1. This is what the LORD says: "I will stir up a destroyer against Babylon and the people of Babylonia.

2. Foreigners will come and winnow her, blowing her away as chaff. They will come from every side to rise against her in her day of trouble.
|
2. And will send H7971 unto Babylon H894 fanners H2114 , that shall fan H2219 her , and shall empty H1238 H853 her land H776 : for H3588 in the day H3117 of trouble H7451 they shall be H1961 against H5921 her round about H4480 H5439 .
|
|
3. Don't let the archers put on their armor or draw their bows. Don't spare even her best soldiers! Let her army be completely destroyed.
|
3. Against H413 him that bendeth H1869 let the archer H1869 bend H1869 his bow H7198 , and against H413 him that lifteth himself up H5927 in his brigandine H5630 : and spare H2550 ye not H408 her young men H970 ; destroy ye utterly H2763 all H3605 her host H6635 .

4. They will fall dead in the land of the Babylonians, slashed to death in her streets.
|
4. Thus the slain H2491 shall fall H5307 in the land H776 of the Chaldeans H3778 , and they that are thrust through H1856 in her streets H2351 .
|
|
5. For the LORD of Heaven's Armies has not abandoned Israel and Judah. He is still their God, even though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel."

6. Flee from Babylon! Save yourselves! Don't get trapped in her punishment! It is the LORD's time for vengeance; he will repay her in full.

6. Flee H5127 out of the midst H4480 H8432 of Babylon H894 , and deliver H4422 every man H376 his soul H5315 : be not H408 cut off H1826 in her iniquity H5771 ; for H3588 this H1931 is the time H6256 of the LORD H3068 's vengeance H5360 ; he will render H7999 unto her a recompense H1576 .

7. Babylon has been a gold cup in the LORD's hands, a cup that made the whole earth drunk. The nations drank Babylon's wine, and it drove them all mad.
|
7. Babylon H894 hath been a golden H2091 cup H3563 in the LORD H3068 's hand H3027 , that made all H3605 the earth H776 drunken H7937 : the nations H1471 have drunken H8354 of her wine H4480 H3196 ; therefore H5921 H3651 the nations H1471 are mad H1984 .

8. But suddenly Babylon, too, has fallen. Weep for her. Give her medicine. Perhaps she can yet be healed.
|
8. Babylon H894 is suddenly H6597 fallen H5307 and destroyed H7665 : howl H3213 for H5921 her; take H3947 balm H6875 for her pain H4341 , if so be H194 she may be healed H7495 .

9. We would have helped her if we could, but nothing can save her now. Let her go; abandon her. Return now to your own land. For her punishment reaches to the heavens; it is so great it cannot be measured.

10. The LORD has vindicated us. Come, let us announce in Jerusalem everything the LORD our God has done.

11. Sharpen the arrows! Lift up the shields! For the LORD has inspired the kings of the Medes to march against Babylon and destroy her. This is his vengeance against those who desecrated his Temple.

12. Raise the battle flag against Babylon! Reinforce the guard and station the watchmen. Prepare an ambush, for the LORD will fulfill all his plans against Babylon.

13. You are a city by a great river, a great center of commerce, but your end has come. The thread of your life is cut.

13. O thou that dwellest H7931 upon H5921 many H7227 waters H4325 , abundant H7227 in treasures H214 , thine end H7093 is come H935 , and the measure H520 of thy covetousness H1215 .

14. The LORD of Heaven's Armies has taken this vow and has sworn to it by his own name: "Your cities will be filled with enemies, like fields swarming with locusts, and they will shout in triumph over you."

15. The LORD made the earth by his power, and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens.

16. When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens are filled with water. He causes the clouds to rise over the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses.

When he uttereth H5414 his voice H6963 , there is a multitude H1995 of waters H4325 in the heavens H8064 ; and he causeth the vapors H5387 to ascend H5927 from the ends H4480 H7097 of the earth H776 : he maketh H6213 lightnings H1300 with rain H4306 , and bringeth forth H3318 the wind H7307 out of his treasures H4480 H214 .

17. The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge! The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make, for their carefully shaped works are a fraud. These idols have no breath or power.
|
17. Every H3605 man H120 is brutish H1197 by his knowledge H4480 H1847 ; every H3605 founder H6884 is confounded H3001 by the graven image H4480 H6459 : for H3588 his molten image H5262 is falsehood H8267 , and there is no H3808 breath H7307 in them.

18. Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed.
|
18. They H1992 are vanity H1892 , the work H4639 of errors H8595 : in the time H6256 of their visitation H6486 they shall perish H6 .
|
|
19. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people, his own special possession. The LORD of Heaven's Armies is his name!
|
19. The portion H2506 of Jacob H3290 is not H3808 like them H428 ; for H3588 he H1931 is the former H3335 of all things H3605 : and Israel is the rod H7626 of his inheritance H5159 : the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 is his name H8034 .

20. "You are my battle-ax and sword," says the LORD. "With you I will shatter nations and destroy many kingdoms.
|
20. Thou H859 art my battle axe H4661 and weapons H3627 of war H4421 : for with thee will I break in pieces H5310 the nations H1471 , and with thee will I destroy H7843 kingdoms H4467 ;

21. With you I will shatter armies-- destroying the horse and rider, the chariot and charioteer.

22. With you I will shatter men and women, old people and children, young men and maidens.
|

23. With you I will shatter shepherds and flocks, farmers and oxen, captains and officers.

23. I will also break in pieces H5310 with thee the shepherd H7462 and his flock H5739 ; and with thee will I break in pieces H5310 the husbandman H406 and his yoke of oxen H6776 ; and with thee will I break in pieces H5310 captains H6346 and rulers H5461 .

24. "I will repay Babylon and the people of Babylonia for all the wrong they have done to my people in Jerusalem," says the LORD.

24. And I will render H7999 unto Babylon H894 and to all H3605 the inhabitants H3427 of Chaldea H3778 H853 all H3605 their evil H7451 that H834 they have done H6213 in Zion H6726 in your sight H5869 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 .

25. "Look, O mighty mountain, destroyer of the earth! I am your enemy," says the LORD. "I will raise my fist against you, to knock you down from the heights. When I am finished, you will be nothing but a heap of burnt rubble.

26. You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out," says the LORD.

27. Raise a signal flag to the nations. Sound the battle cry! Mobilize them all against Babylon. Prepare them to fight against her! Bring out the armies of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a commander, and bring a multitude of horses like swarming locusts!

27. Set ye up H5375 a standard H5251 in the land H776 , blow H8628 the trumpet H7782 among the nations H1471 , prepare H6942 the nations H1471 against H5921 her , call together H8085 against H5921 her the kingdoms H4467 of Ararat H780 , Minni H4508 , and Ashchenaz H813 ; appoint H6485 a captain H2951 against H5921 her ; cause the horses H5483 to come up H5927 as the rough H5569 caterpillars H3218 .

28. Bring against her the armies of the nations-- led by the kings of the Medes and all their captains and officers.
|
28. Prepare H6942 against H5921 her the nations H1471 with H853 the kings H4428 of the Medes H4074 , H853 the captains H6346 thereof , and all H3605 the rulers H5461 thereof , and all H3605 the land H776 of his dominion H4475 .
|
|
29. The earth trembles and writhes in pain, for everything the LORD has planned against Babylon stands unchanged. Babylon will be left desolate without a single inhabitant.
|
29. And the land H776 shall tremble H7493 and sorrow H2342 : for H3588 every purpose H4284 of the LORD H3068 shall be performed H6965 against H5921 Babylon H894 , to make H7760 H853 the land H776 of Babylon H894 a desolation H8047 without H4480 H369 an inhabitant H3427 .

30. Her mightiest warriors no longer fight. They stay in their barracks, their courage gone. They have become like women. The invaders have burned the houses and broken down the city gates.

30. The mighty men H1368 of Babylon H894 have forborne H2308 to fight H3898 , they have remained H3427 in their holds H4679 : their might H1369 hath failed H5405 ; they became H1961 as women H802 : they have burned H3341 her dwelling places H4908 ; her bars H1280 are broken H7665 .

31. The news is passed from one runner to the next as the messengers hurry to tell the king that his city has been captured.
|
31. One post H7323 shall run H7323 to meet H7125 another H7323 , and one messenger H5046 to meet H7125 another H5046 , to show H5046 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 that H3588 his city H5892 is taken H3920 at one end H4480 H7097 ,

32. All the escape routes are blocked. The marshes have been set aflame, and the army is in a panic.

32. And that the passages H4569 are stopped H8610 , and the reeds H98 they have burned H8313 with fire H784 , and the men H376 of war H4421 are frightened H926 .

|
33. This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies, the God of Israel, says: "Babylon is like wheat on a threshing floor, about to be trampled. In just a little while her harvest will begin."

34. "King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has eaten and crushed us and drained us of strength. He has swallowed us like a great monster and filled his belly with our riches. He has thrown us out of our own country.

35. Make Babylon suffer as she made us suffer," say the people of Zion. "Make the people of Babylonia pay for spilling our blood," says Jerusalem.

35. The violence H2555 done to me and to my flesh H7607 be upon H5921 Babylon H894 , shall the inhabitant H3427 of Zion H6726 say H559 ; and my blood H1818 upon H413 the inhabitants H3427 of Chaldea H3778 , shall Jerusalem H3389 say H559 .

36. This is what the LORD says to Jerusalem: "I will be your lawyer to plead your case, and I will avenge you. I will dry up her river, as well as her springs,

37. and Babylon will become a heap of ruins, haunted by jackals. She will be an object of horror and contempt, a place where no one lives.
|
37. And Babylon H894 shall become H1961 heaps H1530 , a dwelling place H4583 for dragons H8577 , an astonishment H8047 , and a hissing H8322 , without H4480 H369 an inhabitant H3427 .
|
|
38. Her people will roar together like strong lions. They will growl like lion cubs.
|
38. They shall roar H7580 together H3162 like lions H3715 : they shall yell H5286 as lions H738 ' whelps H1484 .
|
|
39. And while they lie inflamed with all their wine, I will prepare a different kind of feast for them. I will make them drink until they fall asleep, and they will never wake up again," says the LORD.

39. In their heat H2527 I will make H7896 H853 their feasts H4960 , and I will make them drunken H7937 , that H4616 they may rejoice H5937 , and sleep H3462 a perpetual H5769 sleep H8142 , and not H3808 wake H6974 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 .

40. "I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats to be sacrificed.

|
41. "How Babylon is fallen-- great Babylon, praised throughout the earth! Now she has become an object of horror among the nations.
|
41. How H349 is Sheshach H8347 taken H3920 ! and how is the praise H8416 of the whole H3605 earth H776 surprised H8610 ! how H349 is Babylon H894 become H1961 an astonishment H8047 among the nations H1471 !

|
42. The sea has risen over Babylon; she is covered by its crashing waves.
|
42. The sea H3220 is come up H5927 upon H5921 Babylon H894 : she is covered H3680 with the multitude H1995 of the waves H1530 thereof.
|
|
43. Her cities now lie in ruins; she is a dry wasteland where no one lives or even passes by.
|
43. Her cities H5892 are H1961 a desolation H8047 , a dry H6723 land H776 , and a wilderness H6160 , a land H776 wherein H2004 no H3605 H3808 man H376 dwelleth H3427 , neither H3808 doth any son H1121 of man H120 pass H5674 thereby H2004 .

44. And I will punish Bel, the god of Babylon, and make him vomit up all he has eaten. The nations will no longer come and worship him. The wall of Babylon has fallen!
|
44. 45. "Come out, my people, flee from Babylon. Save yourselves! Run from the LORD's fierce anger.
|

46. But do not panic; don't be afraid when you hear the first rumor of approaching forces. For rumors will keep coming year by year. Violence will erupt in the land as the leaders fight against each other.
|

47. For the time is surely coming when I will punish this great city and all her idols. Her whole land will be disgraced, and her dead will lie in the streets.
|
47. Therefore H3651 , behold H2009 , the days H3117 come H935 , that I will do judgment H6485 upon H5921 the graven images H6456 of Babylon H894 : and her whole H3605 land H776 shall be confounded H954 , and all H3605 her slain H2491 shall fall H5307 in the midst H8432 of her.

48. Then the heavens and earth will rejoice, for out of the north will come destroying armies against Babylon," says the LORD.

49. "Just as Babylon killed the people of Israel and others throughout the world, so must her people be killed.
|
49. As H1571 Babylon H894 hath caused the slain H2491 of Israel H3478 to fall H5307 , so H1571 at Babylon H894 shall fall H5307 the slain H2491 of all H3605 the earth H776 .
|
|
50. Get out, all you who have escaped the sword! Do not stand and watch-- flee while you can! Remember the LORD, though you are in a far-off land, and think about your home in Jerusalem."

51. "We are ashamed," the people say. "We are insulted and disgraced because the LORD's Temple has been defiled by foreigners."
|
51. We are confounded H954 , because H3588 we have heard H8085 reproach H2781 : shame H3639 hath covered H3680 our faces H6440 : for H3588 strangers H2114 are come H935 into H5921 the sanctuaries H4720 of the LORD H3068 's house H1004 .

52. "Yes," says the LORD, "but the time is coming when I will destroy Babylon's idols. The groans of her wounded people will be heard throughout the land.
|
52. Wherefore H3651 , behold H2009 , the days H3117 come H935 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 , that I will do judgment H6485 upon H5921 her graven images H6456 : and through all H3605 her land H776 the wounded H2491 shall groan H602 .

|
53. Though Babylon reaches as high as the heavens and makes her fortifications incredibly strong, I will still send enemies to plunder her. I, the LORD, have spoken!
|
53. Though H3588 Babylon H894 should mount up H5927 to heaven H8064 , and though H3588 she should fortify H1219 the height H4791 of her strength H5797 , yet from H4480 H854 me shall spoilers H7703 come H935 unto her, saith H5002 the LORD H3068 .

54. "Listen! Hear the cry of Babylon, the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.
|
54. A sound H6963 of a cry H2201 cometh from Babylon H4480 H894 , and great H1419 destruction H7667 from the land H4480 H776 of the Chaldeans H3778 :

|
55. For the LORD is destroying Babylon. He will silence her loud voice. Waves of enemies pound against her; the noise of battle rings through the city.
|
55. Because H3588 the LORD H3068 hath spoiled H7703 H853 Babylon H894 , and destroyed H6 out of H4480 her the great H1419 voice H6963 ; when her waves H1530 do roar H1993 like great H7227 waters H4325 , a noise H7588 of their voice H6963 is uttered H5414 :

56. Destroying armies come against Babylon. Her mighty men are captured, and their weapons break in their hands. For the LORD is a God who gives just punishment; he always repays in full.

56. Because H3588 the spoiler H7703 is come H935 upon H5921 her, even upon H5921 Babylon H894 , and her mighty men H1368 are taken H3920 , every one of their bows H7198 is broken H2865 : for H3588 the LORD H3068 God H410 of recompenses H1578 shall surely requite H7999 H7999 .

57. I will make her officials and wise men drunk, along with her captains, officers, and warriors. They will fall asleep and never wake up again!" says the King, whose name is the LORD of Heaven's Armies.

58. This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies says: "The thick walls of Babylon will be leveled to the ground, and her massive gates will be burned. The builders from many lands have worked in vain, for their work will be destroyed by fire!"

Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 ; The broad H7342 walls H2346 of Babylon H894 shall be utterly broken H6209 H6209 , and her high H1364 gates H8179 shall be burned H3341 with fire H784 ; and the people H5971 shall labor H3021 in vain H7385 , and the folk H3816 in the fire H784 , and they shall be weary H3286 .

59. The prophet Jeremiah gave this message to Seraiah son of Neriah and grandson of Mahseiah, a staff officer, when Seraiah went to Babylon with King Zedekiah of Judah. This was during the fourth year of Zedekiah's reign.

59. 60. Jeremiah had recorded on a scroll all the terrible disasters that would soon come upon Babylon-- all the words written here.

61. He said to Seraiah, "When you get to Babylon, read aloud everything on this scroll.

61. And Jeremiah H3414 said H559 to H413 Seraiah H8304 , When thou comest H935 to Babylon H894 , and shalt see H7200 , and shalt read H7121 H853 all H3605 these H428 words H1697 ;

62. Then say, 'LORD, you have said that you will destroy Babylon so that neither people nor animals will remain here. She will lie empty and abandoned forever.'
