2 সেই স্থানে যিহূদীদের এক সমাজ-গৃহ ছিল; আর পৌল আপন রীতি অনুসারে তাহাদের কাছে গেলেন, এবং তিন বিশ্রামবারে তাহাদের সহিত শাস্ত্রের কথা লইয়া প্রসঙ্গ করিলেন,

3 অর্থ বুঝাইয়া দিলেন, এবং দেখাইলেন যে, খ্রীষ্টের মৃত্যুভোগ ও মৃতগণের মধ্য হইতে পুনরুত্থান করা আবশ্যক ছিল, এবং এই যে যীশুকে আমি তোমাদের কাছে প্রচার করিতেছি, তিনিই সেই খ্রীষ্ট।

4 তাহাতে তাহাদের মধ্যে কয়েক জন প্রত্যয় করিল, এবং পৌলের এ সীলের সহিত যোগ দিল; আর ভক্ত গ্রীকদিগের মধ্যে বিস্তর লোক ও অনেকগুলি প্রধান মহিলা তাঁহাদের সহিত যোগ দিলেন।

5 কিন্তু যিহূদীরা ঈর্ষাপরবশ হইয়া, বাজারের কয়েক জন দুষ্ট লোককে সঙ্গে লইয়া, জনতা করিয়া নগরে গোলযোগ বাধাইয়া দিল, এবং যাসোনের বাটী আক্রমণ করিয়া লোকদের কাছে আনিবার জন্য তাঁহাদের অন্বেষণ করিল।

6 কিন্তু তাঁহাদিগকে না পাওয়াতে তাহারা যাসোন এবং কয়েক ভ্রাতাকে নগরাধ্যক্ষদের সম্মুখে টানিয়া লইয়া গেল, ও চেঁচাইয়া বলিতে লাগিল, এই যে লোকেরা জগৎ-সংসারকে লণ্ডভণ্ড করিয়া ফেলিয়াছে, ইহারা এ স্থানেও উপস্থিত হইল;

7 যাসোন ইহাদের আতিথ্য করিয়াছে; আর ইহারা সকলে কৈসরের বিধিকলাপের বিরুদ্ধাচরণ করে ও বলে, যীশু নামে আর এক জন রাজা আছেন।

8 এই সকল কথা শুনাইয়া তাহারা জনতাকে ও নগরাধ্যক্ষদিগকে উদ্বিগ্ন করিয়া তুলিল।

9 তখন তাঁহারা যাসোনের ও আর সকলের জামিন লইয়া তাঁহাদিগকে ছাড়িয়া দিলেন।

10 পরে ভ্রাতৃগণ অবিলম্বে পৌলকে ও সীলকে রাত্রিযোগে বিরয়াতে পাঠাইয়া দিলেন। তখায় উপস্থিত হইয়া তাঁহারা যিহূদীদের সমাজগৃহে গমন করিলেন।

11 থিষলনীকীর যিহূদীদের অপেক্ষা ইহারা ভদ্র ছিল; কেননা ইহারা সম্পূর্ণ আগ্রহপূর্ব্বক বাক্য গ্রহণ করিল, আর এ সকল বাস্তবিকই এইরূপ কি না, তাহা জানিবার জন্য প্রতিদিন শাস্ত্র পরীক্ষা করিতে লাগিল।

12 অতএব তাহাদের মধ্যে অনেকে, এবং গ্রীকদিগের মধ্যেও অনেক সম্ভ্রান্ত মহিলা ও পুরুষ, বিশ্বাস করিলেন।

13 কিন্তু থিষলনীকীর যিহূদীরা যখন জানিতে পাইল যে বিরয়াতেও পৌলকর্ত্তৃত ঈশ্বরের বাক্য প্রচারিত হইয়াছে, তখন তাহারা সেখানেও আসিয়া লোকসমূহকে অস্থির ও উদ্বিগ্ন করিয়া তুলিতে লাগিল।

14 তখন ভ্রাতৃগণ অবিলম্বে পৌলকে সমুদ্র পর্য্যন্ত যাইবার জন্য প্রেরণ করিলেন; আর সীল ও তীমথিয় সেখানে রহিলেন।

15 আর যাহারা পৌলকে সঙ্গে করিয়া লইয়া গিয়াছিল, তাহারা তাঁহাকে আথীনী পর্য্যন্ত লইয়া গেল; পরে, তোমরা সীলকে ও তীমথিয়কে অতি সত্বর আমার কাছে আসিতে বলিবে, এই আজ্ঞা পাইয়া প্রস্থান করিল।

16 পৌল যখন তাঁহাদের অপেক্ষায় আথীনীতে ছিলেন, তখন সেই নগর প্রতিমাতে পরিপূর্ণ দেখিয়া তাঁহার অন্তরে তাঁহার আত্মা উত্তপ্ত হইয়া উঠিল।

17 অতএব তিনি সমাজ-গৃহে যিহূদী ও ভক্ত লোকদের কাছে, এবং বাজারে প্রতিদিন যাহাদের সঙ্গে দেখা হইত, তাহাদের কাছে কথা প্রসঙ্গ করিতেন।

18 আবার ইপিকুরেয় ও স্তোয়িকীয় কয়েক জন দার্শনিক তাঁহার সহিত তর্ক-বিতর্ক করিতে লাগিল। আর কেহ কেহ কহিল, এ বাচালটা কি বলিতে চায়? আর কেহ কেহ বলিল, উহাকে বিজাতীয় দেবতাদের প্রচারক বলিয়া বোধ হয়; কারণ তিনি যীশু ও পুনরুত্থান বিষয়ক সুসমাচার প্রচার করিতেন।

19 পরে তাহারা তাঁহার হাত ধরিয়া আরেয়পাগে লইয়া গিয়া কহিল, এই যে নূতন শিক্ষা আপনি প্রচার করিতেছেন, ইহা কি প্রকার, আমরা কি জানিতে পারি?

20 কারণ আপনি কতকগুলি অদ্ভুত কথা আমাদের কাণে তুলিতেছেন; অতএব আমরা জানিতে বাসনা করি; এ সকল কথার অর্থ কি।

21 (আথীনীয় সকল লোক ও তথাকার প্রবাসী বিদেশীরা কেবল নূতন কোন কথা বলা বা শুনা ছাড়া আর কিছুতে কালক্ষেপ করিত না।)

22 তখন পৌল আরেয়পাগের মধ্যস্থলে দাঁড়াইয়া কহিলেন, হে আথীনীয় লোকেরা, দেখিতেছি, তোমরা সর্ব্ববিষয়ে বড়ই দেবতাভক্ত।

23 কেননা বেড়াইবার সময়ে তোমাদের উপাস্য বস্তু সকল দেখিতে দেখিতে একটী বেদি দেখিলাম, যাহার উপরে লিখিত আছে, ‘অপরিচিত দেবের উদ্দেশে।’ অতএব তোমরা যে অপরিচিতের ভজনা করিতেছ, তাঁহাকে আমি তোমাদের নিকটে প্রচার করি।

24 ঈশ্বর, যিনি জগৎ ও তন্মধ্যস্থ সমস্ত বস্তু নির্ম্মাণ করিয়াছেন, তিনিই স্বর্গের ও পৃথিবীর প্রভু, সুতরাং হস্তনির্ম্মিত মন্দিরে বাস করেন না;

25 কোন কিছুর অভাব প্রযুক্ত মনুষ্যদের হস্ত দ্বারা সেবিতও হন না, তিনিই সকলকে জীবন ও শ্বাস ও সমস্তই দিতেছেন।

26 আর তিনি এক ব্যক্তি হইতে মনুষ্যদের সকল জাতিকে উৎপন্ন করিয়াছেন, যেন তাহারা সমস্ত ভূতলে বাস করে; তিনি তাহাদের নির্দ্দিষ্ট কাল ও নিবাসের সীমা স্থির করিয়াছেন;

27 যেন তাহারা ঈশ্বরের অন্বেষণ করে, যদি কোন মতে হাঁতড়িয়া হাঁতড়িয়া তাঁহার উদ্দেশ পায়; অথচ তিনি আমাদের কাহারও হইতে দূরে নহেন।

28 কেননা তাঁহাতেই আমাদের জীবন, গতি ও সত্তা; যেমন তোমাদের কয়েক জন কবিও বলিয়াছেন, ‘কারণ আমরাও তাঁহার বংশ’।

29 অতএব আমরা যখন ঈশ্বরের বংশ, তখন ঈশ্বরের স্বরূপকে মনুষ্যের শিল্প ও কল্পনা অনুসারে ক্ষোদিত স্বর্ণের কি রৌপ্যের কি প্রস্তরের সদৃশ জ্ঞান করা আমাদের কর্ত্তব্য নহে।

30 ঈশ্বর সেই অজ্ঞানতার কাল উপেক্ষা করিয়াছিলেন, কিন্তু এখন সর্ব্বস্থানের সকল মনুষ্যকে মনপরিবর্ত্তন করিতে আজ্ঞা দিতেছেন;

31 কেননা তিনি একটী দিন স্থির করিয়াছেন, যে দিনে আপনার নিরূপিত ব্যক্তি দ্বারা ন্যায়ে জগৎ-সংসারের বিচার করিবেন; এই বিষয়ে সকলের বিশ্বাসযোগ্য প্রমাণ দিয়াছেন, ফলতঃ মৃতগণের মধ্য হইতে তাঁহাকে উঠাইয়াছেন।

32 তখন মৃতগণের পুনরুত্থানের কথা শুনিয়া কেহ কেহ উপহাস করিতে লাগিল; কিন্তু আর কেহ কেহ বলিল, আপনার কাছে এ বিষয় আর একবার শুনিব।

33 এইরূপে পৌল তাহাদের মধ্য হইতে প্রস্থান করিলেন।

34 কিন্তু কোন কোন ব্যক্তি তাঁহার সঙ্গ ধরিল ও বিশ্বাস করিল; তাহাদের মধ্যে আরেয়পাগীয় দিয়নুষিয়, এবং দামারী নাম্নী একটী স্ত্রীলোক, ও তাঁহাদের সহিত আর কয়েক জন ছিলেন।
