Matthew 6:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 "Be careful not to do your`acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 "This, then, is how you should pray: "`Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'
14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
16 "When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
23 But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 "No-one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour or spin.
29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.
30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 So do not worry, saying,`What shall we eat?' or`What shall we drink?' or`What shall we wear?'
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

5 And G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ thou prayest G4336 V-PNS-2S , thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N be G2071 V-FXI-2S as G5618 ADV the G3588 T-NPM hypocrites G5273 N-NPM are : for G3754 CONJ they love G5368 V-PAI-3P to pray G4336 V-PNN standing G2476 V-RAP-NPM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF and G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF corners G1137 N-DPF of G3588 T-GPF the G3588 T-GPF streets G4113 N-GPF , that G3704 ADV they may be seen G5316 V-2APS-3P of men G444 N-DPM . 6 But G1161 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS , when G3752 CONJ thou prayest G4336 V-PNS-2S , enter G1525 V-2AAM-2S into G1519 PREP thy G3588 T-ASN closet G5009 N-NSN , and G2532 CONJ when thou hast shut G2808 V-AAP-NSM thy G3588 T-ASF door G2374 N-ASF , pray G4336 V-ADM-2S to thy G3588 T-DSM Father G3962 N-DSM which G3588 T-DSM is in G1722 PREP secret G2927 A-DSN ; and G2532 CONJ thy G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM which seeth G991 V-PAP-NSM in G1722 PREP secret G2927 A-DSN shall reward G591 V-FAI-3S thee G4671 P-2DS openly G1722 PREP .
7 But G1161 CONJ when ye pray G4336 V-PNP-NPM , use not vain repetitions G945 V-AAS-2P , as G5618 ADV the G3588 T-NPM heathen G1482 A-NPM do : for G1063 CONJ they think G1380 V-PAI-3P that G3754 CONJ they shall be heard G1522 V-FPI-3P for G1722 PREP their G3588 T-DSF much speaking G4180 N-DSF .
8 Be not G3361 PRT-N ye therefore G3767 CONJ like unto G3666 V-APS-2P them G846 P-DPM : for G1063 CONJ your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM knoweth G1492 V-RAI-3S what things G3739 R-GPN ye have G2192 V-PAI-2P need G5532 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSM , before G4253 PREP ye G5209 P-2AP ask G154 V-AAN him G846 P-ASM .
9 After this manner G3779 ADV therefore G3767 CONJ pray G4336 V-PNM-2P ye G5210 P-2NP : Our G2257 P-1GP Father G3962 N-VSM which G3588 T-NSM art in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM , Hallowed G37 V-APM-3S be thy G3588 T-NSN name G3686 N-NSN .
10 Thy G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF come G2064 V-2AAM-3S . Thy G3588 T-NSN will G2307 N-NSN be done G1096 V-AOM-3S in G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-GSF , as G5613 ADV it is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM .
11 Give G1325 V-2AAM-2S us G2254 P-1DP this day G4594 ADV our G3588 T-ASM daily G1967 A-ASM bread G740 N-ASM .
12 And G2532 CONJ forgive G863 V-2AAM-2S us G2254 P-1DP our G3588 T-APN debts G3783 N-APN , as G5613 ADV we G2249 P-1NP forgive G863 V-PAI-1P our G3588 T-DPM debtors G3781 N-DPM .
13 And G2532 CONJ lead G1533 V-AAS-2S us G2248 P-1AP not G3361 PRT-N into G1519 PREP temptation G3986 N-ASM , but G235 CONJ deliver G4506 V-ADM-2S us G2248 P-1AP from G575 PREP evil G4190 A-GSM : For G3754 CONJ thine G4675 P-2GS is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF power G1411 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF glory G1391 N-NSF , forever G1519 PREP . 14 For G1063 CONJ if G1437 COND ye G3588 T-DPM forgive G863 V-2AAS-2P men G444 N-DPM their G3588 T-APN trespasses G3900 N-APN , your G3588 T-NSM heavenly G3770 A-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM will also G2532 CONJ forgive G863 V-FAI-3S you G5213 P-2DP :
15 But G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND ye forgive G863 V-2AAS-2P not G3361 PRT-N men G444 N-DPM their G3588 T-APN trespasses G3900 N-APN , neither G3761 ADV will your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM forgive G863 V-FAI-3S your G3588 T-APN trespasses G3900 N-APN .
16 Moreover G1161 CONJ when G3752 CONJ ye fast G3522 V-PAS-2P , be G1096 V-PNM-2P not G3361 PRT-N , as G5618 ADV the G3588 T-NPM hypocrites G5273 N-NPM , of a sad countenance G4659 A-NPM : for G1063 CONJ they disfigure G853 V-PAI-3P their G3588 T-APN faces G4383 N-APN , that G3704 ADV they may appear G5316 V-2APS-3P unto men G444 N-DPM to fast G3522 V-PAP-NPM . Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , They have G568 V-PAI-3P their G3588 T-ASM reward G3408 N-ASM .
17 But G1161 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS , when thou fastest G3522 V-PAP-NSM , anoint G218 V-AMM-2S thine G3588 T-ASF head G2776 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ wash G3538 V-AMM-2S thy G3588 T-ASN face G4383 N-ASN ;
18 That G3704 ADV thou appear G5316 V-2APS-2S not G3361 PRT-N unto men G444 N-DPM to fast G3522 V-PAP-NSM , but G235 CONJ unto thy G3588 T-DSM Father G3962 N-DSM which G3588 T-DSM is in G1722 PREP secret G2927 A-DSN : and G2532 CONJ thy G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM , which seeth G991 V-PAP-NSM in G1722 PREP secret G2927 A-DSN , shall reward G591 V-FAI-3S thee G4671 P-2DS openly G1722 PREP .
19 Lay not up G2343 V-PAM-2P for yourselves G5213 P-2DP treasures G2344 N-APM upon G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-GSF , where G3699 ADV moth G4597 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ rust G1035 N-NSF doth corrupt G853 V-PAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ where G3699 ADV thieves G2812 N-NPM break through G1358 V-PAI-3P and G2532 CONJ steal G2813 V-PAI-3P :
20 But G1161 CONJ lay up G2343 V-PAM-2P for yourselves G5213 P-2DP treasures G2344 N-APM in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM , where G3699 ADV neither G3777 CONJ moth G4597 N-NSM nor G3777 CONJ rust G1035 N-NSF doth corrupt G853 V-PAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ where G3699 ADV thieves G2812 N-NPM do not G3756 PRT-N break through G1358 V-PAI-3P nor G3761 ADV steal G2813 V-PAI-3P :
21 For G1063 CONJ where G3699 ADV your G3588 T-NSM treasure G2344 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S , there G1563 ADV will your G3588 T-NSF heart G2588 N-NSF be G2071 V-FXI-3S also G2532 CONJ .
22 The G3588 T-NSM light G3088 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN body G4983 N-GSN is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM : if G1437 COND therefore G3767 CONJ thine G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM be G5600 V-PXS-3S single G573 A-NSM , thy G4675 P-2GS whole G3650 A-NSN body G4983 N-NSN shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S full of light G5460 A-NSN .
23 But G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND thine G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM be G5600 V-PXS-3S evil G4190 A-NSM , thy G4675 P-2GS whole G3650 A-NSN body G4983 N-NSN shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S full of darkness G4652 A-NSN . 24 No man G3762 A-NSM can G1410 V-PNI-3S serve G1398 V-PAN two G1417 A-DPM masters G2962 N-DPM : for G1063 CONJ either G2228 PRT he will hate G3404 V-FAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM one G1520 A-ASM , and G2532 CONJ love G25 V-FAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM other G2087 A-ASM ; or G2228 PRT else he will hold G472 V-FDI-3S to the one G1520 A-GSM , and G2532 CONJ despise G2706 V-FAI-3S the G3588 T-GSM other G2087 A-GSM . Ye cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P serve G1398 V-PAN God G2316 N-DSM and G2532 CONJ mammon G3126 ARAM .
25 Therefore G1223 PREP I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Take no thought G3309 V-PAM-2P for G3588 T-DSF your G3588 T-DSF life G5590 N-DSF , what G5101 I-ASN ye shall eat G5315 V-2AAS-2P , or G2532 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN ye shall drink G4095 V-2AAS-2P ; nor yet G3366 CONJ for G3588 T-DSN your G3588 T-DSN body G4983 N-DSN , what G5101 I-ASN ye shall put on G1746 V-AMS-2P . 26 Behold G1689 V-AAM-2P the G3588 T-APN fowls G4071 N-APN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM air G3772 N-GSM : for G3754 CONJ they sow G4687 V-PAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N , neither G3761 ADV do they reap G2325 V-PAI-3P , nor G3761 ADV gather G4863 V-PAI-3P into G1519 PREP barns G596 N-APF ; yet G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NSM heavenly G3770 A-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM feedeth G5142 V-PAI-3S them G846 P-APN . Are ye not much better G1308 V-PAI-2P than they G846 P-GPN ?
27 Which G5101 I-NSM of G1537 PREP you G5216 P-2GP by taking thought G3309 V-PAP-NSM can G1410 V-PNI-3S add G4369 V-2AAN one G1520 A-ASM cubit G4083 N-ASM unto G1909 PREP his G3588 T-ASF stature G2244 N-ASF ?
28 And G2532 CONJ why G5101 I-ASN take ye thought G3309 V-PAM-2P for G4012 PREP raiment G1742 N-GSN ? Consider G2648 V-2AAM-2P the G3588 T-APN lilies G2918 N-APN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM field G68 N-GSM , how G4459 ADV they grow G837 V-PAI-3S ; they toil G2872 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N , neither G3761 ADV do they spin G3514 V-PAI-3S :
29 And G1161 CONJ yet I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ even G3761 ADV Solomon G4672 N-NSM in G1722 PREP all G3956 A-DSF his G3588 T-DSF glory G1391 N-DSF was not arrayed G4016 V-2AMI-3S like G5613 ADV one G1520 A-ASN of these G5130 D-GPN .
30 Wherefore G1161 CONJ , if G1487 COND God G2316 N-NSM so G3779 ADV clothe G294 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM grass G5528 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM field G68 N-GSM , which today G4594 ADV is G5607 V-PXP-ASM , and G2532 CONJ tomorrow G839 ADV is cast G906 V-PPP-ASM into G1519 PREP the oven G2823 N-ASM , shall he not G3756 PRT-N much G4183 A-DSN more G3123 ADV clothe you G5209 P-2AP , O ye of little faith G3640 A-VPM ?
31 Therefore G3767 CONJ take no thought G3309 V-AAS-2P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , What G5101 I-ASN shall we eat G5315 V-2AAS-1P ? or G2228 PRT , What G5101 I-ASN shall we drink G4095 V-2AAS-1P ? or G2228 PRT , Wherewithal G5101 I-ASN shall we be clothed G4016 V-2AMS-1P ?
32 ( CONJ For CONJ after all G3956 A-APN these things G5023 D-APN do the G3588 T-NPN Gentiles G1484 N-NPN seek G1934 V-PAI-3S : ) for G1063 CONJ your G3588 T-NSM heavenly G3770 A-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM knoweth G1492 V-RAI-3S that G3754 CONJ ye have need G5535 V-PAI-2P of all G537 A-GPN these things G5130 D-GPN .
33 But G1161 CONJ seek G2212 V-PAM-2P ye first G4412 ADV the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-ASF righteousness G1343 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPN these things G5023 D-NPN shall be added G4369 V-FPI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP .
34 Take therefore no thought G3361 PRT-N for G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF morrow G839 ADV : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF morrow G839 ADV shall take thought G3309 V-AAS-2P for the G3588 T-APN things G3588 T-APN of itself G1438 F-3GSF . Sufficient G713 A-NSN unto the G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF is the G3588 T-NSF evil G2549 N-NSF thereof G846 P-GSF .
