Joshua 3:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.
2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp,
3 giving orders to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.
4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it."
5 Joshua told the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you."
6 Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people." So they took it up and went ahead of them.
7 And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so that they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses.
8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant:`When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in the river.'"
9 Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.
10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.
11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.
12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD-- the Lord of all the earth--set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap."
14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.
15 Now the Jordan is in flood all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge,
16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
1 And Joshua H3091 rose early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS ; and they removed H5265 from Shittim H7851 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to H5704 PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and all H3605 W-CMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV before H2962 ADV they passed over H5674 .
2 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS after H7097 M-CMS three H7969 BMS days H3117 NMP , that the officers H7860 went H5674 through H7130 the host H4264 ;
3 And they commanded H6680 the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , When ye see H7200 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 , and the priests H3548 the Levites H3881 bearing H5375 it , then ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP shall remove H5265 from your place H4725 , and go H1980 after H310 it .
4 Yet H389 ADV there shall be H1961 VQY3MS a space H7350 between H996 you and it , about two thousand H505 cubits H520 UFS by measure H4060 : come not near H408 ADV unto H413 PREP-3MS it , that L-CONJ ye may know H3045 the way H1870 D-NMS by which H834 RPRO ye must go H1980 : for H3588 CONJ ye have not H3808 NADV passed H5674 this way H1870 heretofore H8543 .
5 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Sanctify yourselves H6942 : for H3588 CONJ tomorrow H4279 NMS the LORD H3068 EDS will do H6213 VQY3MS wonders H6381 among H7130 you .
6 And Joshua H3091 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the priests H3548 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Take up H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS , and pass over H5674 before H6440 L-CMP the people H5971 . And they took up H5375 W-VQY3MP the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MP before H6440 L-CMP the people H5971 D-NMS .
7 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , This H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS will I begin H2490 to magnify H1431 thee in the sight H5869 B-CMP of all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 , that H834 RPRO they may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ , as H834 RPRO I was H1961 VQQ1MS with H5973 PREP Moses H4872 , so I will be H1961 VQY1MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
8 And thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS shalt command H6680 the priests H3548 that bear H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS , saying H559 L-VQFC , When ye are come H935 to H5704 PREP the brink H7097 of the water H4325 of Jordan H3383 D-EFS , ye shall stand still H5975 in Jordan H3383 .
9 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , Come H5066 hither H2008 ADV , and hear H8085 the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 .
10 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Hereby H2063 ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ the living H2416 AMS God H410 EDS is among H7130 you , and that he will without fail drive out H3423 from before H6440 you the Canaanites H3669 , and the Hittites H2850 , and the Hivites H2340 , and the Perizzites H6522 , and the Girgashites H1622 , and the Amorites H567 , and the Jebusites H2983 .
11 Behold H2009 IJEC , the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS of the Lord H113 of all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS passeth over H5674 before H6440 you into Jordan H3383 .
12 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore take H3947 you twelve H8147 ONUM men H376 NMS out of the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , out of every tribe a man H376 NMS .
13 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , as soon as the soles H3709 of the feet H7272 of the priests H3548 that bear H5375 the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 EDS , the Lord H113 of all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS , shall rest H5117 in the waters H4325 D-CMS of Jordan H3383 D-EFS , that the waters H4325 D-CMS of Jordan H3383 D-EFS shall be cut off H3772 from the waters H4325 D-CMS that come down H3381 from above H4605 ; and they shall stand H5975 upon a H259 ONUM heap H5067 .
14 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the people H5971 removed H5265 from their tents H168 , to pass over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and the priests H3548 bearing H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS before H6440 L-CMP the people H5971 D-NMS ;
15 And as they that bore H5375 the ark H727 were come H935 unto H5704 PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and the feet H7272 of the priests H3548 that bore H5375 the ark H727 were dipped H2881 in the brim H7097 of the water H4325 D-OMD , (for Jordan H3383 overfloweth H4390 VQQ3MS all H3605 NMS his banks H1415 all H3605 NMS the time H3117 CMP of harvest H7105 , )
16 That the waters H4325 D-CMS which came down H3381 from above H4605 ML-ADV-3FS stood H5975 and rose up H6965 VQQ3MP upon a H259 MMS heap H5067 very H3966 ADV far H7368 from the city H5892 D-GFS Adam H121 , that H834 RPRO is beside H6654 Zaretan H6891 : and those that came down H3381 toward H5921 PREP the sea H3220 NMS of the plain H6160 , even the salt H4417 sea H3220 NMS , failed H8552 VQQ3MP , and were cut off H3772 : and the people H5971 passed over H5674 VQQ3MP right against H5048 Jericho H3405 .
17 And the priests H3548 that bore H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS stood H5975 firm H3559 VHI2MS on dry ground H2724 in the midst H8432 B-NMS of Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and all H3605 NMS the Israelites H3478 passed over H5674 on dry ground H2724 , until H5704 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H1471 were passed H5674 clean H8552 VQQ3MP over H5674 Jordan H3383 .
