Genesis 32:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2 When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he named that place Mahanaim.
3 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4 He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my master Esau:`Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.
5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favour in your eyes.'"
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
7 In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.
8 He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."
9 Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me,`Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'
10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.
11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.
12 But you have said,`I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"
13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:
14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds."
17 He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks,`To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'
18 then you are to say,`They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.'"
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
20 And be sure to say,`Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."
21 So Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.
24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.
25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
27 The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered.
28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."
29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.
32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.

3 And Jacob H3290 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him to H413 Esau H6215 his brother H251 CMS-3MS unto the land H776 NFS-3FS of Seir H8165 LFS , the country H7704 CMS of Edom H123 .
4 And he commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS them , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 shall ye speak H559 unto my lord H113 Esau H6215 ; Thy servant H5650 Jacob H3290 saith H559 VQQ3MS thus H3541 , I have sojourned H1481 with H5973 PREP Laban H3837 , and stayed there H309 until H5704 now H6258 :
5 And I have H1961 oxen H7794 CMS , and asses H2543 , flocks H6629 NMS , and menservants H5650 W-NMS , and womenservants H8198 : and I have sent H7971 to tell H5046 L-VHFC my lord H113 , that I may find H4672 grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 .
6 And the messengers H4397 returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to H413 PREP Jacob H3290 , saying H559 L-VQFC , We came H935 to H413 thy brother H251 Esau H6215 , and also H1571 W-CONJ he cometh H1980 to meet H7125 thee , and four H702 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP men H376 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
7 Then Jacob H3290 was greatly afraid H3372 W-VQY3MS and distressed H3334 : and he divided H2673 the people H5971 that H834 was with H854 PREP-3MS him , and the flocks H6629 , and herds H1241 D-NMS , and the camels H1581 , into two H8147 bands H4264 ;
8 And said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 Esau H6215 come H935 VQY3MS to H413 the one H259 company H4264 , and smite H5221 it , then the other company H4264 which is left H7604 shall escape H6413 .
9 And Jacob H3290 said H559 , O God H430 CDP of my father H1 CMS-1MS Abraham H85 , and God H430 of my father H1 CMS-1MS Isaac H3327 , the LORD H3068 EDS which saidst H559 D-VQPMS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Return H7725 VQFC unto thy country H776 , and to thy kindred H4138 , and I will deal well H3190 with H5973 PREP-2FS thee :
10 I am not worthy H6994 of the least of all H3605 M-CMS the mercies H2617 , and of all H3605 WM-CMS the truth H571 , which H834 thou hast showed H6213 VQQ2MS unto thy servant H5650 ; for H3588 CONJ with my staff H4731 I passed over H5674 this H2088 D-PMS Jordan H3383 D-EFS ; and now H6258 W-ADV I am become H1961 VQQ1MS two H8147 bands H4264 .
11 Deliver H5337 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , from the hand H3027 M-GFS of my brother H251 , from the hand H3027 M-GFS of Esau H6215 : for H3588 I H595 PPRO-1MS fear H3372 him , lest H6435 he will come H935 VQY3MS and smite H5221 me , and the mother H517 GFS with H5921 the children H1121 .
12 And thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS saidst H559 VQQ2MS , I will surely do thee good H3190 VHFA , and make H7760 W-VQQ1MS thy seed H2233 CMS-2MS as the sand H2344 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , which H834 cannot H3808 NADV be numbered H5608 for multitude H7230 .
13 And he lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV that same H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 ; and took H3947 W-VQY3MS of H4480 that which came H935 to his hand H3027 a present H4503 NFS for Esau H6215 his brother H251 CMP-3MS ;
14 Two hundred H3967 MFD she goats H5795 , and twenty H6242 he goats H8495 , two hundred H3967 MFD ewes H7353 , and twenty H6242 rams H352 ,
15 Thirty H7970 MMP milch H3243 camels H1581 NMP with their colts H1121 , forty H705 MMP kine H6510 , and ten H6235 bulls H6499 , twenty H6242 she asses H860 , and ten H6235 foals H5895 .
16 And he delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of his servants H5650 , every drove H5739 NMS by themselves H905 L-CMS-3MS ; and said H559 unto H413 his servants H5650 , Pass over H5674 before H6440 L-CMP me , and put H7760 a space H7305 between H996 drove H5739 NMS and drove H5739 NMS .
17 And he commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS the foremost H7223 , saying H559 L-VQFC , When H3588 Esau H6215 my brother H251 meeteth H6298 thee , and asketh H7592 thee , saying H559 L-VQFC , Whose H4310 L-IPRO art thou H859 PPRO-2MS ? and whither H575 goest H1980 VQY2MS thou ? and whose H4310 are these H428 PMP before H6440 thee ?
18 Then thou shalt say H559 , They be thy servant H5650 Jacob H3290 \'s ; it H1931 PPRO-3FS is a present H4503 NFS sent H7971 unto my lord H113 Esau H6215 : and , behold H2009 IJEC , also H1571 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is behind H310 us .
19 And so H1571 CONJ commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS he the second H8145 D-ONUM , and CONJ the third H7992 D-ONUM , and CONJ all H3605 that followed H1980 the droves H5739 , saying H559 L-VQFC , On this H2088 D-PMS manner H1697 shall ye speak H1696 unto H413 Esau H6215 , when ye find H4672 him .
20 And say H559 ye moreover H1571 CONJ , Behold H2009 , thy servant H5650 Jacob H3290 is behind H310 us . For H3588 he said H559 VQQ3MS , I will appease H3722 him with the present H4503 that goeth H1980 before H6440 CMS-3MS me , and afterward H310 I will see H7200 VQY1MS his face H6440 ; peradventure H194 ADV he will accept H5375 VQY3MS of me .
21 So went H5674 the present H4503 over before H5921 him : and himself H1931 W-PPRO-3MS lodged H3885 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 in the company H4264 .
22 And he rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS that H1931 PPRO-3MS night H3915 , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS his two H8147 ONUM wives H802 , and his two H8147 ONUM womenservants H8198 , and his eleven H259 sons H3206 , and passed over H5674 the ford H4569 Jabbok H2999 .
23 And he took H3947 them , and sent them over H5674 the brook H5158 , and sent over H5674 that H834 he had .
24 And Jacob H3290 was left H3498 alone H905 L-CMS-3MS ; and there wrestled H79 a man H376 with H5973 PREP-3MS him until H5704 the breaking H5927 of the day H7837 .
25 And when he saw H7200 that H3588 CONJ he prevailed H3201 not H3808 NADV against him , he touched H5060 W-VQY3MS the hollow H3709 of his thigh H3409 ; and the hollow H3709 of Jacob H3290 \'s thigh H3409 was out of joint H3363 , as he wrestled H79 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
26 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let me go H7971 , for H3588 the day H7837 breaketh H5927 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will not H3808 NADV let thee go H7971 , except H518 thou bless H1288 me .
27 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , What H4100 is thy name H8034 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Jacob H3290 .
28 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy name H8034 shall be called H559 W-VQY3MS no H3808 NADV more H5750 Jacob H3290 , but H518 Israel H3478 : for H3588 as a prince hast thou power H8280 with H5973 PREP God H430 EDP and with H5973 men H376 NMP , and hast prevailed H3201 .
29 And Jacob H3290 asked H7592 W-VQY3MS him , and said H559 , Tell H5046 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , thy name H8034 CMS-2MS . And he said H559 , Wherefore H4100 is it H2088 PMS that thou dost ask H7592 after my name H8034 ? And he blessed H1288 him there H8033 ADV .
30 And Jacob H3290 called H7121 the name H8034 CMS of the place H4725 D-NMS Peniel H6439 : for H3588 I have seen H7200 VQQ1MS God H430 EDP face H6440 NMP to H413 face H6440 NMP , and my life H5315 CFS-1MS is preserved H5337 .
31 And as H834 RPRO he passed over H5674 VQQ3MS Penuel H6439 the sun H8121 D-NMS rose H2224 upon him , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS halted H6760 upon H5921 PREP his thigh H3409 .
32 Therefore H5921 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 eat H398 not H3808 ADV of the sinew H1517 which shrank H5384 , which H834 RPRO is upon H5921 PREP the hollow H3709 of the thigh H3409 , unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS : because H3588 CONJ he touched H5060 the hollow H3709 of Jacob H3290 \'s thigh H3409 in the sinew H1517 that shrank H5384 .
