1 বস্তুতঃ আমি এই সমস্ত বিষয় অনুসন্ধান করিবার জন্য এই সমস্ত বিষয়ে মনোনিবেশ করিলাম; ধার্ম্মিক ও জ্ঞানবান লোকেরা এবং তাহাদের কার্য্য সকল ঈশ্বরের হস্তগত; প্রেম কি ঘৃণা, তাহা মনুষ্য জানে না; সমস্তই তাহাদের সম্মুখে।
2 সকলের প্রতি নির্ব্বিশেষে সকলই ঘটে; ধার্ম্মিক কি দুষ্ট, এবং ভাল ও শুচি কি অশুচি, এবং যজ্ঞকারী কি অযজ্ঞকারী, সকলের প্রতি একরূপ ঘটনা হয়; ভাল যেমন, পাপীও তেমনি, এবং শপথকারী যেমন, শপথে ভয়কারীও তেমনি।
3 সূর্য্যের নীচে যত কার্য্য করা যায়, তাহার মধ্যে ইহা দুঃখের বিষয় যে, সকলের প্রতি একরূপ ঘটনা হয়; অধিকন্তু মনুষ্য-সন্তানদের অন্তঃকরণ দুষ্টতায় পরিপূর্ণ, এবং যাবজ্জীবন ক্ষিপ্ততা তাহাদের হৃদয়মধ্যে থাকে, পরে তাহারা মৃতদের নিকটে যায়। কারণ কে অব্যাহতি পায়?
4 সমস্ত জীবিত লোকের মধ্যে প্রত্যাশা আছে, কেননা মৃত সিংহ অপেক্ষা বরং জীবিত কুকুর ভাল।
5 কারণ জীবিত লোকেরা জানে যে, তাহারা মরিবে; কিন্তু মৃতেরা কিছুই জানে না, এবং তাহাদের আর কোন ফলও হয় না, কারণ লোকে তাহাদের বিষয় ভুলিয়া গিয়াছে।
6 তাহাদের প্রেম, তাহাদের দ্বেষ ও তাহাদের ঈর্ষা সকলই বিনষ্ট হইয়া গিয়াছে; সূর্য্যের নীচে যে কোন কার্য্য করা যায়, তাহাতে কোন কালেও তাহাদের আর কোন অধিকার হইবে না।
7 তুমি যাও, আনন্দপূর্ব্বক তোমার খাদ্য ভোজন কর, হৃষ্টচিত্তে তোমার দ্রাক্ষারস পান কর, কেননা ঈশ্বর পূর্ব্বাবধি তোমার কার্য্য গ্রাহ্য করিয়া আসিতেছেন।
8 তোমার বস্ত্র সর্ব্বদা শুক্লবর্ণ থাকুক, তোমার মস্তকে তৈলের অভাব না হউক।
9 সূর্য্যের নীচে ঈশ্বর তোমাকে অসার জীবনের যত দিন দিয়াছেন, তোমার সেই সমস্ত অসার দিন থাকিতে তুমি আপন প্রিয়া ভার্য্যার সহিত সুখে জীবন যাপন কর, কেননা জীবনের মধ্যে, এবং তুমি সূর্য্যের নীচে যে পরিশ্রমে পরিশ্রান্ত হইতেছ, তাহার মধ্যে ইহাই তোমার অধিকার।
10 তোমার হস্ত যে কোন কার্য্য করিতে পায়, তোমার শক্তির সহিত তাহা কর; কেননা তুমি যে স্থানে যাইতেছ, সেই পাতালে কোন কার্য্য কি সঙ্কল্প, কি বিদ্যা কি প্রজ্ঞা, কিছুই নাই।
11 আমি ফিরিলাম, ও সূর্য্যের নীচে দেখিলাম যে, দ্রুতগামীদের দ্রুতগমন, কি বীরদের যুদ্ধ, কি জ্ঞানবানদের অন্ন, কি বুদ্ধিমানদের ধন, কি বিজ্ঞদেরই অনুগ্রহলাভ হয়, এমন নয়, কিন্তু সকলের প্রতি কাল ও দৈব ঘটে।
12 বাস্তবিক মনুষ্যও আপনার কাল জানে না; যেমন মৎস্যগণ অশুভ জালে ধৃত হয়, কিম্বা যেমন পক্ষিগণ ফাঁদে ধৃত হয়, তেমনি মনুষ্য-সন্তানেরা অশুভকালে ধরা পড়ে, তাহা ত হঠাৎ তাহাদের উপরে পড়িয়া থাকে।
13 আবার আমি প্রজ্ঞাকে সূর্য্যের নীচে এইরূপে দেখিয়াছি, আর তাহা আমার দৃষ্টিতে মহৎ বোধ হইল।
14 একটী ক্ষুদ্র নগর ছিল, তাহাতে লোক অল্প ছিল; পরে মহান্‌ কোন রাজা আসিয়া তাহা বেষ্টন করিয়া তাহার বিরুদ্ধে বড় বড় দুর্গ নির্ম্মাণ করিলেন।
15 আর ঐ নগরের মধ্যে এক জন জ্ঞানবান দরিদ্র লোককে পাওয়া গেল; সে আপন প্রজ্ঞা দ্বারা নগরটী রক্ষা করিল, কিন্তু সেই দরিদ্র লোকটীকে কেহই স্মরণ করিল না।
16 তখন আমি কহিলাম, পরাক্রম হইতে প্রজ্ঞা উত্তম, তথাপি দরিদ্রের প্রজ্ঞাকে তুচ্ছ করা হয়, ও তাহার কথা কেহ শুনে না।
17 হীনবুদ্ধিদের মধ্যে কর্ত্তৃত্বকারীর চীৎকার অপেক্ষা জ্ঞানবানদের কথা শান্তিস্থানে অধিক শ্রুত হয়।
18 যুদ্ধাস্ত্র অপেক্ষাও প্রজ্ঞা উত্তম, কিন্তু এক জন পাপী বহু মঙ্গল নষ্ট করে।

16 Then said H559 I, H589 Wisdom H2451 is better H2896 than strength H4480 H1369 : nevertheless the poor man's H4542 wisdom H2451 is despised, H959 and his words H1697 are not H369 heard. H8085
17 The words H1697 of wise H2450 men are heard H8085 in quiet H5183 more than the cry H4480 H2201 of him that ruleth H4910 among fools. H3684
