Jeremiah 32:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah.
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, "Why do you prophesy as you do? You say,`This is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
4 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape out of the hands of the Babylonians but will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes.
5 He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.'"
6 Jeremiah said, "The word of the LORD came to me:
7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say,`Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.'
8 "Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said,`Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.' "I knew that this was the word of the LORD;
9 so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver.
10 I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales.
11 I took the deed of purchase--the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy--
12 and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
13 "In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions:
14 `This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so that they will last a long time.
15 For this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.'
16 "After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:
17 "Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
18 You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps of their children after them. O great and powerful God, whose name is the LORD Almighty,
19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to all the ways of men; you reward everyone according to his conduct and as his deeds deserve.
20 You performed miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, both in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours.
21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror.
22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give to their forefathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.
23 They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster upon them.
24 "See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague, the city will be handed over to the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said has happened, as you now see.
25 And though the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, you, O Sovereign LORD, say to me,`Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.'"
26 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
27 "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
28 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it.
29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people provoked me to anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
30 "The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but provoke me with what their hands have made, declares the LORD.
31 From the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove it from my sight.
32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done--they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem.
33 They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.
34 They set up their abominable idols in the house that bears my Name and defiled it.
35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech, though I never commanded, nor did it enter my mind, that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin.
36 "You are saying about this city,`By the sword, famine and plague it will be handed over to the king of Babylon'; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
37 I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.
38 They will be my people, and I will be their God.
39 I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.
40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.
41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.
42 "This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them.
43 Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say,`It is a desolate waste, without men or animals, for it has been handed over to the Babylonians.'
44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD."

2 For then H227 the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS \'s army H2428 besieged H6696 Jerusalem H3389 : and Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 was H1961 VQQ3MS shut up H3607 in the court H2691 of the prison H4307 , which H834 RPRO was in the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 \'s house H1004 .
3 For H834 RPRO Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 had shut him up H3607 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Wherefore H4069 IPRO dost thou H859 PPRO-2MS prophesy H5012 , and say H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will give H5414 VQPMS this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , and he shall take H3920 it ;
4 And Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 shall not H3808 NADV escape H4422 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the Chaldeans H3778 , but H3588 CONJ shall surely be delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , and shall speak H1696 with H5973 PREP him mouth H6310 to mouth H6310 , and his eyes H5869 W-CFD-3MS shall behold H7200 his eyes H5869 CMS-3MS ;
5 And he shall lead H1980 Zedekiah H6667 to Babylon H894 , and there H8033 W-ADV shall he be H1961 VQY3MS until H5704 PREP I visit H6485 him , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS : though H3588 CONJ ye fight H3898 with H854 PREP the Chaldeans H3778 , ye shall not H3808 NADV prosper H6743 .
6 And Jeremiah H3414 said H559 W-VQY3MS , The word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
7 Behold H2009 IJEC , Hanameel H2601 the son H1121 of Shallum H7967 thine uncle H1730 shall come H935 VQPMS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , saying H559 L-VQFC , Buy H7069 thee my field H7704 that H834 RPRO is in Anathoth H6068 : for H3588 CONJ the right H4941 CMS of redemption H1353 is thine to buy H7069 it .
8 So Hanameel H2601 mine uncle H1730 \'s son H1121 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP me in H413 PREP the court H2691 of the prison H4307 according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP me , Buy H7069 my field H7704 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , that H834 RPRO is in Anathoth H6068 , which H834 RPRO is in the country H776 B-GFS of Benjamin H1144 : for H3588 CONJ the right H4941 CMS of inheritance H3425 is thine , and the redemption H1353 is thine ; buy H7069 it for thyself . Then I knew H3045 that H3588 CONJ this H1931 PPRO-3MS was the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS .
9 And I bought H7069 the field H7704 D-NMS of Hanameel H2601 my uncle H1730 \'s son H1121 , that H834 RPRO was in Anathoth H6068 , and weighed H8254 him the money H3701 , even seventeen H7651 NUM-MS shekels H8255 of silver H3701 .
10 And I subscribed H3789 the evidence H5612 BD-NMS , and sealed H2856 it , and took H5749 witnesses H5707 , and weighed H8254 him the money H3701 in the balances H3976 .
11 So I took H3947 the evidence H5612 CMS of the purchase H4736 , both that which was sealed H2856 according to the law H4687 and custom H2706 , and that which was open H1540 :
12 And I gave H5414 the evidence H5612 of the purchase H4736 unto H413 PREP Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 , the son H1121 of Maaseiah H4271 , in the sight H5869 of Hanameel H2601 mine uncle H1730 \'s son , and in the presence H5869 of the witnesses H5707 that subscribed H3789 the book H5612 of the purchase H4736 , before H5869 all H3605 NMS the Jews H3064 that sat H3427 in the court H2691 of the prison H4307 .
13 And I charged H6680 Baruch H1263 before H5869 them , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
14 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Take H3947 these H428 D-DPRO-3MP evidences H5612 , this H2088 D-PMS evidence H5612 CMS of the purchase H4736 , both which is sealed H2856 , and this H2088 D-PMS evidence H5612 CMS which is open H1540 ; and put H5414 them in an earthen H2789 NMS vessel H3627 , that H4616 L-CONJ they may continue H5975 many H7227 AMP days H3117 NMP .
15 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Houses H1004 and fields H7704 and vineyards H3754 shall be possessed H7069 again H5750 ADV in this H2063 land H776 B-NFS .
16 Now when H310 PREP I had delivered H5414 the evidence H5612 CMS of the purchase H4736 unto H413 PREP Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 , I prayed H6419 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
17 Ah H162 Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ! behold H2009 IJEC , thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast made H6213 VQQ2MS the heaven H8064 D-NMD and the earth H776 D-GFS by thy great H1419 D-AMS power H3581 and stretched out H5186 arm H2220 , and there is nothing H3808 ADV too hard H6381 for H4480 PREP-2MS thee :
18 Thou showest H6213 VQPMS lovingkindness H2617 NMS unto thousands H505 , and recompensest H7999 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 into H413 PREP the bosom H2436 of their children H1121 after H310 them : the Great H1419 D-AMS , the Mighty H1368 God H410 , the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , is his name H8034 CMS-3MS ,
19 Great H1419 in counsel H6098 , and mighty H7227 W-JMS in work H5950 : for H834 RPRO thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS are open H6491 upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the ways H1870 CMD-1MS of the sons H1121 of men H120 NMS : to give H5414 L-VQFC every one H376 L-NMS according to his ways H1870 , and according to the fruit H6529 of his doings H4611 :
20 Which H834 RPRO hast set H7760 signs H226 and wonders H4159 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , even unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS , and in Israel H3478 , and among other men H120 ; and hast made H6213 thee a name H8034 CMS , as at this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 ;
21 And hast brought forth thy people H5971 Israel H3478 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 with signs H226 , and with wonders H4159 , and with a strong H2389 hand H3027 , and with a stretched out H5186 arm H248 , and with great H1419 terror H4172 ;
22 And hast given H5414 W-VQY3FS them this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , which H834 RPRO thou didst swear H7650 to their fathers H1 to give H5414 L-VQFC them , a land H776 GFS flowing H2100 with milk H2461 NMS and honey H1706 ;
23 And they came H935 W-VQY3MP in , and possessed H3423 it ; but they obeyed H8085 VQQ3MP not H3808 ADV thy voice H6963 , neither H3808 NADV walked H1980 in thy law H8451 ; they have done H6213 L-VQFC nothing H3808 NADV of all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO thou commandedst H6680 them to do H6213 VQQ3MP : therefore thou hast caused all H3605 NMS this H2063 evil H7451 D-AFS to come upon H7122 them :
24 Behold H2009 IJEC the mounts H5550 , they are come H935 VQQ3MP unto the city H5892 D-GFS to take H3920 it ; and the city H5892 is given H5414 VNQ3FS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Chaldeans H3778 , that fight H3898 against H5921 PREP-3FS it , because H6440 M-CMP of the sword H2719 D-GFS , and of the famine H7458 , and of the pestilence H1698 : and what H834 W-RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 is come to pass H1961 VQQ3MS ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , thou seest H7200 it .
25 And thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS hast said H559 VQQ2MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , Buy H7069 thee the field H7704 D-NMS for money H3701 BD-NMS , and take H5749 witnesses H5707 ; for the city H5892 is given H5414 VNQ3FS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Chaldeans H3778 .
26 Then came H1961 W-VQY3MS the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS unto H413 PREP Jeremiah H3414 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
27 Behold H2009 IJEC , I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of all H3605 NMS flesh H1320 NMS : is there any H3605 NMS thing H1697 too hard H6381 for H4480 me ?
28 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Behold H2009 , I will give H5414 VQPMS this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Chaldeans H3778 , and into the hand H3027 of Nebuchadnezzar H5019 king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , and he shall take H3920 it :
29 And the Chaldeans H3778 , that fight H3898 against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , shall come H935 and set H3341 fire H784 on this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , and burn H8313 it with the houses H1004 , upon H5921 PREP whose H834 RPRO roofs H1406 they have offered incense H6999 unto Baal H1168 , and poured out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 , to H4616 L-CONJ provoke me to anger H3707 .
30 For H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and the children H1121 W-CMP of Judah H3063 have H1961 VQQ3MP only H389 ADV done H6213 evil H7451 before H5869 me from their youth H5271 : for H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have only H389 ADV provoked me to anger H3707 with the work H4639 of their hands H3027 CFD-3MP , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
31 For PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS hath been H1961 VQQ3FS to me as a provocation H5921 PREP of mine anger H639 CMS-1MS and of H5921 PREP my fury H2534 from H4480 the day H3117 D-AMS that H834 RPRO they built H1129 it even unto H5704 W-PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS ; that I should remove H5493 it from before H5921 PREP my face H6440 ,
32 Because H5921 PREP of all H3605 NMS the evil H7451 CFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and of the children H1121 W-CMP of Judah H3063 , which H834 RPRO they have done H6213 VQQ3MP to provoke me to anger H3707 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP , their kings H4428 , their princes H8269 , their priests H3548 , and their prophets H5030 , and the men H376 W-NMS of Judah H3063 , and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 .
33 And they have turned H6437 unto H413 PREP-1MS me the back H6203 , and not H3808 W-NPAR the face H6440 NMP : though I taught H3925 them , rising up early H7925 and teaching H3925 them , yet they have not H369 hearkened H8085 to receive H3947 L-VQFC instruction H4148 .
34 But they set H7760 W-VQY3MP their abominations H8251 in the house H1004 , which H834 RPRO is called H7121 by H5921 PREP-3MS my name H8034 , to defile H2930 it .
35 And they built H1129 the high places H1116 of Baal H1168 , which H834 RPRO are in the valley H1516 of the son H1121 CMS of Hinnom H2011 , to cause their sons H1121 and their daughters H1323 to pass through H5674 the fire unto Molech H4432 ; which H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 them not H3808 ADV , neither H3808 W-NADV came H5927 it into H5921 PREP my mind H3820 NMS-1MS , that they should do H6213 L-VQFC this H2063 D-DFS abomination H8441 , to H4616 L-CONJ cause Judah H3063 to sin H2398 .
36 And now H6258 W-ADV therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , concerning H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , whereof H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS say H559 , It shall be delivered H5414 VNQ3FS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS by the sword H2719 , and by the famine H7458 , and by the pestilence H1698 ;
37 Behold H2009 , I will gather H6908 them out of all H3605 M-CMS countries H776 , whither H834 RPRO I have driven H5080 them in mine anger H639 , and in my fury H2534 , and in great H1419 AMS wrath H7110 ; and I will bring them again H7725 unto H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and I will cause them to dwell H3427 safely H983 :
38 And they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS my people H5971 , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will be H1961 VQY1MS their God H430 L-NMP :
39 And I will give H5414 them one H259 MMS heart H3820 NMS , and one H259 MMS way H1870 W-NMS , that they may fear H3372 me forever H3117 D-NMP , for the good H2896 of them , and of their children H1121 after H310 them :
40 And I will make H3772 an everlasting H5769 NMS covenant H1285 NFS with them , that H834 RPRO I will not H3808 ADV turn away H7725 VQY1MS from them , to do them good H3190 ; but I will put H5414 VQY1MS my fear H3374 in their hearts H3824 B-CMS-3MP , that they shall not H1115 L-NPAR depart H5493 VQI2MS from me .
41 Yea , I will rejoice H7797 over H5921 PREP-3MP them to do them good H2895 , and I will plant H5193 them in this H2063 D-DFS land H776 B-NFS assuredly H571 with my whole H3605 B-CMS heart H3820 NMS-1MS and with my whole H3605 WB-CMS soul H5315 CFS-1MS .
42 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Like as H834 RPRO I have brought H935 all H3605 NMS this H2063 D-DFS great H1419 D-AFS evil H7451 D-AFS upon H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , so H3651 ADV will I H595 PPRO-1MS bring H935 VHPMS upon H5921 PREP-3MP them all H3605 NMS the good H2896 that H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS have promised H1696 VQPMS them .
43 And fields H7704 D-NMS shall be bought H7069 in this H2063 D-DFS land H776 B-NFS , whereof H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS say H559 , It H1931 PPRO-3FS is desolate H8077 without H369 man H120 NMS or beast H929 W-NFS ; it is given H5414 VNQ3FS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Chaldeans H3778 .
44 Men shall buy H7069 fields H7704 for money H3701 BD-NMS , and subscribe H3789 evidences H5612 BD-NMS , and seal H2856 them , and take H5749 witnesses H5707 in the land H776 B-GFS of Benjamin H1144 , and in the places about H5439 Jerusalem H3389 , and in the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 , and in the cities H5892 of the mountains H2022 , and in the cities H5892 of the valley H8219 , and in the cities H5892 of the south H5045 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ I will cause their captivity H7622 to return H7725 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
