Luke 11:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: "`Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'"
5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says,`Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.'
7 "Then the one inside answers,`Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.'
8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.
15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons."
16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.
18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub.
19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.
22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armour in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils.
23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.
24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says,`I will return to the house I left.'
25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.
26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first."
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you."
28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
33 "No-one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.
34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness.
35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you."
37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised.
39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41 But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practised the latter without leaving the former undone.
43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the market-places.
44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it."
45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also."
46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them.
48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said,`I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'
50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.

2 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , When G3752 CONJ ye pray G4336 V-PNS-2P , say G3004 V-PAM-2P , Our G2257 P-1GP Father G3962 N-VSM which G3588 T-NSM art in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM , Hallowed G37 V-APM-3S be thy G3588 T-NSN name G3686 N-NSN . Thy G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF come G2064 V-2AAM-3S . Thy G3588 T-NSN will G2307 N-NSN be done G1096 V-AOM-3S , as G5613 ADV in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM , so G2532 CONJ in G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-GSF .
3 Give G1325 V-PAM-2S us G3588 T-ASN day by day G2596 PREP our G3588 T-ASM daily G1967 A-ASM bread G740 N-ASM .
4 And G2532 CONJ forgive G863 V-2AAM-2S us G2254 P-1DP our G3588 T-APF sins G266 N-APF ; for G1063 CONJ we G846 P-NPM also G2532 CONJ forgive G863 V-PAI-1P every one G3956 A-DSM that is indebted G3784 V-PAP-DSM to us G2254 P-1DP . And G2532 CONJ lead G1533 V-AAS-2S us G2248 P-1AP not G3361 PRT-N into G1519 PREP temptation G3986 N-ASM ; but G235 CONJ deliver G4506 V-ADM-2S us G2248 P-1AP from G575 PREP evil G4190 A-GSM .
5 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Which G5101 I-NSM of G1537 PREP you G5216 P-2GP shall have G2192 V-FAI-3S a friend G5384 A-ASM , and G2532 CONJ shall go G4198 V-FDI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM at midnight G3317 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ say G2036 V-2AAS-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Friend G5384 N-VSM , lend G5531 V-AAM-2S me G3427 P-1DS three G5140 A-APM loaves G740 N-APM ;
6 For G1894 CONJ a friend G5384 A-NSM of mine G3450 in G1537 PREP his journey G3598 N-GSF is come G3854 V-2ADI-3S to G4314 PREP me G3165 P-1AS , and G2532 CONJ I have G2192 V-PAI-1S nothing G3756 PRT-N to G3739 R-ASN set before G3908 V-FAI-1S him G846 P-DSM ?
7 And he G2548 D-NSM-C from within G2081 ADV shall answer G611 V-AOP-NSM and say G2036 V-2AAS-3S , Trouble me not G3930 V-PAM-2S : the G3588 T-NSF door G2374 N-NSF is now G2235 ADV shut G2808 V-RPI-3S , and G2532 CONJ my G3588 T-NPN children G3813 N-NPN are G1526 V-PXI-3P with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS in G1519 PREP bed G2845 N-ASF ; I cannot G1410 V-PNI-1S rise G450 V-2AAP-NSM and give G1325 V-2AAN thee G4671 P-2DS .
8 I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Though G1499 he will not G3756 PRT-N rise G450 V-2AAP-NSM and give G1325 V-FAI-3S him G846 P-DSM , because he is G1511 V-PXN his G846 P-GSM friend G5384 A-ASM , yet G1065 PRT because G1223 PREP of G3588 T-ASF his G3588 T-ASF importunity G335 N-ASF he will rise G1453 V-APP-NSM and give G1325 V-FAI-3S him G846 P-DSM as many as G3745 he needeth G5535 V-PAI-3S .
9 And I G2504 P-1NS-C say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Ask G154 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ it shall be given G1325 V-FPI-3S you G5213 P-2DP ; seek G2212 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ ye shall find G2147 V-FAI-2P ; knock G2925 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ it shall be opened G455 V-2FPI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP .
10 For G1063 CONJ every one G3956 A-NSM that asketh G154 V-PAP-NSM receiveth G2983 V-PAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ he that seeketh G2212 V-PAP-NSM findeth G2147 V-PAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ to him that knocketh G2925 V-PAP-DSM it shall be opened G455 V-2FPI-3S .
11 If G1161 CONJ a son G5207 N-NSM shall ask G154 V-FAI-3S bread G740 N-ASM of any G5101 I-ASM of you G5216 P-2GP that is a father G3962 N-ASM , will he G3361 PRT-N give G1929 V-FAI-3S him G846 P-DSM a stone G3037 N-ASM ? or G2532 CONJ if G1487 he ask a fish G2486 N-ASM , will G3361 PRT-N he for G473 PREP a fish G2486 N-GSM give G1929 V-FAI-3S him G846 P-DSM a serpent G3789 N-ASM ?
12 Or G2228 PRT if G1437 COND he shall ask G154 V-AAS-3S an egg G5609 N-ASN , will he G3361 PRT-N offer G1929 V-FAI-3S him G846 P-DSM a scorpion G4651 N-ASM ?
13 If G1487 COND ye G5210 P-2NP then G3767 CONJ , being G5225 V-PAP-NPM evil G4190 A-NPM , know G1492 V-RAI-2P how to give G1325 V-PAN good G18 A-APN gifts G1390 N-APN unto your G3588 T-DPN children G5043 N-DPN : how much G4214 Q-DSN more G3123 ADV shall your G3588 T-NSM heavenly G3772 N-GSM Father G3962 N-NSM give G1325 V-FAI-3S the Holy G40 A-ASN Spirit G4151 N-ASN to them that ask G154 V-PAP-DPM him G846 P-ASM ?
14 And G2532 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S casting out G1544 V-PAP-NSM a devil G1140 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ it G846 P-NSN was G2258 V-IXI-3S dumb G2974 A-NSN . And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , when the G3588 T-GSN devil G1140 N-GSN was gone out G1831 V-2AAP-GSN , the G3588 T-NSM dumb G2974 A-NSM spake G2980 V-AAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM people G3793 N-NPM wondered G2296 V-AAI-3P .
15 But G1161 CONJ some G5100 X-NPM of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , He G3588 T-GPN casteth out G1544 V-PAI-3S devils G1140 N-GPN through G1722 PREP Beelzebub G954 N-PRI the chief G758 N-DSM of G3588 T-APN the G3588 T-APN devils G1140 N-APN .
16 And G1161 CONJ others G2087 A-NPM , tempting G3985 V-PAP-NPM him , sought G2212 V-IAI-3P of G3844 PREP him G846 P-GSM a sign G4592 N-ASN from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM .
17 But G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM , knowing G1492 V-RAP-NSM their G3588 T-APN thoughts G1270 N-APN , said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Every G3956 A-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF divided G1266 V-APP-NSF against G1909 PREP itself G1438 F-3ASF is brought to desolation G2049 V-PPI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ a house G3624 N-NSM divided against G1909 PREP a house G3624 N-ASM falleth G4098 V-PAI-3S .
18 If G1487 COND Satan G4567 N-NSM also G2532 CONJ be divided G1266 V-API-3S against G1909 PREP himself G1438 F-3ASM , how G4459 ADV-I shall his G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF stand G2476 V-FPI-3S ? because G3754 CONJ ye say G3004 V-PAI-2P that I G3165 P-1AS cast out G1544 V-PAN devils G1140 N-APN through G1722 PREP Beelzebub G954 N-PRI .
19 And G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND I G1473 P-1NS by G1722 PREP Beelzebub G954 N-PRI cast out G1544 V-PAI-1S devils G1140 N-APN , by G1722 PREP whom G5101 I-DSM do your G3588 T-NPM sons G5207 N-NPM cast them out G1544 V-PAI-3P ? therefore G1223 PREP shall they G846 P-NPM be G2071 V-FXI-3P your G5216 P-2GP judges G2923 N-NPM .
20 But G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND I with G1722 PREP the finger G1147 N-DSM of God G2316 N-GSM cast out G1544 V-PAI-1S devils G1140 N-APN , no doubt G686 PRT the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of God G2316 N-GSM is come G5348 V-AAI-3S upon G1909 PREP you G5209 P-2AP .
21 When G3752 CONJ a strong man G2478 A-NSM armed G2528 V-RPP-NSM keepeth G5442 V-PAS-3S his G1438 F-3GSM palace G833 N-ASF , his G3588 T-NPN goods G5224 V-PAP-NPN are G2076 V-PXI-3S in G1722 PREP peace G1515 N-DSF :
22 But G1161 CONJ when G1875 CONJ a stronger G2478 A-NSM-C than he G846 P-GSM shall come upon G1904 V-2AAP-NSM him , and overcome G3528 V-AAS-3S him G846 P-ASM , he taketh G142 V-PAI-3S from him G3588 T-ASF all his armor G3833 N-ASF wherein G1909 PREP he trusted G3982 V-2LAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ divideth G1239 V-PAI-3S his G3588 T-APN spoils G4661 N-APN .
23 He G3588 T-NSM that G3588 T-NSM is G5607 V-PXP-NSM not G3361 PRT-N with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS is G2076 V-PXI-3S against G2596 PREP me G1700 P-1GS : and G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM that G3588 T-NSM gathereth G4863 V-PAP-NSM not G3361 PRT-N with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS scattereth G4650 V-PAI-3S .
24 When G3752 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN unclean G169 A-NSN spirit G4151 N-NSN is gone G1831 V-2AAS-3S out of G3588 T-GSM a man G444 N-GSM , he walketh G1330 V-PNI-3S through G1223 PREP dry G504 A-GPM places G5117 N-GPM , seeking G2212 V-PAP-NSN rest G372 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ finding G2147 V-PAP-NSN none G3361 PRT-N , he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S , I will return G5290 V-FAI-1S unto G1519 PREP my G3588 T-ASM house G3624 N-ASM whence G3606 ADV I came out G1831 V-2AAI-1S .
25 And G2532 CONJ when he cometh G2064 V-2AAP-NSN , he findeth G2147 V-PAI-3S it swept G4563 V-RPP-ASM and G2532 CONJ garnished G2885 V-RPP-ASM .
26 Then G5119 ADV goeth G4198 V-PNI-3S he , and G2532 CONJ taketh G3880 V-PAI-3S to him seven G2033 A-NUI other G2087 A-APN spirits G4151 N-APN more wicked G4191 than himself G1438 F-3GSM ; and G2532 CONJ they enter in G1525 , and G2532 CONJ dwell G2730 V-PAI-3S there G1563 ADV : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN last G2078 A-NPN state of G3588 T-GSM that G3588 T-GSM man G444 N-GSM is G1096 V-PNI-3S worse G5501 A-NPN than the G3588 T-GPN first G4413 A-GPN .
27 And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as he G3588 T-DSM spake G3004 V-PAN these things G5023 D-APN , a certain G5100 X-NSF woman G1135 N-NSF of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSM company G3793 N-GSM lifted up G1869 V-AAP-NSF her voice G5456 N-ASF , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Blessed G3107 A-NSF is the G3588 T-NSF womb G2836 N-NSF that bare G941 V-AAP-NSF thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ the paps G3149 N-NPM which G3739 R-APM thou hast sucked G2337 V-AAI-2S .
28 But G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Yea rather G3304 PRT , blessed G3107 A-NPM are they that hear G191 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM of God G2316 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ keep G5442 V-PAP-NPM it G846 P-ASM .
29 And G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-GPM people G3793 N-GPM were gathered thick together G1865 V-PPP-GPM , he began G756 V-ADI-3S to say G3004 V-PAN , This G3778 D-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S an evil G4190 A-NSF generation G1074 N-NSF : they seek G1934 V-PAI-3S a sign G4592 N-ASN ; and G2532 CONJ there shall no G3756 PRT-N sign G4592 N-NSN be given G1325 V-FPI-3S it G846 P-DSF , but G1508 the G3588 T-NSN sign G4592 N-NSN of Jonah G2495 N-GSM the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM .
30 For G1063 CONJ as G2531 ADV Jonah G2495 N-NSM was G1096 V-2ADI-3S a sign G4592 N-NSN unto the G3588 T-DPM Ninevites G3536 N-DPM , so G3779 ADV shall also G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM be G2071 V-FXI-3S to this G3588 T-DSF generation G1074 N-DSF .
31 The queen G938 N-NSF of the south G3558 N-GSM shall rise up G1453 V-FPI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF judgment G2920 N-DSF with G3326 PREP the G3588 T-GPM men G435 N-GPM of G3588 T-GSF this G3588 T-GSF generation G1074 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ condemn G2632 V-FAI-3S them G846 P-APM : for G3754 CONJ she came G2064 V-2AAI-3S from G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GPN utmost parts G4009 N-GPN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF to hear G191 V-AAN the G3588 T-ASF wisdom G4678 N-ASF of Solomon G4672 N-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , a greater G4119 A-NSN-C than Solomon G4672 N-GSM is here G5602 ADV .
32 The men G435 N-NPM of Nineveh G3535 N-PRI shall rise up G450 V-FMI-3P in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF judgment G2920 N-DSF with G3326 PREP this G3588 T-GSF generation G1074 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ shall condemn G2632 V-FAI-3P it G846 P-ASF : for G3754 CONJ they repented G3340 V-AAI-3P at G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN preaching G2782 N-ASN of Jonah G2495 N-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , a greater G4119 A-NSN-C than Jonah G2495 N-GSM is here G5602 ADV .
33 No man G3762 A-NSM , when he hath lighted G681 V-AAP-NSM a candle G3088 N-ASF , putteth G5087 V-PAI-3S it in G1519 PREP a secret place G2927 , neither G3761 ADV under G5259 PREP a bushel G3426 N-ASM , but G235 CONJ on G1909 PREP a candlestick G3087 N-ASF , that G3588 T-NPM they which come in G1531 V-PNP-NPM may see G991 V-PAS-3P the G3588 T-ASN light G5338 N-ASN .
34 The G3588 T-NSM light G3088 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN body G4983 N-GSN is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM : therefore G3767 CONJ when G3752 CONJ thine G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM is G5600 V-PXS-3S single G573 A-NSM , thy G4675 P-2GS whole G3650 A-NSN body G4983 N-NSN also G2532 CONJ is G2076 V-PXI-3S full of light G5460 A-NSN ; but G1161 CONJ when G1875 CONJ thine eye is G5600 V-PXS-3S evil G4190 A-NSM , thy G3588 T-NSN body G4983 N-NSN also G2532 CONJ is full of darkness G4652 A-NSN .
35 Take heed G4648 V-PAM-2S therefore G3767 CONJ that G3588 T-NSN the G3588 T-NSN light G5457 N-NSN which G3588 T-NSN is in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS be G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3361 PRT-N darkness G4655 N-NSN .
36 If G1487 COND thy G4675 P-2GS whole G3650 A-NSN body G4983 N-NSN therefore G3767 CONJ be full of light G5460 A-NSN , having G2192 V-PAP-NSN no G3361 PRT-N part G3313 N-ASN dark G4652 A-ASN , the whole G3650 A-NSN shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S full of light G5460 A-NSN , as G5613 ADV when G3752 CONJ the G3588 T-DSF bright shining G796 N-DSF of G3588 T-NSM a candle G3088 N-NSM doth give thee light G5461 V-PAS-3S .
37 And G1161 CONJ as he spake G2980 V-AAN , a certain G5100 X-NSM Pharisee G5330 N-NSM besought G2065 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM to G3704 ADV dine G709 V-AAS-3S with G3844 PREP him G846 P-DSM : and G1161 CONJ he went G1525 V-2AAP-NSM in , and sat down to meat G377 V-2AAI-3S .
38 And G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-NSM Pharisee G5330 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM it , he marveled G2296 V-AAI-3S that G3754 CONJ he had not G3756 PRT-N first G4412 ADV washed G907 V-API-3S before G4253 PREP dinner G712 N-GSN .
