 of stone H68 .
5 And the LORD H3068 EDS descended H3381 W-VQY3MS in the cloud H6051 BD-NMS , and stood H3320 with H5973 PREP-3MS him there H8033 ADV , and proclaimed H7121 W-VQY3MS the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
6 And the LORD H3068 EDS passed by H5674 W-VQY3MS before H5921 PREP him , and proclaimed H7121 W-VQY3MS , The LORD H3068 EDS , The LORD H3068 EDS God H410 EDS , merciful H7349 and gracious H2587 , longsuffering H750 JMS , and abundant H7227 W-JMS in goodness H2617 NMS and truth H571 ,
7 Keeping H5341 VQPMS mercy H2617 NMS for thousands H505 , forgiving H5375 iniquity H5771 NMS and transgression H6588 and sin H2403 , and that will by no means clear H3808 NADV the guilty ; visiting H6485 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 upon H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP , and upon H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP \'s children H1121 NMP , unto H5921 PREP the third H8029 and to H5921 PREP the fourth H7256 generation .
8 And Moses H4872 made haste H4116 , and bowed his head H6915 toward the earth H776 NFS-3FS , and worshiped H7812 W-VHY3MS .
9 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART now H4994 IJEC I have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 , O Lord H136 EDS , let my Lord H136 EDS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , go H1980 among H7130 us ; for H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3MS is a stiffnecked H7186 people H5971 NMS ; and pardon H5545 our iniquity H5771 and our sin H2403 , and take us for thine inheritance H5157 .
10 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS make H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS : before H5048 all H3605 CMS thy people H5971 I will do H6213 marvels H6381 , such as H834 RPRO have not H3808 ADV been done H1254 in all H3605 the earth H776 D-GFS , nor in any H3605 WB-CMS nation H1471 D-NMP : and all H3605 CMS the people H5971 among H7130 which H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS art shall see H7200 the work H4639 M-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3MS is a terrible thing H3372 VNCMS that H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS will do H6213 VQPMS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
11 Observe H8104 thou that which H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS command H6680 thee this day H3117 D-AMS : behold H2009 , I drive out H1644 before H6440 M-CMP-2MS thee the Amorite H567 D-TMS , and the Canaanite H3669 WD-EMS , and the Hittite H2850 , and the Perizzite H6522 WD-EMS , and the Hivite H2340 , and the Jebusite H2983 .
12 Take heed H8104 VNI2MS to thyself , lest H6435 CONJ thou make H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS with the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 D-GFS whither H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS goest H935 VQPMS , lest H6435 CONJ it be H1961 VQY3MS for a snare H4170 in the midst H7130 of thee :
13 But H3588 CONJ ye shall destroy H5422 their altars H4196 , break H7665 their images H4676 , and cut down H3772 their groves H842 :
14 For H3588 CONJ thou shalt worship H7812 no H3808 NADV other H312 AMS god H410 L-NMS : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS , whose name H8034 CMS-3MS is Jealous H7067 , is a jealous H7067 God H410 EDS :
15 Lest H6435 CONJ thou make H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS with the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 D-GFS , and they go a whoring H2181 after H310 PREP their gods H430 , and do sacrifice H2076 unto their gods H430 , and one call H7121 thee , and thou eat H398 W-VQQ2MS of his sacrifice H2077 ;
16 And thou take H3947 of their daughters H1323 unto thy sons H1121 , and their daughters H1323 go a whoring H2181 after H310 PREP their gods H430 , and make thy sons H1121 CMP-2MS go a whoring H2181 after H310 PREP their gods H430 .
17 Thou shalt make H6213 thee no H3808 NADV molten H4541 gods H430 CDP .
18 The feast H2282 of unleavened bread H4682 shalt thou keep H8104 VQY2MS . Seven H7651 RMS days H3117 NMP thou shalt eat H398 VQY2MS unleavened bread H4682 , as H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 thee , in the time H4150 of the month H2320 Abib H24 : for H3588 CONJ in the month H2320 Abib H24 thou camest out H3318 from Egypt H4714 .
19 All H3605 NMS that openeth H6363 the matrix H7358 NMS is mine ; and every H3605 NMS firstling H6363 among thy cattle H4735 , whether ox H7794 CMS or sheep H7716 , that is male H2145 .
20 But the firstling H6363 of an ass H2543 CMS thou shalt redeem H6299 with a lamb H7716 : and if H518 W-PART thou redeem H6299 him not H3808 NADV , then shalt thou break his neck H6202 . All H3605 NMS the firstborn H1060 CMS of thy sons H1121 CMP-2MS thou shalt redeem H6299 . And none H3808 ADV shall appear H7200 before H6440 CMP-1MS me empty H7387 .
21 Six H8337 days H3117 NMP thou shalt work H5647 , but on the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 thou shalt rest H7673 : in earing time H2758 and in harvest H7105 thou shalt rest H7673 .
22 And thou shalt observe H6213 VQY2MS the feast H2282 of weeks H7620 , of the firstfruits H1061 of wheat H2406 harvest H7105 , and the feast H2282 of ingathering H614 at the year H8141 \'s end H8622 .
23 Thrice H7969 MFS in the year H8141 shall all H3605 NMS your men children H2138 appear H7200 before H6440 CMP the Lord H113 GOD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 LMS .
24 For H3588 CONJ I will cast out H3423 the nations H1471 NMP before H6440 CMP thee , and enlarge H7337 thy borders H1366 : neither H3808 W-NPAR shall any man H376 NMS desire H2530 thy land H776 , when thou shalt go up H5927 to appear H7200 before H6440 CMP the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS thrice H7969 MFS in the year H8141 .
25 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV offer H7819 the blood H1818 CMS of my sacrifice H2077 with H5921 PREP leaven H2557 ; neither H3808 W-NADV shall the sacrifice H2077 NMS of the feast H2282 of the passover H6453 be left H3885 VQY3MS unto the morning H1242 .
26 The first H7225 CFS of the firstfruits H1061 of thy land H127 thou shalt bring H935 VHY2MS unto the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS . Thou shalt not H3808 NADV seethe H1310 a kid H1423 in his mother H517 CFS-3MS \'s milk H2461 .
27 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Write H3789 thou these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP : for H3588 CONJ after H5921 PREP the tenor H6310 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP I have made H3772 VQQ1MS a covenant H1285 NFS with H854 PART-2MS thee and with H854 W-PART Israel H3478 LMS .
28 And he was H1961 W-VPY3MS there H8033 ADV with H5973 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS forty H705 MMP days H3117 NMS and forty H705 W-MMP nights H3915 GMS ; he did neither H3808 NADV eat H398 VQQ3MS bread H3899 NMS , nor H3808 NADV drink H8354 water H4325 W-NMD . And he wrote H3789 upon H5921 PREP the tables H3871 the words H1697 CMP of the covenant H1285 D-NFS , the ten H6235 commandments H1697 .
29 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Moses H4872 came down H3381 from mount H2022 Sinai H5514 with the two H8147 tables H3871 of testimony H5715 in Moses H4872 \' hand H3027 B-CFS , when he came down H3381 from H4480 PREP the mount H2022 , that Moses H4872 knew H3045 VQQ3MS not H3808 ADV that H3588 CONJ the skin H5785 NMS of his face H6440 CMP-3MS shone H7160 while he talked H1696 with H854 PREP-3MS him .
30 And when Aaron H175 and all H3605 W-CMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS Moses H4872 , behold H2009 IJEC , the skin H5785 NMS of his face H6440 CMP-3MS shone H7160 ; and they were afraid H3372 W-VQY3MP to come nigh H5066 him .
31 And Moses H4872 called H7121 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them ; and Aaron H175 and all H3605 W-CMS the rulers H5387 of the congregation H5712 returned H7725 W-VUY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him : and Moses H4872 talked H1696 W-VPY3MS with H413 them .
32 And afterward H310 all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 came nigh H5066 : and he gave them in commandment H6680 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS with H854 PREP-3MS him in mount H2022 Sinai H5514 .
33 And till Moses H4872 had done H3615 W-VPY3MS speaking H1696 with H854 PREP-3MP them , he put H5414 W-VQQ3MS a veil H4533 on H5921 PREP his face H6440 CMP-3MS .
34 But when Moses H4872 went in H935 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS to speak H1696 with H854 PREP-3MS him , he took the veil off H5493 , until H5704 PREP he came out H3318 . And he came out H3318 , and spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 that which H834 RPRO he was commanded H6680 .
35 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 saw H7200 the face H6440 CMP of Moses H4872 , that H3588 CONJ the skin H5785 NMS of Moses H4872 \' face H6440 CMP shone H7160 : and Moses H4872 put H7725 the veil H4533 upon H5921 PREP his face H6440 CMP again , until H5704 PREP he went in H935 to speak H1696 with H854 PREP-3MS him .
