Job 20:12 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
2 "I must reply because I am greatly disturbed.
3 I've had to endure your insults, but now my spirit prompts me to reply.
4 "Don't you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,
5 the triumph of the wicked has been short-lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary?
6 Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heavens and their heads touch the clouds,
7 yet they will vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. Those who knew them will ask, 'Where are they?'
8 They will fade like a dream and not be found. They will vanish like a vision in the night.
9 Those who once saw them will see them no more. Their families will never see them again.
10 Their children will beg from the poor, for they must give back their stolen riches.
11 Though they are young, their bones will lie in the dust.
12 "They enjoyed the sweet taste of wickedness, letting it melt under their tongue.
13 They savored it, holding it long in their mouths.
14 But suddenly the food in their bellies turns sour, a poisonous venom in their stomach.
15 They will vomit the wealth they swallowed. God won't let them keep it down.
16 They will suck the poison of cobras. The viper will kill them.
17 They will never again enjoy streams of olive oil or rivers of milk and honey.
18 They will give back everything they worked for. Their wealth will bring them no joy.
19 For they oppressed the poor and left them destitute. They foreclosed on their homes.
20 They were always greedy and never satisfied. Nothing remains of all the things they dreamed about.
21 Nothing is left after they finish gorging themselves. Therefore, their prosperity will not endure.
22 "In the midst of plenty, they will run into trouble and be overcome by misery.
23 May God give them a bellyful of trouble. May God rain down his anger upon them.
24 When they try to escape an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow will pierce them.
25 The arrow is pulled from their back, and the arrowhead glistens with blood. The terrors of death are upon them.
26 Their treasures will be thrown into deepest darkness. A wildfire will devour their goods, consuming all they have left.
27 The heavens will reveal their guilt, and the earth will testify against them.
28 A flood will sweep away their house. God's anger will descend on them in torrents.
29 This is the reward that God gives the wicked. It is the inheritance decreed by God."

4 Knowest H3045 VQQ2MS thou not this H2063 D-PFS of H4480 PREP-1MS old H5703 NMS , since H4480 PREP-1MS man H120 NMS was placed H7760 VQFC upon H5921 PREP earth H776 GFS ,
5 That H3588 CONJ the triumphing H7445 CFS of the wicked H7563 AMP is short H7138 M-AMS , and the joy H8057 W-CFS of the hypocrite H2611 NMS but for H5704 PREP a moment H7281 NMS ?
6 Though H518 PART his excellency H7863 CMS-3MS mount up H5927 VQY3MS to the heavens H8064 LD-NMP , and his head H7218 W-CMS-3MS reach H5060 VHY3MS unto the clouds H5645 LD-NMS ;
7 Yet he shall perish H6 VQY3MS forever H5331 L-NMS like his own dung H1561 K-CMS-3MS : they which have seen H7200 VQCMS-3MS him shall say H559 VQY3MP , Where H335 IGAT-3MS is he ?
8 He shall fly away H5774 VQY3MS as a dream H2472 KD-NMS , and shall not H3808 W-NPAR be found H4672 VQY3MP-3MS : yea , he shall be chased away H5074 W-VOY3MS as a vision H2384 K-CMS of the night H3915 NMS .
9 The eye H5869 NMS also which saw H7805 VQQ3FS-3MS him shall see him no H3808 W-NPAR more H3254 VHY3FS ; neither H3808 W-NPAR shall his place H4725 M-CMS-3MS any more H5750 ADV behold H7789 VQY3FS-3MS him .
10 His children H1121 CMP-3MS shall seek to please H7521 VPY3MP the poor H1800 AMP , and his hands H3027 W-CFD-3MS shall restore H7725 VHY3FP their goods H202 CMS-3MS .
11 His bones H6106 CFP-3MS are full H4390 VQQ3MP of the sin of his youth H5934 CMS-3MS , which shall lie down H7901 VQY2MS with H5973 W-PREP-3MS him in H5921 PREP the dust H6083 NMS .
12 Though H518 PART wickedness H7451 AFS be sweet H4985 VHY3FS in his mouth H6310 B-CMS-3MS , though he hide H3582 VHY3MS-3FS it under H8478 NMS his tongue H3956 L-CMS-3MS ;
13 Though he spare H2550 VQY3MS it , and forsake H5800 VQY3MS-3FS it not H3808 W-NPAR ; but keep it still H4513 W-VQY3MS-3FS within H8432 B-NMS his mouth H2441 CMS-3MS :
14 Yet his meat H3899 CMS-3MS in his bowels H4578 B-CMP-3MS is turned H2015 VNQ3MS , it is the gall H4846 CFS of asps H6620 NMP within H7130 B-CMS-3MS him .
15 He hath swallowed down H1104 VQQ3MS riches H2428 NMS , and he shall vomit them up again H6958 W-VHY3MS-3MS : God H410 NMS shall cast them out H3423 VHY3MS-3MS of H4480 his belly H990 M-CFS-3MS .
16 He shall suck H3243 VQY3MS the poison H7219 CMS of asps H6620 NMP : the viper H660 NMS \'s tongue H3956 L-CMS shall slay H2026 VQY3MS-3MS him .
17 He shall not H408 NPAR see H7200 VQI3MS the rivers H6390 B-NFP , the floods H5104 CMP , the brooks H5158 CMP of honey H1706 NMS and butter H2529 W-NFS .
18 That which he labored for H3022 NMS shall he restore H7725 VHPMS , and shall not H3808 W-NPAR swallow it down H1104 VQY3MS : according to his substance H2428 K-CMS shall the restitution H8545 CFS-3MS be , and he shall not H3808 W-NPAR rejoice H5965 VQY3MS therein .
19 Because H3588 CONJ he hath oppressed H7533 VPQ3MS and hath forsaken H5800 VQQ3MS the poor H1800 JMP ; because he hath violently taken away H1497 VQQ3MS a house H1004 NMS which he built H1129 VQY3MS-3MS not H3808 W-NPAR ;
20 Surely H3588 CONJ he shall not H3808 NPAR feel H3045 VQQ3MS quietness H7961 AMS in his belly H990 B-CFS-3MS , he shall not H3808 NPAR save H4422 VPY3MS of that which he desired H2530 BD-VWCMS-3MS .
21 There shall none H369 NPAR of his meat H400 L-VQFC-3MS be left H8300 NMS ; therefore H3651 ADV shall no H3808 NADV man look H2342 VQY3MS for his goods H2898 CMS-3MS .
22 In the fullness H4390 B-VQFC of his sufficiency H5607 CMS-3MS he shall be in straits H3334 VQY3MS : every H3605 NMS hand H3027 CFS of the wicked H6001 NMS shall come H935 VQY3MS-3MS upon him .
23 When he H1961 VPY3MS is about to fill H4390 L-VPFC his belly H990 CFS-3MS , God shall cast H7971 VPY3MS the fury H2740 CMS of his wrath H639 CMS-3MS upon him , and shall rain H4305 W-VHI3MS it upon H5921 PREP-3MP him while he is eating H3894 B-CMS-3MS .
24 He shall flee H1272 VQY3MS from the iron H1270 NMS weapon H5402 M-CMS , and the bow H7198 CFS of steel H5154 NFS shall strike him through H2498 VQY3FS-3MS .
25 It is drawn H8025 VQQ3MS , and cometh out H3318 W-VQY3MS of the body H1465 M-NFS ; yea , the glittering sword H1300 W-NMS cometh H1980 VQY3MS out of his gall H4846 M-CFS-3MS : terrors H367 NFP are upon H5921 PREP-3MS him .
26 All H3605 NMS darkness H2822 NMS shall be hid H2934 VWPMS in his secret places H6845 L-VWCMP-3MS : a fire H784 CMS not H3808 ADV blown H5301 VUQ3MS shall consume H398 VQY3FS-3MS him ; it shall go ill H7489 with him that is left H8300 NMS in his tabernacle H168 B-CMS-3MS .
27 The heaven H8064 NMP shall reveal H1540 VPY3MP his iniquity H5771 CMS-3MS ; and the earth H776 W-NFS shall rise up H6965 VTPFS against him .
28 The increase H2981 CMS of his house H1004 NMS-3MS shall depart H1540 VQI3MS , and his goods shall flow away H5064 VNPFP in the day H3117 B-NMS of his wrath H639 CMS-3MS .
29 This H2088 DPRO is the portion H2506 NMS of a wicked H7563 AMS man H120 NMS from God H430 M-NMP , and the heritage H5159 W-CFS appointed H561 CMS-3MS unto him by God H410 M-NMS .
