2 Kings 9:29 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Meanwhile, Elisha the prophet had summoned a member of the group of prophets. "Get ready to travel," he told him, "and take this flask of olive oil with you. Go to Ramoth-gilead,
2 and find Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. Call him into a private room away from his friends,
3 and pour the oil over his head. Say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: I anoint you to be the king over Israel.' Then open the door and run for your life!"
4 So the young prophet did as he was told and went to Ramoth-gilead.
5 When he arrived there, he found Jehu sitting around with the other army officers. "I have a message for you, Commander," he said."For which one of us?" Jehu asked."For you, Commander," he replied.
6 So Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet poured the oil over Jehu's head and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the LORD's people, Israel.
7 You are to destroy the family of Ahab, your master. In this way, I will avenge the murder of my prophets and all the LORD's servants who were killed by Jezebel.
8 The entire family of Ahab must be wiped out. I will destroy every one of his male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel.
9 I will destroy the family of Ahab as I destroyed the families of Jeroboam son of Nebat and of Baasha son of Ahijah.
10 Dogs will eat Ahab's wife Jezebel at the plot of land in Jezreel, and no one will bury her." Then the young prophet opened the door and ran.
11 Jehu went back to his fellow officers, and one of them asked him, "What did that madman want? Is everything all right?" "You know how a man like that babbles on," Jehu replied.
12 "You're hiding something," they said. "Tell us." So Jehu told them, "He said to me, 'This is what the LORD says: I have anointed you to be king over Israel.'"
13 Then they quickly spread out their cloaks on the bare steps and blew the ram's horn, shouting, "Jehu is king!"
14 So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, led a conspiracy against King Joram. (Now Joram had been with the army at Ramoth-gilead, defending Israel against the forces of King Hazael of Aram.
15 But King Joram was wounded in the fighting and returned to Jezreel to recover from his wounds.) So Jehu told the men with him, "If you want me to be king, don't let anyone leave town and go to Jezreel to report what we have done."
16 Then Jehu got into a chariot and rode to Jezreel to find King Joram, who was lying there wounded. King Ahaziah of Judah was there, too, for he had gone to visit him.
17 The watchman on the tower of Jezreel saw Jehu and his company approaching, so he shouted to Joram, "I see a company of troops coming!" "Send out a rider to ask if they are coming in peace," King Joram ordered.
18 So a horseman went out to meet Jehu and said, "The king wants to know if you are coming in peace." Jehu replied, "What do you know about peace? Fall in behind me!" The watchman called out to the king, "The messenger has met them, but he's not returning."
19 So the king sent out a second horseman. He rode up to them and said, "The king wants to know if you come in peace." Again Jehu answered, "What do you know about peace? Fall in behind me!"
20 The watchman exclaimed, "The messenger has met them, but he isn't returning either! It must be Jehu son of Nimshi, for he's driving like a madman."
21 "Quick! Get my chariot ready!" King Joram commanded.Then King Joram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah rode out in their chariots to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of land that had belonged to Naboth of Jezreel.
22 King Joram demanded, "Do you come in peace, Jehu?" Jehu replied, "How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother, Jezebel, are all around us?"
23 Then King Joram turned the horses around and fled, shouting to King Ahaziah, "Treason, Ahaziah!"
24 But Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart, and he sank down dead in his chariot.
25 Jehu said to Bidkar, his officer, "Throw him into the plot of land that belonged to Naboth of Jezreel. Do you remember when you and I were riding along behind his father, Ahab? The LORD pronounced this message against him:
26 'I solemnly swear that I will repay him here on this plot of land, says the LORD, for the murder of Naboth and his sons that I saw yesterday.' So throw him out on Naboth's property, just as the LORD said."
27 When King Ahaziah of Judah saw what was happening, he fled along the road to Beth-haggan. Jehu rode after him, shouting, "Shoot him, too!" So they shot Ahaziah in his chariot at the Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam. He was able to go on as far as Megiddo, but he died there.
28 His servants took him by chariot to Jerusalem, where they buried him with his ancestors in the City of David.
29 Ahaziah had become king over Judah in the eleventh year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab.
30 When Jezebel, the queen mother, heard that Jehu had come to Jezreel, she painted her eyelids and fixed her hair and sat at a window.
31 When Jehu entered the gate of the palace, she shouted at him, "Have you come in peace, you murderer? You're just like Zimri, who murdered his master!"
32 Jehu looked up and saw her at the window and shouted, "Who is on my side?" And two or three eunuchs looked out at him.
33 "Throw her down!" Jehu yelled. So they threw her out the window, and her blood spattered against the wall and on the horses. And Jehu trampled her body under his horses' hooves.
34 Then Jehu went into the palace and ate and drank. Afterward he said, "Someone go and bury this cursed woman, for she is the daughter of a king."
35 But when they went out to bury her, they found only her skull, her feet, and her hands.
36 When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, "This fulfills the message from the LORD, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: 'At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel's body.
37 Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.'"

2 And when thou comest H935 W-VQQ2MS thither H8033 ADV-3FS , look out H7200 there H8033 ADV Jehu H3058 the son H1121 CMS of Jehoshaphat H3092 the son H1121 CMS of Nimshi H5250 , and go in H935 W-VQQ2MS , and make him arise up H6965 from among H8432 his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , and carry H935 him to an inner H2315 chamber H2315 ;
3 Then take H3947 the box H6378 of oil H8081 , and pour H3332 it on H5921 PREP his head H7218 CMS-3MS , and say H559 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , I have anointed H4886 thee king H4428 L-CMS over H413 PREP Israel H3478 . Then open H6605 the door H1817 , and flee H5127 , and tarry H2442 not H3808 W-NPAR .
4 So the young man H5288 , even the young man H5288 the prophet H5030 , went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Ramoth H7433 - gilead .
5 And when he came H935 W-VQY3MS , behold H2009 IJEC , the captains H8269 CMP of the host H2428 were sitting H3427 ; and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I have an errand H1697 VQPMS to H413 PREP thee , O captain H8269 . And Jehu H3058 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Unto H413 PREP which H4310 IPRO of all H3605 us ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , To H413 PREP thee , O captain H8269 .
6 And he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H935 W-VQY3MS into the house H1004 ; and he poured H3332 the oil H8081 on H413 PREP his head H7218 CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , I have anointed H4886 thee king H4428 L-CMS over H413 PREP the people H5971 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , even over H413 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
7 And thou shalt smite H5221 the house H1004 CMS of Ahab H256 thy master H113 , that I may avenge H5358 the blood H1818 CMP of my servants H5650 the prophets H5030 , and the blood H1818 of all H3605 NMS the servants H5650 of the LORD H3068 EDS , at the hand H3027 M-GFS of Jezebel H348 .
8 For the whole H3605 NMS house H1004 CMS of Ahab H256 shall perish H6 : and I will cut off H3772 from Ahab H256 him that pisseth H8366 against the wall H7023 , and him that is shut up H6113 and left H5800 in Israel H3478 :
9 And I will make H5414 the house H1004 CMS of Ahab H256 like the house H1004 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 CMS of Nebat H5028 , and like the house H1004 of Baasha H1201 the son H1121 CMS of Ahijah H281 :
10 And the dogs H3611 shall eat H398 Jezebel H348 in the portion H2506 of Jezreel H3157 , and there shall be none H369 W-NPAR to bury H6912 her . And he opened H6605 W-VQY3MS the door H1817 , and fled H5127 .
11 Then Jehu H3058 came forth H3318 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP the servants H5650 of his lord H113 : and one said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Is all well H7965 ? wherefore H4069 IPRO came H935 this H2088 D-PMS mad H7696 fellow to H413 PREP thee ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS know H3045 the man H376 D-NMS , and his communication H7879 .
12 And they said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is false H8267 NMS ; tell H5046 us now H4994 IJEC . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H2063 and thus H2063 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS he to H413 PREP me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , I have anointed H4886 thee king H4428 L-CMS over H413 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
13 Then they hasted H4116 , and took H3947 W-VQY3MP every man H376 NMS his garment H899 NMS-3MS , and put H7760 W-VQY3MP it under H8478 him on H413 PREP the top H1634 of the stairs H4609 , and blew H8628 with trumpets H7782 , saying H559 W-VQY3MP , Jehu H3058 is king H4427 .
14 So Jehu H3058 the son H1121 of Jehoshaphat H3092 the son H1121 of Nimshi H5250 conspired H7194 against H413 PREP Joram H3141 . (Now Joram H3141 had H1961 VQQ3MS kept H8104 Ramoth H7433 - gilead , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 , because H6440 M-CMP of Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 .
15 But king H4428 NMS Joram H3088 was returned H7725 to be healed H7495 in Jezreel H3157 of H4480 PREP the wounds H4347 which H834 RPRO the Syrians H761 had given H5221 him , when he fought H3898 with H854 PREP Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS . ) And Jehu H3058 said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART it be H3426 PART your minds H5315 CFS-2MP , then let none H408 NPAR go forth H3318 VQY3MS nor escape H6412 out of H4480 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS to go H1980 L-VQFC to tell H5046 it in Jezreel H3157 .
16 So Jehu H3058 rode in a chariot H7392 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Jezreel H3157 ; for H3588 CONJ Joram H3141 lay H7901 there H8033 ADV-3FS . And Ahaziah H274 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 was come down H3381 VQQ3MS to see H7200 L-VQFC Joram H3141 .
17 And there stood H5975 a watchman H6822 on H5921 PREP the tower H4026 D-NMS in Jezreel H3157 , and he spied H7200 W-VIY3MS the company H8229 of Jehu H3058 as he came H935 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS see H7200 W-VIY3MS a company H8229 . And Joram H3088 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Take H3947 VQI2MS a horseman H7395 , and send H7971 to meet H7122 them , and let him say H559 W-VQY3MS , Is it peace H7965 ?
18 So there went H1980 W-VQY3MS one on horseback H7392 to meet H7122 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , Is it peace H7965 ? And Jehu H3058 said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO hast thou to do with peace H7965 ? turn H5437 thee behind H413 PREP me . And the watchman H6822 told H5046 W-VHY3MS , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , The messenger H4397 came H935 to H5704 PREP them H1992 PPRO-3MP , but he cometh not again H7725 .
19 Then he sent out H7971 W-VQY3MS a second H8145 on horseback H7392 , which came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP-3MS them , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , Is it peace H7965 NMS ? And Jehu H3058 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO hast thou to do with peace H7965 ? turn H5437 thee behind H413 PREP me .
20 And the watchman H6822 told H5046 W-VHY3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , He came H935 VQPMS even H5704 PREP unto H413 PREP-3MP them , and cometh not again H7725 VQQ3MS : and the driving H4491 is like the driving H4491 of Jehu H3058 the son H1121 CMS of Nimshi H5250 ; for H3588 CONJ he driveth H5090 furiously H7697 .
21 And Joram H3088 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Make ready H631 . And his chariot H7393 was made ready H631 W-VQY3MS . And Joram H3088 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 and Ahaziah H274 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS , each H376 NMS in his chariot H7393 , and they went out H3318 against H7122 Jehu H3058 , and met H4672 him in the portion H2513 of Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 .
22 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Joram H3088 saw H7200 K-VQFC Jehu H3058 , that he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is it peace H7965 , Jehu H3058 ? And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IGAT peace H7965 , so long as H5704 PREP the whoredoms H2183 of thy mother H517 Jezebel H348 and her witchcrafts H3785 are so many H7227 ?
23 And Joram H3088 turned H2015 his hands H3027 CFD-3MS , and fled H5127 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Ahaziah H274 , There is treachery H4820 NFS , O Ahaziah H274 .
24 And Jehu H3058 drew a bow H7198 with his full H4390 VPQ3MS strength H3027 CFS-3MS , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS Jehoram H3088 between H996 PREP his arms H2220 , and the arrow H2678 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS at his heart H3820 , and he sunk down H3766 in his chariot H7393 .
25 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Jehu to H413 PREP Bidkar H920 his captain H7991 , Take up H5375 VQI2MS , and cast H7993 him in the portion H2513 of the field H7704 CMS of Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 : for H3588 CONJ remember H2142 VQI2MS how that , when I H589 PPRO-1MS and thou H859 rode H7392 together H6776 after H310 PREP Ahab H256 his father H1 CMS-3MS , the LORD H3068 W-EDS laid H5375 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS burden H4853 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him ;
26 Surely H518 PART I have seen H7200 VQQ1MS yesterday H570 CMS the blood H1818 CMP of Naboth H5022 , and the blood H1818 CMP of his sons H1121 CMP-3MS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS ; and I will requite H7999 thee in this H2063 D-DFS plat H2513 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS . Now H6258 W-ADV therefore take H5375 VQI2MS and cast H7993 him into the plat H2513 of ground , according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
27 But when Ahaziah H274 the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 saw H7200 VQQ3MS this , he fled H5127 by the way H1870 NMS of the garden H1588 D-NMS house H1004 CMS . And Jehu H3058 followed H7291 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Smite H5221 him also H1571 CONJ in H413 PREP the chariot H4818 . And they did so at the going up H4608 to Gur H1483 , which H834 RPRO is by H854 Ibleam H2991 . And he fled H5127 to Megiddo H4023 , and died H4191 W-VQY3MS there H8033 ADV .
28 And his servants H5650 carried him in a chariot H7392 to Jerusalem H3389 , and buried H6912 him in his sepulcher H6900 with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 in the city H5892 of David H1732 .
29 And in the eleventh H259 OFS year H8141 of Joram H3141 the son H1121 of Ahab H256 began Ahaziah H274 to reign H4427 over H5921 PREP Judah H3063 .
30 And when Jehu H3058 was come H935 W-VQY3MS to Jezreel H3157 , Jezebel H348 heard H8085 VQQ3FS of it ; and she painted H7760 her face H5869 , and tired H3190 her head H7218 , and looked out H8259 at H1157 PREP a window H2474 .
31 And as Jehu H3058 entered in H935 VQPMS at the gate H8179 , she said H559 W-VQY3FS , Had Zimri H2174 peace H7965 , who slew H2026 VQPMS his master H113 ?
32 And he lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his face H6440 CMS-3MS to H413 PREP the window H2474 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO is on my side H854 PREP-1MS ? who H4310 IPRO ? And there looked out H8259 to H413 PREP-3MS him two H8147 ONUM or three H7969 NFS eunuchs H5631 .
33 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Throw her down H8058 . So they threw her down H8058 : and some of her blood H1818 was sprinkled H5137 on H413 PREP the wall H7023 , and on H413 PREP the horses H5483 : and he trod her under foot H7429 .
34 And when he was come in H935 W-VQY3MS , he did eat H398 and drink H8354 W-VQY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go , see H6485 now H4994 IJEC this H2063 D-DFS cursed H779 woman , and bury H6912 her : for H3588 CONJ she H1931 is a king H4428 NMS \'s daughter H1323 .
35 And they went H1980 W-VQY3MP to bury H6912 her : but they found H4672 VQQ3MP no more H3808 W-NPAR of her than H518 PART the skull H1538 , and the feet H7272 , and the palms H3709 of her hands H3027 .
36 Wherefore they came again H7725 W-VUY3MP , and told H5046 him . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , This H1931 PPRO-3MS is the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO he spoke H1696 VPQ3MS by H3027 B-CFS his servant H5650 Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , In the portion H2506 of Jezreel H3157 shall dogs H3611 eat H398 the flesh H1320 CMS of Jezebel H348 :
37 And the carcass H5038 of Jezebel H348 shall be H1961 as dung H1828 upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the field H7704 D-NMS in the portion H2506 of Jezreel H3157 ; so that H834 RPRO they shall not H3808 ADV say H559 VQY3MP , This H2063 DPRO is Jezebel H348 .
