Luke 6:40 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain.
2 But some Pharisees said, "Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?"
3 Jesus replied, "Haven't you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
4 He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions."
5 And Jesus added, "The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath."
6 On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching.
7 The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
8 But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come and stand in front of everyone." So the man came forward.
9 Then Jesus said to his critics, "I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?"
10 He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, "Hold out your hand." So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
11 At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him.
12 One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.
13 At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names:
14 Simon (whom he named Peter), Andrew (Peter's brother), James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
15 Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the zealot),
16 Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
17 When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon.
18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and Jesus also cast out many evil spirits.
19 Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.
20 Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, "God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.
21 God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.
22 What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.
23 When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.
24 "What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.
25 What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.
26 What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.
27 "But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.
28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.
29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.
30 Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don't try to get them back.
31 Do to others as you would like them to do to you.
32 "If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!
33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!
34 And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return.
35 "Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.
36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
37 "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.
38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full-- pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. "
39 Then Jesus gave the following illustration: "Can one blind person lead another? Won't they both fall into a ditch?
40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
41 "And why worry about a speck in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own?
42 How can you think of saying, 'Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,' when you can't see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend's eye.
43 "A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.
44 A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs never grow on thornbushes, nor grapes on bramble bushes.
45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.
46 "So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say?
47 I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.
48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built.
49 But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins."

3 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answering G611 V-AOP-NSM them G846 P-APM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Have ye not read so much as ADV this G5124 D-ASN , what G3739 R-ASN David G1138 N-PRI did G4160 V-AAI-3S , when G3698 ADV himself G846 P-NSM was hungry G3983 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM which G3588 T-NPM were G5607 V-PXP-NPM with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM ;

5 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , That G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S Lord G2962 N-NSM also G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN sabbath G4521 N-GSN .
6 And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S also G2532 CONJ on G1722 PREP another G2087 A-DSN sabbath G4521 N-DSN , that he G846 P-ASM entered G1525 V-2AAN into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF synagogue G4864 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ taught G1321 V-PAN : and G2532 CONJ there G1563 ADV was G2258 V-IXI-3S a man G444 N-NSM whose G846 P-GSM right G1188 A-NSF hand G5495 N-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S withered G3584 A-NSF .
7 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-NPM watched G3906 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-GSM , whether G1487 COND he would heal G2323 V-FAI-3S on G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN sabbath day G4521 N-DSN ; that G2443 CONJ they might find G2147 V-2AAS-3P an accusation G2724 N-ASF against him G846 P-GSM .
8 But G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM knew G1492 V-LAI-3S their G3588 T-APM thoughts G1261 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S to the G3588 T-DSM man G444 N-DSM which G3588 T-DSM had G2192 V-PAP-DSM the G3588 T-ASF withered G3584 N-ASF hand G5495 N-ASF , Rise up G1453 V-AMM-2S , and G2532 CONJ stand forth G2476 V-2AAM-2S in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN midst G3319 A-ASN . And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-DSM arose G450 V-2AAP-NSM and stood forth G2476 V-2AAI-3S .
9 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , I will ask G1905 V-FAI-1S you G5209 P-2AP one thing G5101 I-NSN ; Is it lawful G1832 V-PQI-3S on the G3588 T-DPN sabbath days G4521 N-DPN to do good G15 V-AAN , or G2228 PRT to do evil G2554 V-AAN ? to save G4982 V-AAN life G5590 N-ASF , or G2228 PRT to destroy G622 it ?
10 And G2532 CONJ looking round about upon G4017 V-AMP-NSM them G846 P-APM all G3956 A-APM , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto the G3588 T-ASF man G444 , Stretch forth G1614 V-AAM-2S thy G3588 T-ASF hand G5495 N-ASF . And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM did G4160 V-AAI-3S so G3779 : and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF hand G5495 N-NSF was restored G600 V-API-3S whole G5199 A-NSF as G5613 ADV the G3588 T-NSF other G243 A-NSF .
11 And G1161 CONJ they G846 P-NPM were filled G4130 V-API-3P with madness G454 N-GSF ; and G2532 CONJ communed G1255 V-IAI-3P one with another G240 C-APM what G5101 I-ASN they G3588 T-DSM might do G4160 V-AAO-3P to Jesus G2424 N-DSM .
12 And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S in G1722 PREP those G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF , that he went out G1831 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP a mountain G3735 N-ASN to pray G4336 V-ADN , and G2532 CONJ continued all night G1273 V-PAP-NSM in G1722 PREP prayer G4335 N-DSF to God G2316 N-GSM .
13 And G2532 CONJ when G3753 ADV it was G1096 V-2ADI-3S day G2250 N-NSF , he called G4377 V-AAI-3S unto him G3588 T-APM his G3588 T-APM disciples G3101 N-APM : and G2532 CONJ of G575 PREP them G846 P-GSM he chose G1586 V-AMP-NSM twelve G1427 A-NUI , whom G3739 R-APM also G2532 CONJ he named G3687 V-AAI-3S apostles G652 N-APM ;
14 Simon G4613 N-ASM , ( R-ASM whom G3739 R-ASM he also G2532 CONJ named G3687 V-AAI-3S Peter G4074 N-ASM , ) and G2532 CONJ Andrew G406 N-ASM his G3588 T-ASM brother G80 N-ASM , James G2385 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ John G2491 N-ASM , Philip G5376 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ Bartholomew G918 N-ASM ,
15 Matthew G3156 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ Thomas G2381 N-ASM , James G2385 N-ASM the G3588 T-ASM son of Alphaeus G256 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ Simon G4613 N-ASM called G2564 V-PPP-ASM Zelotes G2208 ,
16 And Judas G2455 N-ASM the brother of James G2385 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ Judas G2455 N-ASM Iscariot G2469 N-ASM , which G3739 R-NSM also G2532 CONJ was G1096 V-2ADI-3S the traitor G4273 N-NSM .

19 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM whole G3956 A-NSM multitude G3793 N-NSM sought G2212 V-IAI-3S to touch G680 V-PMN him G846 P-GSM : for G3754 CONJ there went virtue out G1831 V-INI-3S of G3844 PREP him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ healed G2390 V-INI-3S them all G3956 A-APM .
20 And G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM lifted up G1869 V-AAP-NSM his G3588 T-APM eyes G3788 N-APM on G1519 PREP his G3588 T-APM disciples G3101 N-APM , and said G3004 V-IAI-3S , Blessed G3107 A-NPM be ye poor G4434 A-NPM : for G3754 CONJ yours G5212 S-2NPF is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of God G2316 N-GSM .
21 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are ye G3588 T-NPM that hunger G3983 V-PAP-NPM now G3568 ADV : for G3754 CONJ ye shall be filled G5526 V-FPI-2P . Blessed G3107 A-NPM are ye G3588 T-NPM that weep G2799 V-PAP-NPM now G3568 ADV : for G3754 CONJ ye shall laugh G1070 V-FAI-2P .
22 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are G2075 V-PXI-2P ye G3588 T-NPM , when G3752 CONJ men G444 N-NPM shall hate G3404 V-AAS-3P you G5209 P-2AP , and G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ they shall separate G873 V-AAS-3P you G5209 P-2AP from their company , and G2532 CONJ shall reproach G3679 V-AAS-3P you , and G2532 CONJ cast out G1544 V-2AAS-3P your G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN as G5613 ADV evil G4190 A-ASN , for the Son of man\'s sake G1752 ADV .
23 Rejoice G5463 V-2AOM-2P ye in G1722 PREP that G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ leap for joy G4640 V-AAM-2P : for G1063 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , your G3588 T-NSM reward G3408 N-NSM is great G4183 A-NSM in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM : for G1063 CONJ in the like manner G2596 PREP did G4160 V-IAI-3P their G3588 T-NPM fathers G3962 N-NPM unto the G3588 T-DPM prophets G4396 N-DPM .
24 But G4133 ADV woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 P-2DP that G3588 T-DPM are rich G4145 A-DPM ! for G3754 CONJ ye have received G568 V-PAI-2P your G3588 T-ASF consolation G3874 N-ASF .
25 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G3588 T-NPM that are full G1705 V-RPP-NPM for G3754 CONJ ye shall hunger G3983 V-FAI-2P . Woe G3759 INJ unto you G3588 T-NPM that laugh G1070 V-PAP-NPM now G3568 ADV ! for G3754 CONJ ye shall mourn G3996 V-FAI-2P and G2532 CONJ weep G2799 V-FAI-2P .
26 Woe G3759 INJ unto you G5213 , when G3752 CONJ all G3956 men G444 N-NPM shall speak G2036 well G2573 of you G5209 P-2AP ! for G1063 CONJ so G2596 PREP did G4160 V-IAI-3P their G3588 T-NPM fathers G3962 N-NPM to the G3588 T-DPM false prophets G5578 N-DPM .
27 But G235 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G3588 T-DPM which hear G191 V-PAP-DPM , Love G25 V-PAM-2P your G3588 T-APM enemies G2190 A-APM , do G4160 V-PAM-2P good G2573 ADV to them which hate G3404 V-PAP-DPM you G5209 P-2AP ,
28 Bless G2127 V-PAM-2P them that curse G2672 V-PNP-APM you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 pray G4336 V-PNM-2P for G3588 T-GPM them which despitefully use G1908 V-PAP-GPM you G5209 P-2AP .
29 And unto him that smiteth G5180 V-PAP-DSM thee G4571 P-2AS on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF one cheek G4600 N-ASF offer G3930 V-PAM-2S also G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF other G243 A-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ him that taketh away G142 V-PAP-GSM thy G3588 T-ASN cloak G2440 N-ASN forbid G2967 V-AAS-2S not G3361 PRT-N to take thy coat G5509 N-ASM also G2532 CONJ .
30 Give G1325 V-PAM-2S to every man G3956 A-DSM that asketh G154 V-PAP-DSM of thee G4571 P-2AS ; and G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GSM him G3588 T-APN that G3588 T-APN taketh away G142 V-PAP-GSM thy goods G4674 S-2APN ask them not again G523 V-PAM-2S .
31 And G2532 CONJ as G2531 ADV ye would G2309 V-PAI-2P that G3588 T-NPM men G444 N-NPM should do G4160 V-PAS-3P to you G5213 P-2DP , do G4160 V-PAM-2P ye G5210 P-2NP also G2532 CONJ to them G846 P-DPM likewise G3668 ADV .
32 For G2532 CONJ if G1487 COND ye G3588 T-APM love G25 V-PAI-2P them which love G25 V-PAP-APM you G5209 P-2AP , what G4169 I-NSF thank G5485 N-NSF have G2076 V-PXI-3S ye G5213 P-2DP ? for G3588 T-NPM sinners G268 A-NPM also G2532 CONJ love G25 V-PAP-APM those that love G25 V-PAI-3P them G846 P-APM .
33 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND ye do good G15 V-PAS-2P to them which do good G15 V-PAP-APM to you G5209 P-2AP , what G4169 I-NSF thank G5485 N-NSF have G2076 V-PXI-3S ye G5213 P-2DP ? for G3588 T-NPM sinners G268 A-NPM also G2532 CONJ do G4160 V-PAI-3P even G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN same G846 P-ASN .
34 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND ye lend G1155 V-PAS-2P to them of G3844 PREP whom G3739 R-GPM ye hope G1679 V-PAI-2P to receive G618 V-2AAN , what G4169 I-NSF thank G5485 N-NSF have G2076 V-PXI-3S ye G5213 P-2DP ? for G1063 CONJ sinners G268 A-NPM also G2532 CONJ lend G1155 V-PAI-3P to sinners G268 A-DPM , to G2443 CONJ receive G618 V-2AAS-3P as much again G2470 A-APN .
35 But G4133 ADV love G25 V-PAM-2P ye G3588 T-APM your G3588 T-APM enemies G2190 A-APM , and G2532 CONJ do good G15 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ lend G1155 V-PAM-2P , hoping for nothing again G560 V-PAP-NPM ; and G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NSM reward G3408 N-NSM shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S great G4183 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ ye shall be G2071 V-FXI-2P the children G5207 N-NPM of the G3588 T-APM Highest G5310 A-GSM : for G3754 CONJ he G846 P-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S kind G5543 A-NSM unto G1909 PREP the G3588 T-APM unthankful G884 A-APM and G2532 CONJ to the evil G4190 A-APM .
36 Be G1096 V-PNM-2P ye therefore G3767 CONJ merciful G3629 A-NPM , as G2531 ADV your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM also G2532 CONJ is G2076 V-PXI-3S merciful G3629 A-NSM .
37 Judge G2919 V-PAM-2P not G3361 PRT-N , and G2532 CONJ ye shall not G3364 be judged G2919 V-APS-2P : condemn G2613 V-PAM-2P not G3361 PRT-N , and G2532 CONJ ye shall not G3364 be condemned G2613 V-APS-2P : forgive G630 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ ye shall be forgiven G630 V-FPI-2P :
38 Give G1325 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ it shall be given G1325 V-FPI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP , good G2570 A-ASN measure G3358 N-ASN , pressed down G4085 V-RPP-ASN , and G2532 CONJ shaken together G4531 V-RPP-ASN , and G2532 CONJ running over G5240 V-PPP-ASN , shall men give G1325 V-FAI-3P into G1519 PREP your G3588 T-ASM bosom G2859 N-ASM . For G1063 CONJ with the G3588 T-ASM same G846 P-DSN measure G3358 N-DSN that G3739 R-DSN ye mete G3354 V-PAI-2P withal it shall be measured to you again G488 V-FPI-3S .
39 And G1161 CONJ he spake G2036 V-2AAI-3S a parable G3850 N-ASF unto them G846 P-DPM , Can V-PNI-3S the blind G5185 A-NSM lead G3594 V-PAN the blind G5185 A-ASM ? shall they not G3780 PRT-I both G297 A-NPM fall G4098 V-FNI-3P into G1519 PREP the ditch G999 N-ASM ?
40 The disciple G3101 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N above G5228 PREP his G3588 T-ASM master G1320 N-ASM : but G1161 CONJ every one G3956 A-NSM that is perfect G2675 V-RPP-NSM shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S as G5613 ADV his G3588 T-NSM master G1320 N-NSM .
41 And G1161 CONJ why G5101 I-ASN beholdest G991 V-PAI-2S thou the G3588 T-ASN mote G2595 N-ASN that G3588 T-ASN is in G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-GSM brother G80 N-GSM \'s eye G3788 N-DSM , but G1161 CONJ perceivest G2657 V-PAI-2S not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-DSM beam G1385 N-ASF that G3588 T-ASF is in G1722 PREP thine own G2398 A-DSM eye G3788 N-DSM ?
