1 উপদেশকের কথা; তিনি দায়ূদের পুত্র, যিরূশালেমস্থ রাজা।
2 উপদেশক কহিতেছেন, অসারের অসার, অসারের অসার, সকলই অসার।
3 মনুষ্য সূর্য্যের নীচে যে পরিশ্রমে পরিশ্রান্ত হয়, তাহার সেই সমস্ত পরিশ্রমে তাহার কি ফল দেখিতে পায়?
4 এক পুরুষ চলিয়া যায়, আর এক পুরুষ আইসে; কিন্তু পৃথিবী নিত্যস্থায়ী।
5 সূর্য্যও উঠে, আবার সূর্য্য অস্ত যায়; এবং সত্বর স্বস্থানে যায়, সেখানে গিয়া উঠে।
6 বায়ু দক্ষিণ দিকে যায় ও ঘুরিয়া ঘুরিয়া উত্তর দিকে যায়; নিরন্তর ঘুরিয়া ঘুরিয়া আপন পথে যায়, এবং বায়ু আপন চক্রপথে ফিরিয়া আসে।
7 জলস্রোত সকল সমুদ্রে প্রবেশ করে, তথাচ সমুদ্র পূর্ণ হয় না; জলস্রোত সকল যে স্থানে যায়, সেই স্থানে পুনরায় চলিয়া যায়।
8 সমস্ত বিষয় ক্লান্তিজনক; তাহার বর্ণনা করা মনুষ্যের অসাধ্য; দর্শনে চক্ষু তৃপ্ত হয় না, এবং শ্রবণে কর্ণ তৃপ্ত হয় না।
9 যাহা হইয়াছে, তাহাই হইবে; যাহা করা গিয়াছে, তাহাই করা যাইবে; সূর্য্যের নীচে নূতন কিছুই নাই।
10 এমন কি কিছু আছে, যাহার সম্বন্ধে মনুষ্য বলে, দেখ, ইহা নূতন? তাহা পূর্ব্বে, আমাদের পূর্ব্ববর্ত্তী যুগপর্য্যায়ে ছিল;
11 পূর্ব্বকালীয় লোকদের বিষয় কাহারও স্মরণে নাই; এবং ভাবী কালে যাহারা জন্মিবে, তাহাদের বিষয়ও পরবর্ত্তী ভাবী কালের লোকদের স্মরণে থাকিবে না।
12 আমি উপদেশক, যিরূশালেমে ইস্রায়েলের উপরে রাজা ছিলাম।
13 আর আমি প্রজ্ঞা দ্বারা আকাশের নীচে কৃত সমস্ত বিষয়ের অনুশীলন ও অনুসন্ধান করিতে মনোযোগ করিতাম; ঈশ্বর মনুষ্য-সন্তানগণকে কষ্টযুক্ত করিবার জন্য এই অতি ভারী কষ্ট দিয়াছেন।
14 সূর্য্যের নীচে কৃত সমস্ত কার্য্য আমি দেখিয়াছি; দেখ, সে সকলই অসার ও বায়ুভক্ষণ মাত্র।
15 যাহা বক্র, তাহা সোজা করা যায় না; এবং যাহা নাই, তাহা গণনা করা যায় না।
16 আমি আপন হৃদয়ের সহিত কথোপকথন করিলাম, কহিলাম, দেখ, আমার পূর্ব্বে যিরূশালেমে যে সকল অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন, সেই সকল অপেক্ষা আমি অধিক প্রজ্ঞাবিশিষ্ট হইয়াছি, এবং আমার হৃদয় নানা প্রকার প্রজ্ঞায় ও বিদ্যায় পারদর্শী হইয়াছে।
17 আমি প্রজ্ঞা জানিতে, এবং ক্ষিপ্রতা ও অজ্ঞানতা জানিতে মনোযোগ করিলাম, আমি জানিলাম যে, তাহাও বায়ুভক্ষণ মাত্র।
18 কেননা প্রজ্ঞার বাহুল্যে মনস্তাপের বাহুল্য হয়; এবং যে বিদ্যার বৃদ্ধি করে, সে ব্যাথার বৃদ্ধি করে।
