2 Samuel 3:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
2 Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel;
3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
4 the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David's wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.
6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul.
7 Now Saul had had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, "Why did you sleep with my father's concubine?"
8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said and he answered, "Am I a dog's head--on Judah's side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven't handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offence involving this woman!
9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD promised him on oath
10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David's throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba."
11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, "Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you."
13 "Good," said David. "I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me."
14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, "Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins."
15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband Paltiel son of Laish.
16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, "Go back home!" So he went back.
17 Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, "For some time you have wanted to make David your king.
18 Now do it! For the LORD promised David,`By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies.'"
19 Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole house of Benjamin wanted to do.
20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast for him and his men.
21 Then Abner said to David, "Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a compact with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires." So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
22 Just then David's men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.
23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.
24 So Joab went to the king and said, "What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone!
25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing."
26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it.
27 Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the gateway, as though to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.
28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, "I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before the LORD concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.
29 May his blood fall upon the head of Joab and upon all his father's house! May Joab's house never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food."
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle of Gibeon.)
31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, "Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner." King David himself walked behind the bier.
32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept aloud at Abner's tomb. All the people wept also.
33 The king sang this lament for Abner: "Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34 Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. You fell as one falls before wicked men." And all the people wept over him again.
35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!"
36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them.
37 So on that day all the people and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
38 Then the king said to his men, "Do you not realise that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel this day?
39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the LORD repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!"

3 And his second H4932 , Chileab H3609 , of Abigail H26 the wife H802 CFS of Nabal H5037 the Carmelite H3761 ; and the third H7992 , Absalom H53 the son H1121 of Maacah H4601 the daughter H1323 CFS of Talmai H8526 king H4428 NMS of Geshur H1650 ;
4 And the fourth H7243 , Adonijah H138 the son H1121 CMS of Haggith H2294 ; and the fifth H2549 , Shephatiah H8203 the son H1121 CMS of Abital H37 ;
5 And the sixth H8345 , Ithream H3507 , by Eglah H5698 David H1732 L-NAME \'s wife H802 CFS . These H428 PMP were born H3205 VWQ3MP to David H1732 L-NAME in Hebron H2275 .
6 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , while there was H1961 war H4421 between H996 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Saul H7586 and the house H1004 CMS of David H1732 MMS , that Abner H74 made himself strong H2388 for the house H1004 B-CMS of Saul H7586 .
7 And Saul H7586 had a concubine H6370 , whose name H8034 was Rizpah H7532 , the daughter H1323 of Aiah H345 : and W-VQY3MS Ish H559 W-VQY3MS - bosheth H559 W-VQY3MS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Abner H74 , Wherefore H4069 IPRO hast thou gone H935 in unto H413 PREP my father H1 \'s concubine H6370 ?
8 Then was Abner H74 very H3966 ADV wroth H2734 W-VQY3MS for H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of Ish H378 - bosheth , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Am I H595 PPRO-1MS a dog H3611 \'s head H7218 , which H834 RPRO against Judah H3063 do show H6213 VQY1MS kindness H2617 NMS this day H3117 D-AMS unto H5973 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Saul H7586 thy father H1 NMS , to H413 PREP his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , and to H413 PREP his friends H4828 , and have not H3808 W-NPAR delivered H4672 thee into the hand H3027 B-CFS of David H1732 MMS , that thou chargest H6485 me today H3117 D-NMS with a fault H5771 concerning this woman H802 D-NFS ?
9 So H3541 do H6213 VQY3MS God H430 EDP to Abner H74 , and more H3254 VHY3MS also H3541 , except H3588 CONJ , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath sworn H7650 to David H1732 L-NAME , even H3588 CONJ so H3651 ADV I do H6213 VQY1MS to him ;
10 To translate H5674 the kingdom H4467 from the house H1004 of Saul H7586 , and to set up H6965 the throne H3678 of David H1732 over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 and over H5921 PREP Judah H3063 , from Dan H1835 even to H5704 W-PREP Beer H884 - sheba .
11 And he could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR answer H7725 L-VHFC Abner H74 a word H1697 VQPMS again H5750 ADV , because he feared H3372 him .
12 And Abner H74 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS on his behalf H8478 PREP-3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Whose H4310 L-IPRO is the land H776 NFS ? saying H559 L-VQFC also , Make H3772 thy league H1285 with H854 PREP-1MS me , and , behold H2009 IJEC , my hand H3027 CFS-1MS shall be with H5973 PREP-2FS thee , to bring about H5437 all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 LMS unto H413 PREP thee .
13 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Well H2896 AMS ; I H589 PPRO-1MS will make H3772 a league H1285 NFS with H854 PART-2MS thee : but H389 ADV one H259 MMS thing H1697 VQPMS I H595 PPRO-1MS require H7592 of thee , that is H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV see H7200 VQY2MS my face H6440 L-CMP , except H518 PART thou first H6440 L-CMP bring H935 Michal H4324 Saul H7586 \'s daughter H1323 CFS , when thou comest H935 to see H7200 L-VQFC my face H6440 L-CMP .
14 And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 to H413 PREP Ish H378 - bosheth Saul H7586 \'s son H1121 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Deliver H5414 me my wife H802 CFS-1MS Michal H4324 , which H834 RPRO I espoused H781 to me for a hundred H3967 foreskins H6190 of the Philistines H6430 .
15 And Ish H378 - bosheth sent H7971 W-VQY3MS , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS her from her husband H376 NMS , even from Phaltiel H6409 the son H1121 of Laish H3919 .
16 And her husband H376 went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H854 her along H1980 VQFA weeping H1058 behind H310 her to H5704 PREP Bahurim H980 . Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Abner H74 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Go H1980 VQI2MS , return H7725 VQFC . And he returned H7725 .
17 And Abner H74 had H1961 VQQ3MS communication H1697 W-CMS with H5973 PREP the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Ye sought H1961 VQQ2MP for David H1732 MMS in times H1571 CONJ past H1571 CONJ to be king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP-2MP you :
18 Now H6258 W-ADV then do H6213 it : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H559 VQQ3MS of H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , By the hand H3027 B-CFS of my servant H5650 CMS-1MS David H1732 MMS I will save H3467 my people H5971 Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the Philistines H6430 TMS , and out of the hand H3027 WM-GFS of all H3605 NMS their enemies H341 .
19 And Abner H74 also H1571 CONJ spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS in the ears H241 of Benjamin H1144 : and Abner H74 went H1980 W-VQY3MS also H1571 CONJ to speak H1696 in the ears H241 of David H1732 in Hebron H2275 B-EFS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO seemed good H2896 AMS to Israel H3478 , and that seemed good H5869 B-CMP to the whole H3605 NMS house H1004 CMS of Benjamin H1144 .
20 So Abner H74 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS to Hebron H2275 , and twenty H6242 men H376 NMP with H854 him . And David H1732 MMS made H6213 W-VQY3MS Abner H74 and the men H376 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him a feast H4960 .
21 And Abner H74 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , I will arise H6965 VQI1MS and go H1980 , and will gather H6908 all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 unto H413 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS , that they may make H3772 a league H1285 NFS with H854 PART-2MS thee , and that thou mayest reign H4427 over all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO thine heart H5315 desireth H183 . And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 Abner H74 away ; and he went H1980 W-VQY3MS in peace H7965 .
22 And , behold H2009 IJEC , the servants H5650 of David H1732 and Joab H3097 came H935 VQPMS from pursuing a troop H1416 , and brought H935 in a great H7227 AMS spoil H7998 with H5973 PREP-3MP them : but Abner H74 was not H369 with H5973 PREP David H1732 MMS in Hebron H2275 B-EFS ; for H3588 CONJ he had sent him away H7971 , and he was gone H1980 W-VQY3MS in peace H7965 .
23 When Joab H3097 and all H3605 W-CMS the host H6635 that H834 RPRO was with H854 PREP-3MS him were come H935 VQQ3MP , they told H5046 Joab H3097 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 came H935 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and he hath sent him away H7971 W-VPY3MS-3MS , and he is gone H1980 W-VQY3MS in peace H7965 .
24 Then Joab H3097 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 L-IPRO hast thou done H6213 ? behold H2009 IJEC , Abner H74 came H935 unto H413 PREP thee ; why H4100 L-IPRO is it that thou hast sent him away H7971 , and he is quite gone H1980 W-VQY3MS ?
25 Thou knowest H3045 VQQ2MS Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 , that H3588 CONJ he came H935 VQPMS to deceive H6601 thee , and to know H3045 VQQ2MS thy going out H4161 and thy coming in H4126 , and to know H3045 VQQ2MS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS doest H6213 .
26 And when Joab H3097 was come out H3318 W-VQY3MS from M-PREP David H1732 MMS , he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 after H310 PREP Abner H74 , which brought him again H7725 from the well H953 of Sirah H5626 : but David H1732 knew H3045 it not H3808 NADV .
27 And when Abner H74 was returned H7725 to Hebron H2275 , Joab H3097 took him aside H5186 in PREP the gate H8179 to speak H1696 with H854 PREP-3MS him quietly H7987 , and smote H5221 him there H8033 ADV under the fifth H2570 rib , that he died H4191 W-VQY3MS , for the blood H1818 of Asahel H6214 his brother H251 CMP-3MS .
28 And afterward H310 when David H1732 MMS heard H8085 it , he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H595 PPRO-1MS and my kingdom H4467 are guiltless H5355 AMS before H5973 M-PREP the LORD H3068 EDS forever H5704 from the blood H1818 of Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 :
29 Let it rest H2342 on H5921 PREP the head H7218 NMS of Joab H3097 , and on H413 W-PREP all H3605 NMS his father H1 CMS-3MS \'s house H1004 CMS ; and let there not H408 fail H3772 VNI3MS from the house H1004 of Joab H3097 one that hath an issue H2100 , or that is a leper H6879 , or that leaneth H2388 on a staff H6418 , or that falleth H5307 on the sword H2719 , or that lacketh H2638 bread H3899 NMS .
30 So Joab H3097 and Abishai H52 his brother H251 CMS-3MS slew H2026 Abner H74 , because H5921 PREP he had slain H4191 their brother H251 CMS-3MP Asahel H6214 at Gibeon H1391 in the battle H4421 .
31 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , and to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , Rend H7167 your clothes H899 , and gird H2296 you with sackcloth H8242 NMP , and mourn H5594 before H6440 L-CMP Abner H74 . And king H4428 David H1732 MMS himself followed H310 PREP the bier H4296 .
32 And they buried H6912 Abner H74 in Hebron H2275 B-EFS : and the king H4428 D-NMS lifted up H5375 his voice H6963 , and wept H1058 at H413 PREP the grave H6913 of Abner H74 ; and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 D-NMS wept H1058 W-VQY3MP .
33 And the king H4428 D-NMS lamented H6969 over H413 PREP Abner H74 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Died H4191 VQY3MS Abner H74 as a fool H5036 AMS dieth H4194 ?
34 Thy hands H3027 CFS-2MS were not H3808 ADV bound H631 , nor H3808 NADV thy feet H7272 put H5066 into fetters H5178 : as a man H1121 falleth H5307 before H6440 L-CMP wicked H5766 NFS men H1121 , so fellest H5307 thou . And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 wept H1058 again H3254 over H5921 him .
35 And when all H3605 CMS the people H5971 came H935 W-VQY3MS to cause David H1732 MMS to eat H1262 meat H3899 NMS while it was yet H5750 B-ADV day H3117 D-AMS , David H1732 MMS swore H7650 , saying H559 L-VQFC , So H3541 do H6213 VQY3MS God H430 EDP to me , and more H3254 VHY3MS also H3541 , if H518 PART I taste H2938 bread H3899 NMS , or H176 CONJ aught else H3605 CMS , till H6440 L-CMP the sun H8121 D-NMS be down H935 .
36 And all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 took notice H5234 VHQ3MP of it , and it pleased them H3190 : as whatsoever H3605 K-NMS the king H4428 D-NMS did H6213 VQQ3MS pleased H2895 all H3605 CMS the people H5971 .
37 For all H3605 CMS the people H5971 and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 understood H3045 W-VQY3MP that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS that H3588 CONJ it was H1961 VQQ3FS not H3808 NADV of the king H4428 to slay H4191 Abner H74 the son H1121 of Ner H5369 .
38 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his servants H5650 , Know H3045 ye not H3808 D-NPAR that H3588 CONJ there is a prince H8269 and a great man H1419 W-AMS fallen H5307 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS in Israel H3478 ?
39 And I H595 W-PPRO-1MS am this day H3117 D-AMS weak H7390 , though anointed H4886 king H4428 NMS ; and these H428 D-DPRO-3MP men H376 the sons H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 be too hard H7186 for H4480 M-PREP-1MS me : the LORD H3068 EDS shall reward H7999 VPY3MS the doer H6213 of evil H7451 D-AFS according to his wickedness H7451 .
