1 ফরীশীদের মধ্যে এক ব্যক্তি ছিলেন, তাঁহার নাম নীকদীম; তিনি যিহূদীদের এক জন অধ্যক্ষ।

2 তিনি রাত্রিকালে যীশুর নিকটে আসিলেন, এবং তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, রব্বি, আমরা জানি, আপনি ঈশ্বরের নিকট হইতে আগত গুরু; কেননা আপনি এই যে সকল চিহ্ন-কার্য্য সাধন করিতেছেন, ঈশ্বর সহবর্ত্তী না থাকিলে এ সকল কেহ করিতে পারে না।

3 যীশু উত্তর করিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, সত্য, সত্য, আমি তোমাকে বলিতেছি, নূতন জন্ম না হইলে কেহ ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য দেখিতে পায় না।

4 নীকদীম তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, মনুষ্য বৃদ্ধ হইলে কেমন করিয়া তাহার জন্ম হইতে পারে? সে কি দ্বিতীয় বার মাতার গর্ভে প্রবেশ করিয়া জন্মিতে পারে?

5 যীশু উত্তর করিলেন, সত্য, সত্য, আমি তোমাকে বলিতেছি, যদি কেহ জল এবং আত্মা হইতে না জন্মে, তবে সে ঈশ্বরের রাজ্যে প্রবেশ করিতে পারে না।

6 মাংস হইতে যাহা জাত, তাহা মাংসই; আর আত্মা হইতে যাহা জাত, তাহা আত্মাই।

7 আমি যে তোমাকে বলিলাম, তোমাদের নূতন জন্ম হওয়া আবশ্যক, ইহাতে আশ্চর্য্য জ্ঞান করিও না।

8 বায়ু যে দিকে ইচ্ছা করে, সেই দিকে বহে, এবং তুমি তাহার শব্দ শুনিতে পাও; কিন্তু কোথা হইতে আইসে, আর কোথায় চলিয়া যায়, তাহা জান না; আত্মা হইতে জাত প্রত্যেক জন সেইরূপ।

9 নীকদীম উত্তর করিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, এ সকল কি প্রকারে হইতে পারে?

10 যীশু উত্তর করিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, তুমি ইস্রায়েলের গুরু, আর এ সকল বুঝিতেছ না?

11 সত্য, সত্য, আমি তোমাকে বলিতেছি, আমরা যাহা জানি তাহা বলি, এবং যাহা দেখিয়াছি তাহার সাক্ষ্য দিই; আর তোমরা আমাদের সাক্ষ্য গ্রহণ কর না।

12 আমি পার্থিব বিষয়ের কথা কহিলে তোমরা যদি বিশ্বাস না কর, তবে স্বর্গীয় বিষয়ের কথা কহিলে কেমন করিয়া বিশ্বাস করিবে?

13 আর স্বর্গে কেহ উঠে নাই; কেবল যিনি স্বর্গ হইতে নামিয়াছেন, সেই মনুষ্যপুত্র, যিনি স্বর্গে থাকেন ।

14 আর মোশি যেমন প্রান্তরে সেই সর্পকে উচ্চে উঠাইয়াছিলেন, সেইরূপে মনুষ্যপুত্রকেও উচ্চীকৃত হইতে হইবে,

15 যেন, যে কেহ তাঁহাতে বিশ্বাস করে, সে অনন্ত জীবন পায়।

16 কারণ ঈশ্বর জগৎকে এমন প্রেম করিলেন যে, আপনার একজাত পুত্রকে দান করিলেন, যেন, যে কেহ তাঁহাতে বিশ্বাস করে, সে বিনষ্ট না হয়, কিন্তু অনন্ত জীবন পায়।

17 কেননা ঈশ্বর জগতের বিচার করিতে পুত্রকে জগতে প্রেরণ করেন নাই, কিন্তু জগৎ যেন তাঁহার দ্বারা পরিত্রাণ পায়।

18 যে তাঁহাতে বিশ্বাস করে, তাহার বিচার করা যায় না; যে বিশ্বাস না করে, তাহার বিচার হইয়া গিয়াছে, যেহেতুক সে ঈশ্বরের একজাত পুত্রের নামে বিশ্বাস করে নাই।

19 আর সেই বিচার এই যে, জগতে জ্যোতি আসিয়াছে, এবং মনুষ্যেরা জ্যোতি হইতে অন্ধকার অধিক ভাল বাসিল, কেননা তাহাদের কর্ম্ম সকল মন্দ ছিল।

20 কারণ যে কেহ কদাচরণ করে, সে জ্যোতি ঘৃণা করে, এবং জ্যোতির নিকটে আইসে না, পাছে তাহার কর্ম্ম সকলের দোষ ব্যক্ত হয়।

21 কিন্তু যে সত্য সাধন করে, সে জ্যোতির নিকটে আইসে, যেন তাহার কর্ম্ম সকল ঈশ্বরে সাধিত বলিয়া সপ্রকাশ হয়।

22 তৎপরে যীশু ও তাঁহার শিষ্যগণ যিহূদিয়া দেশে আসিলেন, আর তিনি সেখানে তাঁহাদের সহিত থাকিলেন, এবং বাপ্তাইজ করিতে লাগিলেন।

23 আর যোহনও শালীমের নিকটবর্ত্তী ঐনোনে বাপ্তাইজ করিতেছিলেন, কারণ সেই স্থানে অনেক জল ছিল;

24 আর লোকেরা আসিয়া বাপ্তাইজিত হইত, কারণ তখনও যোহন কারাগারে নিক্ষিপ্ত হন নাই।

25 তখন এক জন যিহূদীর সহিত শুচীকরণ বিষয়ে যোহনের শিষ্যদের তর্ক হইল।

26 পরে তাহারা যোহনের নিকটে আসিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিল, রব্বি, যিনি যর্দ্দনের ওপারে আপনার সহিত ছিলেন, যাঁহার বিষয়ে আপনি সাক্ষ্য দিয়াছেন, দেখুন, তিনি বাপ্তাইজ করিতেছেন, এবং সকলে তাঁহার নিকটে যাইতেছে।

27 যোহন উত্তর করিয়া কহিলেন, স্বর্গ হইতে মনুষ্যকে যাহা দত্ত হইয়াছে, তাহা ছাড়া সে আর কিছুই গ্রহণ করিতে পারে না।

28 তোমরা আপনারাই আমার সাক্ষী যে, আমি বলিয়াছি, আমি সেই খ্রীষ্ট নহি, কিন্তু তাঁহার অগ্রে প্রেরিত হইয়াছি।

29 যে ব্যক্তি কন্যাকে পাইয়াছে, সেই বর; কিন্তু বরের মিত্র যে দাঁড়াইয়া তাঁহার কথা শুনে, সে বরের রবে অতিশয় আনন্দিত হয়; অতএব আমার এই আনন্দ পূর্ণ হইল।

30 উহাকে বৃদ্ধি পাইতে হইবে, কিন্তু আমাকে হ্রাস পাইতে হইবে।

31 যিনি উপর হইতে আইসেন, তিনি সর্ব্বপ্রধান; যে পৃথিবী হইতে, সে পার্থিব, এবং পৃথিবীরই কথা কহে; যিনি স্বর্গ হইতে আইসেন, তিনি সর্ব্বপ্রধান।

32 তিনি যাহা দেখিয়াছেন ও শুনিয়াছেন, তাহারই সাক্ষ্য দিতেছেন, আর তাঁহার সাক্ষ্য কেহ গ্রহণ করে না।

33 যে তাঁহার সাক্ষ্য গ্রহণ করিয়াছে, সে ইহাতে মুদ্রাঙ্ক দিয়াছে যে, ঈশ্বর সত্য।

34 কারণ ঈশ্বর যাঁহাকে প্রেরণ করিয়াছেন তিনি ঈশ্বরের বাক্য বলেন; কারণ ঈশ্বর আত্মাকে পরিমাণ-পূর্ব্বক দেন না।

35 পিতা পুত্রকে প্রেম করেন, এবং সমস্তই তাঁহার হস্তে দিয়াছেন।

36 যে কেহ পুত্রে বিশ্বাস করে, সে অনন্ত জীবন পাইয়াছে; কিন্তু যে কেহ পুত্রকে অমান্য করে, সে জীবন দেখিতে পাইবে না, কিন্তু ঈশ্বরের ক্রোধ তাহার উপরে অবস্থিতি করে।
