1 তৎপরে ইয়োব মুখ খুলিয়া আপনার জন্মদিনকে শাপ দিতে লাগিলেন।
2 ইয়োব কহিলেন,
3 বিলুপ্ত হউক সেই দিন, যে দিন আমার জন্ম হইয়াছিল, সেই রাত্রি, যে রাত্রি বলিয়াছিল, ‘পুত্রসন্তান হইল’।
4 সেই দিন অন্ধকার হউক; ঊর্দ্ধ হইতে ঈশ্বর সে দিনের তত্ত্ব না করুন, দীপ্তি তাহার উপরে বিরাজমান না হউক;
5 অন্ধকার ও মৃত্যুচ্ছায়া তাহাকে আদায় করুক, মেঘ তাহাকে আচ্ছন্ন করুক, যাহা কিছু দিন অন্ধকার করে, তাহা তাহাকে ত্রাসযুক্ত করুক।
6 সেই রাত্রি তিমির গ্রস্ত হউক, তাহা বৎসরের দিনশ্রেণীতে ভুক্ত না হউক, তাহা মাসের সংখ্যার মধ্যে গণ্য না হউক।
7 দেখ, সেই রাত্রি বন্ধ্যা হউক, আনন্দগান তাহাতে প্রবেশ না করুক।
8 তাহারা তারে শাপ দিউক, যাহারা দিনকে শাপ দেয়, যাহারা লিবিয়াথনকে জাগাইতে নিপুন।
9 তাহার সান্ধ্য নক্ষত্র সকল অন্ধকার হউক, সে যেন দীপ্তির অপেক্ষায় থাকিলেও দীপ্তি না পায়, সে যেন ঊষার চক্ষের পাতা দেখিতে না পায়।
10 কেননা সে মম জননীর জঠরের কবাট বদ্ধ করে নাই আমার চক্ষু হইতে কষ্ট গুপ্ত রাখে নাই।
11 আমি কেন গর্ভে মরি নাই? উদর হইতে পড়িবামাত্র কেন প্রাণত্যাগ করি নাই?
12 জানুযুগল কেন আমাকে গ্রহণ করিয়াছিল? স্তনযুগই বা কেন আমাকে দুগ্ধ দিয়াছিল?
13 তাহা হইলে এখন শয়ন করিয়া বিশ্রাম করিতাম, নিদ্রিত হইতাম, শান্তি পাইতাম,;
14 রাজগণের ও দেশের মন্ত্রিগণের সহিত থাকিতাম, যাঁহারা আপনাদের জন্য ধ্বংসস্থান নির্ম্মাণ করিয়াছিলেন;
15 বা অধিপতিদের সহিত থাকিতাম, যাঁহাদের স্বর্ণ ছিল, যাঁহারা রৌপ্য স্ব স্ব গৃহ পরিপূর্ণ করিতেন;
16 কিম্বা গুপ্ত গর্ভস্রাবের মত প্রাণহীন হইতাম। আলোক-দর্শন অপ্রাপ্ত শিশুর তুল্য হইতাম।
17 সেই স্থানে দুষ্টগণ আর উৎপাত করে না, সেই স্থানে শ্রান্তেরা বিশ্রাম পায়;
18 তথায় বন্দিগণ নিরাপদে একত্র থাকে, তাহারা উপদ্রবীর রব আর শুনে না;
19 সেই স্থানে ছোট বড় একই, এবং দাস আপন স্বামী হইতে মুক্ত।
20 দুঃখার্ত্তকে কেন দীপ্তি দেওয়া হয়? তিক্তপ্রাণকে কেন জীবন দেওয়া হয়?
21 তাহারা মৃত্যুর আকাঙ্ক্ষা করে, কিন্তু তাহা আইসে না, তাহারা গুপ্ত ধন অপেক্ষা তাহার সন্ধান করে।
22 কবর পাইতে পারিলে তাহারা আহ্লাদ করে, মহানন্দে উল্লাসিত হয়।
23 ঈদৃশ লোকের পথ গুপ্ত, তাহার চতুর্দ্দিকে ঈশ্বর বেড়া দিয়াছেন।
24 আমার হাহাকার আমার ভক্ষ্যবৎ হইতেছে, আমার আর্ত্তনাদ জলের ন্যায় ঢালা যাইতেছে।
25 আমি যাহা ভয় করি, তাহাই আমার ঘটে, যাহার আশঙ্কা করি, তাহাই উপস্থিত হয়।
26 আমার শান্তি নাই, বিরাম নাই, বিশ্রাম নাই; কেবল উদ্বেগ উপস্থিত হয়।
