Genesis 43:17 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 But the famine continued to ravage the land of Canaan.
2 When the grain they had brought from Egypt was almost gone, Jacob said to his sons, "Go back and buy us a little more food."
3 But Judah said, "The man was serious when he warned us, 'You won't see my face again unless your brother is with you.'
4 If you send Benjamin with us, we will go down and buy more food.
5 But if you don't let Benjamin go, we won't go either. Remember, the man said, 'You won't see my face again unless your brother is with you.'"
6 "Why were you so cruel to me?" Jacob moaned. "Why did you tell him you had another brother?"
7 "The man kept asking us questions about our family," they replied. "He asked, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' So we answered his questions. How could we know he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"
8 Judah said to his father, "Send the boy with me, and we will be on our way. Otherwise we will all die of starvation-- and not only we, but you and our little ones.
9 I personally guarantee his safety. You may hold me responsible if I don't bring him back to you. Then let me bear the blame forever.
10 If we hadn't wasted all this time, we could have gone and returned twice by now."
11 So their father, Jacob, finally said to them, "If it can't be avoided, then at least do this. Pack your bags with the best products of this land. Take them down to the man as gifts-- balm, honey, gum, aromatic resin, pistachio nuts, and almonds.
12 Also take double the money that was put back in your sacks, as it was probably someone's mistake.
13 Then take your brother, and go back to the man.
14 May God Almighty give you mercy as you go before the man, so that he will release Simeon and let Benjamin return. But if I must lose my children, so be it."
15 So the men packed Jacob's gifts and double the money and headed off with Benjamin. They finally arrived in Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the manager of his household, "These men will eat with me this noon. Take them inside the palace. Then go slaughter an animal, and prepare a big feast."
17 So the man did as Joseph told him and took them into Joseph's palace.
18 The brothers were terrified when they saw that they were being taken into Joseph's house. "It's because of the money someone put in our sacks last time we were here," they said. "He plans to pretend that we stole it. Then he will seize us, make us slaves, and take our donkeys."
19 The brothers approached the manager of Joseph's household and spoke to him at the entrance to the palace.
20 "Sir," they said, "we came to Egypt once before to buy food.
21 But as we were returning home, we stopped for the night and opened our sacks. Then we discovered that each man's money-- the exact amount paid-- was in the top of his sack! Here it is; we have brought it back with us.
22 We also have additional money to buy more food. We have no idea who put our money in our sacks."
23 "Relax. Don't be afraid," the household manager told them. "Your God, the God of your father, must have put this treasure into your sacks. I know I received your payment." Then he released Simeon and brought him out to them.
24 The manager then led the men into Joseph's palace. He gave them water to wash their feet and provided food for their donkeys.
25 They were told they would be eating there, so they prepared their gifts for Joseph's arrival at noon.
26 When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought him, then bowed low to the ground before him.
27 After greeting them, he asked, "How is your father, the old man you spoke about? Is he still alive?"
28 "Yes," they replied. "Our father, your servant, is alive and well." And they bowed low again.
29 Then Joseph looked at his brother Benjamin, the son of his own mother. "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" Joseph asked. "May God be gracious to you, my son."
30 Then Joseph hurried from the room because he was overcome with emotion for his brother. He went into his private room, where he broke down and wept.
31 After washing his face, he came back out, keeping himself under control. Then he ordered, "Bring out the food!"
32 The waiters served Joseph at his own table, and his brothers were served at a separate table. The Egyptians who ate with Joseph sat at their own table, because Egyptians despise Hebrews and refuse to eat with them.
33 Joseph told each of his brothers where to sit, and to their amazement, he seated them according to age, from oldest to youngest.
34 And Joseph filled their plates with food from his own table, giving Benjamin five times as much as he gave the others. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

3 And Judah H3063 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , The man H376 D-NMS did solemnly protest H5749 unto us , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Ye shall not H3808 ADV see H7200 my face H6440 CMP-1MS , except H1115 PREP your brother H251 be with H854 you .
4 If H518 PART thou wilt H3426 send H7971 our brother H251 with H854 PREP-1MP us , we will go down H3381 and buy H7666 thee food H400 NMS :
5 But if H518 W-PART thou wilt not H369 send H7971 him , we will not H3808 NADV go down H3381 : for H3588 CONJ the man H376 D-NMS said H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 us , Ye shall not H3808 ADV see H7200 my face H6440 CMP-1MS , except H1115 PREP your brother H251 be with H854 you .
6 And Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IGAT dealt ye so ill H7489 with me , as to tell H5046 L-VHFC the man H376 LD-NMS whether ye had yet H5750 a brother H251 ?
7 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , The man H376 D-NMS asked us straitly H7592 of our state , and of our kindred H4138 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Is your father H1 yet H5750 alive H2416 AMS ? have H3426 I-ADV ye another brother H251 NMS ? and we told H5046 him according to H5921 PREP the tenor H6310 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP : could we certainly know H3045 that H3588 CONJ he would say H559 VQY3MS , Bring your brother down H3381 ?
8 And Judah H3063 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Israel H3478 his father H1 CMS-3MS , Send H7971 the lad H5288 with H854 PREP-1MS me , and we will arise H6965 and go H1980 ; that we may live H2421 , and not H3808 W-NPAR die H4191 , both H1571 CONJ we H587 PPRO-1MP , and H1571 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and also H1571 CONJ our little ones H2945 .
9 I H595 PPRO-1MS will be surety H6148 for him ; of my hand H3027 shalt thou require H1245 him : if H518 PART I bring H935 him not H3808 NADV unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , and set H3322 him before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee , then let me bear the blame H2398 forever H3117 D-NMP :
10 For H3588 CONJ except H3884 we had lingered H4102 , surely H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV we had returned H7725 this H2088 DPRO second time H6471 .
11 And their father H1 CMS-3MP Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , If H518 PART it must be so H3651 ADV now H645 CONJ , do H6213 this H2063 DPRO ; take H3947 of the best fruits H2173 in the land H776 D-GFS in your vessels H3627 , and carry down H3381 the man H376 a present H4503 NFS , a little H4592 AMS balm H6875 , and a little H4592 honey H1706 NMS , spices H5219 , and myrrh H3910 , nuts H992 , and almonds H8247 :
12 And take H3947 double H4932 money H3701 W-CMS in your hand H3027 ; and the money H3701 that was brought again H7725 in the mouth H6310 B-CMS of your sacks H572 , carry it again H7725 in your hand H3027 ; peradventure H194 ADV it H1931 PPRO-3MS was an oversight H4870 :
13 Take H3947 also your brother H251 , and arise H6965 , go again H7725 unto H413 PREP the man H376 :
14 And God H410 W-NMS Almighty H7706 EDS give H5414 VHFA you mercy H7356 before H6440 L-CMP the man H376 D-NMS , that he may send away H7971 your other H312 AMS brother H251 , and Benjamin H1144 . If H834 K-RPRO I H589 W-PPRO-1MS be bereaved H7921 of my children , I am bereaved H7921 .
15 And the men H376 took H3947 W-VQY3MP that H2063 D-DFS present H4503 , and they took H3947 double H4932 money H3701 NMS in their hand H3027 B-CFS-3MP , and Benjamin H1144 ; and rose up H6965 , and went down H3381 to Egypt H4714 EFS , and stood H5975 before H6440 L-CMP Joseph H3130 .
16 And when Joseph H3130 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS Benjamin H1144 with H854 PREP-3MP them , he said H559 W-VQY3MS to the ruler of his house H1004 NMS-3MS , Bring H935 these men H376 home H1004 , and slay H2873 , and make ready H3559 ; for H3588 CONJ these men H376 shall dine H398 with H854 PREP-1MS me at noon H6672 .
17 And the man H376 D-NMS did H6213 W-VQY3MS as H834 Joseph H3130 bade H559 VQQ3MS ; and the man H376 D-NMS brought H935 W-VHY3MS the men H376 D-NMS into Joseph H3130 \'s house H1004 .
18 And the men H376 were afraid H3372 W-VQY3MP , because H3588 CONJ they were brought H935 into Joseph H3130 \'s house H1004 CMS ; and they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Because of PREP the money H3701 that was returned H7725 in our sacks H572 at the first time H8462 BD-NFS are we H587 PPRO-1MP brought in H935 ; that he may seek occasion H1556 against H5921 PREP us , and fall H5307 upon H5921 PREP us , and take H3947 us for bondmen H5650 , and our asses H2543 .
19 And they came near H5066 to H413 PREP the steward H376 D-NMS of Joseph H3130 \'s house H1004 CMS , and they communed H1696 W-VPY3MP with H413 PREP-3MS him at the door H6607 CMS of the house H1004 ,
20 And said H559 W-VQY3MP , O H994 sir H113 , we came indeed down H3381 at the first time H8462 BD-NFS to buy H7666 food H400 NMS :
21 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when H3588 CONJ we came H935 to H413 PREP the inn H4411 , that we opened H6605 our sacks H572 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , every man H376 NMS \'s money H3701 was in the mouth H6310 B-CMS of his sack H572 , our money H3701 in full weight H4948 : and we have brought it again H7725 in our hand H3027 .
22 And other H312 AMS money H3701 W-CMS have we brought down H3381 in our hands H3027 to buy H7666 food H400 NMS : we cannot H3808 NADV tell H3045 who H4310 IPRO put H7760 VQQ3MS our money H3701 in our sacks H572 .
23 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Peace H7965 NMS be to you , fear H3372 not H408 NPAR : your God H430 , and the God H430 of your father H1 , hath given H5414 VQQ3MS you treasure H4301 in your sacks H572 : I had H935 VQPMS your money H3701 . And he brought Simeon out H3318 unto H413 them .
24 And the man H376 D-NMS brought H935 W-VHY3MS the men H376 D-NMS into Joseph H3130 \'s house H1004 , and gave H5414 W-VQY3MS them water H4325 OMD , and they washed H7364 their feet H7272 CFD-3MP ; and he gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS their asses H2543 provender H4554 .
25 And they made ready H3559 the present H4503 against H5704 PREP Joseph H3130 came H935 VQFC at noon H6672 : for H3588 CONJ they heard H8085 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ they should eat H398 bread H3899 NMS there H8033 ADV .
26 And when Joseph H3130 came H935 W-VQY3MS home H1004 , they brought H935 him the present H4503 which H834 RPRO was in their hand H3027 into the house H1004 , and bowed themselves H7812 to him to the earth H776 NFS-3FS .
27 And he asked H7592 W-VQY3MS them of their welfare H7965 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is your father H1 well H7965 , the old man H2205 of whom H834 RPRO ye spoke H559 W-VQY3MS ? Is he yet H5750 alive H2416 AMS ?
28 And they answered H559 W-VQY3MP , Thy servant H5650 our father H1 is in good health H7965 NMS , he is yet H5750 alive H2416 AMS . And they bowed down their heads H6915 , and made obeisance H7812 .
29 And he lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , and saw H7200 W-VIY3MS his brother H251 CMS-3MS Benjamin H1144 , his mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s son H1121 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is this H2088 your younger H6996 D-AMS brother H251 , of whom H834 RPRO ye spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 me ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , God H430 EDP be gracious H2603 unto thee , my son H1121 .
30 And Joseph H3130 made haste H4116 ; for H3588 CONJ his bowels H7356 did yearn H3648 upon H413 PREP his brother H251 CMS-3MS : and he sought H1245 where to weep H1058 ; and he entered into H935 W-VQY3MS his chamber H2315 , and wept H1058 there H8033 .
31 And he washed H7364 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and went out H3318 W-VQY3MS , and refrained himself H662 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Set on H7760 bread H3899 NMS .
32 And they set on H7760 W-VQY3MP for him by himself H905 L-CMS-3MS , and for them by themselves H905 L-CMS-3MP , and for the Egyptians H4713 , which did eat H398 with H854 PREP-3MS him , by themselves H905 L-CMS-3MP : because H3588 CONJ the Egyptians H4713 D-TMP might H3201 not H3808 NADV eat H398 L-VQFC bread H3899 NMS with H854 PREP the Hebrews H5680 ; for H3588 CONJ that H1931 PPRO-3FS is an abomination H8441 unto the Egyptians H4714 .
33 And they sat H3427 W-VQY3MP before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him , the firstborn H1060 according to his birthright H1062 , and the youngest H6810 according to his youth H6812 : and the men H376 NMS marveled H8539 one H376 NMS at H413 PREP another H7453 CMS-3MS .
34 And he took H5375 W-VQY3MS and sent messes H4864 unto H413 PREP-3MS them from before H6440 CMP-3MS him : but Benjamin H1144 \'s mess H4864 was five times so much as any H3605 CMS-3MP of theirs . And they drank H8354 , and were merry H7937 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
