Numbers 36:4 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then the heads of the clans of Gilead-- descendants of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph-- came to Moses and the family leaders of Israel with a petition.
2 They said, "Sir, the LORD instructed you to divide the land by sacred lot among the people of Israel. You were told by the LORD to give the grant of land owned by our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
3 But if they marry men from another tribe, their grants of land will go with them to the tribe into which they marry. In this way, the total area of our tribal land will be reduced.
4 Then when the Year of Jubilee comes, their portion of land will be added to that of the new tribe, causing it to be lost forever to our ancestral tribe."
5 So Moses gave the Israelites this command from the LORD: "The claim of the men of the tribe of Joseph is legitimate.
6 This is what the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them marry anyone they like, as long as it is within their own ancestral tribe.
7 None of the territorial land may pass from tribe to tribe, for all the land given to each tribe must remain within the tribe to which it was first allotted.
8 The daughters throughout the tribes of Israel who are in line to inherit property must marry within their tribe, so that all the Israelites will keep their ancestral property.
9 No grant of land may pass from one tribe to another; each tribe of Israel must keep its allotted portion of land."
10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses.
11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah all married cousins on their father's side.
12 They married into the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Thus, their inheritance of land remained within their ancestral tribe.
13 These are the commands and regulations that the LORD gave to the people of Israel through Moses while they were camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River across from Jericho.
1 And the chief H7218 CMP fathers H1 of the families H4940 of the children H1121 of Gilead H1568 , the son H1121 L-CMP of Machir H4353 , the son H1121 of Manasseh H4519 , of the families H4940 of the sons H1121 of Joseph H3130 , came near H7126 , and spoke H1696 before H6440 L-CMP Moses H4872 , and before H6440 L-CMP the princes H5387 , the chief H7218 CMP fathers H1 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS :
2 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , The LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS my lord H113 to give H5414 L-VQFC the land H776 D-GFS for an inheritance H5159 by lot H1486 to the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 : and my lord H113 was commanded H6680 by the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS to give H5414 L-VQFC the inheritance H5159 of Zelophehad H6765 our brother H251 unto his daughters H1323 .
3 And if they be married H1961 W-VQQ3MS to any H259 of the sons H1121 of the other tribes H7626 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , then shall their inheritance H5159 be taken H1639 from the inheritance H5159 of our fathers H1 , and shall be put H3254 to H5921 PREP the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 whereunto H834 RPRO they are received H1961 : so shall it be taken H1639 from the lot H1486 of our inheritance H5159 .
4 And when H518 W-PART the jubilee H3104 of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 shall be H1961 VQY3MS , then shall their inheritance H5159 be put H3254 unto H5921 PREP the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 whereunto H834 RPRO they are received H1961 : so shall their inheritance H5159 be taken away H1639 from the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 of our fathers H1 .
5 And Moses H4872 commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 according to H5921 PREP the word H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The tribe H4294 of the sons H1121 of Joseph H3130 hath said H1696 well H3651 ADV .
6 This H2088 DPRO is the thing H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS doth command H6680 VPQ3MS concerning the daughters H1323 L-CFP of Zelophehad H6765 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let them marry H1961 to whom they think best H2896 ; only H389 ADV to the family H4940 of the tribe H4294 of their father H1 CMS-3MP shall they marry H1961 .
7 So shall not H3808 W-NPAR the inheritance H5159 NFS of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 remove H5437 from tribe H4294 to H413 PREP tribe H4294 : for H3588 CONJ every one H376 NMS of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 LMS shall keep H1692 himself to the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 of his fathers H1 .
8 And every H3605 W-CMS daughter H1323 CFS , that possesseth H3423 an inheritance H5159 NFS in any tribe H4294 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , shall be H1961 VQY3FS wife H802 L-NFS unto one H259 of the family H4940 M-CFS of the tribe H4294 of her father H1 , that H4616 L-CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 may enjoy H3423 every man H376 NMS the inheritance H5159 of his fathers H1 .
9 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shall the inheritance H5159 NFS remove H5437 from one tribe H4294 to another H312 AMS tribe H4294 ; but H3588 CONJ every one H376 NMS of the tribes H4294 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS shall keep H1692 himself to his own inheritance H5159 .
10 Even as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 , so H3651 ADV did H6213 VQQ3MP the daughters H1323 CFP of Zelophehad H6765 :
11 For Mahlah H4244 , Tirzah H8656 , and Hoglah H2295 , and Milcah H4435 , and Noah H5270 , the daughters H1323 CFP of Zelophehad H6765 , were married H1961 unto their father\'s brothers H1730 \' sons H1121 L-CMP :
12 And they were married H1961 VQQ3MP into the families H4940 of the sons H1121 of Manasseh H4519 the son H1121 CMS of Joseph H3130 , and their inheritance H5159 remained H1961 W-VQY3FS in H5921 PREP the tribe H4294 of the family H4940 of their father H1 .
13 These H428 PMP are the commandments H4687 and the judgments H4941 , which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS by the hand H3027 B-CFS of Moses H4872 unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 by H5921 PREP Jordan H3383 LFS near Jericho H3405 .
