1. So Solomon finished building the Temple of the LORD, as well as the royal palace. He completed everything he had planned to do.

1. And it came to pass H1961 , when Solomon H8010 had finished H3615 the building H1129 of H853 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , and the king H4428 's house H1004 , and all H3605 Solomon H8010 's desire H2837 which H834 he was pleased H2654 to do H6213 ,

2. Then the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had done before at Gibeon.
|
2. That the LORD H3068 appeared H7200 to H413 Solomon H8010 the second time H8145 , as H834 he had appeared H7200 unto H413 him at Gibeon H1391 .
|
|
3. The LORD said to him, "I have heard your prayer and your petition. I have set this Temple apart to be holy-- this place you have built where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.

3. And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto H413 him , I have heard H8085 H853 thy prayer H8605 and thy supplication H8467 , that H834 thou hast made H2063 before H6440 me : I have hallowed H6942 H853 this H2088 house H1004 , which H834 thou hast built H1129 , to put H7760 my name H8034 there H8033 forever H5704 H5769 ; and mine eyes H5869 and mine heart H3820 shall be H1961 there H8033 perpetually H3605 H3117 .

4. "As for you, if you will follow me with integrity and godliness, as David your father did, obeying all my commands, decrees, and regulations,

4. And if H518 thou H859 wilt walk H1980 before H6440 me, as H834 David H1732 thy father H1 walked H1980 , in integrity H8537 of heart H3824 , and in uprightness H3476 , to do H6213 according to all H3605 that H834 I have commanded H6680 thee, and wilt keep H8104 my statutes H2706 and my judgments H4941 :

5. then I will establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel forever. For I made this promise to your father, David: 'One of your descendants will always sit on the throne of Israel.'

6. "But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the commands and decrees I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods,
|
6. But if H518 ye shall at all turn H7725 H7725 from following H4480 H310 me, ye H859 or your children H1121 , and will not H3808 keep H8104 my commandments H4687 and my statutes H2708 which H834 I have set H5414 before H6440 you , but go H1980 and serve H5647 other H312 gods H430 , and worship H7812 them:

7. then I will uproot Israel from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name. I will make Israel an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.

7. Then will I cut off H3772 H853 Israel H3478 out of H4480 H5921 H6440 the land H127 which H834 I have given H5414 them ; and this house H1004 , which H834 I have hallowed H6942 for my name H8034 , will I cast H7971 out of H4480 H5921 my sight H6440 ; and Israel H3478 shall be H1961 a proverb H4912 and a byword H8148 among all H3605 people H5971 :

8. And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads in amazement. They will ask, 'Why did the LORD do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?'

8. And at this H2088 house H1004 , which is H1961 high H5945 , every one H3605 that passeth H5674 by H5921 it shall be astonished H8074 , and shall hiss H8319 ; and they shall say H559 , Why H4100 hath the LORD H3068 done H6213 thus H3602 unto this H2063 land H776 , and to this H2088 house H1004 ?

9. "And the answer will be, 'Because his people abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why the LORD has brought all these disasters on them.'"

9. And they shall answer H559 , Because H5921 H834 they forsook H5800 H853 the LORD H3068 their God H430 , who H834 brought forth H3318 H853 their fathers H1 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 , and have taken hold H2388 upon other H312 gods H430 , and have worshiped H7812 them , and served H5647 them: therefore H5921 H3651 hath the LORD H3068 brought H935 upon H5921 them H853 all H3605 this H2063 evil H7451 .

10. It took Solomon twenty years to build the LORD's Temple and his own royal palace. At the end of that time,

10. And it came to pass H1961 at the end H4480 H7097 of twenty H6242 years H8141 , when H834 Solomon H8010 had built H1129 H853 the two H8147 houses H1004 , H853 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , and the king H4428 's house H1004 ,

11. he gave twenty towns in the land of Galilee to King Hiram of Tyre. (Hiram had previously provided all the cedar and cypress timber and gold that Solomon had requested.)

11. (Now Hiram H2438 the king H4428 of Tyre H6865 had furnished H5375 H853 Solomon H8010 with cedar H730 trees H6086 and fir H1265 trees H6086 , and with gold H2091 , according to all H3605 his desire H2656 ,) that then H227 king H4428 Solomon H8010 gave H5414 Hiram H2438 twenty H6242 cities H5892 in the land H776 of Galilee H1551 .

12. But when Hiram came from Tyre to see the towns Solomon had given him, he was not at all pleased with them.

12. And Hiram H2438 came out H3318 from Tyre H4480 H6865 to see H7200 H853 the cities H5892 which H834 Solomon H8010 had given H5414 him ; and they pleased H3474 H5869 him not H3808 .

13. "What kind of towns are these, my brother?" he asked. So Hiram called that area Cabul (which means "worthless"), as it is still known today.

13. And he said H559 , What H4100 cities H5892 are these H428 which H834 thou hast given H5414 me , my brother H251 ? And he called H7121 them the land H776 of Cabul H3521 unto H5704 this H2088 day H3117 .

14. Nevertheless, Hiram paid Solomon 9,000 pounds of gold.

14. And Hiram H2438 sent H7971 to the king H4428 sixscore H3967 H6242 talents H3603 of gold H2091 .

15. This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's Temple, the royal palace, the supporting terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

15. And this H2088 is the reason H1697 of the levy H4522 which H834 king H4428 Solomon H8010 raised H5927 ; for to build H1129 H853 the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , and his own house H1004 , and Millo H4407 , and the wall H2346 of Jerusalem H3389 , and Hazor H2674 , and Megiddo H4023 , and Gezer H1507 .

16. (Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gezer, killing the Canaanite population and burning it down. He gave the city to his daughter as a wedding gift when she married Solomon.

16. For Pharaoh H6547 king H4428 of Egypt H4714 had gone up H5927 , and taken H3920 H853 Gezer H1507 , and burnt H8313 it with fire H784 , and slain H2026 the Canaanites H3669 that dwelt H3427 in the city H5892 , and given H5414 it for a present H7964 unto his daughter H1323 , Solomon H8010 's wife H802 .

17. So Solomon rebuilt the city of Gezer.) He also built up the towns of Lower Beth-horon,

17. And Solomon H8010 built H1129 H853 Gezer H1507 , and Beth H1032 -horon the nether H8481 ,

18. Baalath, and Tamar in the wilderness within his land.
|
18. And Baalath H1191 , and Tadmor H8412 in the wilderness H4057 , in the land H776 ,
|
|
19. He built towns as supply centers and constructed towns where his chariots and horses could be stationed. He built everything he desired in Jerusalem and Lebanon and throughout his entire realm.

19. And all H3605 the cities H5892 of store H4543 that H834 Solomon H8010 had H1961 , and cities H5892 for his chariots H7393 , and cities H5892 for his horsemen H6571 , and that which H834 Solomon H8010 desired H2836 to build H1129 in Jerusalem H3389 , and in Lebanon H3844 , and in all H3605 the land H776 of his dominion H4475 .

20. There were still some people living in the land who were not Israelites, including Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

20. And all H3605 the people H5971 that were left H3498 of H4480 the Amorites H567 , Hittites H2850 , Perizzites H6522 , Hivites H2340 , and Jebusites H2983 , which H834 were not H3808 of the children H4480 H1121 of Israel H3478 ,

21. These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them for his labor force, and they serve in the labor force to this day.

21. Their children H1121 that H834 were left H3498 after H310 them in the land H776 , whom H834 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 also were not H3808 able H3201 utterly to destroy H2763 , upon those did Solomon H8010 levy H5927 a tribute of bondservice H4522 H5647 unto H5704 this H2088 day H3117 .

22. But Solomon did not conscript any of the Israelites for forced labor. Instead, he assigned them to serve as fighting men, government officials, officers and captains in his army, commanders of his chariots, and charioteers.

22. But of the children H4480 H1121 of Israel H3478 did Solomon H8010 make H5414 no H3808 bondmen H5650 : but H3588 they H1992 were men H376 of war H4421 , and his servants H5650 , and his princes H8269 , and his captains H7991 , and rulers H8269 of his chariots H7393 , and his horsemen H6571 .

23. Solomon appointed 550 of them to supervise the people working on his various projects.

23. These H428 were the chief H8269 of the officers H5324 that H834 were over H5921 Solomon H8010 's work H4399 , five H2568 hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 , which bare rule H7287 over the people H5971 that wrought H6213 in the work H4399 .

24. Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh's daughter, from the City of David to the new palace he had built for her. Then he constructed the supporting terraces.

24. But H389 Pharaoh H6547 's daughter H1323 came up H5927 out of the city H4480 H5892 of David H1732 unto H413 her house H1004 which H834 Solomon had built H1129 for her: then H227 did he build H1129 H853 Millo H4407 .

25. Three times each year Solomon presented burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD. He also burned incense to the LORD. And so he finished the work of building the Temple.

25. And three H7969 times H6471 in a year H8141 did Solomon H8010 offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 and peace offerings H8002 upon H5921 the altar H4196 which H834 he built H1129 unto the LORD H3068 , and he burnt incense H6999 upon H854 the altar that H834 was before H6440 the LORD H3068 . So he finished H7999 H853 the house H1004 .

26. King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, a port near Elath in the land of Edom, along the shore of the Red Sea.

26. And king H4428 Solomon H8010 made H6213 a navy of ships H590 in Ezion H6100 -geber, which H834 is beside H854 Eloth H359 , on H5921 the shore H8193 of the Red H5488 sea H3220 , in the land H776 of Edom H123 .

27. Hiram sent experienced crews of sailors to sail the ships with Solomon's men.
|
27. And Hiram H2438 sent H7971 in the navy H590 H853 his servants H5650 , shipmen H376 H591 that had knowledge H3045 of the sea H3220 , with H5973 the servants H5650 of Solomon H8010 .

28. They sailed to Ophir and brought back to Solomon some sixteen tons of gold.

28. And they came H935 to Ophir H211 , and fetched H3947 from thence H4480 H8033 gold H2091 , four H702 hundred H3967 and twenty H6242 talents H3603 , and brought H935 it to H413 king H4428 Solomon H8010 .
