1 পরে সদাপ্রভু মোয়াবের তলভূমিতে যিরীহোর নিকটস্থ যর্দ্দনের নিকটে মোশিকে কহিলেন,

2 তুমি ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণকে আজ্ঞা কর, যেন তাহারা আপন আপন অধিকৃত অংশ হইতে বাস করিবার জন্য কতকগুলি নগর লেবীয়দিগকে দেয়; তোমরা সেই সকল নগরের সহিত চারিদিকের পরিসরভূমিও লেবীয়দিগকে দিবে।

3 সে সকল নগর তাহাদের নিবাসের জন্য হইবে, ও নগরগুলির পরিসরভূমি তাহাদের পশুগণ, সম্পত্তি ও জীব সকলের নিমিত্ত হইবে।

4 আর তোমরা নগরগুলির যে সকল পরিসরভূমি লেবীয়দিগকে দিবে, তাহার পরিমাণ নগর-প্রাচীরের বাহিরে চতুর্দ্দিকে সহস্র হস্ত হইবে।

5 আর তোমরা নগরের বাহিরে তাহার পূর্ব্ব সীমা দুই সহস্র হস্ত, দক্ষিণ সীমা দুই সহস্র হস্ত, পশ্চিম সীমা দুই সহস্র হস্ত ও উত্তর সীমা দুই সহস্র হস্ত পরিমাণ করিবে; মধ্যস্থলে নগরটী থাকিবে। তাহাদের জন্য উহা নগরের পরিসরভূমি হইবে।

6 নরহন্তাদের পলায়নার্থে যে ছয়টী আশ্রয় নগর তোমরা দিবে, সেই সকল এবং তাহা ছাড়া আরও বেয়াল্লিশটী নগর তোমরা লেবীয়দিগকে দিবে।

7 সর্ব্বশুদ্ধ আটচল্লিশ নগর ও সেইগুলির পরিসরভূমি লেবীয়দিগকে দিবে।

8 আর ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণের অধিকার হইতে সেই সকল নগর দিবার সময়ে তোমরা অধিক হইতে অধিক ও অল্প হইতে অল্প লইবে; প্রত্যেক বংশ আপনার প্রাপ্ত অধিকারানুসারে কতকগুলি নগর লেবীয়দিগকে দিবে।

9 পরে সদাপ্রভু মোশিকে কহিলেন,

10 তুমি ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণকে কহ, তাহাদিগকে বল, যখন তোমরা যর্দ্দন পার হইয়া কনান দেশে উপস্থিত হইবে,

11 তখন তোমাদের আশ্রয়-নগর হইবার জন্য কতকগুলি নগর নিরূপণ করিবে; যে জন প্রমাদবশতঃ কাহারও প্রাণ নষ্ট করে, এমন নরহন্তা যেন তথায় পলায়ন করিতে পারে।

12 ফলতঃ সেই সকল নগর প্রতিশোধদাতার হস্ত হইতে তোমাদের আশ্রয়স্থান হইবে; যেন নরহন্তা বিচারার্থে মণ্ডলীর সম্মুখে উপস্থিত হইবার পূর্ব্বে মারা না পড়ে।

13 তোমরা যে সকল নগর দিবে, তাহার মধ্যে ছয়টী আশ্রয় নগর হইবে।

14 তোমরা যর্দ্দনের পূর্ব্বপারে তিন নগর ও কনান দেশে তিন নগর দিবে; সেগুলি আশ্রয় নগর হইবে।

15 ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানদের জন্য, এবং তাহাদের মধ্যে প্রবাসী ও বিদেশীর জন্য এই ছয়টী নগর আশ্রয়স্থান হইবে; যেন কেহ প্রমাদবশতঃ মনুষ্যকে বধ করিলে সেই স্থানে পলাইতে পারে।

16 পরন্তু যদি কেহ লৌহাস্ত্র দ্বারা কাহাকেও এমন আঘাত করে যে, তাহাতে সে মরে, তবে সেই ব্যক্তি নরহন্তা; সেই নরহন্তার প্রাণদণ্ড অবশ্য হইবে।

17 আর যাহা দ্বারা মরিতে পারে, এমন প্রস্তর হস্তে লইয়া যদি সে কাহাকেও আঘাত করে, ও তাহাতে সে মরে, তবে সে নরহন্তা; সেই নরহন্তার প্রাণদণ্ড অবশ্য হইবে।

18 কিম্বা যাহা দ্বারা মরিতে পারে, এমন কোন কাষ্ঠময় বস্তু হস্তে লইয়া যদি সে কাহাকেও আঘাত করে, আর তাহাতে সে মরে, তবে সে নরহন্তা; সেই নরহন্তার প্রাণদণ্ড অবশ্য হইবে।

19 রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতা আপনি নরহন্তাকে বধ করিবে; তাহার দেখা পাইলেই তাহাকে বধ করিবে।

20 আর যদি দ্বেষ করিয়া কেহ কাহাকেও আঘাত করে, কিম্বা লক্ষ্য করিয়া তাহার উপরে অস্ত্র নিক্ষেপ করে ও তাহাতে সে মরে;

21 কিম্বা শত্রুতা করিয়া যদি কেহ কাহাকেও আপন হস্তে আঘাত করে ও তাহাতে সে মরে; তবে যে তাহাকে আঘাত করিয়াছে, তাহার প্রাণদণ্ড অবশ্য হইবে; সে নরহন্তা; রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতা তাহার দেখা পাইলেই সেই নরহন্তাকে বধ করিবে।

22 কিন্তু যদি শত্রুতা ব্যতিরেকে হঠাৎ কেহ কাহাকেও আঘাত করে, কিম্বা লক্ষ্য না করিয়া তাহার গাত্রে অস্ত্র নিক্ষেপ করে,

23 কিম্বা যাহা দ্বারা মরিতে পারে, এমন প্রস্তর কাহারও উপরে না দেখিয়া ফেলে, আর তাহাতেই সে মরে, অথচ সে তাহার শত্রু বা অনিষ্টচেষ্টাকারী ছিল না;

24 তবে মণ্ডলী সেই নরহন্তার এবং রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতার বিষয়ে এই সকল বিচারমতে বিচার করিবে;

25 আর মণ্ডলী রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতার হস্ত হইতে সেই নরহন্তাকে উদ্ধার করিবে; এবং সে যেখানে পলাইয়াছিল, তাহার সেই আশ্রয়-নগরে মণ্ডলী তাহাকে পুনর্ব্বার পৌঁছাইয়া দিবে; আর যে পর্য্যন্ত পবিত্র তৈলে অভিষিক্ত মহাযাজকের মৃত্যু না হয়, তাবৎ সে সেই নগরে থাকিবে।

26 কিন্তু সেই নরহন্তা যে আশ্রয়-নগরে পলাইয়াছে, কোন সময়ে যদি তাহার সীমার বহির্ভূত হয়,

27 এবং রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতা আশ্রয়নগরের সীমার বাহিরে তাহাকে পায়, তবে সেই রক্তের প্রতিশোধদাতা তাহাকে বধ করিলেও রক্তপাতের অপরাধী হইবে না।

28 কেননা মহাযাজকের মৃত্যু পর্য্যন্ত আপন আশ্রয়-নগরে থাকা তাহার উচিত ছিল; কিন্তু মহাযাজকের মৃত্যু হইলে পর সেই নরহন্তা আপন অধিকার-ভূমিতে ফিরিয়া যাইতে পারিবে।

29 তোমাদের পুরুষানুক্রমে তোমাদের সকল নিবাসে এই সমস্ত তোমাদের পক্ষে বিচার-বিধি হইবে।

30 যে ব্যক্তি কোন লোককে বধ করে, সেই নরহন্তা সাক্ষীদের কথায় হত হইবে; কিন্তু কোন লোকের প্রতিকূলে একমাত্র সাক্ষীর সাক্ষ্য প্রাণদণ্ডার্থে গ্রাহ্য হইবে না।

31 আর প্রাণদণ্ডের অপরাধী নরহন্তার প্রাণের জন্য তোমরা কোন প্রায়শ্চিত্ত গ্রহণ করিবে না; তাহার প্রাণদণ্ড অবশ্য হইবে।

32 আর যে কেহ আপন আশ্রয়-নগরে পলাইয়াছে, সে যেন যাজকের মরণের পূর্ব্বে পুনর্ব্বার দেশে আসিয়া বাস করিতে পায়, এই জন্য তাহা হইতে কোন প্রায়শ্চিত্ত গ্রহণ করিবে না।

33 এইরূপে তোমরা আপনাদের নিবাস-দেশ অপবিত্র করিবে না; কেননা রক্ত দেশকে অপবিত্র করে; এবং তথায় যে রক্তপাত হয়, তাহার জন্য রক্তপাতীর রক্তপাত ব্যতিরেকে দেশের প্রায়শ্চিত্ত হইতে পারে না।

34 আর তোমরা যে দেশ অধিকার করিবে, ও যাহার মধ্যে আমি বাস করি, তুমি তাহা অশুচি করিবে না; কেননা আমি সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণের মধ্যে বাস করি।

1 And the LORD ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 unto ^H413 Moses ^H4872 in the plains ^H6160 of Moab ^H4124 by ^H5921 Jordan ^H3383 near Jericho, ^H3405 saying, ^H559

2 Command ^H6680 ^H853 the children ^H1121 of Israel, ^H3478 that they give ^H5414 unto the Levites ^H3881 of the inheritance ^H4480 ^H5159 of their possession ^H272 cities ^H5892 to dwell in; ^H3427 and ye shall give ^H5414 also unto the Levites ^H3881 suburbs ^H4054 for the cities ^H5892 round about ^H5439 them.

3 And the cities ^H5892 shall they have ^H1961 to dwell in; ^H3427 and the suburbs ^H4054 of them shall be ^H1961 for their cattle, ^H929 and for their goods, ^H7399 and for all ^H3605 their beasts. ^H2416

4 And the suburbs ^H4054 of the cities, ^H5892 which ^H834 ye shall give ^H5414 unto the Levites, ^H3881 shall reach from the wall ^H4480 ^H7023 of the city ^H5892 and outward ^H2351 a thousand ^H505 cubits ^H520 round about. ^H5439

5 And ye shall measure ^H4058 from without ^H4480 ^H2351 the city ^H5892 on ^H853 the east ^H6924 side ^H6285 two thousand ^H505 cubits, ^H520 and on the south ^H5045 side ^H6285 two thousand ^H505 cubits, ^H520 and on the west ^H3220 side ^H6285 two thousand ^H505 cubits, ^H520 and on the north ^H6828 side ^H6285 two thousand ^H505 cubits; ^H520 and the city ^H5892 shall be in the midst: ^H8432 this ^H2088 shall be ^H1961 to them the suburbs ^H4054 of the cities. ^H5892

6 And among ^H854 the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 ye shall give ^H5414 unto the Levites ^H3881 there shall be ^H853 six ^H8337 cities ^H5892 for refuge, ^H4733 which ^H834 ye shall appoint ^H5414 for the manslayer, ^H7523 that he may flee ^H5127 thither: ^H8033 and to ^H5921 them ye shall add ^H5414 forty ^H705 and two ^H8147 cities. ^H5892

7 So all ^H3605 the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 ye shall give ^H5414 to the Levites ^H3881 shall be forty ^H705 and eight ^H8083 cities: ^H5892 them shall ye give with ^H854 their suburbs. ^H4054

8 And the cities ^H5892 which ^H834 ye shall give ^H5414 shall be of the possession ^H4480 ^H272 of the children ^H1121 of Israel: ^H3478 from ^H4480 ^H854 them that have many ^H7227 ye shall give many; ^H7235 but from ^H4480 ^H854 them that have few ^H4592 ye shall give few: ^H4591 every one ^H376 shall give ^H5414 of his cities ^H4480 ^H5892 unto the Levites ^H3881 according to ^H6310 his inheritance ^H5159 which ^H834 he inheriteth. ^H5157

9 And the LORD ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 unto ^H413 Moses, ^H4872 saying, ^H559

10 Speak ^H1696 unto ^H413 the children ^H1121 of Israel, ^H3478 and say ^H559 unto ^H413 them, When ^H3588 ye ^H859 be come over ^H5674 ^H853 Jordan ^H3383 into the land ^H776 of Canaan; ^H3667

11 Then ye shall appoint ^H7136 you cities ^H5892 to be ^H1961 cities ^H5892 of refuge ^H4733 for you ; that the slayer ^H7523 may flee ^H5127 thither, ^H8033 which killeth ^H5221 any person ^H5315 at unawares. ^H7684

12 And they shall be ^H1961 unto you cities ^H5892 for refuge ^H4733 from the avenger ^H4480 ^H1350 ; that the manslayer ^H7523 die ^H4191 not, ^H3808 until ^H5704 he stand ^H5975 before ^H6440 the congregation ^H5712 in judgment. ^H4941

13 And of these cities ^H5892 which ^H834 ye shall give ^H5414 six ^H8337 cities ^H5892 shall ye have ^H1961 for refuge. ^H4733

14 Ye shall give ^H5414 ^H853 three ^H7969 cities ^H5892 on this side ^H4480 ^H5676 Jordan, ^H3383 and three ^H7969 cities ^H5892 shall ye give ^H5414 in the land ^H776 of Canaan, ^H3667 which shall be ^H1961 cities ^H5892 of refuge. ^H4733

15 These ^H428 six ^H8337 cities ^H5892 shall be ^H1961 a refuge, ^H4733 both for the children ^H1121 of Israel, ^H3478 and for the stranger, ^H1616 and for the sojourner ^H8453 among ^H8432 them : that every one ^H3605 that killeth ^H5221 any person ^H5315 unawares ^H7684 may flee ^H5127 thither. ^H8033

16 And if ^H518 he smite ^H5221 him with an instrument ^H3627 of iron, ^H1270 so that he die, ^H4191 he ^H1931 is a murderer: ^H7523 the murderer ^H7523 shall surely be put to death ^H4191 ^H4191 .

17 And if ^H518 he smite ^H5221 him with throwing ^H3027 a stone, ^H68 wherewith ^H834 he may die, ^H4191 and he die, ^H4191 he ^H1931 is a murderer: ^H7523 the murderer ^H7523 shall surely be put to death ^H4191 ^H4191 .

18 Or ^H176 if he smite ^H5221 him with a hand ^H3027 weapon ^H3627 of wood, ^H6086 wherewith ^H834 he may die, ^H4191 and he die, ^H4191 he ^H1931 is a murderer: ^H7523 the murderer ^H7523 shall surely be put to death ^H4191 ^H4191 .

19 The revenger ^H1350 of blood ^H1818 himself ^H1931 shall slay ^H4191 ^H853 the murderer: ^H7523 when he meeteth ^H6293 him, he ^H1931 shall slay ^H4191 him.

20 But if ^H518 he thrust ^H1920 him of hatred, ^H8135 or ^H176 hurl ^H7993 at ^H5921 him by laying of wait, ^H6660 that he die; ^H4191

21 Or ^H176 in enmity ^H342 smite ^H5221 him with his hand, ^H3027 that he die: ^H4191 he that smote ^H5221 him shall surely be put to death ^H4191 ^H4191 ; for he ^H1931 is a murderer: ^H7523 the revenger ^H1350 of blood ^H1818 shall slay ^H4191 ^H853 the murderer, ^H7523 when he meeteth ^H6293 him.

22 But if ^H518 he thrust ^H1920 him suddenly ^H6621 without ^H3808 enmity, ^H342 or ^H176 have cast ^H7993 upon ^H5921 him any thing ^H3605 ^H3627 without ^H3808 laying of wait, ^H6660

23 Or ^H176 with any ^H3605 stone, ^H68 wherewith ^H834 a man may die, ^H4191 seeing ^H7200 him not, ^H3808 and cast ^H5307 it upon ^H5921 him , that he die, ^H4191 and was not ^H3808 his enemy, ^H341 neither ^H3808 sought ^H1245 his harm: ^H7451

24 Then the congregation ^H5712 shall judge ^H8199 between ^H996 the slayer ^H5221 and the revenger ^H1350 of blood ^H1818 according to ^H5921 these ^H428 judgments: ^H4941

25 And the congregation ^H5712 shall deliver ^H5337 ^H853 the slayer ^H7523 out of the hand ^H4480 ^H3027 of the revenger ^H1350 of blood, ^H1818 and the congregation ^H5712 shall restore ^H7725 him to ^H413 the city ^H5892 of his refuge, ^H4733 whither ^H834 ^H8033 he was fled: ^H5127 and he shall abide ^H3427 in it unto ^H5704 the death ^H4194 of the high ^H1419 priest, ^H3548 which ^H834 was anointed ^H4886 with the holy ^H6944 oil. ^H8081

26 But if ^H518 the slayer ^H7523 shall at any time come without ^H3318 ^H3318 ^H853 the border ^H1366 of the city ^H5892 of his refuge, ^H4733 whither ^H834 ^H8033 he was fled; ^H5127

27 And the revenger ^H1350 of blood ^H1818 find ^H4672 him without ^H4480 ^H2351 the borders ^H1366 of the city ^H5892 of his refuge, ^H4733 and the revenger ^H1350 of blood ^H1818 kill ^H7523 ^H853 the slayer; ^H7523 he shall not ^H369 be guilty of blood: ^H1818

28 Because ^H3588 he should have remained ^H3427 in the city ^H5892 of his refuge ^H4733 until ^H5704 the death ^H4194 of the high ^H1419 priest: ^H3548 but after ^H310 the death ^H4194 of the high ^H1419 priest ^H3548 the slayer ^H7523 shall return ^H7725 into ^H413 the land ^H776 of his possession. ^H272

29 So these ^H428 things shall be ^H1961 for a statute ^H2708 of judgment ^H4941 unto you throughout your generations ^H1755 in all ^H3605 your dwellings. ^H4186

30 Whoso ^H3605 killeth ^H5221 any person, ^H5315 ^H853 the murderer ^H7523 shall be put to death ^H7523 by the mouth ^H6310 of witnesses: ^H5707 but one ^H259 witness ^H5707 shall not ^H3808 testify ^H6030 against any person ^H5315 to cause him to die. ^H4191

31 Moreover ye shall take ^H3947 no ^H3808 satisfaction ^H3724 for the life ^H5315 of a murderer, ^H7523 which ^H834 is guilty ^H7563 of death: ^H4191 but ^H3588 he shall be surely put to death ^H4191 ^H4191 .

32 And ye shall take ^H3947 no ^H3808 satisfaction ^H3724 for him that is fled ^H5127 to ^H413 the city ^H5892 of his refuge, ^H4733 that he should come again ^H7725 to dwell ^H3427 in the land, ^H776 until ^H5704 the death ^H4194 of the priest. ^H3548

33 So ye shall not ^H3808 pollute ^H2610 ^H853 the land ^H776 wherein ^H834 ye ^H859 are : for ^H3588 blood ^H1818 it ^H1931 defileth ^H2610 ^H853 the land: ^H776 and the land ^H776 cannot ^H3808 be cleansed ^H3722 of the blood ^H1818 that ^H834 is shed ^H8210 therein, but ^H3588 ^H518 by the blood ^H1818 of him that shed ^H8210 it.

34 Defile ^H2930 not ^H3808 therefore ^H853 the land ^H776 which ^H834 ye ^H859 shall inhabit, ^H3427 wherein ^H834 ^H8432 I ^H589 dwell: ^H7931 for ^H3588 I ^H589 the LORD ^H3068 dwell ^H7931 among ^H8432 the children ^H1121 of Israel. ^H3478
