1 Kings 9:2 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 So Solomon finished building the Temple of the LORD, as well as the royal palace. He completed everything he had planned to do.
2 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had done before at Gibeon.
3 The LORD said to him, "I have heard your prayer and your petition. I have set this Temple apart to be holy-- this place you have built where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.
4 "As for you, if you will follow me with integrity and godliness, as David your father did, obeying all my commands, decrees, and regulations,
5 then I will establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel forever. For I made this promise to your father, David: 'One of your descendants will always sit on the throne of Israel.'
6 "But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the commands and decrees I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods,
7 then I will uproot Israel from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name. I will make Israel an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.
8 And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads in amazement. They will ask, 'Why did the LORD do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?'
9 "And the answer will be, 'Because his people abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why the LORD has brought all these disasters on them.'"
10 It took Solomon twenty years to build the LORD's Temple and his own royal palace. At the end of that time,
11 he gave twenty towns in the land of Galilee to King Hiram of Tyre. (Hiram had previously provided all the cedar and cypress timber and gold that Solomon had requested.)
12 But when Hiram came from Tyre to see the towns Solomon had given him, he was not at all pleased with them.
13 "What kind of towns are these, my brother?" he asked. So Hiram called that area Cabul (which means "worthless"), as it is still known today.
14 Nevertheless, Hiram paid Solomon 9,000 pounds of gold.
15 This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's Temple, the royal palace, the supporting terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.
16 (Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gezer, killing the Canaanite population and burning it down. He gave the city to his daughter as a wedding gift when she married Solomon.
17 So Solomon rebuilt the city of Gezer.) He also built up the towns of Lower Beth-horon,
18 Baalath, and Tamar in the wilderness within his land.
19 He built towns as supply centers and constructed towns where his chariots and horses could be stationed. He built everything he desired in Jerusalem and Lebanon and throughout his entire realm.
20 There were still some people living in the land who were not Israelites, including Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
21 These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them for his labor force, and they serve in the labor force to this day.
22 But Solomon did not conscript any of the Israelites for forced labor. Instead, he assigned them to serve as fighting men, government officials, officers and captains in his army, commanders of his chariots, and charioteers.
23 Solomon appointed 550 of them to supervise the people working on his various projects.
24 Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh's daughter, from the City of David to the new palace he had built for her. Then he constructed the supporting terraces.
25 Three times each year Solomon presented burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD. He also burned incense to the LORD. And so he finished the work of building the Temple.
26 King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, a port near Elath in the land of Edom, along the shore of the Red Sea.
27 Hiram sent experienced crews of sailors to sail the ships with Solomon's men.
28 They sailed to Ophir and brought back to Solomon some sixteen tons of gold.

2 That the LORD H3068 EDS appeared H7200 W-VNY3MS to H413 PREP Solomon H8010 MMS the second time H8145 CFS , as H834 K-RPRO he had appeared H7200 unto H413 PREP-3MS him at Gibeon H1391 .
3 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS thy prayer H8605 and thy supplication H8467 , that H834 RPRO thou hast made H2063 before H6440 L-CMP me : I have hallowed H6942 this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS , which H834 RPRO thou hast built H1129 , to put H7760 my name H8034 there H8033 ADV forever H5704 PREP ; and mine eyes H5869 CMD-1MS and mine heart H3820 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS there H8033 ADV perpetually H3605 NMS .
4 And if H518 PART thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS wilt walk H1980 VQY2MS before H6440 L-CMP me , as H834 RPRO David H1732 MMS thy father H1 NMS walked H1980 VQQ3MS , in integrity H8537 of heart H3824 NMS , and in uprightness H3476 , to do H6213 L-VQFC according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO I have commanded H6680 VPQ1MS-2MS thee , and wilt keep H8104 VQY2MS my statutes H2706 and my judgments H4941 :
5 Then I will establish H6965 W-VHQ1MS the throne H3678 of thy kingdom H4467 upon H5921 PREP Israel H3478 forever H5769 L-NMS , as H834 K-RPRO I promised H1696 VPQ1MS to H5921 PREP David H1732 MMS thy father H1 NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , There shall not H3808 ADV fail H3772 VNI3MS thee a man H376 NMS upon H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of Israel H3478 LMS .
6 But if H518 PART ye shall at all turn H7725 from following H310 me , ye H859 PPRO-2MS or your children H1121 , and will not H3808 W-NPAR keep H8104 my commandments H4687 and my statutes H2708 which H834 RPRO I have set H5414 VQQ1MS before H6440 you , but go H1980 and serve H5647 other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , and worship H7812 them :
7 Then will I cut off H3772 Israel H3478 out of M-PREP the land H127 D-NFS which H834 RPRO I have given H5414 VQQ1MS them ; and this house H1004 D-NMS , which H834 RPRO I have hallowed H6942 for my name H8034 , will I cast H7971 out of M-PREP my sight H6440 CMP ; and Israel H3478 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS a proverb H4912 and a byword H8148 among all H3605 B-CMS people H5971 :
8 And at this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 , which is H1961 VQY3MS high H5945 AMS , every one H3605 NMS that passeth H5674 by H5921 PREP-3MS it shall be astonished H8074 , and shall hiss H8319 ; and they shall say H559 W-VQQ3MP , Why H4100 IPRO hath the LORD H3068 EDS done H6213 VQQ3MS thus H3602 ADV unto this H2063 D-DFS land H776 LD-NFS , and to this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 ?
9 And they shall answer H559 W-VQQ3MP , Because H5921 PREP they forsook H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS their God H430 , who H834 RPRO brought forth VHQ3MS their fathers H1 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , and have taken hold H2388 upon other H312 AMP gods H430 , and have worshiped H7812 them , and served H5647 them : therefore H3651 ADV hath the LORD H3068 EDS brought H935 VHQ3MS upon H5921 PREP them all H3605 NMS this H2063 evil H7451 D-AFS .
10 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the end H7097 M-CMS of twenty H6242 years H8141 NFS , when H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 MMS had built H1129 VQQ3MS the two H8147 ONUM houses H1004 , the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and the king H4428 \'s house H1004 CMS ,
11 ( Now Hiram H2438 the king H4428 NMS of Tyre H6865 had furnished H5375 Solomon H8010 MMS with cedar H730 trees H6086 and fir H1265 trees H6086 , and with gold H2091 , according to all H3605 L-CMS his desire H2656 CMS-3MS , ) that then H227 ADV king H4428 NMS Solomon H8010 MMS gave H5414 VHFA Hiram H2438 twenty H6242 cities H5892 GFS in the land H776 B-GFS of Galilee H1551 .
12 And Hiram H2438 came out H3318 W-VQY3MS from Tyre H6865 to see H7200 L-VQFC the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 MMS had given H5414 VQQ3MS him ; and they pleased H3474 him not H3808 W-NPAR .
13 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IGAT cities H5892 are these H428 D-DPRO-3MP which H834 RPRO thou hast given H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS me , my brother H251 ? And he called H7121 W-VQY3MS them the land H776 GFS of Cabul H3521 unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
14 And Hiram H2438 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to the king H4428 sixscore H3967 MFS talents H3603 CFS of gold H2091 .
15 And this H2088 W-PMS is the reason H1697 NMS of the levy H4522 which H834 RPRO king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS raised H5927 ; for to build H1129 the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and his own house H1004 NMS-3MS , and Millo H4407 , and the wall H2346 of Jerusalem H3389 , and Hazor H2674 , and Megiddo H4023 , and Gezer H1507 .
16 For Pharaoh H6547 EMS king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS had gone up H5927 , and taken H3920 Gezer H1507 , and burnt H8313 it with fire H784 , and slain H2026 the Canaanites H3669 that dwelt H3427 D-VQPMS in the city H5892 BD-NFS , and given H5414 it for a present H7964 unto his daughter H1323 , Solomon H8010 \'s wife H802 CFS .
17 And Solomon H8010 MMS built H1129 W-VQY3MS Gezer H1507 , and Beth H1032 - horon the nether H8481 ,
18 And Baalath H1191 , and Tadmor H8412 in the wilderness H4057 , in the land H776 B-GFS ,
19 And all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 of store H4543 that H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 had H1961 VQQ3MP , and cities H5892 for his chariots H7393 , and cities H5892 for his horsemen H6571 , and that which H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 MMS desired H2836 to build H1129 in Jerusalem H3389 , and in Lebanon H3844 , and in all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of his dominion H4475 NFS-3MS .
20 And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that were left H3498 of H4480 PREP the Amorites H567 D-TMS , Hittites H2850 , Perizzites H6522 , Hivites H2340 , and Jebusites H2983 , which H834 RPRO were not H3808 ADV of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 ,
21 Their children H1121 that H834 RPRO were left H3498 after H310 them in the land H776 B-NFS , whom H834 RPRO the children H1121 of Israel H3478 also were not H3808 ADV able H3201 utterly to destroy H2763 , upon those did Solomon H8010 MMS levy H5927 a tribute of bondservice H5647 VQPMS unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
22 But of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did Solomon H8010 MMS make H5414 VQQ3MS no H3808 ADV bondmen H5650 : but H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP were men H376 CMP of war H4421 , and his servants H5650 W-CMS-3MS , and his princes H8269 , and his captains H7991 , and rulers H8269 of his chariots H7393 , and his horsemen H6571 .
23 These H428 PMP were the chief H8269 CMP of the officers H5324 that H834 RPRO were over H5921 PREP Solomon H8010 \'s work H4399 , five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP and fifty H2572 MMP , which bare rule H7287 over the people H5971 that wrought H6213 in the work H4399 .
24 But H389 ADV Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s daughter H1323 CFS came up H5927 out of the city H5892 M-NFS of David H1732 MMS unto H413 PREP her house H1004 which H834 RPRO Solomon had built H1129 for her : then H227 ADV did he build H1129 VQQ3MS Millo H4407 .
25 And three H7969 MFS times H6471 NFP in a year H8141 did Solomon H8010 MMS offer H5927 W-VHQ3MS burnt offerings H5930 CFP and peace offerings H8002 upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS which H834 RPRO he built H1129 VQQ3MS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and he burnt incense H6999 upon H854 PREP-3MS the altar that H834 RPRO was before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS . So he finished H7999 W-VPQ3MS the house H1004 .
26 And king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS made H6213 VQQ3MS a navy of ships H590 in Ezion H6100 - geber , which H834 RPRO is beside H854 PREP Eloth H359 , on H5921 PREP the shore H8193 CFS of the Red H5488 NMS sea H3220 , in the land H776 B-GFS of Edom H123 .
27 And Hiram H2438 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS in the navy H590 his servants H5650 , shipmen H591 CFP that had knowledge H3045 VQPMS of the sea H3220 D-NMS , with H5973 PREP the servants H5650 of Solomon H8010 .
28 And they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Ophir H211 , and fetched H3947 W-VQY3MP from thence H8033 M-ADV gold H2091 NMS , four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP and twenty H6242 W-MMP talents H3603 , and brought H935 it to H413 PREP king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 .
