2 Chronicles 28:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
2 He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and also made cast idols for worshipping the Baals.
3 He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire, following the detestable ways of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.
5 Therefore the LORD his God handed him over to the king of Aram. The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him.
6 In one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed a hundred and twenty thousand soldiers in Judah--because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.
7 Zicri, an Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah the king's son, Azrikam the officer in charge of the palace, and Elkanah, second to the king.
8 The Israelites took captive from their kinsmen two hundred thousand wives, sons and daughters. They also took a great deal of plunder, which they carried back to Samaria.
9 But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army when it returned to Samaria. He said to them, "Because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches to heaven.
10 And now you intend to make the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves. But aren't you also guilty of sins against the LORD your God?
11 Now listen to me! Send back your fellow countrymen that you have taken as prisoners, for the LORD's fierce anger rests on you."
12 Then some of the leaders in Ephraim--Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berekiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai--confronted those who were arriving from the war.
13 "You must not bring those prisoners here," they said, "or we will be guilty before the LORD. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel."
14 So the soldiers gave up the prisoners and plunder in the presence of the officials and all the assembly.
15 The men designated by name took the prisoners, and from the plunder they clothed all who were naked. They provided them with clothes and sandals, food and drink, and healing balm. All those who were weak they put on donkeys. So they took them back to their fellow countrymen at Jericho, the City of Palms, and returned to Samaria.
16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the king of Assyria for help.
17 The Edomites had again come and attacked Judah and carried away prisoners,
18 while the Philistines had raided towns in the foothills and in the Negev of Judah. They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon and Gederoth, as well as Soco, Timnah and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages.
19 The LORD had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
20 Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came to him, but gave him trouble instead of help.
21 Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the LORD and from the royal palace and from the princes and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.
22 In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.
23 He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, "Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so that they will help me." But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.
24 Ahaz gathered together the furnishings from the temple of God and took them away. He shut the doors of the LORD's temple and set up altars at every street corner in Jerusalem.
25 In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers, to anger.
26 The other events of his reign and all his ways, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
27 Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.

2 For he walked H1980 W-VQY3MS in the ways H1870 of the kings H4428 CMP of Israel H3478 , and made H6213 VQQ3MS also H1571 W-CONJ molten images H4541 for Baalim H1168 .
3 Moreover he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS burnt incense H6999 in the valley H1516 of the son H1121 CMS of Hinnom H2011 , and burnt H1197 his children H1121 CMP-3MS in the fire H784 , after the abominations H8441 of the heathen H1471 D-NMP whom H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 had cast out H3423 before H6440 M-CMP the children H1121 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
4 He sacrificed H2076 also and burnt incense H6999 in the high places H1116 , and on H5921 W-PREP the hills H1389 , and under H8478 every H3605 NMS green H7488 tree H6086 NMS .
5 Wherefore the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 CMP-3MS delivered H5414 him into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS ; and they smote H5221 W-VHY3MP him , and carried away H7617 a great H1419 AFS multitude of H4480 M-PREP-3MS them captives H7633 , and brought H935 them to Damascus H1834 . And he was also H1571 W-CONJ delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , who smote H5221 W-VHY3MS him with a great H1419 AFS slaughter H4347 .
6 For Pekah H6492 the son H1121 of Remaliah H7425 slew H2026 in Judah H3063 a hundred H3967 MFS and twenty H6242 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS in one H259 MMS day H3117 B-NMS , which were all H3605 valiant men H1121 ; because they had forsaken H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of their fathers H1 CMP-3MP .
7 And Zichri H2147 , a mighty man H1368 AMS of Ephraim H669 , slew H2026 Maaseiah H4641 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s son H1121 , and Azrikam H5840 the governor H5057 of the house H1004 , and Elkanah H511 that was next H4932 to the king H4428 .
8 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 carried away captive H7617 of their brethren H251 two hundred H3967 MFD thousand H505 W-BMS , women H802 GFP , sons H1121 NMP , and daughters H1323 W-CFP , and took also away H962 much H7227 AMS spoil H7998 from H4480 them , and brought H935 the spoil H7998 to Samaria H8111 .
9 But a prophet H5030 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS was H1961 VQQ3MS there H8033 W-ADV , whose name H8034 CMS-3MS was Oded H5752 : and he went out H3318 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP the host H6635 that came H935 to Samaria H8111 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Behold H2009 IJEC , because the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 of your fathers H1 was wroth H2534 with H5921 PREP Judah H3063 , he hath delivered H5414 them into your hand H3027 B-CFS-2MP , and ye have slain H2026 them in a rage H2197 that reacheth up H5060 unto H5704 PREP heaven H8064 LD-NMP .
10 And now H6258 W-ADV ye H859 PPRO-2MS purpose H559 to keep under H3533 the children H1121 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 for bondmen H5650 and bondwomen H8198 unto you : but are there not H3808 I-NADV with H5973 PREP-3MP you , even H7535 ADV with you H859 PPRO-2MS , sins H819 against the LORD H3068 L-EDS your God H430 ?
11 Now H6258 W-ADV hear H8085 me therefore , and deliver H7725 the captives H7633 again , which H834 RPRO ye have taken captive H7617 of your brethren H251 : for H3588 CONJ the fierce H2740 CMS wrath H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is upon H5921 PREP-2MP you .
12 Then certain H376 NMP of the heads H7218 of the children H1121 of Ephraim H669 , Azariah H5838 the son H1121 CMS of Johanan H3076 , Berechiah H1296 the son H1121 CMS of Meshillemoth H4919 , and Jehizkiah H3169 the son H1121 of Shallum H7967 , and Amasa H6021 the son H1121 of Hadlai H2311 , stood up H6965 against H5921 PREP them that came H935 from H4480 PREP the war H6635 ,
13 And said H559 W-VQY3MP unto them , Ye shall not H3808 NADV bring in the captives H7633 hither H2008 ADV : for whereas H3588 CONJ we have offended against H5921 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS already , ye H859 PPRO-2MS intend H559 to add H3254 more to H5921 PREP our sins H2403 and to H5921 PREP our trespass H819 : for H3588 CONJ our trespass H819 is great H7227 AFS , and there is fierce H2740 wrath H639 NMS against H5921 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
14 So the armed men H2502 left H5800 the captives H7633 and the spoil H961 before H6440 L-CMP the princes H8269 and all H3605 W-CMS the congregation H6951 .
15 And the men H376 D-NMP which H834 RPRO were expressed H5344 by name H8034 rose up H6965 , and took H2388 the captives H7633 , and with H4480 PREP the spoil H7998 clothed H3847 all H3605 that were naked H4636 among them , and arrayed H3847 them , and shod H5274 them , and gave them to eat H398 and to drink H8248 , and anointed H5480 them , and carried H5095 all H3605 L-CMS the feeble H3782 VQPMS of them upon asses H2543 , and brought H935 them to Jericho H3405 , the city of palm trees H5899 , to H681 their brethren H251 : then they returned H7725 to Samaria H8111 .
16 At that H1931 time H6256 did king H4428 D-NMS Ahaz H271 send H7971 VQQ3MS unto H5921 PREP the kings H4428 CMP of Assyria H804 GFS to help H5826 him .
17 For again H5750 W-ADV the Edomites H130 had come H935 VQQ3MP and smitten H5221 W-VHY3MP Judah H3063 , and carried away H7617 captives H7628 .
18 The Philistines H6430 also had invaded H6584 the cities H5892 B-CFP of the low country H8219 , and of the south H5045 of Judah H3063 , and had taken H3920 Beth H1053 - shemesh , and Ajalon H357 , and Gederoth H1450 , and Shocho H7755 with the villages H1323 CFP-3FS thereof , and Timnah H8553 with the villages H1323 CFP-3FS thereof , Gimzo H1579 also and the villages H1323 thereof : and they dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP there H8033 ADV .
19 For H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS brought H3665 Judah H3063 low because of H5668 B-NMS Ahaz H271 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 ; for H3588 CONJ he made Judah naked H6544 , and transgressed H4603 sore H4604 against the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
20 And Tiglath H8407 - pileser king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H5921 PREP-3MS him , and distressed H6696 him , but strengthened H2388 him not H3808 W-NPAR .
21 For H3588 CONJ Ahaz H271 took away a portion H2505 VQQ3MS out of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and out of the house H1004 CMS of the king H4428 D-NMS , and of the princes H8269 , and gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS it unto the king H4428 L-CMS of Assyria H804 GFS : but he helped H5833 him not H3808 W-NPAR .
22 And in the time H6256 of his distress H6887 did he trespass H4603 yet more H3254 against the LORD H3068 : this H1931 PPRO-3MS is that king H4428 D-NMS Ahaz H271 .
23 For he sacrificed H2076 unto the gods H430 of Damascus H1834 , which smote H5221 him : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Because H3588 CONJ the gods H430 CDP of the kings H4428 of Syria H758 EMS help H5826 them , therefore will I sacrifice H2076 to them , that they may help H5826 me . But they H1992 PPRO-3MP were H1961 the ruin H3782 of him , and of all H3605 Israel H3478 LMS .
24 And Ahaz H271 gathered together H622 the vessels H3627 of the house H1004 CMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MS , and cut in pieces H7112 the vessels H3627 of the house H1004 CMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP , and shut up H5462 W-VQY3MS the doors H1817 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and he made H6213 W-VQY3MS him altars H4196 in every H3605 B-CMS corner H6438 of Jerusalem H3389 .
25 And in every H3605 WB-CMS several city H5892 GFS of Judah H3063 he made H6213 VQQ3MS high places H1116 to burn incense H6999 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 L-NMP , and provoked to anger H3707 the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of his fathers H1 .
26 Now the rest H3499 of his acts H1697 CMP-3MS and of all H3605 W-CMS his ways H1870 CMP-3MS , first H7223 and last H314 , behold H2009 , they are written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the kings H4428 of Judah H3063 and Israel H3478 .
27 And Ahaz H271 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and they buried H6912 him in the city H5892 BD-NFS , even in Jerusalem H3389 : but H3588 CONJ they brought H935 him not H3808 NADV into the sepulchers H6913 of the kings H4428 CMP of Israel H3478 : and Hezekiah H3169 his son H1121 reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
