1 রক্ষক-সেনাপতি নবূষরদন যিরমিয়কে রামা হইতে বিদায় দিলে পর তাঁহার নিকটে সদাপ্রভুর যে বাক্য উপস্থিত হইল, তাহার বৃত্তান্ত। নবূষরদন যখন তাঁহাকে গ্রহণ করিলেন, তখন তিনি শৃঙ্খলে বদ্ধ, এবং যিরূশালেমের ও যিহূদার যে সমস্ত লোক নির্ব্বাসার্থে বাবিলে নীত হইতেছিল, তাহাদের মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
2 রক্ষক-সেনাপতি যিরমিয়কে গ্রহণ করিয়া কহিলেন, তোমার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু এই স্থানের বিষয়ে এই অমঙ্গলের কথা বলিয়াছিলেন;
3 আর সদাপ্রভু তাহা ঘটাইয়াছেন, যেমন বলিয়াছিলেন, তেমনি করিয়াছেন। তোমরা সদাপ্রভুর বিরুদ্ধে পাপ করিয়াছ, তাঁহার রবে অবধান কর নাই, এই জন্য তোমাদের প্রতি ইহা ঘটিল।
4 এখন দেখ, অদ্য আমি তোমার হস্তের শৃঙ্খল হইতে তোমাকে মুক্ত করিলাম; তুমি যদি আমার সহিত বাবিলে যাইতে ইচ্ছা কর, তবে আইস, আমি তোমার প্রতি অনুগ্রহদৃষ্টি রাখিব; আর যদি আমার সহিত বাবিলে যাইতে তোমার ইচ্ছা না হয়, তবে ক্ষান্ত হও; দেখ, সমস্ত দেশ তোমার সম্মুখে আছে; যে স্থানে যাওয়া তোমার উত্তম ও বিহিত বোধ হয়, সেই স্থানে যাও।
5 তিনি তখনও ফিরিতেছেন না দেখিয়া কহিলেন, ‘ভাল, তুমি শাফনের পৌত্র অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয়ের কাছে ফিরিয়া যাও, বাবিল-রাজ তাঁহাকেই যিহূদার নগরসমূহের উপরে শাসনকর্ত্তা নিযুক্ত করিয়াছেন, তুমি লোকদের মধ্যে তাঁহার সহিত বাস কর; কিম্বা যে কোন স্থানে যাওয়া তোমার বিহিত বোধ হয়, সেই স্থানে যাও।’ পরে রক্ষক-সেনাপতি তাঁহাকে পাথেয় ও উপঢৌকন দিয়া বিদায় করিলেন।
6 তাহাতে যিরমিয় মিস্পাতে অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয়ের নিকটে গিয়া দেশে অবশিষ্ট লোকদের মধ্যে তাঁহার সহিত বাস করিতে লাগিলেন।
7 মাঠে অবস্থিত সৈন্যগণের সমস্ত সেনাপতি ও তাহাদের লোকেরা যখন শুনিতে পাইল যে, বাবিল-রাজ অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয়কে দেশে শাসনকর্ত্তা নিযুক্ত করিয়াছেন, এবং যাহারা বন্দিরূপে বাবিলে নীত হয় নাই, সেই সকল পুরুষ, স্ত্রী, বালকবালিকা ও জনপদস্থ দরিদ্র লোকদিগকে তাঁহার কাছে সমর্পণ করিয়াছেন,
8 তখন তাহারা মিস্পাতে গদলিয়ের কাছে আসিল; অর্থাৎ নথনিয়ের পুত্র ইশ্মায়েল এবং যোহানন ও যোনাথন নামে কারেহের দুই পুত্র, তন্‌হূমতের পুত্র সরায়, নটোফাতীয় এফয়ের পুত্রগণ ও মাখাথীয়ের পুত্র যাসনিয়, ইহারা আপন আপন লোকদের সহিত উপস্থিত হইল।
9 আর শাফনের পৌত্র অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয় তাহাদের কাছে ও তাহাদের লোকদের কাছে শপথ করিয়া বলিলেন, তোমরা কল্‌দীয়দের দাস হইতে ভয় করিও না, দেশে বাস করিয়া বাবিল-রাজের দাস হও, তাহাতে তোমাদের মঙ্গল হইবে।
10 আর আমি, দেখ, যে কল্‌দীয়েরা আমাদের এখানে আসিবে, আমি তাহাদের সম্মুখে দণ্ডায়মান হইবার জন্য এই মিস্পাতে বাস করিব; কিন্তু তোমরা দ্রাক্ষারস, গ্রীষ্মের ফল ও তৈল সঞ্চয় করিয়া আপন আপন পাত্রে রাখ, এবং যে সকল নগর তোমাদের হস্তগত হইয়াছে, তথায় বাস কর।
11 আর মোয়াবে, অম্মোন-সন্তানদের মধ্যে ইদোমে ও অন্যান্য দেশে যে সকল যিহূদী ছিল, তাহারা যখন শুনিল যে, বাবিল-রাজ যিহূদার এক অংশ অবশিষ্ট রাখিয়াছেন, এবং শাফনের পৌত্র অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয়কে তাহাদের উপরে নিযুক্ত করিয়াছেন,
12 তখন সেই যিহূদীরা সকলে যে সমস্ত স্থানে বিতাড়িত হইয়াছিল, সেই সমস্ত স্থান হইতে ফিরিয়া আসিল, যিহূদা দেশে মিস্পাতে গদলিয়ের নিকটে উপস্থিত হইল, এবং অপর্য্যাপ্ত দ্রাক্ষারস ও গ্রীষ্মের ফল সঞ্চয় করিতে লাগিল।
13 পরে কারেহের পুত্র যোহানন ও মাঠে অবস্থিত সৈন্যগণের সমস্ত সেনাপতি মিস্পাতে গদলিয়ের নিকটে আসিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিল,
14 আপনি কি জানেন, অম্মোন-সন্তানদের রাজা বালীস আপনার প্রাণনাশ করিতে নথনিয়ের পুত্র ইশ্মায়েলকে প্রেরণ করিয়াছেন? কিন্তু অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয় তাহাদের কথায় বিশ্বাস করিলেন না।
15 পরে কারেহের পুত্র যোহানন মিস্পাতে গদলিয়কে গোপনে কহিল, যদি আপনার অনুমতি হয়, তবে আমি গিয়া নথনিয়ের পুত্র ইশ্মায়েলকে বধ করি, কেহ তাহা জানিতে পারিবে না; সে কেন আপনার প্রাণ নষ্ট করিবে? করিলে আপনার নিকটে সংগৃহিত সমস্ত যিহূদী ছিন্নভিন্ন, এবং যিহূদার অবশিষ্টাংশ বিনষ্ট হইবে।
16 কিন্তু অহীকামের পুত্র গদলিয় কারেহের পুত্র যোহাননকে কহিলেন, এ কার্য্য করিও না; কেননা ইশ্মায়েলের বিষয়ে তুমি যাহা বলিতেছ, তাহা মিথ্যা।

6 Then went H935 Jeremiah H3414 unto H413 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 to Mizpah; H4708 and dwelt H3427 with H854 him among H8432 the people H5971 that were left H7604 in the land. H776
7 Now when all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 which H834 were in the fields, H7704 even they H1992 and their men, H376 heard H8085 that H3588 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 had made H853 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 governor H6485 in the land, H776 and H3588 had committed H6485 unto H854 him men, H376 and women, H802 and children, H2945 and of the poor H4480 H1803 of the land, H776 of them that H4480 H834 were not H3808 carried away captive H1540 to Babylon; H894
8 Then they came H935 to H413 Gedaliah H1436 to Mizpah, H4708 even Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah, H5418 and Johanan H3110 and Jonathan H3129 the sons H1121 of Kareah, H7143 and Seraiah H8304 the son H1121 of Tanhumeth, H8576 and the sons H1121 of Ephai H5778 the Netophathite, H5200 and Jezaniah H3153 the son H1121 of a Maachathite, H4602 they H1992 and their men. 9 And Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 swore H7650 unto them and to their men, H376 saying, H559 Fear H3372 not H408 to serve H4480 H5647 the Chaldeans: H3778 dwell H3427 in the land, H776 and serve H5647 H853 the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and it shall be well H3190 with you.
10 As for me, H589 behold, H2009 I will dwell H3427 at Mizpah H4709 to serve H5975 H6440 the Chaldeans, H3778 which H834 will come H935 unto H413 us : but ye, H859 gather H622 ye wine, H3196 and summer fruits, H7019 and oil, H8081 and put H7760 them in your vessels, H3627 and dwell H3427 in your cities H5892 that H834 ye have taken. 13 Moreover Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah, H7143 and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 that H834 were in the fields, H7704 came H935 to H413 Gedaliah H1436 to Mizpah, H4708
14 And said H559 unto H413 him , Dost thou certainly know H3045 H3045 that H3588 Baalis H1185 the king H4428 of the Ammonites H1121 H5983 hath sent H7971 H853 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 to slay H5221 H5315 thee? But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 believed H539 them not. H3808
15 Then Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 spoke H559 to H413 Gedaliah H1436 in Mizpah H4709 secretly, H5643 saying, H559 Let me go, H1980 I pray thee, H4994 and I will slay H5221 H853 Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah, H5418 and no H3808 man H376 shall know H3045 it : wherefore H4100 should he slay H5221 H5315 thee , that all H3605 the Jews H3063 which are gathered H6908 unto H413 thee should be scattered, H6327 and the remnant H7611 in Judah H3063 perish H6 ?
16 But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 said H559 unto H413 Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah, H7143 Thou shalt not H408 do H6213 H853 this H2088 thing: H1697 for H3588 thou H859 speakest H1696 falsely H8267 of H413 Ishmael. H3458
